CRYSTAL FAIRY & THE MAGICAL CACTUS Jamie (Michael Cera) es un joven estadounidense que llega a Chile con un solo propósito: tomar San Pedro, un cactus alucinógeno, usado ancestralmente como medicina por los chamanes indígenas. Con esta intención emprende un obsesivo viaje acompañado por tres hermanos chilenos y una gringa a la que conoció en una noche festiva de excesos: Crystal Fairy. El espíritu libre y místico de Cystal, angustiada por la vanalidad del mundo y la inminente llegada del 2012 con todas sus profecías mayas sobre el fin de una era, chocan en todo momento con la personalidad problemática y frívola de Jamie, a quien sólo preocupa su toma de San Pedro. Que ella esconde grandes secretos, es algo que intuimos desde que la vemos a escondidas tomando gaseosa y comiendo cereales mientras momentos antes no había parado de criticar la comida basura, sin embargo, la magnitud de los mismos no la conoceremos hasta el impactante final. Rodada sin presupuesto, su mismo director habla de ella como una película fresca y entretenida, de la que no esperaba los grandes reconocimientos de los que ha sido merecedora, como el premio al mejor director en Sundance. El verano y los imponentes paisajes desérticos chilenos, son los otros compañeros de aventura en este viaje que lleva a los personajes a ir dejando atrás su incredulidad y sus burlas, para enfrentarse con sus miedos y romper con sus prejuicios. Jamie (Michael Cera) is a young American who goes to Chile with a single goal: to take San Pedro, a hallucinogenic cactus used medicinally for centuries by indigenous shamans. With this as his purpose, he sets out an obsessive journey accompanied by three Chilean brothers and an American girl he meets at a raging party: Crystal Fairy. The free and mystic spirit of Crystal, anguished by the world’s banality, the impending arrival of 2012 and the Mayan prophecies about the end of an era, clashes at every turn with the frivolous and trouble-making Jaime, whose only concern is taking San Pedro. We immediately realize that she is hiding something when we see her sneaking soda and cereal after railing against junk food. But we won’t know how big her secrets really are until the movie’s impressive finale. Shot with no budget, the director describes the film as a fresh, entertaining movie and confesses he didn’t expect the recognition it has received, such as winning best director at Sundance. The Chilean summer and the country’s impressive desert landscapes accompany the characters on their journey, a trip that forces them to shake off their disbelief and childishness, face their fears and move beyond their prejudice.
