What Are The Differences Between Dyes And Pigments? Dyes and pigments are two primary types of colourants. When you have a basic understanding of the difference between the two, you will be able to make the right choice for your floors. In this blog, we are going to discuss the difference between dye and pigments. What is a Dye? A dye is a kind of small soluble colourant. Solubility implies that the dye dissolves well in the application fluid or binder. Moreover, dyes tend to be more transparent, letting them glaze over the material. Usually, dye molecules have elements that help them bind to the surface. These elements form either hydrogen bonds, van der Waals forces, or ionic bonds depending on the substrate’s characteristics. Dye molecules produce a colour called the chromophore. A majority of the dyes have auxochromes that are either weakly or basic acidic groups, increasing the dye’s colour. What is a Pigment? A pigment is an insoluble material that is ground into a fine powder to be used as a colourant. Since they are insoluble, pigments will be suspended in the binder. Thus, the binder holds pigments in place on the material. The pigment has two more characteristics- low tinting strength and opacity. Since they are opaque, pigments can cover the colour of the material completely. Tinting in this case refers to how well colour hues mix with each other. Moreover, pigments are inorganic metals, such as cadmium, lead, titanium, etc. Generally, pigments are primarily used for producing plastics, paints, inks, and other polymeric materials. Differences Between Dye and Pigment A dye is a highly saturated organic compound that bestows colour upon a substrate by selectively absorbing light. Conversely, pigment refers to particulate matter, either inorganic or organic, that can be black, white, coloured, or fluorescent. These pigments are typically insoluble and remain chemically and physically unaffected by the substrate into which they are integrated. While this distinction forms the primary difference between the two, there are additional contrasting characteristics as well. Let’s take a look at them. 1. Size A dye particle is small. But pigment on the other hand is large in comparison to size. 2. Solubility There is a difference in solubility of both. Dyes are soluble in water but pigments aren’t soluble in water and several other solvents. 3. Transparency Another difference between dye and pigments is transparency. Dyes tend to be more transparent. Pigments, on the other hand, are less transparent in comparison to dyes.
