1st semester enrollment surges to 7.41% by Gayle Faith Mortel

NTC enrollment for A.Y. 2019-2020 surged to 12, 839 or 7.41 percent this semester as compared to 11, 888 enrollees last year, reported by the Office of Registrar. Under Basic Education, the breakdown of enrollees were as follows: Elementary— 611; Junior High School (JHS)— 1,523; and Senior High School (SHS)—2,382. For college programs, the School of Teacher Education (SoTE) enrollees got the highest number of enrollees with 3, 992. It was followed

by the School of Business (SoB) with 2,910. Meanwhile, the School of Arts, Sciences, and Technology (SoAST) got the lowest number of enrollees with 1,391. Institution Reforms The restructuring of college programs was established, dubbed as 4x3 structure, this semester. There were appointed four deans and three program heads to administer the School of Teacher Education (SoTE)—Education programs and Graduate Studies; the School of Arts, Sciences, and Technology (SoAST)—Psycholo-

Woes beset NTC refresher by Kaidee Mae Mauleon “NTC will become a truly ‘national’ institution whose impact is felt nationwide and beyond.” This was the statement of Ayala administration prior to their acquisition last April 2018 as they pioneered the ThreePhase Development Plan. The said plan involved the strategies and plans of the current Administration for the Institution. According to Engr. Vanessa Borja, Construction Manager, 90% of the major renovation progress is evident as seen on the school infrastructures. Newly-added and refurbished pieces of furniture, telephone and internet connections, and airconditioning units are installed in the offices, facilities, and laboratories. Furthermore, additional fire extinguishers and Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) were provided for the security and safety department. Behind the renovation works, financing is a vital cog to consider. According to Ms. Pam Wu, Executive Vice President (EVP) for Administration and Students’ Services, “Five hundred thirty (530) million pesos ang nakalaan para sa renobasyon at naroon pa rin tayo sa range na iyon.” Aside from the issues in financing, lack of readiness and preparation

to facilitate the 11, 279 enrollees became one of the transition pains that surfaced this academic year enrollment. Many students have been continuously returning to school because of the far-long queue in the offices due to the cut-off system. In an interview with Facilities Department Head Engr. Rolando Arcega, he asserted: “Ang enrollment process talaga ay dapat sa Sports Studio. Ngunit, hindi pa ito tapos gawin; kaya nagkaroon ng mahabang pila at siksikan sa hallway noong enrollment.” He then stressed his words of apology after the interview. Moreover, the ID process was also part of what caused the queue. Ms. Maricel Dollente, one of the IT Department staff, explained that only 250 students a day were accomodated because of the singleoperating machine for ID printing. Despite the ongoing renovation, the school officially opened and welcomed the students of A.Y. 2019-2020 on August 26. However, due to the nature of renovation progress, various problems have also transpired. One of these is the issue with regard to water supply. According to Engr. Borja, the school prioritized the 2 classrooms primarily for which

gy and Information Technology programs; and School of Business (SoB)—Accountancy and Hospitality Management programs. Dr. Edizon Fermin, Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA), emphasized that transforming “colleges” into “schools” would develop effectivity for course instructions in all programs. Transition Pains Students clamored on the inconveniences transpired in the first semester of A.Y. 20192020. These included the long queues, unorganized reservation processes during enrollment, and Physical Education (PE) class modification. With regard to the reservation process conflict, Mr. Carlo

Jimeno, Marketing and Admissions Director, reasoned that they released two online survey forms last semester to determine the students who will enroll including the subjects to be offered in the A.Y. 20192020. However, the subjects that the students have listed on the survey were dissolved and overbooked that led to the changes of subject they reserved. Mr. Jimeno explained the reasons behind these the conflicts that there were few number of students who answered the surveys and there were also those who reserved but did not enroll. On the other hand, the ID process was among the causes of long queue during

the first semester enrollment. In an interview with Mr. Irwin Lababit, Information Technology Head, he mentioned that there was only a single operating machine for ID printing. To avoid this problem for the succeeding enrollment, Mr. Lababit assured that his office already searched for new providers of ID printer and consumables outside the school for better ID process that could release approximately 450-500 IDs per day. It is important to note that last August 28, while the Academic Team posted that the students have freedom to choose their preferred PE class; majority of the listed schedules were not followed which 3

4 FUDANG AGAIN, 5 NEVER NEVER FORGET “The logo refresh conveys that NTC, guided by a long tradition of excellence, is attuned to modern times. This manifests the significant changes that NTC has undergone and its expanded vision of what NTC can become.” —NTC President Alfredo Ayala. For nine decades, the school seal has been affixed on diplomas, uniforms, patches, medals, and even used as a backdrop to the institutional-based events. Furthermore, according to Mr. Ayala, the rendition of school seal aims to reflect the school’s heritage by telling its story and making it timeless. The NTC marketing team in

collaboration with Plus63 Design Co., a Philippine-based design studio in brand identity designing for local and international firms, conducted a brand logo audit on February 20-22, 2019. Several series of focused group discussion (FGD) were also made as regards the school seal changes in light of its historic and salient symbol. The FGD session was participated in by randomly selected students, school employees, alumni, parents, and the general public. They were asked to draw the school seal with the official font and the most important symbolisms includ2
