Sports Tour to South Africa

From the Headmistress Dear Parents, See report on pages 4 & 5

Rarely has the wonderful support of FHS parents been more apparent than this term: the Careers Fair in early October; the panel of professional experts at the Parents’ Association AGM; the Sixth Form lectures every Monday afternoon and innumerable charity events have all gained from the time and expertise given most generously by so many of you. My sincere thanks.

Miss Addinall, Mrs. Forbes and Miss Green who also helped enormously behind the scenes.

Thank you also for the many emails and letters which were received after FHS’ first ever whole school Prize-giving evening at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on September 30th. It was a memorable opportunity at which to celebrate the academic success of pupils throughout the school: my thanks to Mrs. Longworth, Chair of the FHS Governing Council and to all the colleagues who presented prizes during the evening. In addition to the report on pages 8 and 9, photographs of Prize-giving – and of many other extracurricular events, not included in the newsletter - can be found on the school website (www.fhs-nw1.org.uk).

There have been many extra-curricular visits this term, including three trips during October half-term. The P.E. Department led what was described to me as, “The best FHS Sports Tour ever!”

Full details of the tour can be found in this newsletter; sincere thanks to the P.E. department and, in particular, Miss Tucker for all their hard work and organisation. At the same time, the Music Department undertook a most successful Choir Tour to Krakow and I was delighted to attend the penultimate concert in the magnificent (if chilly!)

Miss O’Toole and Mme. Briand took Sixth Form Art Historians on a short and intensive study trip to Florence, which was also a resounding success.

The FHS Charity Fashion Show in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Teenage Cancer Trust which was held at the London School of Fashion on Friday November 5th was a triumph for the six members of the Upper Sixth who devised and organised the event. Many thanks to those of you who contributed most generously to this evening, by offering help on the night, contributing clothes, shoes or prizes and giving the girls invaluable advice. Particular thanks also to Miss Baig, Miss O’Toole,

The school hosted the annual Quondam lunch on Saturday November 10th, for former pupils of the school. As ever, this was a most enjoyable event, which enabled “polished corners” to meet old friends and reminisce about their memories of school life. It was wonderful to meet many former pupils who had not re-visited the school since they left, such as Persephone Brigstocke, who attended FHS in the 1970s, while her mother, Mrs. Heather Brigstocke, was Headmistress.

As this goes to press, the main areas of the school are about to be transformed for the 2010 FHS Christmas Fair from 2-4pm on Saturday November 20th, masterminded by the Chair of the Parents’ Association Committee, Mrs Sue Silkstone. Thanks in anticipation to the many parents - and members of the Parents’ Association Committee, including Mr. Chiverton (Head of Thirds) - who give unstintingly of their time and energy to make this afternoon so enjoyable.

Cabaret will be the main school play this term, produced by Mrs. Oakley with musical direction by Mrs. Rolfe Johnson. Performances will be held in the Hall on Wednesday 1st DecemberFriday 3rd December, inclusive. Tickets are currently on sale in school.

The Senior Choir will be singing at the Lansdowne Club Charity Christmas Concert on Wednesday December 8th at 6:30pm. Our Carol Service will be held at 6:30pm on Wednesday 15th December in St. Cyprian’s Church.

Everyone is most welcome to join us for mince-pies and mulled wine in the Hall, afterwards.

Harvest Festival The Harvest Festival took place on the last day before half-term, yet preparations had been taking place for weeks beforehand! Each form created their own harvest box filled with yummy delights to be donated to North London Action for the Homeless. Girls also decorated their boxes, as they were displayed at the front of the church during the festival service, and staff were delighted to see a shopping trolley, a tin of Campbell’s soup and a tractor! The service went smoothly with a wonderful sermon from the Reverend Jude Bullock, along with excellent, thought-provoking readings.

Staff News Miss Angela Raynor, our much beloved and multi-talented School Secretary, is leaving at the end of November to pursue a new career in sport and fitness training, prior to her marriage next summer. She will be replaced by Ms. Claire Stypulkowski who has recently returned to London after working for many years at the John Madison University in Florence.

At the end of term, we shall say good bye to Mme. Briand who is relocating to Australia. Mme. Briand has made an outstanding contribution to many areas of school life, not least in her excellent contribution to the French and Spanish departments during her three years at FHS and we wish her every success in a new life “down-under”.

Mrs. Bachle Morris will go on maternity leave at the end of this term. She has been nothing less than an advertisement for “working mothers” and good wishes from us all go to Mrs. Bachle Morris and her husband.

Many congratulations to Mrs. Hillier, a member of the Classics Department, who has been awarded a second Master’s degree from the University of London to add to her Cambridge MA. Mrs. Hillier is currently embarking on a PhD. 2

Careers Evening 2010 Question: what do five clever lawyers, including a high profile criminal barrister, a busy music agent representing some of the brightest young voices, the CEO of In-Skin Media, a Professor of Medicine from Imperial College, a distinguished Economist, three television executives, two national newspaper journalists and a fashion designer have in common?

Our three television experts, one who commissions and buys programmes for independent television, another who runs a production company, and a third who makes documentaries about challenging subjects (she arrived fresh from a grilling with Peter Mandelson) decided to team up and work as a panel: together they fielded all sorts of questions from a room full of enthralled teenagers.

Answer: well, they all gave up their time on Wednesday 6th October to come and talk at the Careers Evening.

Our two newspaper writers, The Times Foreign Editor, and The Daily Mail Transport Editor, decided to do a double act to introduce girls to the ups, downs and hilarious side of being a journalist. Meanwhile BBC Chief Economics Correspondent Hugh Pym gave two talks before rushing off, not to do the ten o’clock news, but to take his wife out to a birthday dinner. Such dedication, and a brilliant example of work-life balance!

Our forty speakers provided a fantastic programme of presentations and informal consultations for all girls in the top four years of the school. We had representatives from a huge variety of career fields, from chemical engineering to film animation, from dentistry to photography, from architecture to working with pre-school children, from graphic design to dietetics, and from broadcasting to running successful London businesses in cake-making and stationery design.

Two of our guest experts worked in public relations, one in finance, another in cosmetics. The Army Careers Service sent Colonel Peacock, genial, smart and resilient enough to lock horns with an articulate member of the Lower Fifth who demanded to know exactly why women are still restricted from tank operations. The Royal Navy sent us glamorous uniformed Lieutenant Sarah Pearce, about to step back from schools liaison to begin a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

While most of our speakers are current FHS parents, some were from Quondam, our Old Girl network, another was a former FHS parent, and several others were friends of friends and parents. I cannot thank all of you enough for sharing your insights and sparking a huge amount of enthusiasm and serious thinking about future opportunities for “Polished Corners”.

Cadbury World On Thursday 4th November, the Upper Fourth undertook their annual trip to Cadbury World near Birmingham. Here, they investigated the living conditions of Victorian factory workers, followed by a tour around the chocolate factory learning about the origin of chocolate and how it is made. They also looked at the housing that George Cadbury built for his workers, offering them a better quality of life on the fourteen acre site surrounding the factory. Apart form a brief rain shower we were blessed with pleasant autumn weather. The girls had a great time, behaved superbly and were a credit to the school. My thanks to Miss Sainty, Mrs. Forde and Mrs. Hillier for accompanying us.

Sports Tour to South Africa October 2010

Lions and rhinos and deer, oh my! Thirty eight girls travelled to the wild shores of South Africa this October in what only could be described as the 'tour of a lifetime'.

It was more than just a sports tour, though, it was an education and an experience to rival no other.

The twelve day tour captured glimpses of a fantastic country and its many treasures, such as: Robben Island, Cape Point, township life, Table mountain plus being within touching distance of many dangerous and not so dangerous animals such as the Penguins, Birds, Monkeys, Rhinos, Giraffes, Seals, Lions, Springboks and Ostriches! With the tour spreading down to the Garden Route, nearly every type of scenery was viewed, with none more spectacular than the view from Table Mountain. Our fixtures were tough, with wins a hard fought bonus and the pressure of full length matches enough to tire out the girls... at least until they had a shower! The last year of bi-weekly training certainly paid dividends. After a wonderful trip, both the staff and girls must be thanked for their relentless energy and enthusiasm on tour - making it THE BEST SPORTS TOUR EVER! Miss Tucker Head of P.E. Department

Choir Tour of Poland October 2010 Several hours before the crack of dawn, a group of bleary-eyed Francis Holland girls congregated in Luton Airport. Despite the two hour delay, morale remained high as we boarded the plane armed with Percy Pigs and reams of music to perform.The concerts all ran smoothly: a particular highlight was our performance at the beautiful St. Katherine’s Church (we were pleased to see the friendly face of Mrs. Durham in the congregation) where the haunting acoustic allowed pieces such as Kodaly’s Ave Maria to resonate brilliantly.

The group made several trips including an excursion to Auschwitz. This was particularly moving as our tour guide had been captive there as a young girl. We visited the awe-inducing Salt Mines, where we had the privilege of singing in the chapel, carved out of the salt by the miners. We were invited to lick the walls (the salt had kept them bacteria free) and this induced high spirits among the group. While some girls found the mines unnerving due to their depth and labyrinthine qualities, we all greatly enjoyed the experience. We also spent a great deal of time in the medieval city centre, particularly perusing the amber jewellery in the covered market.

Thank you for a marvellous week, or indeed ‘Dziekuje’, to all the staff that made this tour possible – Mr. Thorne, Mrs. Oakley, Miss Taylor, Miss Hack, and above all, Mrs. Rolfe Johnson!

On Thursday 30th September 2010 at 7p.m, Chairman of FHS Governing Council, Mrs. Catherine Longworth walked on to the stage at Queen Elizabeth Hall on the South Bank to commence the first ever FHS Prizegiving. Governors, parents, teachers and pupils celebrated the academic and extra-curricular success of the year during a prize giving evening which included performances by the school choir and individual students.

History of Art Tour to Florence - October 2010 The Sixth Form History of Art students have just returned from a wonderful trip to Florence. The girls visited the city known as 'the cradle of the Renaissance' to see first hand many of the works that they have studied in the classroom. In the Uffizi Gallery the girls had the opportunity to examine up close Botticelli's enigmatic 'La Primavera', a favourite work of many. The group was wowed

by Michelangelo's 17 foot David in the Accademia, and thoroughly exhausted after a steep climb up the impressive Duomo from which the beauty of Florence can be seen from high above. In addition to visiting a total of four museums and three churches the girls still found time to shop in Florence's vibrant historic centre and eat some fantastic food. Each day was finished with a visit to a new Gelato bar. Miss Briand and I would like to thank the History of Art girls for making this such a memorable trip.

The Sponsored Walk: 5th October 2010 On the afternoon of October 5th, people relaxing in Regent’s Park may have been more than a little surprised to see superheroes, fairies, Disney characters and even a Teletubby walking around Regent’s Park! These were in fact FHS girls in their fancy dress costumes taking part in the annual charity sponsored walk with the purpose of raising money for the school charities. All girls in the school took part and completed at least one lap of the route around the park, with some girls completing three, showing their wonderful enthusiasm and motivation. Many girls arranged to have their dogs brought to the park to take part in the event, and the cutest dog competition was all part of the fun. It was a highly enjoyable day which I am sure girls will remember for the rest of the year! A huge thank-you firstly to the Help Fund girls who organised the photography on the day as well as the dog competition, and secondly to girls and staff for making this an enjoyable and memorable event.

FHS raises money for Teenage Cancer Trust and Marie Curie Cancer Care in November Charity Fashion Show

The Fashion Show held at the London College of Fashion, John Prince's Street, on Friday 5th November was a huge success. The sum raised for the Teenage Cancer Trust and Marie Curie Cancer Care will shortly be announced.

We would like to thank all parents, especially Adrian Seal for taking some wonderful photographs of the evening, as seen on this page and the school website.

Third Year Activity Day to Sayers Croft

Building a ballista

On the 24th September, the Thirds visited a countryside venue called Sayers Croft. It is a large area of land that is covered in trees and is filled with fields and fun. Many activities occur here on a daily basis. These include raft building, team challenge, high ropes, zip wire, ballista (catapult building) and outdoor problem-solving games. The point of the trip was to get to know everyone, not just the people in your class, so all the Thirds were mixed up and then sat in our new groups, chatting, while awaiting instruction. Each group was given different activities to do at different times.

My group did the team challenge, zip wire and then ballista.

Team time!

It was raining; spitting in fact, which is almost worse (so soft, yet so annoying). However, we were all determined to have fun, so we endured it.

As we approached the Team Challenge course, we huddled in our coats. The lady who was taking us for Team Challenge told us to each stand on one of the stumps of wood which were placed in a circular formation. The aim was to work as a team to reach the key (in the middle of our circle) and unlock the gate that would give us access to further parts of the course. However, we were not allowed to touch the ground with our feet. This would have been impossible without equipment, but we did have some - three planks to balance on the stumps (for walking across), a hook to reach the key and, of course, our brains. After a lot of conferring and some difficulty, we managed to unlock the gate.

The rest of the course was not dissimilar and we had to take the planks around the majority of these obstacles as well.

This meant that freezing cold fingers became freezing cold HURTING fingers.

After crawling through tyres, walking along ropes and logs, we eventually reached the end of the course, exhausted but very pleased with ourselves.

Exploring new heights The zip wire was a favourite of most of my group (including me!) although, at first, some of us were a little bit nervous.

We walked through a forest to reach the activity. A colossal tree loomed above our heads with a ladder resting upon it and, after climbing some more, this led to a square, wooden platform with an instructor there waiting for us. Depending on where you were in the queue of people waiting to have a go, the wait seemed much longer than it was. It was raining more heavily by then; however, the zip wire was definitely worth the wait.

After ascending the ladder and the foot and hand holds, I was sure I couldn’t be any more exhilarated - or nervous. I was surprised at how good it felt to be so high up. Before I had time to take in the view, I was whizzing down the wire, tucking my knees in so as to go extra fast.

Ballista was pretty much making catapults – except we were using broom handles to produce them. We worked in teams within our group to create a giant sponge flinger. Yes, we were already cold, but still wanted to fling wet sponges at each other. Towards the end of the activity, we began chucking the sponges randomly at each other; faces, hands, legs, bodies, to get as soaked as possible!

Congratulations to all of the Bronze candidates this year. They all passed their expedition with flying colours and now need to get cracking with their other sections. The Silver award starts next May!!

Another successful Christmas Fair!

The school was jumping with merriment and excitement to welcome in the start of the festive season – from the Chocolate and Bottle Tombolas, the rapturous playing of Pink Ladies, the throbbing Urban Outfitters bargain basement sale, the Accessories and Stocking Filler room, the delicious offerings of the Xmas Café to the incredible Santa’s Grotto run by Rebecca Lumley and her Elves…!!

We know a lot of money has been raised but we’re still totting it up and will report the final profit to you in the next Newsletter. All of this would not be possible without the amazing efforts of certain parents, bakers, FHS staff and most especially the girls themselves who gave much of their valuable time and supreme hard work – I thank you all most sincerely for joining as an invincible team to bring so much joy and happiness to so many.

Congratulations to Rachel Barker, Angelina Filchukova, Samar Ahmed and Lucy Collins who represented Francis Holland at the annual Dulwich Debating Competition on Saturday 25th September. It was a long day involving four rounds of debates and both teams competed extremely well; out of forty-eight schools, they came eighteenth and thirty-seventh respectively. This was a fantastic achievement!

FHS Sports Report Wow! What an awesome start to a school year. With fixturesa-plenty and great weather to boot, we certainly have started the year with a bang. We have already competed in the u16 & Senior Middlesex Netball tournament this term and the girls represented Francis Holland magnificently against some very tough opposition. More news on the u14 & u15 Middlesex Netball tournament will be in next term’s newsletter. The Thirds Hockey trials have just been completed and their training and fixtures will commence straight away.

Well done to our South Africa Sports tourists on a great Hockey and Netball tour. The girls really challenged the South African giants and had a fantastic time over the course of the twelve days. A lot of the work for the tour was done behind the scenes though; this took place on a Tuesday and Friday morning training session. A lot of commitment and dedication was shown by all of the girls, which made the accompanying staff very proud of the students. This testament to how hard they worked was reinforced by the superb fundraising the girls did before the tour for the Fisantekraal Township. A grand total of £4233 was raised and will go towards the development of the Township and educational facilities. It was wonderful for the girls to tour the Township and to see first hand the place that all of their fundraising money actually will benefit – well done!

Royal Parks 3K PULSE RUN 10th October 2010 FHS – Fastest Team 2010

In conjunction with the Royal Parks half marathon, the 3K Pulse run was held for children aged 11 to 16. For the first time this year there was a schools' category and FHS entered twenty two runners. Congratulations to all who ran, winning the title of Fastest Team 2010, an amazing achievement – we are hugely proud!

The day was a great success, with ideal running conditions ,and all girls, of varying fitness levels, were able to compete and feel the atmosphere of a ‘fun run’.

The next major event on the PE calendar is the annual Interform Hockey tournament. Forms will put forward two Hockey teams into a round robin competition to be held throughout the penultimate week of term. The winning form will receive a commemorative shield and there is also a ‘best and fairest’ medal for an individual in each year. More details will be put on the website closer to the competition.

By now all parents should have received a fixture list if their daughter is a member of a school team. This list (which can also be found on the school website) gives a comprehensive fixture agenda for the Autumn term, and I am hoping that parents might be able to organise their time to come out and watch their daughters play – please! There is also an address list of all of the schools we play online.

A reminder again for parents: please name your daughter’s PE kit. Lost property is looking too healthy at the moment with unnamed kit, so please put full names on the insides of garments and initials on the left side of all PE kit. Labels can be purchased from www.jjcash.co.uk at a reasonable price. They are extra wide tapes with a white background and black writing that look very smart. Also do encourage your daughters to always lock their lockers!

Running champions

Not only was there training twice a week, the girls were raising money for the ‘Right to Play’ charity and raised over £500 (and still counting) through a cake sale, raffle and sponsorship. Many thanks to all parents and girls who contributed, the money has gone to a very worthy cause.

Running Club is every Wednesday at 12.50 and due to popular demand, Thursdays at 8.00am – start training for next year!

The Globetrotters have recently been putting their creative talents to the test with a competition to come up with a logo for the long-running and popular club.

Traffic Regulations in Ivor Place As some FHS parents are aware, a cctv camera has very recently been installed by Westminster Council, on the lamp post nearest to the main school entrance. Parking infringements in Ivor Place are now instantly recorded by cctv and result in an automatic parking fine.

The winner was Rose Brookfield in 3J with a humorous design that made everybody smile.

Well done Rose!

Parking is not allowed in the sections of Ivor Place in which there are kerb markings (there are no kerb markings in some areas). The Bursar and the Chair of Governors are currently making strong representations to the Westminster Council to extend the current ten minute dispensation at the beginning and end of the school day. We shall do our utmost to establish more realistic parking regulations in the vicinity of the school.
