Freedom High School builds new turf field

Freedom High School’s new turf field serves as home to numerous sports teams. The field was dedicated Aug. 19, 2016 prior to the start of the 2016-2017 school year.

After years of waiting, Freedom High School finally has a turf field it can call its own.

When the turf field was placed inside the Frank Banko stadium in 2005, Freedom was promised a turf field as well.

However, when the economy started to slow, so did the idea of a new field.

Therefore, Freedom High School’s sport teams were forced to use rigid and uneven fields, which often led to many injuries, while on the other side of town, Liberty High School’s sports teams were training on a high-quality field, allowing them to well-prepare themselves for other teams in the Lehigh Valley that also train on synthetic turf fields.

Jump ahead 11 years, and the turf talk was revisited.

In February 2016, the Bethlehem Area School Board finally took a vote on the building of the turf field, and the final vote was 7-2 in favor of the field.

Construction on the field began quickly after the vote, and it was finished and opened late summer.

The teams that use or will use the field are boys’ and girls’ soccer, boys’ and girls’ lacrosse, field hockey, and the football teams.

“All teams [at Freedom] can now train on an A1 facility and really compete at the highest level,” said Jared Wisdom, senior soccer player.

So far, the feedback from parents and athletes has been very positive.

“Other parents and I think we are very lucky to have such a nice facility,” said Mrs. Karyn Callaghan, parent.

Outside of just athletes using the field, the band uses the field to practice every other day.

Furthermore, the school expects to offer some nights where the local youth community sports teams will be invited to play on the field.

“I would like to work with the BTAA (Bethlehem Township Athletic Association) reps to get a night game of [youth] soccer/football on the field so [the younger athletes] could come and see it and get excited,” said Mr. Nate Stannard, FHS athletic director.

The 2016 Summer Olympics Rio de Janeiro, a city in Brazil known mainly for its enormous statue, Christ the Redeemer, Photo: Daily Times which rests upon the Corcovado mountain, was home of the 2016 summer Olympics games.

The biggest sporting competition in the world happens every four years, and lasts for 16 days this year. The dates chosen for 2016 were Aug. 5 Aug. 21, with a total of 205 different National Olympic Committees or (N.O.C.) competed in the nation wide event. This summer, two new committees, Kosovo and South Sudan, participated in their first ever Olympic games. Kosovo ended up with a gold medal for Judo, putting their medal count at 1 along with Jordan and Fiji's Committees. Two of the most notable countries winning their first and well deserved gold medal are Puerto Rico and Vietnam. Easily two of the most influential, successful and well known Olympians of this generation, Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt, both ended their amazing athletic careers at the ages of 31 and 30. Phelps, being one of the fastest men in water, finished his career with a final medal count of 28 within 5 appearances in the games.

Now the question is who will be the next up and coming champion at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

Pokemon Go is more than just some app like Angry Birds or Temple Run, but more of an adventure and experience. Pokemon itself was at first a video game released in 1996 in Japan by Nintendo Soon, after a TV show was created. It did not make its way over into the United States until two years later in 1998. The TV show features a protagonist by the name of Ash Ketchum whose catchphrase and the plot of the whole storyline ironically is to catch’em all. Quickly, the Pokemon universe became widely popular amongst all the kids in the neighborhood until everyone grew up and had responsibilities. Most people grew out of their handhelds and were replaced with cell phones. Nintendo kept making games for generations to come, but could never broaden their audience to the original Pokemon fans. So, Nintendo collaborates with a mobile game company, Niantic with the idea of turning every kid's fantasy into a reality. They redefined what it really means to be a Pokemon trainer by using Google maps to track your location so that you physically have to search for these pocket monsters, as translated. Released on Jul. 6 of 2016, Pokemon Go is a social phenomenon that helps people of all ages to get out of their house and allowed to explore and meet new people while playing a 90s video game reinvented. People can recreate their childhood dreams just play for fun, as it is not about catching them all, it is really about the experience that nothing else can give to you. People who have never even heard of the game our being recommended from their friends who heard it from someone else and so forth. Now the question is are you playing Pokemon Go, and if so, who have you met, what things have you seen and what memories have you made that you'll never forget?

In a matter of 7 days, a catastrophic downpour engulfed the majority of Louisiana with an estimated 6,900,000,000,000 gallons of water.

13 people lost their lives and while most of the deaths occurred in Baton Rouge, where the storm hit the hardest, some parts weighing in at over 31 inches of rainfall, while the city of Shreveport only got about an inch or two. There were over 60,000 homes damaged, 20,000 people rescued, 1,000 animals saved and rivers as high as almost 18 feet deep.

According to the Red Cross, it will take at least $30 million to repair all the damages. There are plenty of ways to help the suffering people of Louisiana; by volunteering or donating to the Salvation Army’s canteens stationed throughout the affected areas, getting involved with many organizations who help animals, provide shelters and most importantly; help to clean up and begin to rebuild all the devastated communities.

volunteer in. You can stock products, work in food stands, and volunteer with games and rides. There are so many food and dessert stands and tents that offer many delicious treats; a local favorite being the Aw Shucks Roasted Corn, with the secret seasoning sprinkled on top. Will you attend Musik Fest next year, and if so, what foods will you try, with whom will you volunteer, and how will you be apart of one the biggest music festivals in the country?

The Riot Squad has showcased their school spirit for many seasons, at both home and away games for Freedom High School’s athletic teams. The Riot Squad is a student-led organization that cheers at Freedom’s athletic events. The game against Easton was the Friday before 9/11, so the student section had an American theme with red, white, and blue paint. ‘‘We are constantly trying to come up with new themes,” said Olivia D’ Aprile, one of the leaders of the Riot Squad.

The student section is open to all members of Freedom High School looking to cheer on their favorite team. One of the new things they are trying to do is get more of the

underclassmen involved.

“We want to get freshmen involved to continue the tradition,’’ said Meckenzie Herman, a leader of the Riot Squad.

“It is fun and a great experience for all grades,’’ said Olivia D'Aprile.

The Riot Squad is also changing the number of events it attends.

“We are trying to make it to more than just football games,’’ said Mike Buchner, another leader of the Riot Squad.

Charter schools bleeding public school districts dry BASD loses $22 million to charter schools every year Freedom Forum Staff

Charter schools have been in the news recently, and not for anything good. Here is a quick lesson on charter schools.

Charter schools are defined as, “public schools operating under a charter; essentially a contract entered into between the school and its authorizing agency,” according to the National Charter School Resource Center.

Currently, the Bethlehem Area School District (BASD) has 3 charters; Lehigh Valley Regional Academy Charter School, Lehigh Valley Dual Language Charter School, and Lehigh Valley High School for the Arts Charter. All of these charters must be authorized by the local school district, which in this case, is the BASD. What many people may not know is that charter schools are funded by public taxpayers’ dollars. Last year alone, the publicly funded BASD sent nearly $22 million, to local charter schools, including the three located in the district and about 20 more located either in the Lehigh Valley or cyber charter schools.

That is “more than $10,000 per regular education students and about $21,000 per special education student [attending a charter school],” according to an article by lehighvalleylive.com.

This can either be taken as a good thing or a bad thing. Some might say that Americans should have the choice to choose where they send their child to school. Some might be happy that taxpayers are providing and funding another source of schooling for children, or some could be unhappy that taxpayers are footing the bill for a

group of people that want a more exclusive and supposedly better education for their children.

“I don’t think [school choice] should allow for charter schools to take money from public school districts,” said Hailey Atiyeh, senior.

Another reason that might cause upset in the community over this topic, is the idea of who holds the public school districts and public charter schools accountable.

Public school districts are clearly funded by public funds or taxes, so there has to be some accountability for the budget and who controls it, which is where an elected school board comes in. The BASD has a school board of 9 members, with 4 or 5 of them up for public re-election every 2 years.

Through these members and these elections, the actions of the school district and its board are held under a spotlight and observed. This is how the public has its say in the public education system.

However, accountability is very different in a charter school system.

Their boards are privately elected or appointed. Often times, it is parents, community members, and even business officials who are trustees or members of these boards, with no accountability to the general public when it comes to funds raised through public tax dollars. This creates conflict of interest in many cases.

“To me, this is the heart of why I oppose charter schools—they subvert the idea of public education by receiving public tax dollars through the district tuition payments, but they are not accountable to the public and voters because their boards are not

elected. This is a diversion of public money—meant to support the public good—to privately run charters. I believe this is fundamentally wrong and defies democratic principles,” said Dr. Joseph Roy, superintendent of BASD, in an email interview.

Charter schools are a part of the modern education system, whether we like it or not, but it is important that taxpayers and members of the public know what these unique schools are doing; taking much needed money from the public school districts’ pockets. The people who control this money are not held accountable. There is no one to stand up to them and there should be.

With charter schools becoming increasingly more aggressive and less regulated, change needs to happen in the system that is failing brick and mortar public schools; change that can start with asking questions and demanding accountability from the people taking your tax money.

Vaping, also known as electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, is taking over the smoking world.

Smoking has been a widely spread habit among many Americans for years and years.

E-cigarettes have been on the market in the U.S. since 2008 and have gained wider use in recent years, according to livescience.com.

People vape for many reasons. It is cheaper than regular cigarettes, it is safer, or they think it is the cool new thing to do.

“Probably about the age of 13 I started doing it. I just loved the tricks people do and wanted to do it as well,” said Tyler Andre, former Freedom student.

Vaping has taken over the smoking nation, and for the people who cannot afford regular cigarettes, vaping provides an cheaper alternative.

Vaping using an e-cigarette is where you inhale and exhale vapor that comes in many different flavors. They are battery operated devices that heat a liquid usually containing nicotine.

Although vaping can be safer than smoking normal cigarettes, it can also lead to harmful cravings.

A lot of people who vape do it because they are slowly trying to quit smoking, yet they still get the sensation of inhaling and exhaling vapor. “[A] majority of the people who vape usually stick to it. Once you start, nothing will compare to the enjoyment of it.

So in my opinion, no. Vaping does not lead to any harmful cravings,” said Andre.

Vaping has become such an epidemic among teens that many high schools are including vapes into their “no tobacco” policy.

However, vaping is not dangerous just because it can lead to smoking cigarettes. Vaping itself can have a huge effect on the body because the vapor contains nicotine, which is a highly addictive drug that can be harmful to the human body.

One of the most dangerous things about e-cigarettes is that they may keep people smoking conventional cigarettes longer, rather than encourage them to attempt to quit, according to Stanton Glantz, a professor of medicine and the director of Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco.

However, many people overlook the consequences of using vapes, in order to fit into the environment around them.

about learning new tricks and finding new flavors,” said Andre.

Yes, vaping may be the “cool” thing to do in high school. But, it can put teens’ bodies and minds at risk. Once the smoking sensation enters the mind and body, it is hard to get it to leave.

In addition to being cheaper than conventional cigarettes, another big reason teens are using it more is because it is easier to get access to the vapor.

E-cigarettes and vape juices can be purchased on sites like Amazon or Ebay. Many people who have friends that vape may purchase juices from them as well.

There is a simple solution to avoiding the addiction and dangers of vaping.

Just do not start.

The United Kingdom voted to leave the EU What is Brexit?

On June 23, 2016, while most American high school students were tanning by the pool, adults in the United Kingdom were heading out to local referendum locations to vote either ‘Stay’ or ‘Leave’.

The Brexit, meaning British exit, was a referendum in which all the eligible voting-age adults from the United Kingdom (UK) participated.

The voters decided whether the United Kingdom would stay or leave the European Union (EU).

To most American teenagers, the terms ‘United Kingdom’ and ‘European Union’ may sound confusing. Do not be worried. The United Kingdom is one sovereign state that consists of the countries England,

regarding it.

In addition, the European Union is a group of 28 countries that promote peace. The countries in the EU, aside from the UK, all use the “euro” as currency, and citizens within the European Union can work in any country within the European Union.

After the result of the referendum was publicized, the Prime Minister of Britain David Cameron stepped down from his position. Cameron, a pro-stay official, was upset with the decision to leave. He was replaced by Theresa May. May, who was also pro-stay, was more open to working with the decision of the United Kingdom.

The United Kingdom will not cut off all ties with the EU all at once; it will be a process. May shared that she will start the separation process by late 2016. Brexit Secretary David Davis explained that by 2018, the United Kingdom can be completely free from the European Union.

With the presidential election only 2 months away, the American people are having a difficult time deciding between what has been described as a choice between the lesser of two evils; Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. But are there other options for those who feel this way?

The answer is a resounding yes! This year there are 2 third party options: Libertarian Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein.

Gary Johnson, a two-term senator of New Mexico, chose Bill Weld of Massachusetts to run as his vice president.

“As governor of New Mexico, I vetoed wasteful spending 750 times, cut taxes 14 times and left the state with new highways, bridges, schools, hospitals and a $1 billion surplus without raising taxes a penny,” Johnson said in an online news article by Washington’s Top News.

Jill Stein, a physician from Massachusetts, ran in the 2012 election after she received more than 450,00 votes,

which according to History Channel is more than any other female presidential candidate to date.

Stein is running because she believes that the current candidates in the election are not talking about the issues and that those who do not focus on the economic, social, and environmental crises in this world need to be

kicked out of office. She believes that the Green Party has a chance to make a change and force the bigger names to focus on the issues, just like Johnson.

The American people see these candidates as viable options because they do not want Clinton or Trump in office.

A poll done by Real Clear Politics shows that on September 9, Donald Trump had an unfavorable rating

of 58.4 percent and a favorable rating of 37.7 percent, while Hillary Clinton has an unfavorable rating of 54.8 percent and a favorable rating of 41.7 percent.

With these unfavorable ratings through the roof, the third party candidates believe they have a chance of winning or at least impacting the vote.

The problem with third party candidates is that the voters never believe that these underdogs can win. With this doubt, most people end up voting for a Republican or Democrat candidate.

The last time a third party candidate affected the race was in 2000 when Al Gore won the popular vote, but George Bush won the electoral college. The third party candidate pushed Bush to win over Al Gore. This year though there may be a chance.

With the “#neverhillary” and “#nevertrump” groups out there, more and more people are turning to the third party candidates.

So are there other viable options out there, and can they win? Well, that question can only be answered in the polls by educated voters.

Freedom High School welcomes back former alumni (class of 2002), Mr. Chad Correll to the Health and Physical Education department.

“Baseball was my sport; I played second base for Freedom,” said Mr. Correll.

This year FHS welcomes Mrs. Erin Jordan who is a new ESOL teacher. Her father is former alumni, and her mother-in-law was the former athletic director.

“I feel like I finally found home in a school,” said Mrs. Jordan.

Welcome to Mr. Richard Kressly, the new FHS Project Lead The Way Teacher.

“I have taught a lot of places, but I like the culture and the vibe here,” said Mr. Kressley.

Freedom is happy to welcome Mrs. Teresa Salvatore to the English department.

“I have met the most professional, supportive, educators that are truly fantastic. I love it here. I hope to be here for a long while,” said Mrs. Salvatore.

The Freedom Family is proud to welcome new staff member, Mr. John Harvey to the science department.

“The students here are respectful, and the staff is welcoming,” said Mr. Harvey when asked how he enjoys teaching at FHS.

Welcome to Mr. Jeremy Schuler, the new US History 3 teacher.

“I always wanted to be a 20th century history teacher and to coach football or basketball,” said Mr. Schuler.

Freedom Family welcomes Mrs. Karen Buchanan to the English Department.

“I'm excited to be involved with high school kids again! I love that they are just figuring out where their lives are going to take them,” said Mrs. Buchanan.

Welcome to Mr. Brent Koch, our new photography teacher.

“My colleagues have been so welcoming and my students remind me everyday why my decision to be an educator was the best decision I could have ever made,” said Mr. Koch.

FHS welcomes back English teacher Mrs. Kaitlin O’Leary.

“I have had a wonderful experience so far! The Freedom Family is a very special facet of this school,” said Mrs. O'Leary.

“Our sports are planned to go off without a hitch this year.

We have great coaching staff and tons of student support from the Riot Squad,” said Mr. Stannard.

“I love it here. Ever since I left, I’ve been trying to come back. It was the first place I ever taught; the staff is supportive and friendly. I love the kids,” said Mrs. Iticovici.

“I have two kids who are already a part of the Freedom Family, and I am looking forward to beginning my journey as a part of it as well,” said Mrs. Schaeffer.

“I approach this new adventure as I have any other, with a smile. I am thrilled to be teaching science and excited to see what the year has in store,” said Mrs. Ruggiero.

Looking back, but excited for the future

As the school year begins, seniors at Freedom High School already question where the time has gone.

From getting lost as freshman to counting down days until graduation, seniors reflect on their favorite moments, activities, and clubs that made these 4 years the best ones yet.

Freedom High School seniors prepare for the future by applying to colleges, asking for recommendation letters, and finishing strong with good grades.

The stress of the future pushes the senior class to get more involved and make the most out of the last year.

Not knowing what the future holds, the senior class looks back on all the times that made sleepless nights, stressful Sundays, and cram sessions worth it.

RJ Judge, senior, is a part of many organizations at Freedom such as the soccer team, Mini THON, FBLA, ski club, BBQ club, Freedom’s chapter of the Young Americans Foundation, Riot Squad, and National Honors Society.

“Ever since my freshman year, I always felt like I had a place in the Riot Squad, sports teams, clubs, and other organizations,” said Judge.

The idea of Freedom Family is the push for everyone to feel together and more involved in the school community.

The past 3 years have left the fourth-

year high schoolers with many memories and most will not be forgotten.

The 2017 senior class has taken Freedom Family to a new level trying to make all classes get involved and enjoy their high school experience.

“My favorite memory was freshman year beating Liberty in double overtime in soccer,” said Judge.

Being involved in sport teams and clubs allows students to make memories that will last a lifetime.

With less than a year to go, many more memories are to come and excitement for the future is beyond words.

Overall, the senior class is ready to begin the next chapter but will not forget the experiences that shaped them into the people they are today.

Without WiFi, people would be as lost as blind mice in a maze. Freedom High School (FHS) does have WiFi, but there are restrictions to some apps. Throwback to when students actually connected seamlessly and easily to the school’s WiFi. That was until social media apps like Snapchat became blocked. It is not clear who the blocker really is. Some say it is the Bethlehem Area School District (BASD), and some say it is outside of BASD’s control.

Last year’s blocking the access of apps was thought to be a senior prank. Obviously not, because the WiFi, still does not allow access to

certain apps. No one understands why Snapchat does not work at FHS. Everyone can agree this is very annoying because Snapchat is a highly popular app among the student population.

Let’s be real. No one is really using their mobile devices to check Google classroom for stream updates. We want to check Twitter for new Tweets and Snapchat for new streaks.

The powerful controller of the WiFi does not get it. The only reason students connect to the WiFi is so they do not use their data going on Google classroom or checking their grades, which at this point, is the only thing the school’s WiFi is good for anymore. However, even that is a struggle some days.

Dear Gabi, Where did the summer go?

I can’t believe that my super late nights, and long lazy days are over.

Now everyone is back in the swing of things.

I mean, everyone except me. I am having a really difficult time falling asleep at a decent hour at night, and waking up in enough time that I’m not running to catch the bus.

As if that’s not enough to worry about, I also have to take into account my fall sport practices, and nightly homework.

Why can’t I just go to sleep at the time that I want? And what can I do to help me wake up in the morning?

Do you have any suggestions to help me get back in the school rhythm, and manage enough time for sleep?

Dear Sleepless in Bethlehem, I completely understand your comment about the summer flying by because I feel the same exact way.

I also know how busy the beginning of the year can be, especially with a fall sport because I happen to play one myself.

I have plenty of ideas that can help you get more comfortable with your adjusting schedule.

I know it is challenging to get back into the groove, so I hope these tips will help.

My first suggestion is to give yourself a bed time. I know it sounds really silly, but I am telling you it works. When you go to the bed at the same time every night repeatedly, it is a lot easier for your body to shut down. If this works for you, and you are finding it easier to get to bed at night, then you can make your time later, or eliminate it.

Another important part of sleep is getting your things done so you can get to bed at a decent hour. I was talking to a good friend of mine, who

suggested a system that she has been trying this year for her homework and projects. When you begin an assignment, you devote all of your energy and focus to that assignment for 25 minutes. This means absolutely no distractions. Then, after you have completed the assignment thoroughly, take a 5-minute break to do whatever you would like, followed by another 25-minute session. Then after an hour, you take a 10-minute break, and continue this system until your assignment is finished. I have tried out this system myself over the past few days of school, and I find it to be very effective. The main reason why it is so helpful is because during your homework time, you are not twiddling your thumbs.

Now that you have a new time management system to try, let’s discuss some more ways to help you get some zzz’s.

One thing I always do to help me unwind, after I have finished my chores, is take a hot shower. It relaxes my muscles after a long day at school, followed by a 2-hour practice.

Another thing that always helps me unwind is to read for a few minutes in

my bed. However, if you are not a reader, I completely understand (as my sister teases me all the time).

Lastly, my number one piece of advice is cut off your electronics 20 to 25 minutes before trying to go to sleep.

Looking through your feeds, shopping online, and watching tv, make it 10 times more difficult for you to knock out at night.

Don’t believe me? According to Washington Post online, “However, light—particularly of the blue variety —can keep the pineal gland from releasing melatonin, thus warding off sleepiness. You don’t have to be staring directly at a television or computer screen: If enough blue light hits the eye, the gland can stop releasing melatonin.”

Remember, while all that stuff may be fun before bed, it is really not worth it.

With the formation of the Bethlehem Area School District– encompassing Bethlehem City, Bethlehem Township, Fountain Hill, Freemansburg, and Hanover Township – to take effect in a year, new boundaries would be drawn to

Freemansburg students would lose the choice of Hellertown or Wilson and be moved …

And where would the city boundary be drawn separating Bethlehem High School classmates into two schools?

University (including Freemansburg) would attend the new high school. On the north side, all students north of Spring Garden school, east through Bethlehem Township and west through Hanover Township (as far as the Allentown border) would attend the new school.

But what about this new high school? It was currently a muddy construction site on the city/township border–without a name. What would it be called?

Uniting the community–Mini-THON 2017 Upcoming Mini-THON activities Destiny Panik The Freedom Forum

Mini-THON is a student run organization in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania known for its contribution of funds to help find a cure for pediatric cancer.

Freedom High school offers this generous club, and it creates a family within that all contribute their time and effort into a good cause. Newly appointed Junior Overall, Bella Pompa, is more than thrilled to get a head start on fun activities such as the upcoming color run and fall festival.

"We invite everyone to come to our Gold Out Game at Emmaus High School on September 30. We will be selling gold shirts for our game as well as yellow ribbons in which all money raised will go towards the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley. Also, we invite everyone to participate in our Color Run on October 8. We are planning a new event called Fall Festival which will be on October 22. We invite all of the community to come out for a fun

night of fall themed games and good food," said Pompa.

Ashley Morales, this year’s corporate fundraising captain, said that Mini-THON is introducing many new activities this year. Everyone is encouraged throughout the year to participate and join Mini-THON. “There's power in numbers. Specifically in corporate fundraising, the more people we have reaching out to businesses and getting our mission out there, the greater the number of sponsorships and money we can raise for the kids,” said Ashley Morales, corporate fundraising captain.

Last year, Mini-THON was able to raise a total of $125,857 to donate to the Four Diamonds foundation, a foundation dedicated to earning money to put towards the fight to cure cancer.

Events captain Tejpal Randhawa explains how her committee is always trying to incorporate our community as a whole.

“This year we're really trying to get the whole community involved instead of just BASD students so we've

opened up a sports team discount for local high school and college teams as well as a family discount aimed at elementary school families. Hopefully this will help us achieve our $3000 goal for the color run and spread awareness,” said Randhawa.

Mini-THON has helped many families dealing with cancer by bringing them together to become a family with numerous students who want to help in any possible way. It is MiniTHON’s mission to end the fight of cancer today.

“We are very excited to embark on a new year of Mini-THON and to see how much we can accomplish together! Some key aspects of Mini-THON we are focusing on this year is spreading awareness about childhood cancer rather than just raising money, getting our community involved, getting to know our Mini-THON families, and having more active participation from our members,” said Pompa.

Was the fashion line a hot mess or Kanye’s best?

With New York Fashion week finally here, one of the most famous weeks for designers to showcase their new collections, Kanye unveils his newest line “Season 4 Yeezy.” But as we start to see his new line, we find ourselves asking, “Is Kanye as visionary as we think?”

When Season 3 Yeezy unveiled his new collection at MSG in February 2016, the neutral themed oversized sweatshirts, knit dresses, leggings, jackets, bodysuits, and new desert boots along with the snug-fitting heels were a hit.

Although there were many highfashion rules broken with the show, most of the reviews were presented in a positive light.

Kanye has been known as having an arrogant persona, and he is not one for following the rules, but this time it seems he has gone a bit too far. And the fashion world is not happy.

If we start from the beginning, there were already big red signs of Kanye’s collection breaking rules. He began with an open casting stating “multiracial women only” which was a euphemism for wanting only ligh -skinned models.

This created a storm in the black community.

Subjected to hours of waiting in queues, women, who had little to no experience in modeling, waited in line hoping that they would be lucky enough to gain a spot in Season 4 Yeezy. Obviously a ploy, Kanye used this to save thousands and thousands on booking top models.

If that was not enough, let's move on to the actual event.

As the Kardashians show up 75 minutes late to Kanye’s event, placing the show on hold, models dropped like flies in the grassy knoll that was

encased by the white runway.

People from the audience got up and took care of the collapsed models by helping them up and giving them water. Finally, the show begins, and it has turned into an utter train wreck.

As women walk down the runway, one can see that almost all these women are amateurs at best; their runway walk would make the fashion gods cringe. To show the lack of quality in Kanye’s apparel, many girls’ heels broke while walking, leaving them to be embarrassed in front of the whole

fashion community.

Untrained models were thrown into the show for their aesthetic and tossed to the elites of fashion as their footwear gave up on them. If these girls ever wanted to continue pursuing this career, they would not have much success. They have already humiliated themselves. This again shows, Kanye’s arrogance and lack of care towards his models.

As critics left the show, the negative comments towards the show were quite extravagant in size. The New York Post deemed the show a “total disaster” and other critics has referred to this as hell on earth.

As much as we want Kanye’s line to succeed, I think it is time to realize that Kanye does not belong in the fashion industry, and I am sure the industry itself has noticed as well.

In my opinion, this would never happen in any other brand. It is not only unacceptable, it is also unprofessional.

I think we can all conclude that this is everything but Kanye’s best.

Looking for a good book that will keep you guessing who did it? “The Girl on the Train” by Paula Hawkins is the book you are looking for.

This book is fantastic. It is so good that it is being made into a movie that comes out October 7. So make sure to grab your friends, popcorn, and soda, and head down to your local movie theater.

The book itself revolves around a

young woman, Rachel Watson, who rides the train everyday. Every time she rides that train, she passes a couple who live in a house near her old place, and she creates a life for them in her head. Until one day she sees the girl (whom she calls Jess) kissing another man, and a few days later “Jess” goes missing. Rachel then becomes stuck in the mystery, revealing the truth along with lies that were meant to stay hidden forever.

“The Girl on the Train” is a mystery

and that allows the reader to see just how everyone is connected and how the characters act. There is a huge plot twist at the end that nobody sees coming.

The novel itself was very well written, and it was nice to see the characters point of views, thus giving more insight into how the characters really feel or think. The diction was not too advanced, so anyone should be fine understanding the plot.

I would recommend this book to anyone who was looking for a good mystery/thriller. It had a good story

line, and it was not that hard to follow. I cannot wait for the movie to come out.

Hopefully, it is as good as the book.

Overall, if the movie is as good as the book, I think this will become even more popular.

Getting rid of anxiety and stress Mind Jar leads to success Madison Walther The Freedom Forum

Summer has unfortunately come to an end, and that means school is officially here to stay.

When people hear the word school, they hear stress, anxiety, and very early mornings. Here is something easy to make and even easier to use.

There are many different names for this glittery project. Mind Jars, calm jars, or even glitter jars.

People use these “mind jars” to calm children down, to destress, or to help with school anxiety.

Basically how it works is that you shake it up and watch as the glitter slowly falls, letting yourself distress.

The things you will need for this project is a jar that can be sealed at

any time (mason jars are recommended). Next, you will need any type of clear glue, food coloring (however this is optional), and a lot of glitter!

Step one is to heat up water in either a pot or a tea kettle. While you do that, make sure that you are getting all your things together.

You will not need a lot of water because you will be filling the jar up with many other things.

Step two, if you want to use food coloring in the jar, put a drop of any color you want. If by the end, you decide that you want the color to be lighter, you can always pour out the liquid and replace it with more water.

If you do decide to dump some please keep in mind that the jar will be hot from the water.

Step three, the water should be everything together, so you can see boiling at this point. You then pour it what it is like when you shake it up. into the jar, keeping in mind that you Your masterpiece is now done, and only want it to go half way. This is you can get through your school year when you want to stir it so it does not successfully. all stay at the bottom.

Step four, is dumping the glue into the water. The more glue you dump in the slower it will take the glitter to reach the bottom. This might be good if you want to be relaxed.

Finally, step five is adding all the glitter you want. Be as creative as you feel.

When you decide that it is all done, get your All the materials needed for the project, as well as the stirring stick and mix finished product.

Do not expect much during “Suicide Squad” Why “Suicide Squad” is a waste of your money Bailey Navin Journalism Student

“Suicide Squad” is an action packed movie, and it was amped up to be some amazing masterpiece of comic galore. However, it just ended up being a classic movie with a predictable ending.

The movie was a spin-off of a group of villains who fight crime in Gotham

City. The group included Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), The Joker (Jared Leto), Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Killer Croc (Adewale Agbaje), Diablo (Jay Hernandez), and Enchantress (Cara Delevingne). The group was battling one character the entire time with no other battles occurring.

If you go to see this movie hoping for lots of Joker scenes or multiple battles in one movie, you will be seriously let down. The Joker had a total of about 5 scenes in the entire movie, yet he was shown to have such a bigger part in the trailers. The movie had a very cliché ending with hardly any big surprises. The movie ended with a cliffhanger. The movie was given good and bad reviews

“The movie was awful. It seemed like they rushed everything, they romanticized Harley’s abuse,” said Veray Darby, senior.

On the other hand, the movie did have some positive feedback and some good parts throughout.

One of the biggest positives of the movie was Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn. She did almost all of her own stunts, and you could really tell she loved the character. Like most movies,the this one was a big hit the first week it came out. Another positive part of the movie was the soundtrack included throughout and during the credits. The movie did have good parts and was not a complete ruin.

“I mainly liked it because of the plot and the costumes,” said Alexandria Jimenez, freshman.

The love story between the Joker and Harley Quinn was a big focus in the movie. There was plenty of scenes with just them two, which hinted like there was gonna be a separate story of them too.

The movie ended with you confused and wanting a lot more.

To me, it felt like the movie was sent to the editing box and shipped right out without any last runthroughs. To be completely honest, do not waste your money. This movie will be a pretty big disappointment with no big surprises, cut scenes, and little to no Joker scenes. The only interesting parts were Margot Robbie’s acting, the soundtrack, and Jared Leto’s method acting.

Did you know Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson went to Freedom High School?

Dwayne Johnson, a 40-year-old movie star and former WWE

champion, also happens to be a Class of 1990 Freedom High School graduate.

Before ‘The Rock’ became famous, he was just a normal kid getting into trouble in high school.

He was considered a “punk,” and got into a lot of trouble.

However, he credits Freedom for changing his life for the better.

Johnson went to Freedom for about 2 and a half years, as he came during the middle of his sophomore year and went on to finish 2 more years and graduate from Freedom High School.

In a video of “LIVE with Kelly” on Lehigh Valley Live website, Johnson mentions Freedom High School and says that a teacher at Freedom helped him become a better person. Jody Cwik was that teacher.

They first met when Johnson used

the men’s faculty bathroom. Mr. Cwik walked in on Johnson washing his hands and got very upset with Johnson because he was in the wrong restroom. Being the person he was, Johnson walked out and brushed his shoulder on Mr. Cwik obnoxiously.

The next day, Johnson walked up to Mr. Cwik and stuck his hand out for an apology. Mr. Cwik reached out and grabbed it and said, “Would you like to be on the football team?”

Just by saying that, Johnson said that it changed his life forever, and he believes that he would not be where he is today without that handshake and that teacher.

Mr. William DeNofa, a Freedom social studies teacher, had Johnson in one of his classes.

Mr. DeNofa knew “The Rock” very well. He said Johnson was an “A/B” student.

“Don’t listen to the reports you read online. He never got in trouble as a student at Freedom,” said Mr. DeNofa.

According to Mr. DeNofa, the only time “The Rock” got in big trouble, was when a fellow student stole some gold chains and one of the chains was his. The Rock beat the boy up and got in trouble.

Johnson was big into wrestling and weightlifting as a high schooler but kept his time open for football.

“He had it all,” said Mr. DeNofa.

Johnson had many scholarships to colleges for football.

“It’s amazing. All in all, he’s remained humble,” said Mr. DeNofa.

“I knew he would be a successful wrestler one day, and he’s now so much more than that.”

In the 2016-2017 school year, former JV coach Breanna Timochenko, who students might know better as Ms. Hahn, has taken over as the new varsity head coach for the girls field hockey team.

The team is in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, Steel Division classified as 3A. The team looks to build off last year’s success, as they made it to the District 11 playoffs where their season ended in a crushing 2-1 loss to Liberty. “Many girls have improved tremendously since the last season.

We have been working hard on new plays and building on some of our old stuff,” said Banas, senior.

“The rest of the team and I are very excited to see how this season ends."
