2018 was a great year for video game lovers. There have been new releases, updates and adventures. These five games have each sold millions of copies and made an extraordinary amount of money. From superhero adventures to becoming a spartan warrior, all of these games have something special to offer (Content by Sydney Ellison)

Red Dead Redemption 2

The release for this game was highly anticipated, partly because of the success of its predecessor, Red Dead Redemption. Sales neared $725 million on opening weekend and furthermore, it sold over 17 million copies in its first two weeks. The game is a prequel to Red Dead Redemption and this time around follows a different gang member, Arthur Morgan, as he navigates western themed adventures.

Marvel’s Spiderman

Despite the disappointing sales of the last Spiderman video game, which got a score of 66/100 from Metacritic, Marvel’s Spiderman was able to excite players and the game flew off the shelves.

Released on Sept. 7, around 3.3 million copies were sold by the end of 2018. Players can experience many of Spiderman’s adventures through this beautifully designed game.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

There are many Call of Duty games, so it can be hard to keep track of all of them. That said, this game certainly made its mark by making $500 million in its first three days. Black Ops 4 has new characters, new adventures and an exciting new mode called Blackout, which is a battle royale type of mode.

“I like Call of Duty because it’s fun, and I like shooting the heads off of zombies, which I can’t do in real life.”

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Released on Dec. 7, this game made dreams come true by having an epic crossover between many different franchises. Some of the most well known characters are, Pikachu, Mario, Donkey Kong and Yoshi. The game can only be played on the Nintendo Switch but it does have both single-player and multiplayer capabilities.

“It’s a game that is always fun and exciting to play, especially with friends. I’ve even used it as a team bonding tool for my Boy Scout patrol.”

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey

You can become an ancient Greek warrior with the release of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. It quickly became a popular game as soon as it hit stores on Oct. 5, 2018. In its first week over 45,00 copies were sold. The game is the 20th Assassins Creed and takes place in Greece, 431 BCE. “It’s fun and it’s got good graphics but there’s been better Assassin’s Creeds.”

CREATORS CAUSING CONTROVERSY Ranging from smaller to bigger channels, beauty, gaming and comedic YouTubers caused altercations, shaking up the YouTube community

TanaCon, June:

Laura Lee, August: Back in 2013, Beauty Community YouTuber Laura Lee put her career on the line because of two racist comments she made on Twitter. She also posted several fat-shaming tweets around the same time. The comments resurfaced back in August of 2018. Many fans were outraged, and it became a trending topic. Soon, YouTube drama channels and social medias, like Messi Monday, began to cover it.

Because of the backlash received, she deleted the tweets. At the time, because of the situation, half a million of a her subscribers unsubscribed from her channel in just a week and a half.

When YouTuber Tana Mongeau had a falling out with the CEO of VidCon, an internet personality convention, she decided she wanted to plan her own convention. Mongeau took a month to plan with a company called Good Times, and rushed through the planning. The day of, there were thousands of fans outside of the building waiting to get inside because of a capacity issue. Because of the miscommunication, the day resulted in multiple people passing out from the heat outside, second degree sunburns and many angry fans and creators.

YouTuber Shane Dawson made an unbiased series on YouTube digging into what really happened at TanaCon. He met with Mongeau’s fans, Mongeau herself and the head of the company she worked with, Michael Weiss. While the series didn’t solve the problem completely, it gave fans insight on what really happened. All attendees got refunds from Good Times until Jan. 5, 2019.

That same week, she posted a four-minute apology video of her crying, talking about how she disappointed her fans. That video is currently gone, but she still continues uploading beauty videos on YouTube. Many people on Twitter believed her crying was fake because of the editing. There were many jump cuts in the video, and it discredited her sincerity.

“I think that she should have been honest and truly apologized instead of pretending.”

BetterHelp, October:

The Mind of Jake Paul, September: The eight-part docu-series about influencer Jake Paul, made by YouTuber Shane Dawson, caused a two-weeklong commotion. Many fans of Dawson were mad that he was covering Paul in his series because he has been accused of abusing his coworkers and ex-girlfriend Erika Costello. In the docu-series, Dawson also played into the thought that Paul was a manipulator. In the end, some fans believed that Dawson didn’t cover the series right because of how he threw around the term “sociopath.”

What came of it:

Since the docu-series caused so much controversy on social media, Dawson came out with a series of tweets explaining how he was going to take a break from filming after everything died down. Paul wasn’t offended and they’re currently on good terms with each other, but Dawson did lose some fans because of the whole situation.

Many creators whose videos get sponsored, usually take a few minutes to promote the company sponsoring them. During the last months of 2018, some YouTubers promoted an app called BetterHelp. While promoting, some influencers stated that BetterHelp offers professional help. At some point, there was a miscommunication because the app’s terms and conditions say otherwise. It states, “We do not determine whether any counselor is qualified to provide any specific service as well as whether a counselor is categorized correctly or matched correctly to you.” Both viewers and influencers were mad the falsely explained app was being promoted.

What came of it:

The creator of the app went to social media, defending BetterHelp. He referred people to their directory for more information about the credentials and licensing. Now, most creators do not work with the company, and viewers don’t want anything to do with YouTubers who have BetterHelp as a sponsor.

Defy Media, a company known for channels SMOSH and Clevver released that they stopped running. This resulted in having to lay off all of their employees, leaving the YouTube companies with no source of income.

Music company T-Series is at heads with gamer PewDiePie for subscriber count. PewDiePie has been the number one subscribed YouTuber since 2013, and is constantly making videos to oppose T-Series.

A family channel was taken down after authorities found a father and stepmother were abusing their children through pranks. After the biological mom was granted emergency custody, they were on probation.

Vloggers Cole and Sav LaBrant posted a fake video evacuating their home from wildfires in California. Their house is only 15 miles from the site of the fire, so there was never any evacuation order for their area.

YouTube Rewind has been around for years, and in 2018, it was pronounced the most disliked video that exists. Many people were mad and claimed that YouTube made the rewind for advertisers and not fans.

The remake of The Lion King is set to release on July 19, 25 years after the original film. The film’s cast has many famous faces including Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Donald Glover as Simba and Beyoncé as Nala.

The Lion King will be the live action retelling of Simba’s journey to become king after exiling himself after his father’s death. Hans Zimmer, who wrote the music for the 1994 film, is returning to write the music for the live action film.

Toy Story 4 is set to release on June 21, almost exactly nine years after the release of Toy Story 3. The film was first announced in 2014 with the original release date being 2017, until it was pushed back twice due to production issues. Many of the original toys are making a return, with the introduction of Forky, a fork like toy, and all the toys together on a road trip to show them how big the world can be for toys.

Dumbo

Dumbo is set to release on March 29. Dumbo will be a live action recreation of the original 1941 film, which had estimated home video sales of $90,592,856. The film features Dumbo, an elephant capable of flying with his big ears, in his adventures with a struggling circus. This live action remake is being (Source: Disney) directed by Tim Burton.

Development for this live action film was announced back on July 8, 2014.

Aladdin

Aladdin is set to release on May 24. Aladdin will be a live retelling of the original 1992 film, which made $504,050,219 worldwide. The story features Aladdin and the genie on an adventure to marry Princess Jasmine.

The cast features Will Smith as the genie, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine and Mena Massoud as Aladdin.

The sequel to The Lego Movie is set to release on Feb. 8. The original Lego Movie was released back in 2014, which had a worldwide box office performance of $469,000,000. It is about Duplo monsters from outer space destroying the Lego world faster than they can rebuild it.

THE AFTER EFFECTS OF THE 2018 GUN CONTROL MOVEMENT(Content by Rebekah Myers)

2018 was a big year for gun violence in the media. After the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, there were televised marches across the country dedicated to making the country a safer place from gun violence. The March for Our Lives in Washington D.C. was student led and had over a million participants across the country, making it seem like a major turning point in the fight for stronger gun laws. Since then, there has been an overall 7 percent increase of people wanting stricter gun laws. Some states have gained more laws since the marches and some have stood strong in their beliefs. Eleven months later, here is a full review of 2018’s gun-related crimes and of Missouri’s firearm laws to see if gun violence is getting better or worse.

STUCO PREPARES FOR DRAMA STUDENTS WINTER ENERGIZER ATTEND CONFERENCE FHN StuCo students who attended the Summer Leadership Workshop are invited to attend the Winter Energizer workshop in the Lake of the Ozarks on Jan. 19 to 21 to get StuCo members excited for second semester by practicing leadership skills and sharing ideas.

“We had a lot of fun at the summer workshop and that was in the heat,” StuCo member Coong Tran said. “I can’t wait to see what comes from the winter one.”

The Winter Energizer is a workshop for students to work on improving their leadership skills, rejuvenate their spirits after finals and get them excited for the upcoming semester. Students will obtain this by working in groups to bounce ideas off each other and by improving personal skills.

“Winter Energizer is a chance for high school students who attended our Summer Workshop to reconnect, re-energize and learn new skills,”

Executive Director Terri Johnson said.

“Everyone gets the winter doldrums, but attending Energizer helps you get through the second semester.”

The theme for the Energizer is PEAK Leadership, which is the style of teaching they are going to be focusing on. PEAK Leadership is when a person learns leadership through selfimprovement and group work.

“I heard it was a really fun event,” Tran said. “It’s new and enjoyable.”

The Winter Energizer is hosted by a group of nationally recognized student council advisors in Missouri known as Missouri Association of Student Councils “Our attendees find a renewed spirit and the energy to keep plugging away,” Johnson said. “[The Winter] Energizer is not only fun, it helps our students take a deeper look at their leadership skills and how they can use them to make a difference in their schools.”

The Missouri State Thespian Conference took place from Jan. 9 to 12 this year. It was hosted in Kansas City at the Marriott Downtown Hotel.

ThesCon is an annual conference for students involved in drama programs to hone their skills and compete for awards.

“ThesCon offers experiences we can’t teach,” Drama teacher Kim Sulzner said. “It’s invaluable.”

40 students from FHN attended ThesCon this year. They picked workshops to attend that mattered to them and their jobs specifically, they met with professionals in the theater industry and a college fair was held for the students.

“It gives you insight into what really happens in the theater world outside of school,” junior Della Boenitz said.

“It’s helpful.”

Each year the students compete in tech challenge. It has five events that involve behind-the-scenes skills, such as costume changes. Scores have been posted to FHNtoday’s social media.

In past years, FHN has been close to winning the challenge: they have often won one category. Going into this year’s convention, Sulzner has the same goal for her students: push themselves to do the best they can.

“Tech challenge showcases the drama students that don’t just do acting, Sulzner said. “A lot of what it is, is just real life skills.”

According to Sulzner, Thescon offers learning experiences that benefit students and drama teachers alike.

“There’s something for everyone,” Boenitz said. “Whether you’re comfortable behind the scenes or on stage, there’s a place for you.” (Brief by Ashlynn Perez)

WINTER GUARD STARTS STRONG FHN’s Winter Guard will be heading to Mascoutah High School in Illinois to compete in their first competition of the season on Jan. 26. This will be the competitive debut for the JV and middle school teams, which are new this year. With the addition of two new groups, Winter Guard will be competing with 50 other schools in various skill divisions.

“I think [Winter Guard] has a lot more potential this year,” Candace Siem, junior and varsity winter guard member, said. “Everyone has a really good mindset towards it, and we’ve already gotten a lot more done than we did this time last year.”

The JV team is off to a promising start, despite growing pains caused by adjusting to their new status.

“The JV team has been having some challenges learning how to work together, but other than that the skill is definitely there,” Head Coach John Miller said. “They’re just learning how to be a team right now.”

With their struggles, the novice team has still achieved consistent results.

At this rate of improvement, they are expected to be in good shape come the middle of January.

“Most of JV is new people.” freshman Morgan Statzer said. “We all have our own things that we’re good at but we have to figure out how to weave it all together to make a good show and make something amazing.”

Their determination to impress and advance keeps the team morale up and a positive outlook for the season.

“The coaches expect us to do very well, placing every competition because of our work ethic and how much we want to be good, and that initiative to push ourselves,” sophomore Maddy Brewer said. “John has a very high standard for us, we want to prove to him that we’re good.

REEVALUATING THE HAT POLICY

Administration has decided to adapt a more tolerant hat policy at FHN. For a probationary period, student’s will be allowed to wear hats in the common areas of the school, and in classrooms at the teachers discretion. The change is following a survey done within the faculty where 79 percent of teachers elected to allow students to wear hats. A cabinet of student leaders, who represent eight different clubs, was also consulted to gain a students perspective on the issue.

While the question of “Why can’t we wear hats in school?” has been one on the mind of students for years, the driving force behind this change for the student representatives is that a change could increase the sense of community at FHN. “Most of the reason students wear hats is because of illness or religious clothing,” FHN United Representative

Dillon Lauer said. “If those students are allowed to wear it, then it’s more exclusive, instead of all students wearing hats then it would be inclusive and students would all be together.”

Despite the support behind the previous hat policy being removed, some faculty members still hold doubts.

“The only concerns I have are that hats and hoods can obscure faces from cameras,” Science teacher Chris Dalton said. “It also begs the question “What else is going to start changing?”.

There are no plans to change the policy on students having their hoods up. And within their own classrooms, teachers will have control over when students are permitted to wear hats.

“I plan on having no hats in my classroom while they’re seated, but while students are in the hallway I couldn’t care less,” Dalton said. “I guess we’ll just have to see how this goes.” (Brief by Sophie Carite)

According to the report, in order to avoid the worst effect of climate change, the world economy would have to transform at a speed and scale faster and larger than ever before.

Broadly explained, everyone’s way of life will have to change drastically in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the needed amount. Matter-offactly, greenhouse gas pollution needs to be reduced by 45 percent in just 12 years from now — and 100 percent by 2050 or the negative effects of climate change could be irreversible. Across the country, heat waves are expected to get more intense and cold waves less intense. In the Midwest, it will be specifically due to the reduction of soil moisture which increases the severity of heat waves. According to a study done by NASA, “by the end of this century, what have been once-in-20year extreme heat days (one-day events) are projected to occur every two or three years over most of the nation.”

Sea levels have risen about eight inches since 1880 caused by melting land ice and the expansion of water as it warms. These levels are expected to increase 1 to 4 feet by 2100. We are already seeing these effects today, so continuation will only cause harsher problems. FHSD Takes over busing The district is going to start controlling its own school transportation in district for the benefit of students

In 2019, the FHSD is currently reviewing the busing system. While they’re looking to change it by possibly renting or buying new buses, the Board of Education is still undecided on what they want to do. The decision they make could affect the students and atheletes at FHN. “We currently have a contract signed with First Student,” District Superintendent Mary HendricksHarris said. “It will be expiring soon, so instead of paying the same cost to have them continue, we devised an alternative method where we handle transportation within the district.”

FHSD’s current bus transportation system is very different than the new system the district is adopting.

The new system wouldn’t be contracted by outside companies that have buses and bus drivers, such as First Student. Instead, FHSD may hire bus drivers, and perhaps buy buses themselves if decided, through a new department. It’s headed currently by, the district’s Jennifer Simpson the Director of Transportation. During the first months of the transfer, they are expecting fall-backs and late buses or mistakes in bus routes. The cost is undetermined as of now, until then, the district will decide whether to buy buses or rent them. Sports busing may also be an extra cost because as of now, it will cost more than what it does when included in the current contract.

This will determine whether extracurricular busing is offered in the future.

For sophomore Timmy Enea, making goals is the center of his whole life, following his father’s path, John Enea, who played in a professional league for the Romanian team, Steaua. Soccer has always been a big part of their family.

“My dad is a good player, but I want to be better than him and that drives me to work harder,” Enea said.

Growing up in Bulgaria and Greece until he was about 10, trained him to be competitive and work extra hard in the game of soccer. After living in Greece, he moved to the States because his mom wanted to be closer to her family. The transition was an adjustment, but as long as Enea could be on a soccer team it didn’t matter where he was living.

“Growing up I wanted to play soccer myself, my parents don’t force it upon me,” Enea said. “When I moved to Missouri it was a lot different. In Greece, it was more competitive and during the summers I was on a youth league and we would play the best of other teams in our age group from other countries. It was intense and a lot of work.”

Enea’s parents never pressured him to play, they let him pick for himself if it was a sport he would enjoy playing. After finding out soccer was indeed his passion, his parents support him every step of the way.

His dad scrimmages with him when he visits, helping Timmy work on his skills. His mother, Evi Nadnevha, watches him play whenever she gets the chance and cheers him on.

“I get excited when I watch him play,” Nadnevha said. “The games I miss I get to watch on Youtube so I never miss any of Timmy’s moments. But when he is playing and makes a goal I get so excited, and I’m from Europe and we aren’t so quiet at games an he always tells me to not be so loud, but I just love cheering for him.”

As Enea adjusted to his new FHN soccer team he found new friends and relationships he didn’t have before. The team dynamic was very friendly and supportive and became another main reason Enea continued to love soccer. Although this season wasn’t as good as the team had hoped it would be due to not as high of a winning record as planned, the team put in effort this season in hopes of a better season next year. Enea added to the effort this year by scoring four goals this season.

“He is always positive on the field even in the worst situations,” teammate sophomore Peter Moxley said.

stepdad was reassigned to Las Vegas, which means that the family gathered up their things and moved back to the U.S. While she was only there for two school years, the difference between Vegas and Japan was staggering.

“It was drastically different than Japan,” Jada said. “There’s a reason why it’s called Sin City, let’s just be real. Outside of the negative aspects of Vegas, there were some cool parts. Vegas schools are primarily black and Hispanic, so I think in one respect that’s really interesting. There was a lot of opportunities.

The community really tried to reach out to these kids because they live in this place that’s not really a place that you want to bring up a family.

The community tries to do a lot to balance that out and make good opportunities.”

Before her senior year, her stepdad was deployed to a base in Qatar. Because it was an active deployment, his family couldn’t go with him. That was when her mom decided to head back to St. Charles.

“At first it was really weird,’ Jada said. ‘People were like ‘Oh, you’re moving back to Missouri.

You’ll know people.’ Okay, I know them, but it’s been six years. Some people are like ‘Oh my gosh, you’re back!’ and some people are like ‘I recognize you, don’t I?’ And some people still don’t recognize me. Everybody has changed, everyone has moved on. I didn’t even prepare for how weird it was going to be, but I don’t think you can prepare for that.”

As far as her future, Jada isn’t so sure. But she knows that no matter where she moves, it’s just a matter of finding where she fits in.

“I thought about these hypothetical situations like, ‘What if I end up going back to St. Charles?’”

Jada said. “I thought it was probably never going to happen and now here I am. At first, I was like ‘As soon as I graduate, I’m getting out of [St. Charles] and I’m not coming back,’ but I think what makes it different for me is that since I’ve lived in all of these places, I can appreciate what’s here more than I was before. Before, I didn’t really want to be here but now I don’t really mind it. I was going to stay [in Vegas], but now that I’m here and comfortable again, I don’t have a problem with staying here. That’s definitely a benefit of being moved around like that, you get adjusted really quickly.”

PUTTING ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER Senior Aylin Pintor suffered paralysis following a car accident and has spent the time since recovering

S

he was taken to Saint Louis Children’s Hospital following the accident for treatment. After arriving and receiving a handful of X-rays, it seemed like every doctor in the building was swarming around senior Aylin Pintor, removing her clothes and prepping her for surgery.

Pintor was involved in a two car collision on Jan. 22, 2018, that left her paralyzed from the waist down.

Since the day of the accident, it has been affecting all aspects of her life.

Including months of physical therapy, chronic pain, and a shift in lifestyle that continues to the current day.

While waiting to go into surgery, Pintor watched and listened as doctors told her parent’s that she may never be able to walk again. This news made Pintor realize that her injuries would be adding on to the stress in her parents lives.

“I felt like I had disappointed them in a way,” Pintor said.

Following her operation, Pintor found that she had broken every vertebrae in her spine from the thoracic region to the lumbar, nearly half her back. Finding out that she would have to learn to walk again was devastating news for Pintor. It was almost as painful as the near constant “pins and needles” pain that plagued her from the waist down. Because of her condition, Pintor was on an IV drip of Morphine, Oxycontin, and a cycle of high-dosage Tylenol every four hours.

Though Pintor hated that she was dependent on medication to stop her pain and was frustrated that her body hadn’t become used to living with it yet, she would administer the highest possible dosage of Morphine to herself

through a button attached to an IV until she hit the limit.

“It made my body cool off,” Pintor said. “I didn’t feel any pain, and that’s what I liked about it. But it got to a point where doctors were watching to make sure I didn’t get addicted to it.”

Seeing Pintor attached to an IV along with other monitors and tubes was a jarring sight for friends and family. Particularly her friend, senior Ivon Diaz.

“Walking into the room and seeing everything she was hooked up to and how she wasn’t herself was kind of heartbreaking for me,” Diaz said.

Pintor spent nearly three weeks in the hospital directly following the accident.

In this time, she awoke everyday between 6 and 7 a.m. for doctors to check on her condition and discuss further treatment. This was followed by physical and occupational therapy for a handful of hours before she had to do laps around the hallways. For Pintor, physical therapy was

ST. CHARLES ANTIQUE MALL HOLDS HISTORY Hidden behind N St. Peters Parkway, the St. Charles Antique Mall carries many stories.

From the various pieces of furniture, to brightly colored powder boxes from the late 1800s, there’s something for everyone. Whether a project, family heirloom or DIY, sales associate Brenda Fore believes it is in the antique mall.

“Working here is really interesting,” Fore said.

“I like coming in here, finding new items and learning about their history or what they were used for. Sometimes the customers and dealers will know more than me, and I love to learn from them.”

The antique mall is set up to where various, individual businesses will buy a section in the mall and put whatever they want to sell from their store there.

There are three separate galleries, a hallwaylike annex and two smaller rooms all filled with antiques laying out or in glass cases, which comes to a total of more than 36,000 square feet. According to manager Connie Thomas, customers don’t realize how much space the mall actually takes up. Although the lot may appear small, there are actually over 200 spots for businesses to rent a section and sell their products.

“People have a false impression when they come in here,” Thomas said. “It’s constantly changing. You could buy anything in here.”

There are trinkets and objects from all over the world displayed in the mall. Ranging from Poland, Germany, England, South America and Mexico, there are antiques that were made anywhere from the 1800s to the 2010s.

“This mall is a place to find unique things,” customer Bonnie Bee said. “It makes you come back. I’ll find cool things and leave them here just to come back and find them again.” (Story by Sammie Herr)

Living through loss Sophomore AZ Anderson has gone through a lot in his life but he doesn’t let it have a negative impact on himself

I

t’s 2010 and “Good Life” by Kanye West plays while AZ Anderson and his family dance around their house.

It’s game night.

They’ve been playing games like charades and hide and seek for hours. For that family, it seemed like nothing else in the world mattered.

“We would all be laughing and having fun and dancing,” AZ said. “My dad was like a big little kid.”

On Sept. 15 of that year, when AZ was just 7 years old, all that changed. That day, he was picked up by his aunt Shea Tatum from school and taken to the hospital where his mother waited to tell him and his siblings what happened. It was that day

that his father passed away from heart and kidney complications.

“She basically said, ‘It’s going to be hard’,” AZ said. “I saw the tears coming down her eyes and I was asking myself, ‘Why is my mom crying?’ My mom was such a strong woman. I never saw her cry.

“She said that we needed to take everything day by day, and it’s one of those things I hold with me to this day; it’s so vivid in my memory. Every time I say that, I can feel my mother’s touch on my knee because it was such a firm grip.

“I know that she was just trying to reassure us, but I knew it was going to be hard. It was hard.”

When AZ first went into the hospital room, he didn’t want to believe that his father was actually gone. He thought that maybe his father was just playing a huge prank on him and that it wasn’t true. At the time, he

didn’t really have a grasp on the concept of death, and he didn’t take much time to grieve because he returned to school soon after.

“I didn’t know I was depressed because I was seven-year-old, and I didn’t really know how to interpret it,” AZ said. “I really only took a day off of school, and all I know is that every time my teacher would give me an assignment, I would just color it black. She took that as an act of defiance. She didn’t know how to interpret it and so I ended up getting kicked out of her class which sucked a lot because I didn’t even know what was happening.”

Over time, AZ’s understanding of death increased and he started to return to his normal self.

Packing Up In the six months that followed, family and friends were helping AZ and his mother a lot. His mother was

a stay-at-home mom before his father passed, so they were struggling. After those six months, the people that were helping them out started to fade out, and their family was on their own. Eventually, they had to move out of the house and into an apartment.

“When we first moved to the apartment, I met some really good friends,” AZ said. “They’re people that I talk to even to this day, and I think that’s just God because even through this tough time, I still have people I can depend on.”

AZ and his family moved from place to place for the next few years. After a brief stay in the apartment, they moved in with his aunt. While AZ and his family were living with her, his mother went back to school to be able to become a teacher. Soon after, his mother got a teaching job. Kids from the school his mother taught at would come to the house for counseling. It didn’t matter what happened, AZ’s mother was always there and ready to help.

Finally, after about two years, AZ and his family moved out of their aunt’s house and into another apartment. That Easter, AZ’s mom organized an Easter egg hunt for the kids that couldn’t afford it.

For Christmas, even though they didn’t have much money, she tried to provide for the kids in the neighborhood.

“My mom sewed so many seeds,” AZ said. “That’s why I’m probably not going to have to worry because of all those seeds. I’m really glad she instilled that into me. To just give no matter what, even if you don’t have.”

After their time at that apartment, they moved into a house.

For the first time since the passing of AZ’s father, they had a house. AZ and his family were finally content. He held the memories he created with his family in that house close to his heart. “[Living in the house] was really the turning point,” AZ said. “Everything we went through since my dad died. Everything was restored to how it was before.

Before, yeah, I had a lot, but then I lost it all, but I got even more in return. A lot of times we look at life and we think about materials, but it’s really not about that because once you die, the materials are gone and it’s just your legacy and what you’ve built. You’re not going to be remembered for money, you’re going to be remembered for what you do. I still hold that.”

It wasn’t the last turning point for AZ though.

It was the night of Jan. 5, 2017, and AZ was up late playing video games. Normally, his mother would come in his room to tell him to sleep or quiet down.

AZ thought it was odd that she didn’t come in, but he continued playing until he eventually went to sleep.

Later that night, AZ woke up to screams.

AZ went into his mother’s room and found his brother, sister and his mother’s coworkers all in there.

His brother started shaking her, begging her to wake up.

It was then that AZ realized that his mother had passed.

“I was so sad but I couldn’t cry,” AZ said. “I thought ‘Well, I really have to succeed now.’ I don’t know, it was instant. It was a call of action when my mom died. It wasn’t just, ‘Dang, she died.’ You think ‘Oh that’s your mother, that’s a strong effect,’ and it did have a strong effect on me. But it was more like, ‘I’m prepared for this.’ She taught us to be very

independent. She’s built me up for this. I can do this.”

Once everyone calmed down a bit, her coworkers called an ambulance while AZ and his brother started calling family members to tell them the news.

“I remember seeing so many people crying,” AZ said. “It wasn’t chaotic to me but everyone was crying. Everybody was sad, and when you’re surrounded by that kind of sadness, it’s just crazy.”

In the months following his mother’s passing, he stayed with his grandmother on his mother’s side and people were checking in on him constantly. Some people he knew and some he didn’t were checking on him to make sure he was doing ok. According to AZ, his quality of life improved because he had such a strong network of people to help him out during this time.

A Choice to Make Now, AZ had to make a decision. He could stay in Houston with family from his father’s side, or he could move in with Latashua Browning, his aunt on his mother’s side in Missouri. “[My grandma] basically sat us down and said that she respected our decision no matter what we chose,” AZ said. “She thought that it might be more beneficial for us to come to Missouri, but in the end, she didn’t force us into anything.”

In the end, AZ decided to come to Missouri to live with his aunt and grandma. He felt that they were more equipped to take care of him and provide a strong support system for AZ and his sister Christian.

“It’s a blessing to be able to support AZ and Christian,” Browning said. ”It’s an honor to be able to continue the legacy of their mom and dad and to help them be successful and continue their goals.”

Despite all the experiences AZ has had at such a young age, he keeps a positive outlook on life.

He feels like through everything, he’s changed for the better.

“I look at situations differently,” AZ said. “I go into a situation without any prejudice or bias. I don’t care regardless of your race and background.

Because I went through so much, I realized that we’re all so different that it’s crazy. We’re united by our differences.”

Since moving to Missouri, AZ thinks that things have been going really well for him. He feels that when it comes to FHN, there’s not a lot he can complain about.

“I expected something totally different,” AZ said.

“Everyone here is so nice. The “Be Nice” things really make a difference. Those simple things and those simple values really make a difference. It’s hard to complain about a school that’s so well rounded.”

In the future, AZ plans on going to law school to become a lawyer. He wants to help kids that are in situations similar to he was to make sure they are getting properly represented.

“I really just want to be successful, go to college and be the best father to my kids that I can be,” AZ said.

“As a lawyer, I want to really connect with the kids and do a better job than my lawyers. I honestly just want to help people in any way I can.”

A Day in the life 26

20 years after becoming a paramedic, Jaclyn Kloecker was awarded with the 2018 CHEMS Paramedic of the Year award for the first time.

2018 marks the first time that Christian Hospital Emergency Medical Service (CHEMS) has given out an award for Paramedic of the Year. After 20 years of service, Jaclyn Kloecker took home the award.

“I was very surprised, I knew I was nominated, but I did not think I was going to win it,” Kloecker said.

The award is just a highlight in Kloecker’s long career. Although it’a a highlight, Kloecker cites her 13 baby deliveries as her biggest accomplishment.

“I help bring a life into this world and may be one day that child will help someone else,” Kloecker said.

As well as being a paramedic, Kloecker has also pursued the role of a community paramedic. For this she goes into a community member’s home for up to six months to learn about everything they need.

“I still like the 911 calls and fighting fire, but the community help I what I really like to do,” Kloecker said.

The paramedics arrive at 6am in the morning and serve a 24 hour shift.

Calls don’t normally start till 9am so they will often take a nap till then.

Kloecker and her partner wheel a patient into the emergency department Chritstian Hospital.

Christian and DePaul are the two main hospitals that Kloecker works with.

The pair aren’t at the hospital long as they only drop of the patient, give their information, and sign over care.

Kloecker unloads a stretcher from the rear of the ambulance.

The stretcher is the most commonly used equipment. The stretcher is a safe and secure way of being able to transport and work with patients in the moving ambulance.

Kloecker puts a blood pressure cuff on a patient. The patient called reporting a breathing difficulty caused by their COPD. The patient would later be rushed to the hospital after they stopped breathing.

They would later make a complete recovery.

Kloecker injects saline into a patients are through an IV. Saline solution is a simple mixture of water and salt. Paramedics use the solution to flush out an IV when put in. The IV is put in on the way to the hospital to save time for the doctors in the emergency room.

Doctors can hook a large assortment of drugs to the IV to get them into the patient’s system faster. Saline is also used to hydrate patients and to clean wounds.

Ambulance number 5117 lights a neighborhood street while first responders are inside.

Nights are the busiest time for paramedics.

They often go from 11pm to 5am with no breaks between calls.

How do you balance school with varsity softball, basketball and pole vault?

“Honestly, it’s really hard. With practicing every day and having some games that go late into the night, it gets pretty hard to keep doing homework every night but in the end it’s all worth it.”

What drives your passion with these sports?

“I’ve just always loved playing sports. My mom has always played sports so she’s always pushed me, and I just have so much fun playing them.”

How do these sports translate to one another?

“Most of them are team oriented. It’s all about building with your group even though pole vault is usually more personal, it’s still a team thing and we get a team ranking and your teammates really help push you and go to new heights.”

“They are all really supportive. My family especially loves that I play sports and loves to come watch.”

Is there a different mentality with each of the sports?

“Yes. In softball I feel like I have to be the leader, especially for my position [catcher], but in basketball, I kind of step back especially being an underclassman. I really just try to go with the flow and try to cheer on more. Pole vault is so relaxed and so fun, it’s kind of my off-season sport, but I just love it.”

Do you ever wish you weren’t playing some of these sports?

“Sometimes I have struggles loving basketball because I’ve played it for so long, and I think it’s more of an adjustment. But at the end of the day, I’m happy that I am playing.”

What are your goals for these sports when you reach your senior year?

“For softball, I probably want to be a captain and hitting number four or three. For basketball, I just want to be a team leader and keep improving. For pole vault, I am already the top girl jumper, so I just want to keep reaching new heights.”

The FHN girls’ basketball team consists of seven seniors, four sophomores, one freshman and one junior, Jenna Thompson. Being surrounded by athletes from all different grade levels is common for high school sports, but it isn’t typical for a varsity basketball team to have just one junior.

“It’s exciting because I’ll be the only senior next year,” Thompson said. “But it also adds some pressure, because that means I have to learn a lot this season about the varsity team and getting to know the varsity level of play.”

Thompson’s role within the team consists of many different things.

On the court she is a small forward, expected to excel in rebounding and finishing around the paint. On the sideline or bench, she focuses on bringing positive energy and cheering

With the girls’ basketball program’s seven graduating seniors, Thompson looks to adapt to the new level of play throughout this year to further excel and lead the team in her future senior season next year, especially with only having one senior to lead the team.

BASKETBALL HEADS DOWN A NEW ROAD The FHN varsity boys’ basketball team was in a slump the past few years. This year though, the team has the addition of some new players on the team like senior Josh Daughtery and freshman Dontrell Woods as well as a new assistant varsity coach Michael Schenck. They are hopeful they can turn things around for the season.

Schenck is entering his first year as a coach at FHN and is really excited to see what the team can do. After not being able to coach last season due to teaching at FHHS and them already being fully staffed in the basketball department, he is ready to get back to it and with a new school and new team, he’s excited to see what the team can do.

“Last year, I was at FHHS just teaching, but before that, I coached for four years at Parkway West,” said

Schenck. “I had to take last year off. I’m excited just to be back coaching again.

I’ve missed it a lot, and I’m excited to work with these guys for sure.”

Coach Darrell Davis, seven year head coach for the team, also talked about how he was excited to coach this group of guys. After going 4-20 last season he’s looking to hopefully turn it around and get the program back on track.

Coach Davis talked about how the teams biggest problem is rebounding.

Which will become a huge focus as the season goes on.

“We started off kind of slow this year.

We have only won one game this year and we’ve entered conference play so we want to have a winning record in the conference. We’re pushing them to play more as a team, especially in the final two months going into districts.”

PADDLING THROUGH LIFE Senior Sam Scherff is a competitive whitewater athlete, but his journey started with a kayak, his father and fun

With the guidance of his father and fellow kayakers from the MWA, Sam has become a more seasoned paddler. SUCCESS ON THE SLEDGE Three-time Paralympic gold-medalist Josh Pauls leaves an impact both on and off the ice

e looks around the room. Some guys are pulling off their legs.

Some guys are in wheelchairs.

All guys have different backgrounds.

For Josh Pauls though, he’s found his place. The place he really fits in.

Born without tibia bones, Josh Pauls had to have both legs amputated at 10 months old. Growing up, he spent years without a competitive activity, but after watching a sled hockey game is his hometown in Green Brook, N.J., Pauls knew he wanted to try it out, so he did. Though it took some convincing from his parents and support from his friends, Pauls joined a local sledge team in 2002 and found his fit.

“I didn’t have a competitive outlet that I was able to use, and then I was able to play sports and simply just compete,” Pauls said. “[Before then,] I didn’t really have that chance, so that was one of the biggest struggles.”

Quickly growing and showing lots of promise, Pauls was invited to attend a USA Hockey Development Camp in 2007 and then made the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team soon after in 2008.

“It’s kind of my life now,” Pauls said.

“I can’t imagine being around without [sled hockey] just because of how much it’s meant to me. What it’s done for me, it’s my life. I can’t imagine living without sled hockey. It doesn’t even compute for me.”

As sled hockey surrounded his life more and more, Pauls continued to move up the ranks, making the 2010 Paralympic Sled Team. This made him the youngest member on the team, at 17 years old, when the team won gold in Vancouver.

“They’re not alone. That’s probably been our biggest accomplishment in all the medals we’ve won to see so many more kids get involved.”

TIKTOK IS A NATIONAL TREASURE First, Social media app Musical.ly was acquired for $1 billion by Chinese company ByteDance in November 2017.

Second, ByteDance then fully released TikTok in 2018.

The third step for the communist Chinese government was simple: to corrupt American youth with the worst content imaginable and then usher in a new era of communism; however, they didn’t account for one thing: the Internet. China’s tool of global destruction backfired and instead of generating only “so bad it’s good” unironic content, produced ironic parodies and mockeries that were a highlight of the 2018.

TikTok resembles Music.ly. The formats are similar, audio samples could be placed over user created videos and most of the early content utilizing TikTok’s new features was genuine and unironic, but new features helped contribute to the rise of ironic TikTok content.

In November of 2018, the content of TikTok started to change. The addition of the “duet,” a TikTok feature that allows a split screen of two TikToks, allowed people to easily transform unironic content, into ironic content. Examples include the Living Tombstone’s “No Mercy,” Mia Khalifa’s “​iLOVEFRiDAY” and others.

In the example of “No Mercy,” unironic TikTok users typically placed themselves in the role of one of the singers choosing between characters in the video game Overwatch. These users made mistakes that proved they had never played Overwatch before. Ironic users capitalized on this and created videos either pointing out the mistakes or exaggerating them to ridiculous extents. These memes followed the classic joke format: a reference to the original work, a comedic twist on expectations and then a Fortnite dance.

They’re easily replicable and widespread; perfect meme material.

However, something must be addressed. In order for TikTok memes to be funny, they must not outweigh the unironic content on the app. It’s just physics. Every reaction needs to have an equal and opposite reaction. If there is only ironic content, all that the ironic content will be parodying is itself. As of 2018, that balance hasn’t be interrupted. CONCERTS: VENUES VERSUS STADIUMS Smaller concerts help to provide better experiences from how much they cost, the atmosphere and the connection you make with the artist

Live music is something that many people enjoy and participate in. Whether you are playing for a crowd or seeing your favorite band perform, where you are matters. Some places have a better stage, some places have a better space for an audience and some places have better sound than others.

But, should you pay money to see a show at a small venue or a large stadium?

When you go to a concert at a small venue or concert hall the tickets are usually much cheaper when prices are compared to a concert at a stadium or amphitheater. For example, there’s a concert at Pop’s Nightclub in East Saint Louis. General admission tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. At a similar concert at the Chaifetz Arena downtown by SLU, the tickets cost $50 to $200, depending on what section you buy your tickets in.

The price markup is due to the price of setting up the concert. Large concerts usually have big light shows, road crews and more speakers to fill the bigger area with sound and visuals. Concerts like the one at Chaifetz Arena also seat up to 10,600 people, whereas a place like Pop’s only seats 1,000 to 2,000 people, meaning the price for stocking concessions is also much higher.

The other major downside of bigger concerts that

doesn’t happen with smaller concerts is that you end up watching the whole concert through a screen. At concerts in stadiums, like the Enterprise Center or Busch Stadium, without spending a ton of money on tickets, you’re probably going to be sitting pretty far from the actual stage. Since you’re so far from the stage, the concert you paid money to see is going to be pretty hard to see, thus you’re going to be looking at the big screens that are spread throughout the stadium. At a smaller venue like The Pageant or Delmar Hall, you’re most likely not more than 200 to 500 ft. away from the stage at any given moment, so that’s not really a problem.

Some may argue that the light shows and the pyrotechnics at bigger concerts add an experience that you don’t usually experience at a smaller concert or make the concert that you’re seeing better. However, some concerts with over-the-top lighting and pyrotechnics can distract you from the actual concert and sometimes even hurt your eyes or make you sick. Overall, smaller concerts will not only get you a better experience for less money, but it will also let you be closer to many fans who are like you.

When you leave a concert you should be happy and you should feel closer to the artist. You should feel like you got exactly what you payed for. The only way to achieve those feelings is to go to a smaller, more personal concert.

like to imagine that newsrooms are like beehives.

Honey bees work together to achieve one thing: honey. All these talented minds and great ideas are all in one room, working on one thing: a newsmagazine. Journalists are running on adrenaline from an amazing story we’re writing, trying to get interviews scheduled, excited to get our story in on time. We all have one thing in common: we want to produce a polished paper that’s different from the rest and reaches all the standards of our editors and the public. The buzzing gets loud, the honey creates a sticky mess, but at the end of the day, we’re proud of what we make.

People are introduced early to competition. When we used to play checkers in kindergarten against our friends, we weren’t aware a good majority of our lives would feel like that board game. We used to race our friends for the position of line leader, not knowing we would feel out of breath when we got older. People everywhere are beating themselves up over getting second place or getting an 80 percent on their math test when the person sitting next to them got an 85 percent.

When thinking of honey bees in their hives, bees are hard workers, each bee is born knowing how to do two things: pollinate and make honey. When there aren’t enough flowers in a pollinated area, honey bees tend to oppose each other. Much like the honeybees, journalists have that competitive instinct as well. We all want to impress our editors. We all want to win a Pulitzer or a Quill and Scroll Gold Key. We all want to pollinate as many flowers as we can.

People get nervous, they get desperate, they might say or do things that are out of their character.

Competition can cause people to crack under the pressure. They can be hard on others and hard on themselves because they simply want to be their best selves that they can be and improve their work.

Competition isn’t something to fear or completely push away, though. I believe competition can push people to do their best. It helps people improve because they have this want to be better.

Honey bees work the best when they work together.

Rather than competing against each other other, we should be joining together. Honey bees would never make honey, newsrooms would never send off papers and nothing would reach it’s true potential without everyone working together. Creativity needs collaboration. Imagine what one talented person can

make. Now, imagine what 50 talented people can make when they all have their ideas under one roof. We could move mountains together.

We can never get rid of competition; that’s entirely impossible. I don’t think we should either. I think people need to remember that they are in their position for a reason. They are where they are at because they are good at what they do. I think people can forget that, and they want to be better at what other people are good at.

I’m not saying people should only stick to what they know, but rather than being better than that one person, I think we should all work on bettering ourselves.

It’s hard to ignore what others are doing. We see their successes; we want the same thing. Not only in the newsroom, but everywhere, I believe that rather than tearing others down or making sure your work is better than theirs, you should build yourself up and make sure your piece is greater than your last.

There is always room for improvement. I think people will be happier with themselves when they step back, let other people work and work on themselves. We shouldn’t try to be the best at something we don’t know how to do, we should be improving on what we are good at. We should Everyone is unique. Bees will be attracted to pink or blue flowers; it’s always better when they spread out and do something different. We all need to embrace our differences and talents. We all need to helo each other improve. Then, not only can we create a better newsroom, but a better society all together.

LET’S MAKE GREEN THE NEW NORM

We all know what we can do to protect the environment, but we still don’t constantly practice these positive habits On Behalf of the Editorial Staff

We have known this was an issue for a long time. Less than 12 years ago we were children sitting through elementary school lessons and assemblies aspiring to instill green habits into kids that weren’t even ten-years-old yet.

We know the three R’s —reduce, reuse and recycle. We watched PSAs brought to us from Sesame Street, Bob the Builder and Disney Channel. Still, at the end of last year, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) projected that pollution from greenhouse gasses needs to be reduced by 45 percent in just 12 short years. What happened to those childhood lessons?

The IPCC special report approximates that

1.0 degree Celsius of global warming since the Industrial Revolution results from human activity. We know what to do to stop things from getting worse. We just aren’t choosing doing them.

So why don’t we?

Students are the future of this planet. By 2050 —the year greenhouse gas emissions need to be cut down to 100 percent to avoid global warming’s effects becoming irreversible— we’ll still have much of our lives left to live. It’s a matter of our lives, our planet’s future and the condition of our home. It’s leaving the Earth better than we found it.

That change has to start now, with individual people before we can expect the Green Revolution this planet needs.
