Sie dienen als Inspirationsquelle für moderne Unterhaltungsmedien und erfreuen sich großer Beliebtheit in Romanen, Filmen und Videospielen. Die Artenvielfalt der Wesen ist überwältigend und nur schwer zu erfassen. Zudem wurden ihre Eigenarten allmählich durch verschiedene kulturelle und religiöse Einflüsse verfremdet.
Although the Scandinavian folk tales of trolls, elves and other supernatural creatures are hundreds of years old, the attention towards them has never faded. They serve as inspiration for modern entertainment media and enjoy great popularity in novels, movies and video games. The diversity of the mythological creatures is overwhelming and difficult to outline. Furthermore, over time, their characteristics have been significantly distorted by the influence of foreign cultures and religions.
Dieses Buch schafft Klarheit über ihre ursprüngliche Wesensart und hilft Missverständnisse aufzuklären. Es sammelt die wichtigsten skandinavischen Fabelwesen, erklärt ihre Charakteristik und veranschaulicht sie mit modernen Illustrationen. Somit dient es als praktisches Nachschlagewerk und als Inspirationsquelle für moderne Neuinterpretationen der Kreaturen.
This thesis explains their original essence and helps to clarify misunderstandings. It shows a collection of the most important Scandinavian mythical creatures, explains their origins and special traits and visualizes them with the help of modern illustration techniques. It serves the purpose of a reference book and source of inspiration for modern reinterpretations of the creatures.
