MAYOR’S YOUTH COUNCIL

COMMUNITY SERVICES

GENERAL INFO

Overview: The Fountain Hills Mayor’s Youth Council is a group of high school students dedicated to learning about how local and state government bodies run as well as serving the community through volunteerism. Council members learn about leadership and the skills that they can learn to become leaders. What do we do? Council members share their perspective on youth issues by serving as liaisons to the Mayor, Town Council, and peers, as well as provide a variety of community service projects, including cleaning their own assigned street through the Adopt-a-Street program. Members also learn about the services provided by other organizations such as Rural Metro Fire Department, Maricopa County Sheriffs’ Office, local historians, artists and the Parks division. An overnight retreat, special dinners and social gatherings provide fun, too! How? Members meet twice monthly and accomplish their mission through volunteerism and civic education and participation as well as an annual field trip to the State Capitol while the Legislature is in session. They also provide leadership on Make a Difference Day, serve as a listening board to the youth in the community and provide the Mayor information from their perspective, promote a sense of civic involvement and community pride, and become positive role models through responsible leadership. Interested in becoming a member? Please contact Town Hall, and ask for the MYC Staff Advisor, (480) 816-5100.

Although yoga can improve flexibility and muscular strength, it can also cause compensation, compression, and even pain when done incorrectly. How do you go deeper in your practice and become more grounded and centered while reducing the risk of injury? MELT is a simple self-treatment technique that works by rebalancing your nervous system and rehydrating your connective tissue, which is all around your muscles and joints. Learn how treating this tissue can improve your alignment, strength, and even your breath. MELT is a perfect complement to yoga, whether you’re just starting or have been practicing for years. All participants must be able to get to and from the floor without assistance, since many moves are done on the floor. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited to 12 participants. Wear comfortable exercise clothes, bring a yoga mat and water.

DAY

Discover the basics of meditation such as what it is, what it isn’t, and what to expect. Students will discover the five essentials of a successful practice and its benefits that will unfold for you when you learn to meditate. Meditation allows you to create your own practice without listening to recordings, being guided, or joining groups. Space is limited. Pre-registration is required. Participants may only register one time for this free class.
