We will discuss the technology (past, current, and future) - along with the tactics, politics, and controversy. Topics will include: early unmanned aircraft; the Predator and Reaper; drone capacity and armaments; military/intelligence operations; surveillance and offensive capacity; targeting; books and movies; and do drones attacks encourage more terrorism? The Battle of Gettysburg: One of the Pivotal Events in U.S. History

Myers) – November 15 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Wednesday The Battle of Gettysburg was the most devastating battle of the American Civil War, with over 50,000 casualties. Learn about the battle’s strategies and the Generals (Lee and Meade, for example), who devised them – such as Pickett’s Charge and Little Round Top. The Union Victory at Gettysburg turned the tide against the Confederacy and although months of fighting lay ahead, America would ultimately be victorious and the Union restored. Atomic Spies

Myers) – November 17 at 10am – 11:30am, Friday Choose one of the course options above. During WWII and the Cold War, the Soviets stole US atomic secrets. We will address what US intelligence knew and how they knew it. We will also discuss the spies; why they did it and how they were caught. Most people know the basics, we will discuss the detail. Topics: the Rosenberg spy network; were they guilty and why they were executed; the Cambridge Five; Venona Project; the Manhattan Project; Bletchley Park; and lessor known spies. Third Party Presidential Candidates: Kingmakers or Spoilers?

In fact, only eight third-party candidates ever won ANY electoral votes, and only five have amassed more than 10% of the popular vote. This presentation examines third party candidates and the impact they have had on our presidential elections. Instructor: Jeffrey Margolis

The Manhattan Project

We will review the history of the US/UK project to build atomic bombs during WWII. Most Americans know the basic story. We will address the detail many people do not know. Topics will include: the men and the bombs; security; sabotage of the Nazi atomic program; heavy water; Los Alamos; Oak Ridge; Hanford; rational for using the bomb; and was the bomb necessary to end WWII. Father and Son Spies: Jim and Nat Nicholson

NC0240 – Naples Center (South Naples) – November 28 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Tuesday Jim Nicholson is the highest-ranking CIA officer ever convicted of espionage. While serving 24 years in prison, he recruited his son to resume his spying. This is a fascinating story of double betrayal. We will examine the treasonous actions and motives of both father and son, including what they did and how they were caught. We will also compare it to another father and son spy duo – John and Michael Walker convicted in 1985. Instructor: Thomas Eastwood
