BIOGRAPHIES Marilyn Monroe: Goddess without a Pedestal

$20 / $25

NC0018 – Naples Center (South Naples) – October 11 at 10am – 11:30am, Wednesday Controversies surrounding the death of this 36-year-old icon on the eve of remarrying the one man who truly loved her, Joe DiMaggio, have not gone away, nor has the mystique and mystery of her troubled life. Even her birth presents a mystery; her father unknown, she was abandoned to a life of abuse and foster homes. Hollywood stardom would be closely tied to the Rat Pack, Kennedys, and sadly, drugs. How did she like playing the ditzy blond? We’ll unwrap some of the mysteries but not all. Legends, too, need to keep some secrets. Instructor: Steven Mutart

Three Hollywood Johns and One Humphrey Bogart

$52 / $62

NC0019 – Naples Center (South Naples) – October 16, 18, 23, 25 at 10am – 11:30am, Mondays/Wednesdays Participants may register for the entire series (NC0019) or for any of the individual lectures below. Two legendary film directors, John Ford and John Huston – and screen icons, John Wayne (“Duke”) and Humphrey Bogart (“Bogie”) – drank, cursed, smoked, and swaggered across several decades of Hollywood bringing wonder, excitement, controversy, and color to our everyday world. Stage Coach, Fort Apache, Night of the Iguana, Maltese Falcon, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The African Queen, and other classics are their legacies which we will explore. See how magic was made and discover the fascinating men who made it. Instructor: Steven Mutart

John Wayne, The Duke

$20 / $25

NC0020 – Naples Center (South Naples) – October 16 at 10am – 11:30am, Monday Nicknamed after his Airedale, “Duke,” Marion Robert Morrison went from handsome stage hand to international superstar and American icon John Wayne over five decades, finally winning his first Academy Award for True Grit in 1969. A bigger than life character, he drank and swaggered for decades with pals like John Ford and John Huston. Stagecoach, Rio Bravo, The Quiet Man, The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The High and Mighty, and The Shootist, the last of his films, which totaled 170, were some of his achievements. This great actor may be gone, but not forgotten.

John Ford: A Splash of Irish Whiskey

$20 / $25

NC0021 – Naples Center (South Naples) – October 18 at 10am – 11:30am, Wednesday Fifty years and over 140 films bear the style, stamp, and personality of famed director John Ford. His westerns are the gold standard for the genre: tales of rugged, hard-living, romantic drifters, and the magnificent landscapes they roamed. His non-western, How Green Was My Valley, won Best Picture. One wife, lots of booze and girlfriends, and four Oscars for directing, helped define his life. His “stock company” claimed representation of many Hollywood legends.

John Huston: Cigars, Whiskey, and Movie Magic

$20 / $25

NC0022 – Naples Center (South Naples) – October 23 at 10am – 11:30am, Monday A gifted screen writer, John Marcellus Huston, son of Walter, finally got to direct his own script, The Maltese Falcon, and cast his new drinking buddy, Humphrey Bogart, in the lead role. Declared an instant classic, he went on to direct The Asphalt Jungle, The African Queen, Moby Dick, The Misfits, Night of the Iguana, and others. Six marriages, famous daughter Anjelica, and endless honors were also part of his extraordinary 81 years.

Humphrey Bogart (Bogie): One of a Kind

$20 / $25

NC0023 – Naples Center (South Naples) October 25 at 10am – 11:30am, Wednesday His first and only Academy Award came in 1951 for the grumpy, boozy, skipper of the steamer “African Queen,” capping thirty years of stage and film. But boat captain Charlie Allnut was just one of the many iconic roles immortalized by this complex and unique talent. Booze, John Huston, the Rat Pack, and Lauren Bacall were all part of his colorful life much like his roles on screen. Dead at 57, his legend lives on in Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, Key Largo, and dozens of other classics.

$20 / $25

NC0028 – Naples Center (South Naples) – November 7 at 10am – 11:30am, Tuesday In an age where the words “legend” and “icon” are often overused, no vocabulary exists to describe George Herman “Babe” Ruth’s enormous and electrifying effect on the public image of baseball. His interests were not limited to baseball, as booze and women were also part of his very open and larger-than-life story: seven World Series championships, “Murderer’s Row,” 714 homeruns, and records that are still unbroken today. The Babe truly was oneof-a-kind.

Willie Mays

$20 / $25

NC0029 – Naples Center (South Naples) – November 14 at 10am – 11:30am, Tuesday His 0 for 23 first at bats in 1951 did not bode well for the future Hall of Famer, but the next at bat home run of another future Hall of Famer, Warren Spawn, began one of the most exciting and spectacular journeys in baseball history. Is Willie Howard Mays, Jr. the greatest all-around baseball player ever? Let’s discuss and debate. And guess who was in the on-deck circle when Bobby Thomson’s shot was heard around the world? Baseball fans of the 40s, 50s, and 60s don’t want to miss this one.

$40 / $47

NC9187 – Naples Center (South Naples) – March 16 at 11am – 12:30pm, Friday This lecture will address the critical and artistic reception of Marcel Duchamp’s enigmatic final masterpiece, Etant donnés: 1. La chute d’eau, 2. Le gaz d’élairage…, of 1946-66. This environmental assemblage, which has been on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art since 1969, has been described by Jasper Johns as “the strangest work of art in any museum.” We will challenge the current notion of presentism as inherently flawed. Seen through the eyes of later artists, the work both captures and regenerates the dynamic forces of Duchamp’s subversive assemblage. Rina Banerjee: Make Me a Summary of the World

$40 / $47

NC9188 – Naples Center (South Naples) – April 6 at 11am – 12:30pm, Friday Rina Banerjee is known for her fanciful sculptures and installations made from materials sourced throughout the world. She is a voracious gatherer of objects – in a single sculpture one can find African tribal jewelry, colorful feathers, light bulbs, Murano glass, and South Asian antiques. While the visuals of Banerjee’s childhood in India greatly influence her aesthetic, her immigration to the U. S. as a young child and her love of her current home, New York City, form the core of her practice. We will focus on the way her work reflects the splintered experience of identity, tradition and culture. Instructor: Jodi Throckmorton, Curator of contemporary Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts

This lecture will explore how CO2 traps heat and warms the earth’s surface and atmosphere. The life of CO2 in the atmosphere is regulated by its absorption by plants and the ocean. Excessive emissions of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels are accumulating in the atmosphere because the oceans cannot possibly absorb it fast enough. The oceans absorb 25% of the CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels. However, this is causing the oceans to become more acidic and slow down the absorption rate of CO2 from the atmosphere. The acidity of the oceans plays a big part in managing all emissions of CO2, including natural emissions. The increasing atmospheric concentration of CO2 is also causing the average global temperatures to increase at a greater rate than in any period in past history. We will explore the role of photosynthesis in converting CO2 absorbed by terrestrial plants and ocean plankton to oxygen. We will also discuss the difference between anthropogenic CO2 and natural CO2 and the role of the earth’s astronomical orientation in climate changes. Instructor: Ken Soltys

Who would have thought an unproduced stage play “Everybody Comes to Rick’s” now in the 1942 hands of Warner Bros. would morph into one of the most beloved films in history. Humphrey Bogart was one of only three Americans cast, the rest immigrants and refugees of Hitler’s romp and rape of Europe. Most of the scenes where shot in Warner’s Stage 8. Bogie owned a big thanks to George Raft who turned down the role of Rick, the cynical ex-pat cafe owner. Ingrid Bergman preferred shots of her left side. Was it Fred Astaire, or was it Gene Kelly? We’ll let you decide in this two-part series that delves into the on and off camera lives of these extraordinarily talented men, separated by 13 years. Fred, the oldest, born in 1899, was convinced by his friend Gene Kelly to come out of retirement to star in Ziegfield Follies. The Babbitt and the Bromide routine is a classic, as are these two brilliant and unforgettable entertainers. Instructor: Steven Mutart

Fred Astaire

$20 / $25

NC0160– Naples Center (South Naples) – November 7 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Tuesday Whoever thought “no chin, big ears and bald” (words of legendary producer David O. Selznick) Fred Astaire would become one of Hollywood’s leading men, sweeping away lovely ladies like Cyd Charisse, Audrey Hepburn, Rita Hayworth, Leslie Caron, and did we mention Ginger Rogers? The ten iconic Astaire/Rogers films are the gold standard of pair dancing. Astaire is also known for his fine acting, comic timing, singing style and fabulous choreography with Hermes Pan. Was Gene Kelly his friend? How did the two icons of dance get along? And what about wives and “personal stuff”? We will all tap our feet to the beat of Steve Mutart’s talk about this very unique man.

Gene Kelly

$20 / $25

NC0161 – Naples Center (South Naples) – November 14 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Tuesday Gene Kelly’s childhood dream to play shortstop for the Pittsburg Pirates was long forgotten by the time he was dancing and starring with Rita Hayworth in the 1944 hit “Cover Girl.” Smash hits like “An American in Paris” in 1951 and “Singin’ in the Rain” in 1952 put him at the very top of not only the male musical leads, but for his multiple talents ranging from dance, song, acting, directing, and soon producing films of the highest quality. Being handsome didn’t hurt either. He co-starred in three movies with Frank Sinatra, and even convinced his pal Fred Astaire to come out of retirement. He feared no one, including Louis B. Meyer. We’ll find out about his three marriages, endless awards and his musical genius as we wrap up the debate.

Causes of the depressions and how each affected the sitting president and his people will be explored. What do these economic disruptions have in common with the situation today? American Presidents in Hard Times: 1776 – 1929 $20 / $25 NC0203 – Naples Center (South Naples) – October 18 at 1:30pm –3pm, Wednesday Congress had no power to tax as the Revolutionary War wore on. So desperate was the situation that George Washington went out of pocket to pay his troops. One hundred and fifty years later, after a half dozen or so significant economic booms and busts, Herbert Hoover was faced with a financial collapse of almost biblical proportions. Some said this was proof of the failure of capitalism and, by extension, the American way of life. We will explore the surprisingly similar causes of the panics of the 19th century and how they affected the sitting president and the country; and what, if any, effort was made to prevent them in the future, and if the root causes still exist today.

American Presidents in Hard Times: 1930 – Today $20 / $25 NC0204 – Naples Center (South Naples) – October 25 at 1:30pm –3pm, Wednesday Despite President Hoover’s best efforts, in 1933 President Roosevelt inherited an economic collapse that only got worse as continuing bank failures and mounting unemployment sank the nation to new depths. Unprecedented governmental action, WWII, and a revival of the natural business cycle saw prosperity return. The rest of the century saw its share of boom and bust, but nothing close to the depressed times of the 1930’s, that is until the so-called Great Recession of 2008. What comparisons can be made between these economic events and the reactions of the various presidents in office at the time?

Churchill’s Secret Army

$20 / $25

BR0209 – Brooks Commons Club (Bonita Springs) – October 20 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Friday Churchill created a special intelligence agency to set occupied Europe “ablaze” using “ungentlemanly” tactics. His inspiration came, in part, from the Irish Republican Army which waged a guerilla campaign against British rule. The Special Operations Executive (SOE) engaged in espionage, sabotage, assassination, reconnaissance, and along with the American OSS supported resistance movements. SOE ran a spy school, Camp X, in Canada where OSS agents were trained in “murder and mayhem”. Many were women. Camp X was also the site of Canada’s code breaking program (Hydra). Topics: Intrepid; training; agents; operations (including the destruction of Nazi heavy water and the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich); and movies inspired by SOE missions. Instructor: Thomas Eastwood.

Arthur, Benjamin Harrison and Martin Van Buren on a good day remain obscure. These names don’t pop to mind like Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, Roosevelt, Eisenhower, et al when we think of U.S. presidents. So maybe we can bring them out of the closet, shine some light on them, and learn about their lives and just what, if anything, did they contribute to the republic. Expect a lively discussion and many fun facts. Instructor: Steven Mutart

Outwitting the Gestapo

$20 / $25

AT0216 – Atrium Executive Center (South Ft. Myers) – October 25 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Wednesday Once Germany invaded Holland in WWII, people were determined to do something – anything – to fight, (resist) the Nazis. The most effective of these heroes were women. Some became saboteurs, some guided soldiers to freedom, some hid Jews, and some killed Nazis. If caught, of course, the women were usually tortured, leading to a slow painful death at the hands of the Gestapo. This course will explore the female contributions to the underground war effort, and why women were so successful in resisting. Instructor: Jan Brassem

A review of cold war intelligence, especially the seizure of the US spy ship Pueblo in international waters in 1968 by North Korea. DPRK is a threat to world peace. Its leader is a deranged despot who controls a huge standing army and uses his nuclear arsenal to bully the world. He lacks the ability to deliver his weapons to the US mainland, but he tweaks the US, as his grandfather did in 1968. One Pueblo crewman was killed and 82 were imprisoned and tortured for 11 months. Topics: the Pueblo mission and attack; diplomatic efforts; cold war “research” vessels; Russian “trawlers,” the captain and executive officer; aftermath. Instructor: Thomas Eastwood

Five Best and Worst U.S. Presidents

$20 / $25

NC0221 – Naples Center (South Naples) – October 30 at 1:30pm – 3pm, Monday Like naming the greatest baseball player or actor, selecting the best or worst President is a very subjective business, but over many decades and dozens of surveys, a consensus of the top and bottom five can reasonably be made. Selecting the criteria to make the choice is almost as subjective as the final selections themselves. We won’t let the cat out of the bag, so come weigh in on this informative and fun session. This is far less controversial than the new leader we chose last fall! Instructor: Steven Mutart

Historical Geography of the Biblical World (5hr In-Depth Seminar; Lunch Included)

$45 / $60

NC0222 – Naples Center (South Naples) – November 1 at 10am – 12pm and 12:30pm – 3:30pm, Wednesday Lunch is included with this full day seminar. Although it is one of the smallest areas of the world, the geographical region of Syria/ Palestine has some of the greatest variations in climate and topography found anywhere on earth. This region is a land-bridge 350 miles long and only 60 miles wide. It is situated between Africa to the southwest, the Arabian Peninsula to the southeast, Asia Minor to the northwest, and Mesopotamia to the northeast. Understanding the historical geography of this region, the heart and soul of Western religious tradition, can help us better understand our collective past. Instructor: Dr. Steven Derfler

Jerusalem: 3000 Years of Holiness (5hr In-Depth Seminar; Lunch Included)

$45 / $60

AT0223 – Atrium Executive Center (South Ft. Myers) – Nov 2 at 9:30am – 12pm and 12:30pm – 3pm, Thursday Lunch is included with this full day seminar. Ten measures of beauty were descended upon the world by God; Jerusalem received nine of them. Yet ten measures of sorrow were visited upon the world by God as well: Jerusalem received nine of them, according to the Babylonian Talmud. Jerusalem began as the City of Ophel of the Jebusites, was occupied by Rome, invaded by crusaders, and today is the capital of Israel. The Jerusalem of antiquity was home to the ancient Israelites who worshiped at Solomon’s Temple. Explore the city’s long religious legacies, from its historical roots to today’s modern Hekal Shlomo Synagogue. Learn about the setting of the city during the time of Jesus. See how Christian traditions developed in Jerusalem, changed over the centuries, and are observed today. During the 7th century CE, the Caliph Omar ruled Jerusalem, protecting the holy site where it is written that the Prophet Muhammad rose to heaven, came face to face with God, received the teachings of Islam, and brought them home. The Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque mark that spot today, and Arabs still refer to Jerusalem as Al Kuds, or “the Holy.” Instructor: Dr. Steven Derfler

Their work did not especially focus on romance or nature, though any writer will touch on those things. Blake, Burns, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Byron and Shelley wrote at a time when poets were no longer being as greatly esteemed as heretofore, as science and capitalism took hold in the modern world. They generally rejected traditional politics and religion, preferring their own perceptions and values. They left us great writing and many lines and phrases which have found a permanent place in our discourse, such as “water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink,” “auld lang syne” that we sing every New Year’s Eve, and “beauty is truth, truth beauty – that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.” Instructor: Dr. William Miller

Voltaire: Candide

$20 / $25

BV0265 – Bentley Village (North Naples) – December 4 at 1pm – 2:30pm, Monday Francois Marie Arouet (1694 – 1778) is the greatest of the “philosophes” of the late 18th century. He wrote prodigiously; enough to fill more than 100 volumes of his works and more than 100 volumes of letters. He wrote in all genres: novels, poetry, essays and theater. Intellectually, he dominated 18th century Europe. Frederick the Great of Prussia said of him: “there is only one God, and one Voltaire.” Voltaire was a master of satire and still makes us laugh at the same time he confronts us with a certain number of complex questions. Do we have a chance of happiness on this earth? If so, how can we achieve happiness? Instructor: Dr. Marlies Mueller

There are no hard-and-fast rules to follow that always assure your picture will be, well, “picture perfect.” However, an understanding of light, exposure, and compositional guidelines that can be applied to virtually any scene will enhance its impact and quality. Understanding these principles will help you to capture more compelling images, turning your snapshots into works of art. This class is for all photographers, regardless of the camera they use.
