let’s recap

SCOUTING THE HOME TEAM

Despite a second-half surge by Kennesaw State, the team picked up its fourth double-digit Atlantic Sun win Thursday night at the KSU Convocation Center. With the 69-55 victory, the team began conference play with a perfect 4-0 record for the fifth-consecutive year.

• The Bears of Mercer are 9-7 this season with a 2-3 Atlantic Sun record. The team started the year with a 7-4 nonconference record before earning wins over North Florida and Lipscomb but falling to Jacksonville, Northern Kentucky and Stetson. The team is 4-3 at home this year.

Led by 10 points from Dunson, the Eagles took control in the first half. FGCU capitalized on nine Kennesaw turnovers to score 14 points and went into the break with a 36-24 advantage. The Owls challenged the Eagles in the second half and cut the deficit to just two points midway through the half but FGCU responded to outscore the home team 27-15 in the final 10 minutes to earn the win.

• As a team, the Bears are averaging 64.1 points per game this season, while allowing opponents to 65.7 points per contest. The Bears have successfully converted 39.2 percent of shots from the field and 26.1 percent of shots from long range. Bear foes are shooting 38.4 percent this season with a 31.4 percent clip from beyond-the-arc. The Bears average just 12.4 turnovers per game, while dishing out 13.7 assists and grabbing 5.4 steals. • The Bears boast a versatile lineup with six players to watch this season. Offensively, the team is led by two Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Team members in junior guards Precious Bridges and Brianna Williams. Bridges has averaged a team-high 17 points per games this season and has grabbed a team-leading 22 steals but did not see the court against Stetson and is unlikely to play on Saturday due to a health issue. Williams adds 12 points per game and currently leads the conference in career 20+ point games. She put up 14 points in 26 minutes in the team’s loss to Stetson on Thursday. Mercer also capitalizes on two others averaging over 10 points per game in Kendra Grant and Alicia Williams. The duo has averaged 11.5 and 11.2 points per game, respectively and combined for 30 points against Stetson. Sharnea Boykin has facilitated the offense this season with 107 assists and ranks 13th in the nation in assists per game. Boykin recorded eight assists while playing all 40 minutes against Stetson. Defensively, Teanna Robinson currently leads the nation with 4.31 blocks per game and pulls down 11.5 rebounds per game. The junior swatted seven shots against Stetson. • The Bears earned the no. 3 seed in last season’s Atlantic Sun Conference tournament after finishing the season with a record of 20-12 overall and 13-5 in conference. The team fell to Stetson in the semifinal but went on to play in the Women’s Basketball Invitational. This season, the Bears were selected to finish third in the conference preseason poll, behind just FGCU and Stetson.

nonconference competition

nearing the top

The Green & Blue took on 12 teams from 10 different conferences during nonconference action this season. They went 6-6. Here’s the breakdown.

Sarah Hansen’s accolades and milestones keep adding up. The senior currently ranks 12th among all-time Atlantic Sun players with 1,663 points. She sits 149 points out of the top-10. Hansen also ranks 27th in all-time rebounds at 754 boards.

giving charity With a new emphasis on hand check rules, there is a common perception this season that there are more fouls called and in turn more free-throws awarded. However, since the transition to Division I in 2007, the Eagles have averaged 18.15 free throw attempts per game, and this season they have gone to the charity stripe an average of 20 times per game. The number of free throws made and attempted each year has fluctuated. Here we see that this year the number is not out of line with past seasons.

hot streak With 40 straight Atlantic Sun regular season wins, the Eagles hold the second-best conference win streak in the nation. They sit behind only Baylor.

SIMPLY THE BEST In three-consecutive seasons the Eagles have set three separate 3-point records.

•350 made 3-pointers

•342 made 3-pointers

(A-Sun Season Record | 2010-11) (NCAA Season Record | 2012-13)

•22 made 3-pointers

(NCAA Game Record | Jan. 12, 2013)

The 350 made shots in 2010-11 did not count as a NCAA record due to the Eagles’ transition to DI.

UP NEXT: JACKSONVILLE • Following the matchup in Macon, the Eagles will return to Fort Myers to host Jacksonville and North Florida next weekend. The Dolphins of Jacksonville are currently 7-8 on the season but a perfect 4-0 in Atlantic Sun action. JU will face another unbeaten team in Northern Kentucky on Saturday before traveling to Southwest Florida. The Dolphins faced two similar opponents to FGCU in nonconference action with USF and Bethune-Cookman. JU fell in both contests, while the Eagles picked up two wins. • As a team, the Dolphins have averaged 66.4 points per game, while allowing opponents to score a similar 66.1 points per contest. JU has shot 40 percent from the field this season with foes converting 39.7 percent of shots. • Individually, the Dolphins are led by a duo of doubledigit scorers. Sharrand Reddick leads the team with 14.5 points per game and a team-high 32 3-pointers. Reddick has converted 41.3 percent of shots and has made 80 percent of the team’s shots from beyond-the-arc. Queen Alford adds 13.5 points per game and 6.5 rebounds for the Dolphins. • The Eagles are 11-1 in 12 all-time meetings between the two teams. FGCU dropped the first ever meeting, 62-58 in Jacksonville but has since defeated JU in 11-straight games. • After finished last season with an 11-19 record including a 7-11 mark in A-Sun action, the Dolphins were selected to finish seventh in the conference this season. The team is led by first-year Head Coach Yolette McPhee-McCuin.

ALICO ARENA Since opening its doors in December 2002, Alico Arena has served as the centerpiece of FGCU athletics. In addition to the 4,500 seat basketball and volleyball facility, the arena houses Athletic Department staff offices, 12 locker rooms, a full suite of luxury boxes, a hospitality suite, the Human Performance Athletic Training Center, a fitness center and an auxiliary gym.

Hansen’s 28-point performance against Saint Joseph’s was the senior’s 17th 20+ point game of her career. The mark is tied with Mercer’s Briana Williams for the best in the Atlantic Sun.
