ATAGLANCE

FGCU will closeout its two-game road swing and its part in the Razorback Showcase when it takes on SEC foe Arkansas on Monday night in Fayetteville at Bud Walton Arena. The Eagles are coming off a 74-70 win at Grambling and will be in search of just their third three-game win streak since joining Division I in 2007-08. The contest will be the fourth in 10 days for the Blue and Green, while the Razorbacks have played just one game.

TRADITIONVS.FUTURE

Entering just the ninth season in program history, including the fourth in Division I, FGCU will square off against an Arkansas program that has been in existence since 1923-24 (88th year) and has six Final Fours to its credit. FGCU joined the Atlantic Sun in 2007-08, while Arkansas has been a member of the SEC since 1990.

20/20VISION

Senior REED BAKER and junior TIM SNYDER poured in 23 and 21 points, respectively, at Grambling to mark the fourth time a pair of players have gone for at least 20 points in the same game since FGCU joined Division I. Baker was a part of the feat in each of the last two years, while the 20-point outing was his second in a row. The Naples, Fla. product has 11 career 20-point games and done so it back-to-back games three times, including a four-game streak in 2008-09.

Now in its fourth year of Division I status, the FGCU athletic department's 14 sports will all be eligible for postseason play in 2011-12. FGCU is finishing up its four-year Division I re-classifying period in which it could fast track just one men's sport and one women's sport. After scoring over 100 points in each of their exhibition games, the Razorbacks opened the season with an easy 75-52 win over Grambling on Thursday evening. Clark, who is fresh off a season in which he made 100 three-pointers, led the way against Grambling with 20 points on five trifectas. Deemed the top shooter in the nation by Sporting News and a preseason All-SEC second team choice by the league head coaches, Clark averaged 26.7 points over six game in November last year. Sophomore Marshawn Powell exploded onto the SEC scene in 2009-10, averaging 14.9 points and 6.7 rebounds en route to Freshman All-American status. Powell was a preseason All-SEC first team choice by the league head coaches. Iowa transfer Jeff Peterson figures to make a big impact at the point guard position after averaging 10.6 points and 4.2 assists per game as a Hawkeye in 2008-09.

Playing in just his second game at the Division I level, junior MARLON RIVERA fell just one assist shy of become the first player in FGCU history to register a triple-double against Southeast Missouri. Rivera's dominating performance on both ends of the court featured 16 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists over 33 minutes. His double-double was the team's first of the year.

BOARD WORK

Not equipped with a lot of size in the paint, FGCU makes up for it by staying active on the offensive glass. Led by preseason AllConference choice ANTHONY BANKS, the Eagles ranked third in the Atlantic Sun in 2009-10 in offensive rebounds per game (13.6). The Eagles are back at it again this season, grabbing 45 offensive caroms over the first three games to tie for the league lead. FGCU has grabbed double figure offensive boards in 30 of its last 33 games, dating back to the final contest of the 2008-09 season. Banks' 10 offensive rebounds this season put him in a tie for second in the A-Sun (3.3).

MR. EFFICIECENCY

After finishing second in the A-Sun in field goal percentage as a freshman in 2009-10, ANTHONY BANKS is out to take over the crown in his second campaign. Through three games, Banks sports a 60 percent (18-30) clip from the field, good for fifth in the conference. A career 57 percent (171-300) shooter, Banks has made 50 percent or better from the field in 24 of 32 career games.

LICENSE TO STEAL

Along with his scoring prowess, senior REED BAKER has upped his game on the defensive end with seven steals over the first three games. Baker registered three steals at Indiana and did the same against Southeast Missouri to rank tied for fifth in the A-Sun. For his career, Baker has 15 multi-steal games, highlighted by seven against ETSU on Jan. 12, 2009 the second most in single-game history.

TAKING CHARGE

A key component is FGCU's win over Grambling was its ability to draw charges. For the game, the Eagles took six charges, led by three from both redshirt sophomore ANTHONY BANKS and junior TIM SNYDER.

ON THE OFFENSIVE

Redshirt sophomore ANTHONY BANKS leads the charge on the offensive glass after grabbing 100 offensive caroms in 200910. In just 30 career games, Banks has snared five or more offensive boards in a game 10 times, including five at Indiana. The Lantana, Fla. product has grabbed an offensive rebound in 29 of 31 games and had his streak of 29 straight contests snapped against Southeast Missouri State. Banks totaled nine offensive boards against Jacksonville (Jan. 9, 2010), starting a three-game stretch in which he grabbed 21.

HEATING UP

Senior REED BAKER has not only scored in double figures in all three games this season, he's reached the double-digit plateau in three halves. Baker enters Monday's showdown with Arkansas with double figure points in three of the last four halves after scoring a career-high 28 points against SEMO and 23 more at Grambling. Below is a breakdown of Baker's double figure halves. 1ST HALF 1

2ND HALF 2

TOTAL 3

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

Redshirt sophomore Anthony Banks celebrated his 21st birthday on Saturday by helping FGCU win at Grambling with his sixth career double-double. Banks scored 15 points and added a game-high 10 rebounds, including five offensive.

SCORING FRENZY

On the strength of a 53-point second half last Tuesday night against Southeast Missouri, FGCU scored a program Division I record 89 points against the Redhawks. The Eagles knocked down 56 percent (33-59) of their shots for the game; also a program D-I record. Over its last two games, FGCU has produced 102 points (51 ppg) in the second half.

BANKS UPDATE

After having successful surgery to repair a broken bone in his right foot over the summer, Atlantic Sun preseason All-Conference forward ANTHONY BANKS is averaging 15.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game this season after a double-double at Grambling. The 2009-10 A-Sun All-Freshmen team choice suffered the same injury on the opposite foot prior to the start of his true-freshman season. Banks was expected to be out until the start of A-Sun play in December.

TAKING AIM

After becoming just the fourth player in Atlantic Sun history to lead the conference in free throw percentage two straight years (08-09, 09-10), senior REED BAKER will look to become just the second player to accomplish the feat in three straight seasons. Belmont's Steve Drabyn (01-04) is the only player in A-Sun history to lead the league three consecutive years.

YOU CAN BANKS ON IT

The versatility of ANTHONY BANKS was on full display in 2009-10, as the then-redshirt freshman made his way onto the A-Sun's All-Rookie team. Banks led the Eagles in five different categories and was the only player to start all 29 games. Over the 29 games, Banks led FGCU in scoring 11 times and rebounding on 14 occasions, including both in the same game four times. Banks reached double figures in 21 games with five doubledoubles. HEADCOACHDAVEBALZA BIO

The first and only coach in FGCU men’s basketball history, Dave Balza is in his ninth season at the helm of the program. In May 2001, Balza was selected from over 200 candidates to be the program's first men's basketball head coach. Balza's teams are renowned for playing an exciting, up-tempo, hard-nosed basketball. His FGCU teams have posted a combined 143-101 record (.586 winning percentage) over the first eight years of competition. In 2007-08, Balza led the Eagles into their first season at the Division I level as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. Since then, Balza and his staff have landed back-to-back recruiting classes ranked in the top three in the A-Sun by Hoop Scoop Online. This year’s incoming class of eight players ranked second in the league. Balza’s eye for talent at the Division I level has started to come to fruition, as the Eagles have landed a player on the A-Sun All-Freshmen team the last two years. In

2008-09, Reggie Chambers became the first FGCU player to ever make the rookie squad, while Anthony Banks was unanimous choice last year. Banks’ abilities also earned praise from the league coaches this past October when he became the first player in program history named to the A-Sun Preseason All-Conference team. FGCU has been competitive over its first three years in Division I, producing a 29-62 record heading into its fourth and final transition year in 2010-11. Arguably, the biggest win in the brief three-year Division I history of the program came in 2009-10 when FGCU defeated BIG EAST foe DePaul, 64-61, at Alico Arena for its first-ever win over a BCS school. Balza and the Eagles will be eligible for postseason play in 2010-11. Hired a year before the program started, Balza led FGCU to a 114-39 record over its five seasons in Division II (2002-07). Over those five campaigns, the Eagles produced four 20-win seasons, highlighted by a 27-6 mark in their final year (2006-07) before entering Division I. Three of the team’s six losses that year came to Division I com-

petition (Drexel, Penn, Butler). In 2004-05, Balza guided the Eagles to a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament - their first year eligible for post-season selection. The Eagles 24-7 mark was the most wins in program history at that point, while the Blue and Green posted the best rebounding margin in NCAA Division II (+10.2). Balza's Eagles went 22-5 in 2003-04, opening the season by winning their first 14 games, The Eagles were ranked in the top-20 in the nation for the entire year, reaching as high as No. 5. They ran their home winning streak to 29 games and were the only Division II team in the country with victories over Division I teams (Eastern Illinois, IPFW) on consecutive nights. In FGCU's inaugural season in 2002-03, Balza led the Eagles to a 23-9 record. They opened Alico Arena with a 14-0 home mark on the season and averaged 82 points per game. Balza prepared for his task of building the FGCU program from scratch by helping to rebuild three struggling programs. He made his mark as a head coach at St. Joseph's (Indiana) in the vaunted Great Lakes Valley Conference, considered the premier Division II basketball conference in the nation. One week before classes began, Balza took over a St. Joseph's program that had been placed on two-year probation by the NCAA and proceeded to win more conference games than in the previous two seasons combined. More important, he restored a clean image to a program steeped in tradition. After wading through the penalties of the two-year probation, he won 18 games in his third year in a league that included three top-10 teams in the country. As a result, Balza was selected as the 2001 GLVC Coach of the Year and the Region Coach of the Year. Balza was also an assistant at Division II Ashland (Ohio) from 1996-98 and spent five years as an assistant at Division I Cleveland State from 1991 to 1996. Both of those coaching staffs took over programs that had been placed on probation and had great success turning around the fortunes of their teams, winning 18 games at Ashland and 22 games at Cleveland State in just his second year at each institution. At Cleveland State, Balza made his name as a recruiter, helping to assemble one of the top 35 recruiting classes in the country. Balza has preached of "building a first class tradition" since taking the reins at Florida Gulf Coast University. He

has molded the Eagles into a model program for integrity on the basketball floor, in the classroom, and in the community. Academic success and community involvement are just as important to Balza as on-court preparation. His Eagles have never had a semester team GPA below a 2.70 and have hovered at or above a 3.0 cumulative GPA for most of his tenure. In addition, Balza's teams have been very active in the community, helping the athletics program reach more than 10,000 youngsters in Southwest Florida through events such as: Eagle Reading, Eagle Math, Community Reach Out Program, Habitat for Humanity, Hoops for the Heart, visits to hospitals, and volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House. A native of South Haven, Mich., Balza is a 1991 graduate of the University of Michigan, where he served first as a student manager with the 1989 National Championship team and later as a student assistant and video coordinator. Balza earned a master's degree in education from Cleveland State University in 1993. He is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and has been published in the NABC Courtside magazine on the topic of post play. Balza now resides in Fort Myers with his wife, Karrie, and daughter, Faith.

Game #2 FGCU (1-1)

Nov. 12, 2010 at Assembly Hall

Nov. 16, 2010 at Alico Arena

Indiana (1-0) - 88 FGCU (0-1) - 60

- 89 Southeast Missouri (0-2) - 78

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Behind 24 points from sophomore Christian Watford and 14 three-pointers, Indiana defeated the FGCU men’s basketball team, 88-60, in the season opener for both clubs on Friday night in front of 15,478 fans at historic Assembly Hall. Watford poured in 16 of his gamehigh 24 points in the second half to led three players in double figures for IU. The Hoosiers torrid shooting night included a 53 percent (30-57) clip from the field and 14-of-28 from long range. The game marked the third straight season the Eagles have opened up on the road against a BCS foe, as they fall to 0-1 heading into Tuesday’s home opener against Southeast Missouri State. The season-opening win was the 26th in a row for the Hoosiers. Redshirt sophomore ANTHONY BANKS (pictured) showed no signs of just returning from a broken foot, leading the Blue and Green with 16 points and six rebounds, including five on the offensive end. Senior REED BAKER was the only other FGCU player in double figures with 12 points and three steals. Banks’ five offensive rebounds highlighted a night in which the Eagles grabbed 15 caroms on the offensive end. Just a year removed from grabbing 100 offensive boards, Banks has now grabbed five or more offensive rebounds in nine of 30 career contests.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Senior REED BAKER (pictured) poured in a career-high 28 points and a near triple-double from junior MARLON RIVERA led the FGCU men’s basketball team to a 53-point second half during a 89-78 win over Southeast Missouri, 89-78, in front of 2,011 fans at Alico Arena in its home opener on Tuesday night. The backcourt duo of Baker and Rivera combined for 44 points, as the Eagles’ 89 points were their most since entering Division 1 in 200708 and the most since Feb. 26, 2007 when they defeated North College and State, 99-62, at Alico Arena. Baker’s 10th career 20-point game came on 10-of-12 from the field and 7-of-11 from the charity stripe, as the Naples, Fla. product registered 13 points in the first half and 15 in the final frame. Rivera finished just one assist shy of the program’s first-ever triple-double, registering 16 points, 11 rebounds and a game-high nine assists in 33 minutes of action. Lost in the shuffle of the FGCU’s backcourt’s stellar play was redshirt sophomore Anthony Banks’ 16-point night that came in a foul-plagued 19 minutes. Banks knocked down 7-of-9 from the floor for his second straight 16-point game to start the season. FGCU shot 56 percent (33-59) from the field for the game, including a sizzling 59 percent (20-34) in the second half. The Eagles’ hot-shooting night was aided by 42 points in the paint and 20 assists on 33 field goals.

ARKANSAS (NOV. 22)

Game #3 FGCU (2-1)

- 74 Grambling (0-4) - 70

Nov. 20, 2010 at Hobdy Arena GRAMBLING, La. - Senior REED BAKER sank seven free throws in the final minute, while junior TIM SNYDER (pictured) scored a seasonhigh 21 points to help the FGCU men’s basketball team hold on for a 74-70 win at Grambling State Saturday evening at Hobdy Arena. The two-time defending Atlantic Sun free throw percentage leader, Baker sank 14-of-16 from the charity stripe on the night en route to his second straight 20-point game and the 11th of his career. Baker did a majority of his damage in the final 20 minutes, scoring 15 of his game-high 23 points while also adding eight rebounds. It was a good night for the FGCU post players, as well, led by Snyder’s 21 points that included 13 in the final frame. Snyder had his battles at the free throw line (5-14), but went 8-of-12 from the field, scoring in a variety of ways. Redshirt sophomore ANTHONY BANKS celebrated his 21st birthday with his sixth career double-double. Banks finished with 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, highlighted by five on the offensive glass, despite battling foul trouble. Banks' 11th career five-plus offensive rebound game spearheaded a night in which the Eagles grabbed 17 offensive boards. The 17 offensive caroms and a 56 percent shooting clip (1425) in the second half helped FGCU recover from a 26-of-46 effort at the free throw line and 21 turnovers. One game after scoring 53 points in the second half, FGCU poured in 49 in the final frame.
