Resume Development Guide

Purpose of a Resume A resume is a professional representation of your education, experience, and skills. It is a marketing document used to obtain internships, jobs, research experience, and entrance into graduate and professional programs. The goal of your resume is to obtain an interview.

Types of Resumes CHRONOLOGICAL This type of resume consists of a reverse chronological list of education, job experiences, and accomplishments. Start with your current or most recent experience and end with your earliest position. As the most common type of resume, it is recommended for college students, professionals staying in the same career field, and for those working in a field where traditional job search methods are utilized. Typically, the chronological resume is one to two pages long.

FUNCTIONAL This type of resume highlights the professional skills you have gained throughout your career. The content is similar to a chronological resume but presented around skill clusters. This format is recommended for professionals with a variety of work experience, individuals interested in a career change who do not have direct job experience in the new career area, those who have changed employers frequently and those who have been absent from the job market or have gaps in employment. The functional resume is typically one to two pages long.

CURRICULUM VITAE This is a specialized resume used within the academic community to highlight work experience as well as research interests and professional development within an academic setting. The format is recommended for graduate students and for those pursuing teaching or research positions in a college or university.

For additional information, contact the Toppel Career Center at 305-284-5451.

Resume Format There is no one correct way to design a resume. The format is based on your professional and educational experiences, and should be unique to you. Consider utilizing the Optimal Resume software (through HireACane.com) to create your document. Length: Resumes are typically one page for undergraduates and one to three pages for graduate students and alumni. Avoid only filling half of a page. Font: Font size should be between 10-12. Choose a font that is professional, including Arial, Calibri, and Times New Roman. Having more than one font style can be distracting to the reader. Margins: Ensure that margins are consistent; ½ inch to 1 inch is appropriate. Text vs. White Space: The resume should not be too text heavy, nor should it have too much white space. Strive for a balance that is appealing to the eye. Consistency: The content of the resume should be single-spaced; use doublespacing between sections and headings. Maintain consistent formatting throughout, including the use of bold, italics, or underlines. Do not overdesign the resume, as this can overwhelm the reader.

1

Required Components There are several components that are important to include in every resume. The following examples reflect the chronological format.

CONTACT INFORMATION Your most current contact information should be included at the top of the resume. It is important to provide accurate information so that a potential employer can easily reach you.

EDUCATION Academic credentials are very important to an employer, particularly if you are relatively new to the job market or if you are pursuing a job that requires specific training. $ !

2

EXPERIENCE An employer will look over your resume to see what experiences and skills you have gained and determine if they are relevant to the current position. This section can include internships, leadership experience, and part-time jobs. Do not limit yourself to paid experiences. It is important to create accomplishment statements that emphasize the skills you have developed and any positive outcomes. % ! >

7 : formula below to highlight key responsibilities and skills

What I Did + Skills I Used = Results I Got

What I Did + Skills I Used = Results I Got What I Did: This part of the formula is basically your job description. This is the starting point for your bullet statement, and describes the task at hand. If you only indicate what you did, you are not giving the reader a comprehensive understanding of what you accomplished.

SAMPLE: +2( ( ' * 3 ! 8 + 4154 3 outstanding customer service and needs assessment, exceeding corporate sales objectives - level of cold-calling new clients

SKILLS

Skills I Used: This is the most important part of the formula. For example, skills can include oral/written communication, customer service, and proficiency with computer programs. Providing information about skills is also particularly important if you are applying to positions and lack relevant experience.

In the current work environment, computer skills are essential. In the global marketplace, many companies are also looking to hire employees who are proficient in two or more languages. : '
