Rachel Allen 07495 055048 rachel@festivaleventsandplanning.com www.festivaleventsandplanning.com

Well here we are again my lovelies. So wonderful to have you back with us as Spring has sprung. In celebration of the world waking up (in more ways than one this Spring) we have looked at some fabulous floral features for you this time. As always, our team have been really busy sourcing the best guest writers and inspo for you in a very scarce market. But are we downhearted? Not at all. We firmly believe that the world is about to wake up. In fact we are sprinkling our positivity as we go, making sure that all our gorgeous couples are feeling the love and have some positivity. Our lovely Wedding Fayre Festival love-child, The Wedding Party is back, at Walton Hall and Gardens is scheduled for the 25th of July 2021, so we will see you all there with some of our absolutely favourite wedding family of suppliers. We have fashion, cars, flowers, décor and much, much more. We are giddy as a kipper in anticipation for getting back to doing what we absolutely love. My Mum (more about her later) always said that if you love what you do, you will never do a day’s work in your life, and do you know what, she was spot on. Now to this edition, and what a jam-packed edition it is. I wanted to share with you some ideas about the etiquette of the intimate wedding. Although Features Editor, Lara, did say that my article should come with a government health warning, because I wanted you to understand that you can be brutal with cutting your guest list down if you have to. If what is important to you is saying your vows, then what else is there to think about? Photography is absolutely vital on your special day, because it keeps the memories alive in your living room for years to come. Getting those all-important images spot on

has never been easier. I mean look at the fabulous cover shot by Jaine Briscoe-Price, another of our gorgeous Photographers. But in case you need a helping hand, we have pulled together some of the most important tips you can take into consideration whilst finding, choosing and working with your photographer. ‘Are you having kids?’ is a question that so many newlyweds get asked, so we thought about how that applies to couples on their wedding day. Do you want to have the pitter patter of tiny feet running around, or is it your worst nightmare? In the next article, we examine the top table and the decisions that often couples find the hardest. For example, if kids are in the ceremony, where do they sit? In the age of blended families, it is such a challenging thing to get your top table just right for you. We have come up with a nonexhaustive suggestion list, to see what works the best for you. After all, your wedding day should be about the two of you, not the people around you who only share their love for you. You might look at a bouquet and not know how to describe it to your florist. So we thought it would be a great idea to give you Spring 2021

The Etiquette of the Intimate So, when are the big weddings going to start again? Once Bojo makes a decision is the answer. Our Editor, Rach, chats all things etiquette when it comes to intimate weddings in 2021

2020 being a non-starter for those lush big family weddings, on all of the forums that W ith we are on, we keep seeing the panic from couples who are waiting to hear whether the

country will be open enough for their dream day to go ahead. So, here at Festival HQ we started to think about how this may have changed weddings in the longer term and what the etiquette is behind the smaller weddings that may just be a fixture. My first wedding was a big affair, with Great Aunty Mable telling me how much I had grown and giving me ten pence for some sweets. In fact, most of the people I invited were for my parents, my ex-husband’s parents or because I felt obliged to invite them. Would it not be great to be free of that burden?

PLUS ONES

Now is the perfect time to remove those plus ones. Your guests should be there to see you get married because they love you. Plus ones are expensive to feed and are not really integral to your day, so with the current circumstances in mind, ditch those hanger on-erers who just don’t need to be there.

KIDS

Unless they actually belong to you, do you really need to have the kids there? It’s a bum on a seat that could be taken up with someone who you are really close to. I am sure that your squad are more important to

you, particularly in light of regulations that have meant you all spending so much time apart over the last twelve months.

WORKMATES

The workmates debate has gone on forever. In your office you will have been chatting about your wedding since you set the date and there may be an expectation that your workmates will attend. Unless you work with your bestie, like me, they can go into the no pile. Night-time dos used to be the best place for the workmates and now that they have gone, just forget about offending anyone.

WE WENT TO THEIR WEDDING…

Again, unless it’s your bestie, this pile of acquaintances who wanted you to see the grandeur of their big day can be placed into the maybe or no piles, dependent on how much you love them. Spring 2021

FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Let’s face it, how many of us get together with Aunts and Uncles all the time? Cousins don’t generally spend as much time together as they get older, so this extension list can probably be binned. This is probably the only time you will ever get away with being able to cut people without causing any offence (although what actually happens if someone is offended – absolutely nothing). Removing the not so immediate family will really help you get those critical numbers down below the 15 or 30 very quickly. Remember, those who have destination weddings have been doing this for yonkles and I cannot recall seeing mass murder happen because cousins did not come to a wedding.

BEING PART OF IT

With such limited numbers, those gorgeous special people are perfect for readings, walking you down the aisle, being your best (wo)man, your MoH etc. You are going to need help, so get them involved and your day will be all the better for it. The intimacy of being in a small wedding is absolutely gorgeous, and I should know, I had 18 people at mine. If they were in the room it was because I loved them, not because they grew up next door to me.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT ANYWAY?

Now you might be an absolute party animal and feel the need to be 200 deep in your friends, family and randomers that you met once in a toilet queue, so with the current circumstances, the etiquette could dictate that you say your vows and plan a bigger party later on in the year or next year. I would have jumped at the chance to wear my wedding dress again for a party. I wasn’t even going to wear a dress until my husband dragged me kicking and screaming into a dress shop and made me try one on and whilst I did not

really care about what I wore, he definitely picked the right one. To be honest, I loved it that much that I would have worn it to the Supermarket if I could. So, a second wear with all my guests would have been ace as we celebrated later in the year. It was a great day, with so much relaxed fun, I would have done it again in a heartbeat.. The days of massive weddings may seem distant but there are so many positives to having the small intimate wedding. When you become a grown up, you soon realise that money makes the world go round. With that in mind, perhaps the biggest reason to go ahead with a smaller more intimate day is Financial. 200 people at £60 a head is 12 thousand pounds. Shall I say that again……. 12 thousand pounds. Whereas 15 people at £60 per person will set you back nine hundred. What would you like to do with the £11,100 you could save? And that is just the food and wine. The décor, flowers, photography, videography, entertainment and other such items just are not ‘must-haves’ at the moment. The days of going into debt for a huge wedding could be numbered and there is always something else to fix, buy or a fabulous honeymoon to plan, that this spare money could go to when you are just starting out in wedded bliss. It is a funny old saying ‘the other half’ isn’t it. It kind of insinuates that you aren’t a complete person. So I’ll change that and say the yin to your yang is the most important bit. Aunty Mable is nice and who doesn’t want 10p for some sweets, but as long as the person that you love is there and you get to say the words that you want to say to him/her surely the day will be absolutely bloody marvellous. Picture Perfect

If you have ever asked a happy couple what the single most important thing was they had at their Wedding to them after the event, they will say the photographer. We thought we would formulate a guide to help you get those all-important images spot-on

the last guest has gone home and you have climbed the stairs, shoes in hand, the next W hen thing that you turn your focus to is those snapshots and official photographs, because

these will be the things that enable you to go back to the memory of your Wedding Day, time and time again. In my Hall I have pictures of all my significants’ Wedding Days and they make me smile every time I come through the door. In this, the age of Instagram, so many people have got used to the perfect angle, filters and the best lighting amendments available to a smart phone, so how do you ensure that you get those picture-perfect memories to reflect your day and hang in your Hall for generations?

CHECK YOUR MAKE UP

I know it sounds obvious but checking your make up is the first step. Whether you’re a crier or an eye rubber, nervous or too hot, chances are that your make up will need a touch up beyond the ceremony. Get your MoH to pop a few bits and a mirror into her bag for you. A top up of lippy will always help you to feel a million dollars and if like some brides you get nervous skin (although you really should see Lara if you do for some of her lotions and potions to help), a mineral powder will give you that natural glow and take 30 seconds to apply. 14

Spring 2021

CHOOSE THE RIGHT ANGLE

You know yourself and your partner better than your photographer does. So, communicate with them beforehand. Send some snapshots of the two of you that you love. This will really help him/her get a measure of what you are looking for out of your photography. Have a look through their portfolio and pick out the shots that you love the most, sharing what it is about them that you love. Gone are the days of traditional line up shots, although if you want a specific set of photographs, it is totally worth giving them a list. This is normally important to older members of your family who are more

Spring 2021

15

likely to pop a more formal shot up on their mantlepiece. The styling now is generally more relaxed and informal and if your photographer knows what you want in terms of angles you are more likely to get relaxed photography as a result.

LISTEN TO YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

Photographers are likely to have done hundreds of weddings and let’s face it, they are the professional, so will normally have an idea of what is going to work. It is always worth trying to arrange for them to have a wander around the venue because the way they look at light and different parts of the landscape is absolutely invaluable. Listening is one of the most important things you can do for the photography. The photographer is there to capture a moment in time for you and will not stop until they think they have got it. It is always so important to do your research on the photographer for this reason. They normally speak with you a few times and will always meet you face to face prior to the big day. So if you have things you are conscious of, and you would be surprised how many people do, tell your photographer and listen to the advice to help you feel at your most utterly gorgeous. After all, a picture really does speak a thousand words.

STAND UP STRAIGHT

We have all had that horrible stooping picture posted somewhere on social media, where the camera has added twenty pounds and you’ve got a multitude of chins, there is a Mr Magoo style piece of hair sticking up and your top is tucked into your pants at the most unflattering point on your tummy. So, stand up straight. For men, standing up straight gives a statue and strength to an image and for women it makes the most of your gorgeous figure, with your shoulders back enables you to look confident in yourself. 16

Spring 2021

HOLD YOUR BOUQUET TO THE SIDE

Whether it is a giant teardrop bouquet or a small posy, it always works best for your photographs if you pop this to one side. It gives a slightly more informal and relaxed look to the imagery. Have a look through stylised shoots on Pinterest and you will absolutely see that the proof is in the pudding on this one.

SMILE

Again, it is really simple, but if you smile the whole accent of the picture will change. Any photographer worth their own weight will get you chatting to each other and looking relaxed. A cheeky smile, a private smile, laughter and happiness written all over your face will enable him or her to get the absolute best out of any potential money shot. Our personal favourites here at Festival HQ are the relaxed, clowning around images, because these are the ones that bring to life the essence of who you are as a couple and smiling is key to that. What can I say, we love the love.

HAVE FUN

Have fun with it. There are no set rules to your photography and with each wedding day being as unique as the couple, just make sure that you feel confident enough in your photographer to have some fun. Just in case you are still stressing and are all out of ideas for what shots you want, we have put together a little checklist (we do love a good list) for you to consider when agreeing what you want. Remember, the more information that you can give the photographer the more likely you are to achieve everything you want photography wise on the day and those picture-perfect poses that will adorn your walls for years to come.

Are you having Kids? It’s the question that most couples get asked immediately after saying their vows, but what about the kids question for your special day? Features Editor Lara, talks all things pitter patter of tiny feet.

I had a pound for the amount of times people said to me after I got married for the second Iftime, ‘Will you be having more children now?’ I reckon I would have been rich by now. But the lesser considered question about kids, is about the actual wedding day. If children are a big part of you and your fiancée’s families then bringing them together to involved in your special day may be the only way you would choose to celebrate. Children love being included and involved and without a doubt they will make memories to last a lifetime on your big day. Children are no different to grown-ups, if we are uncomfortable, hungry, thirsty, hot, cold, bored, nervous or tired, things are probably not going to go well. So, our Festival’s 5 loves for the little people begins here.

LOVE DRESSING UP

Little ones do love to be a Princess or Prince for the day. Just make sure that they are comfortable in their ‘posh’ clothes. Maybe even give those shoes a run around the house to break then in before their debut outing.

LOVE TO EAT

Good food for children shouldn’t mean a compromise on quality, a reputable venue will be able to provide child friendly, nutritious and appealing meals that will ensure they have the energy to make it through a fun filled Spring 2021

LOVE TO BE ENTERTAINED

LOVE TO BE SPECIAL

But it is really important to remember, little humans need sleep and with a day full of fabulousness, a bean bag & fleecy blanket in a quiet area might mean their parents can continue to enjoy the party well into the evening on the best day of your life so far…

So many fabulous photographs of Granddad’s and Auntie’s, Brides & Grooms dancing with the most enthusiastic of partners, the little people who can throw shapes on the dance floor like you may never have seen before. Living in the moment and enjoying life to the full. Maybe they have a role, Bridesmaid, Flower Girl, Page Boy or Usher. Important enough to travel in style, carry rings or a bouquet and

Age-appropriate activities, a magician or piñata, an X box or a movie or simple crayons can provide hours of entertainment for those special little lovelies in your life.

Tips for the top table In this world of blended families, it is so hard to think about who goes where when you are doing your seating plan. Editor Rach, gives you her advice on how to help your guests be seated and happy.

we meet new couples, Lara and I always find that their biggest challenge in the W hen planning is the table plan. We all have those guests who cannot be seated together.

In fact, most couples find the seating plan the most stressful of all of the decisions to make. So, we thought we would put together the available options for you, to help you look at the easiest way to keep everyone laughing and calm during your wedding breakfast

Blooming Lovely Floristry is generally around 10% of your budget, but how do you know what shape is which? To celebrate Spring we have some gorgeous guidance on how to choose your bouquet shape.

you are a trained florist it is hard to understand about the shaping and composition U nless of bouquets. So, we have put together some imagery for you to help you understand

what you are asking for when speaking to your floral creative director.

ROUND

The circular or round bouquet is elegant and traditional, yet simplistic, designed in either a dense, tight cluster or loosely tied together for a gentle, airy boho feel. The styling works well with all dress shapes. Dependent on what types of flowers you use, the structure with fluctuate from piece to piece, for example, closed roses creating a tight more formal bouquet, whereas garden roses and fillers create that gentle, airyated feel. Because of the versatility of this shape, it can be small or fulsome and probably comes in at one of the most reasonable options for a bouquet.

PAGEANT

Sometimes known as the ‘arm sheath’ bouquet, the pageant arrangement consists of long foliage and stem flowers that are cradled in the arms of the holder. Whether

it is a modest few flowers, or fulsome bundle, this bouquet can often double as top table décor as it sits beautifully facing your guests. Popular choices for this style of bouquet include larkspur, delphiniums, lilies and long stem roses. Stems may be visible at one end or may be accompanied by ribbon to trail down, this pageant style is a superb style for a modern boho styled wedding.

CASCADE

Originally known as either the Teardrop or Shower bouquet, this shape is the most traditional, formal styling for a bouquet. Flowing downwards from the bride, the shape is designed to showcase the Spring 2021

27

height of sophistication. With a fulsome top curve of flowers that fall down to a gentle point, this style was massively popularised by royalty, with Princess Diana leading the way in her 1984 wedding to Prince Charles. Regal and traditional, the style suits any dress shape and really is the statement piece that it was designed to be.

NOSEGAY

With a name derived from 15th century culture, literally meaning an ornamental

décor. We absolutely love the orchids in this one.

POSY

One thing that most people don’t realise about wedding flowers is, actually, they are quite heavy. The Posy is the perfect way to keep the weight down on the florals being small in composition and able to be held in one hand. This is suitable for any type of flowers and can be loose and flowy, with ribbons trailing to get the illusion of height. Flowers that suit this style are gerberas, roses, peonies, ranunculus and tulips.

display for the nose, the Nosegay bouquet showcases tightly wound smaller bouquets, perfect for brides and bridesmaids alike. Do not get me wrong, the Nosegay can be as big as you like, but is characterised by the equal length, tightly wound stems, often wrapped in organza or ribbon. Traditionally, the Nosegay contains more greenery than florals and is a great cost-effective way to get a floral flow throughout your wedding day.

POMANDER

Suspended by a loop of decorative ribbon, the Pomander or ‘Kissing Ball’ as it is also known allows for tight knit flowers of the same style to be reasonable attached together to create a showstopper. Also a great style for those little flower girls and page boys, the pomander can flow through the day from bouquet to table 28

Spring 2021

Whatever shape and style you chose, make sure that you speak to your florist about the time of year, because flowers that have to imported can really pack a punch when it comes to blowing your budget. There really is no doubt that flowers make people smile and when you get the balance right, you really will look and feel blooming lovely.

The Musings of a Mother of the Bride

When we say that Festival is a family business, we absolutely mean it. Which is why we are delighted to welcome back Sheila Sims, retired English Teacher (and our Editor Rach’s Mum) to share her musings as a MOB.

been Mother of the Bride (MOB) three times, H aving memories with you. We have two daughters but have had three weddings where I was MOB as one off our girls got married, divorced and later got married again. Each wedding was delightful in its own special way, but each was so different too. I would say that to help make the day go well, it needs perfect planning. To use an old business motto, it’s the Five Ps (Perfect Planning Prevents Poor Performance). Fortunately, both our daughters are very organised and plan things to the letter, know exactly what they want and how to do it. Our first wedding was organised mainly by the bride, our younger daughter. She knew what she wanted and where it was to be. The first exciting thing was going out with her and her sister to choose her wedding gown. I was so thrilled to be included in the shopping trip, especially as it was my chequebook we would be using! It was so lovely to share in her excitement as she tried on the different dresses until she found the one, a beautiful cream satin and lace creation. We ordered it and got a date for delivery, so obviously we didn’t bring it home with us, but we did bring back her head-dress and veil. The next 30

Spring 2021

I’d like to share some of my

decision was the bridesmaids’ dresses. As it was a February wedding, she decided to have warm colours so chose a cerise satin dress for the grown-up bridesmaid (her sister) and cream with tiny cerise roses trimmed round the full skirts of the dresses for the two young ones (her fiancé’s young nieces). Then came the big choice of my outfit. I am a casual, jeans-and-tops type of person and I wanted something very different, so we went to several shops before I saw the perfect outfit for me – a long-skirted suit with a fitted jacket, in minty green with cream silky lapels, so I chose cream shoes, bag and hat. So, all outfits bought (oh yes, my husband ordered his suit as well - sorry, forgot about his clothes!), church booked, reception booked at Statham Lodge in Lymm, flowers ordered, invitations printed, cars organised, menus chosen, hairdressing appointments made and all the 1001 other things needing doing - all done. The day dawned grey and wet, unfortunately, but as it was an early afternoon wedding, there was a chance that it could improve – and it did. By the time we were leaving for the church, the clouds had cleared, and the sun was shining. I will never

forget that feeling as our daughter walked down the aisle, linking her dad and smiling happily. The tears came then for a few moments (thank goodness for waterproof mascara!) then pride and happiness took over and I was able to enjoy the ceremony. The reception was excellent, and the hot meal was very welcome as it was such a cold but sunny afternoon. Everyone enjoyed it very much and Statham Lodge did its usual grand job. My second MOB day came about three years later when our elder daughter got married. Again, meticulous attention to detail ensured everything ran smoothly. Our two daughters and I went into Chester to look for the gown and again it was so lovely and so exciting to see the bride-to-be trying on all these gorgeous gowns. Several dress shops later, she decided that the very first one she’d tried on was the one, so we went back there, she tried it on again and we ordered it. She didn’t want a veil but chose a very pretty head-dress which perfectly complemented the gown. As there were four bridesmaids this time (three grown-ups and one young one) we decided it was easier to have the three dresses made

32

Spring 2021

by a dressmaker we knew, and we bought the young bridesmaid’s dress (cream satin and chiffon) and had a sash made from the fabric of the older girls’ dress material. My outfit next and this time it was a summer wedding, so I wanted a dress rather than a suit and I got just what I wanted – a cream lace and chiffon dress, very MOB, with French navy shoes and bag and one of the biggest hats I’ve ever seen, also in French navy. I loved it all. The day was one of the hottest days of the year, with cloudless blue skies and brilliant sunshine. Again, as our daughter walked down the aisle with her dad, a few quick tears were shed (why do people always cry at weddings?) then that lovely feeling of pride and happiness took over. What made the day extra special was that my two sisters came over from Canada for the wedding, which was lovely. The reception at Statham Lodge was excellent and this time we had an afternoon sit-down wedding breakfast for about 90 guests with a further hundred or so more coming in the evening for a dance and supper. The main wedding party had all booked to stay at the hotel, so there was no problem for us with having to get home

afterwards. The next day we again had the gift opening at our house (no silver band this time though) and it was lovely to see the newly-weds opening all their fabulous wedding gifts before we took them to the airport for their flight to their honeymoon in Mexico. My third MOB day was about five years later when our younger daughter married again. We escaped the trawling of the dress shops, because her husband-to-be took her in a break with tradition and she had decided on a beautiful pale gold satin twopiece with a long swishy skirt and matching shaped bodice. No head-dress this time but beautifully curled long hair with some silk flowers woven in. This wedding day was divided in two, with a delicious meal at the Park Royal for the immediate family in the afternoon then in the evening a disco and supper at the golf club. What a delightful day that was too - and a few tears were shed once again! This time I wore a long animal-print dress with a matching stole. The following day we all congregated at the

newly-weds’ house for the gift opening, and it was lovely to watch them opening their gifts whilst we toasted them with champagne. To make it even more special, it was Bawming Day at Appleton Thorn and whilst they were unwrapping gifts, a silver band marched past the house playing for all they were worth. Magic! Would you believe I still have all three outfits, carefully wrapped in dress-bags in the hope that they will become vintage clothes one day - and they all still fit me too! So, as you can see from all this, our daughters’ wedding days have been wonderful and totally enjoyable. The memories of each day are held dearly and that feeling of pride and happiness will be with me for ever more. My only advice to any parents whose children is getting married is to sit back and enjoy it. It is easy to let the day run away with you, so taking a second to look at the happiness on the face of the wonderful human being you created is a must. After all, all we want for our treasured children is love, happiness and the occasional joyous day to share. Spring 2021

Forever Flowers Firm Festival Fave Emma, from Event Cheshire, is here to talk all things silk when it comes to your florals.

for florals has never been more apparent than now with the both the high O urstreetpassion fashion trends and home interior styling awash with big bold greenery prints, boho

dried floral arrangements, pampas grass, festive blooms and lashings of eucalyptus stems everywhere. In this floral fantasia world bigger is most definitely better with no Instagram account complete without the perfect flower wall pose. With this trend for theatrical lifestyle dressing showing no signs of disappearing anytime soon it is understandable that for most couples on their big day florals will play a big role in their styling of the day. Flowers not only provide the perfect backdrop for your photography, but they also add beauty and sophistication to the entire wedding party’s look that is unrivalled. No wedding would be complete without them- with most people

agreeing that flowers provide one of the most beautiful, colourful and atmospheric parts of a wedding. But does this fever for floral extravaganza mean that it should be a significant consideration for the wedding budget too or is it really possible to provide that Pinterest worthy wedding for less? As a designer of artificial wedding flowers – I would scream absolutely! With the average UK total wedding costing an eye watering £30,000 and floristry expecting to consume at least

10% of this figure it is understandable that couples are trying to look for nifty ways to reduce costs but without reducing the impact and enjoyment of the day. This has been strongly shown in the increase in demand for artificial floristry, which is becoming increasingly popular as a beautiful, long-lasting, and often cheaper, alternative to fresh wedding flowers. Now if the idea of using artificial floristry fills you with preconceptions of “tacky” fake flowers sourced from discount stores you need to think again! Today’s forever bloom flower designs are so realistic that the most common question I get asked is “are they real” followed by “how do I place an order”? There are many benefits to using artificial blooms of your big day • They have a variety of uses and can be used to make stunning floral garlands, centrepieces, staircase garlands, bridal party floral suites and big bold design structures • They aren’t time sensitive or weather conscious – these can be made months in advance and will still look just as beautiful as the day they were created.

for destination weddings. • They can be cheaper than fresh flowers. It is always worth sourcing reputable retailers who provide quality products! • They are a DIY bride and groom’s best friend! If you love to craft and create artificial flowers provide you with an opportunity to really get involved in creating a truly personalised day • They are allergy friendly – no one wants to see hay fever sufferers with streaming eyes and noses on their big day! • You can precisely colour-match artificial flowers to any shade so they can work with your colour palette • They don’t attract wasps or bugs, so you don’t need to worry if you’re having an outdoor wedding!!! • If you get good quality flowers, then your guests may not even notice you’re not using fresh flowers! • If you aren’t sentimental and are looking at recouping costs they can be reused or sold.

• They are always be in peak bloom and perfect quality - no droopy daisies on my watch!

Undeniably, there is no substitute for the smell of real flowers on your wedding day although I have heard of brides spritzing their forever blooms with their favourite perfume (not a bad idea) or using candles to create scent, but the significant benefits for using artificial cannot be ignored.

• They won’t wilt or die so not only will they look perfect on your big day, but they can be kept forever as cherished memento! • Artificial flowers travel well, so if you are considering an elopement they are ideal

My advice is to find a professional floral artist who specialises in working with artificial flowers, who understands your vision for your big day and sit back and watch your wedding day love forever bloom.

• They aren’t seasonal - you can get exactly your choice of flower variety regardless of your wedding date. Hello winter peony!

Get Decisive

If you’re getting married in the 2020’s but don’t have a wedding dress, Fashion Editor Sara tells you why now is the time to get decisive

resulting isolation hit just as the window for brides shopping for September T heandpandemic’s October 2020 events was beginning to close. The Bridal Lounge advises brides

to shop ideally 12 months prior to your wedding date, with the plan to place an order for your gown no later than eight months in advance. Naturally, that timeline can be flexible as occasionally our designers can rush deliver, hold stock or a bride may choose a sample gown. Custom gowns and bespoke changes require more time, given the amount of choice and decisions to be made, any boutique would need even more time that 8 months to deliver on a bride’s expectation. We have been working since January by offering virtual appointments and our “try on at home” service. Brides have been delighted to have the opportunity to get themselves back into “wedding mode” by talking through all the elements of their day and plans. Family and friends have been able to join them and be supportive, it’s been great fun. We have been delivering gowns to brides to try on at home and despite some reservations, it’s been a huge relief for brides. We have had some amazing feedback and so many more brides now have gorgeous dresses in plenty of time for their big day. It’s likely this service will continue long after covid, especially taking into account those brides with any sort of disabilities who ordinarily just wouldn’t be comfortable visiting a boutique. Given that we now have a re-opening date of the 12th April, now is the time to do your research and get decisive—this newfound confinement proving more useful than it seems for those still undecided on a gown. Use the personal space, opportunity to reflect,

42

Spring 2021

and honesty with yourself to decide what you’re really looking for in a wedding gown. Ask yourself whose opinions truly matters in the process and whose opinion matters most (spoiler alert: It’s yours). Editing down your entourage is a forever tip when it comes to avoiding indecision in the wedding shopping process, but in the age of social distancing, it’s a safety precaution as well. Think of a time when you dressed up and felt your absolute best, dissect why, and apply those notes to this monumental shopping process. Be open to the idea that what you love in bridal might be a departure from your style norms; be open to the idea that your decision of what to wear down the aisle could be totally predictable. Stop playing devil’s advocate. Stop asking everyone you know, just met, or are soon to be related to for an opinion. Trust your gut. That self-assurance is going to serve you well once you get into a boutique to find the one. Choose wisely where you visit and contact

them before making an appointment and ensure they have what is on your shortlist and perhaps more importantly in your budget. We have been receiving so many emails with images and ideas from brides and we are more than happy to check what a bride is looking for is with us. Whatever you do, don’t be a busy fool. You simply don’t have the time. Choosing a simpler gown may also be the solution, there has been a boom on our end— even before the pandemic outbreak—of simpler gowns that are high style. Dresses that focus on dramatic details, draping, structure, interesting necklines and silhouettes, but that are less focused on beading, lace, and embroideries that those gowns could be worth considering for a quick turnaround, given that most of the embroideries and laces needed for more elaborate styles are sourced from abroad. That simpler look doesn’t necessarily mean that “simple.” One thing is for sure: Decisive women are going to win the day when it comes to wedding dress shopping in the months ahead. Gone are the days of trying on 80-plus wedding dresses before you land the one, as is visiting and revisiting your top choices again and again—only to go home and marinate on your decision one last time. Do a proper gut check about what you’re looking for style-wise, what you like and don’t like, and which brands you’re after. Becoming a bride is such a memorable life moment that it is important to select a dress that has [one] looking and feeling like your very best self. I think this sentiment holds true for now and the future. Spring 2021

ACCESSORIES

Make a statement Our beautiful Accessories Editor, Steph, is here to talk about all things glitz, glamour and fabulous dahhling

we edge closer to a new era of post-pandemic normality, we’re all feeling ready for A ssomething new. The last year changed our daily lives in so many ways and caused us to

see things differently. The world of fashion is no different, and post-pandemic style will be heavily influenced by our newly heightened desire to be ourselves; enabling us to step aside from apparent norms in order to reflect something of our own individuality. Bridal fashion trends are opening up opportunities for brides to do something different, and accessories are a perfect way to inject a personal style statement into your bridal look. We’ll take a look at some of the creative ways you could achieve this.

DECADENCE If you want your jewellery to be noticed, a statement earring is the perfect choice. Dazzling crystals exude opulence and decadence, and a bold sculptural design creates maximum impact.

A timeless

favourite with our brides at Loved & Luxe is the Dorchester (£75); their cascading crystals add true vintage glamour to your look, with maximum impact. Alternatively, opt for a statement in colour with the Sheena Earrings. This chandelier style exudes luxury and opulence with its richly coloured stones (£59).

OVERSIZED PIECES

58

Spring 2021

Whether it’s a Hermes shopper or Gucci sunglasses, oversized accessories are always sure to make a statement. Not for the feinthearted, these styles suit big personalities, and give a stylish reflection of that confidence. The Gatsby Pearl Earrings by Latelita (£195) do this so elegantly; statement hoops formed of cubic zirconia-trimmed pearls. Alternatively, show the fire inside you with the Flame Hoop Earrings by Latelita (£129);

swirling cubic zirconia flames encircle the lobe in dramatic hoops. Both styles are available at Loved & Luxe.

A FRESH TAKE ON PEARLS

Pearls have long since been a traditional choice for brides. However, there is now

so much more variety in the styles available, making it easy for brides to find a fresh take on this tradition. Stack up opulent layers of pearls like Coco Chanel to make your accessories do the talking. Paired with a minimal dress, this juxtaposing combination will have maximum impact. Alternatively, chose baroque pearls for a look which is truly bespoke. The irregular shape of baroque pearls is the key to their beauty, meaning that no two pearls, and no two pieces will be exactly the same. They celebrate imperfection and individuality, making the statement that we do not all need to be the same to be beautiful; they are the perfect choice for a stylish bride wishing to make a statement. Their irregular shape also enhances their lustre, providing a myriad of additional facets to refract the light in different directions and accentuate Spring 2021

tradition and modernity in her designs, she is heavily influenced by her Mediterranean heritage and the principles of ethical design. Her pieces radiate wanderlust, a zest for life and a passion for the natural world. The Helesys Gold Bird Pendant is perhaps one of her most dramatic examples of this and is perfect for a summer bride looking to be true to her own nature. Loved & Luxe is proud to launch their Joanna Cave Collection in March 2021. So, however you want to make your statement, let us help you to select the most beautifully meaningful jewellery, just for you; book a personal virtual consultation at https://www.lovedandluxe.co.uk/book-aconsultation-25-w.asp. its colour. The brand new Hermania pieces by Shyla are stunning examples of this, demonstrating individuality and blending a bohemian vibe with classic style. Let a simple string of baroque pearls do the talking, and hint at all of your many unique facets. The Hermania is available in a Necklace and a Bracelet, at Loved & Luxe. (Necklace: £79, bracelet: £69.)

SYMBOLIC IMAGERY

Bridal jewellery has always been decorative, but many more brides are now looking for their jewellery to also carry some symbolism for their big day. Jewellery which carries meaning has the ability to transform the wearer, which is an important principle for jewellery designer Joanna Cave. Revered in the industry and in the press for blending 60

Iridescently Irresistible Festival Fabulousness A warm welcome to guest writer Nathalie Selvon-Bruce, who delightfully presents a Festival-style wonderful shoot that she recently completed with a fabulous array of suppliers. iridescently irresistible, festival inspired shoot, located at Henhaw Farm in Surrey, A ndesigned with festival opulence in mind. This styled shoot brings jaw-dropping views across the countryside with a team of five awesome models and outfits that scream festival vibes. Who would have thought a glittery catsuit from Tirade13 and immaculate corset by Powdered and Waisted Corsetry would be a match made in heaven, finished with a bright, sequin L.O.M Fashion kimono?

Spring 2021

The tulle skirts from Matchimony complemented the style, bringing a fierce and formidable wardrobe to the occasion. No high heels in site – we needed boots and trainers – to keep the dance moves going well into the night. The VW Beetle in one of a fleet of classic VW’s available to hire for festival events and weddings by Buttercup Bus. The Beetle was set up as an eco-glitter bar (Glitter Bug) and comes with the option for a handheld mirror photobooth and instant prints hidden in the bonnet next to the sign displayed by Ophelia London. The glitter bar comes complete with a neon glitter sign and array of funky props from fluffy stools to pink doughnut cushions and glittery balls… Ahem, and let’s not forget that disco helmet. Yes, each mirror tile was hand grouted onto the moped helmet, creating a dome of reflective light, cascading across the scene from the roof of the beetle. If you are going to make an entrance, then this is the ultimate accessory.

The festival vibe was set off, with an array of bright smoke bombs, and the video by talented Jacob Cameron Hill perfectly caught the drama of the drummer tapping the beat, and ricocheting glitter off the drum surface, whilst sporting a hand-crafted burning man cap and embellished funky sunglasses. The music selection for the video is genius.

CLICK FOR VIDEO It was the little details that really brought the shoot together – from the iridescent balloons blowing in the wind, to the sequin backdrop wall provided by Pumpkin Patch Parties, and there was a gentle breeze that caught a rainbow of ribbons to add drama to the images. Victoria Chainey artfully prepared the models (the fantastic five!), bringing hairstyles and makeup together to complement the loud wardrobe, and supporting Buttercup Bus with applying the glitter. She also had some Spring 2021

eyelashes that made sure that the loud props did not overpower the model’s eyes. Despite the images being styled for this shoot, it was easy to relax and feel like we were actually attending a festival wedding, as Tony Pullen rocked his photography skills, making everyone feel energised, working in perfect synchronisation with the videographer. Models Aleesha, Ell, Ellie, Kate and Amie showcased their incredible modelling skills,

bringing glamorous energy, party vibes and killer poses to showcase all the features of the shoot – they worked brilliantly as a team, but also held their own for the close-up shots. REAL WEDDINGS

Minimise is NOT a compromise as Marcquelle & Catherine’s wedding shows… We would like to extend a very warm Festival welcome to Jaine Briscoe-Price, who is not only an immensely talented photographer, but has also turned her motivational hand to writing about the c-word weddings. Jaine has proved that you can have dream photography within government guidelines. So to you, Bojo, we say pfffffft

I first met Catherine and her partner Marcquelle, at Thornton Manor’s monthly W hen open evening in early January 2020, the rapport was instantaneous. Photographers will

know what I mean when you meet a potential Bride & Groom and know “they are your couple – I want THAT wedding”… a bit like love at first sight. They’d recently had an adorable baby girl Ava, so Catherine was trying to juggle being a Mom, planning a wedding, working as a schoolteacher and keeping the vivacious, enthusiastic actor/ performer Marcquelle’s feet firmly on the ground.

With only 5 months before the BIG day, plans were made for their pre-wedding shoot… a great way to get them used to my simple, effective direction which ensures great, no fuss imagery on their wedding day.

They hadn’t even been able to see the preshoot images….but we remained in close contact, with positive re-enforcement that everything will be fine on the new date in September.

The shoot in Manchester was the day before lockdown; Castlefields was deserted… it was eerie, like a ghost-town in a movie, however we had lots of fun creating great imagery which perfectly captured their personalities. We excitedly chatted all things wedding and agreed a loose timeframe of how their day would flow at the Dell Pavilion at Thornton Manor on 9th May 2020.

Catherine wasn’t able to arrange bridal fittings for her beautiful backless wedding dress, whilst dropping baby weight at an enviable rate. Food wasn’t tasted, flowers only provisionally ordered via picture format and of course, the invitations couldn’t be sent out just yet. A really flat time for them both. So, what did they do… Oh they threw a house move into the mix!

This was going to be a wonderful wedding ahead of a really busy season. Wooahh.. then the rug was taken from under our feet, the wedding in question; will it, won’t it, until a disappointed phone call agreed postponement until 12th September 2020, which seemed ages away.

Weeks turned into months and eventually it looked like another postponement was imminent….yet not once did this gorgeous, hopelessly in love couple lose their enthusiasm; in their words, they love each other, they will marry each other even if it was just the two of them in attendance and they could have a party anytime. Fortunately, just in the nick of time, weddings could total 30 guests again for their revised date, and with an outdoor ceremony and reception, we only had the British weather to worry about. Getting that huge guest list down became pretty easy for the couple; no-one was offended, a few preferred to stay away and separated parents were perfectly polite with each other (I guess social bubbles keep people at a distance anyway), hair and make-up became a bridesmaid’s task, the cake became two tiers from three, but nothing was compromised. Meanwhile I’d fallen on location and damaged my shoulder badly (requiring an operation which is delayed because of… you guessed it, Covid), but I wasn’t going to miss out on this gorgeous wedding, so the hospital gave me an additional cortisone injection in my shoulder on the way to the wedding – Phew. The atmosphere was amazing, there was nothing different apart from a few less people nipping in and out (a blessing in my opinion),

74

Spring 2021

the shots of the girls who’d been isolating together to reach this point were fun and relaxed, Catherine looked amazing, wearing the dress of her dreams, the lads were super sharp, suited n booted, the immediate families were great fun and easy to capture using a long lens as they were in their natural bubbles and Marcquelle, what can I say, he was like a kid on Christmas day…. A bouncing tigger with a huge beaming smile. I’d vowed not to make this a masked, “Covid” wedding as their Italian album will be there to show daughter Ava in 25 years’ time when she gets married and Covid is (hopefully) a word we never hear, so everyone was seated sensibly distanced through the outdoor ceremony which carried such light-hearted emotion; there was a tear in my eye for sure. The large lawns adjoining the beautiful Monet style lakes were perfect for the relaxed social reception, where families were able to walk and talk freely whilst socially distanced, before a few group and fun shots, enthusiastically embraced by the lovely wedding party.

Evening receptions were still not allowed, though you would never know it, so they’d cut down on table arrangements and dressing of the marquee, therefore I suggested we capture their first dance more intimately at one of the hidden treasures within Thornton Manors grounds. Off they went practicing this beautiful, choreographed dance whilst Ian, my associate photographer, and I clicked away without the couple’s knowledge. These powerful, intimate images were the perfect ending to a happy, relaxed, minimised but not compromised wedding day. And the party – hey I’m waiting for the invitation and yes, I will have my camera in one hand, but there’ll be a glass of fizz in the other.

Words from e ell u q c ar M d an e in Cather Our outlook in life has always been ‘everything happens for a reason’ and we certainly had to hold on to this faith last year... Before we even knew of a Covid virus, we had visited a handful of potential venues, but nothing had even come close to Thornton Manor! From the personal tour of the grounds with Georgie, we knew that it had to be that venue!!! We were sure that we wanted to marry in May 2020 and when we saw that the calendar was free on my birthday, we jumped at the chance and quickly booked that date. A couple of months passed, and we were invited to Thornton Manor’s wedding open

80

Spring 2021

evening which is where we first met the ridiculously talented Jaine. We spent ages awing over her fabulous albums and walked away knowing that we had a very talented lady photographing our wedding. Fast forward February 2020 and there were murmurs that our wedding may have to be postponed. We ignored them and kept planning with our eyes on the prize but when it did become a reality, we set a new date in September. We were given a choice, but the 12th stood out and we felt like that was the new perfect date for us! The first call we made was to Jaine! With all fingers and toes crossed we held our breathe to hear whether Jaine was actually available to photograph the new date. We were in luck! Phew!! At this time, no one knew quite

how long things would go on for! I remember Jaine saying how perfect the weather would be on our new date and as we planned an outdoor ceremony the weather needed to be on our side! The build-up to the wedding should have been stressful and an upsetting time but it wasn’t for us! There was one thing that we were clear on and that was that we would get married on 12th September 2020. One postponement was enough for us. We had the most memorable pre-lockdown photoshoot with Jaine. It was a welcomed sprinkle of positivity and fun with lots of giggles in a time when the world was starting to shut down around us as we went into a National lockdown. As our initial wedding day came and went, we slowly watched the summer months go by without much change in weddings. At this point we had one wish, to be allowed 30

guests so that our closest loved ones could be there and to have a Reception so that we could celebrate our day to some degree. Just before our wedding, beauty salons in Manchester were allowed to open so I was able to get my pre-wedding beauty treatments, visit the hairdresser for a muchneeded colour and was lucky to have a talented hairdresser within my bridal party to make me look glamorous on the day. We also met with Fabulous Georgie via Zoom on the Sunday before the wedding (which was her day off) to discuss all things venue. We were starting to get very excited! Our wish came true and to us the day itself was just perfect in every single way! We had the most gorgeous weather and had 30 guests, which in the grand scheme of things, was an ample amount in the current climate. We zoomed our wedding to all of our friends and family who couldn’t be there and there was a real air of appreciation for finally having our Spring 2021

dream day! We definitely spent the day in a fabulous bubble of contentment; it was such a special day. Every guest shared beaming smiles and we felt such magic in the air that day. It was only a couple of weeks later that the guest count fell again so we were even more appreciative of what had been our postponed wedding date. Following on from our day, we masked the post wedding blues with a fabulous champagne afternoon tea viewing arranged by Jaine, while we selected our photographs

for the album. We were absolutely blown away by the imagery that Jaine and her coworker had captured! Every photograph taken of our day was just wow. And now as couples continue to postpone weddings, we remain eternally grateful for the truly amazing day that we both had. We are so appreciative of all of the people who went above and beyond to help us to have the wedding of our dreams. We started 2021 as Mr and Mrs Ward and can’t wait to see what the future holds...

REAL WEDDINGS

The Secret Proposal at Walton Hall Here at Festival HQ, you will often see us looking wistfully out of the window saying we love the love. Features Editor Lara talks us through the most romantic of notions, the secret proposal

and I it all began on a Tuesday afternoon in October 2020 when we received F oran Rach e mail from Jon. He told us he was going to propose to his girlfriend at the end of

November and wanted our help to realise his vision of this most special moment. Based in the South for our Military and with only one weekend in November when he would next be in Warrington, we were thrilled to be invited to be a part of something so romantic. For all who know us you know - we love the love.

We arrange for Jon to send us his visual ideas, an abundance of fairy lighting draped in woodlands. He explained that their first date had been at Walton Gardens and that was the natural choice for him to get down on one knee and pop the question. We scheduled a Zoom meeting to chat some more. We chatted though what Jon wanted us to arrange for him - fairy lights, music, florals, a photographer to capture the moment, hot chocolates and of course for his intended to say yes. With everything arrange and some additional flourishes we sent Jon his brief, and on a chilly weekend in November 2020 everything fell beautifully into place.

JONS BRIEF

Hope you are well, Rach and I have finalised the details for Saturday, please find everything you need know below:

If you can plan to arrive at The Gardens for 2.30pm and make your way to The Heritage Cafe area for 2.45pm, Rach will be there with Gareth, your photographer, and under the guise that they are taking promotional shots of the gardens and guests, they will ask you if you mind being in some of their pictures. This will be the start of your album. We have attached a map of the gardens and planned a route for you to enable Gareth to be back up at the bandstand for your arrival. 3.00pm You arrive at the bandstand, where you will hear Justin Bieber playing 10,000 Hrs. The bandstand will be lit and inside will be a leather sofa with Hygge fur throws and cushions. 100 Tea lights and decorative florals and garlands in pink and blue and the signage you commissioned (and can take away with you). Following the proposal, and Amy saying yes,

we will light up the letters Y E S which will be displayed in the bay window of Walton Hall. Sat on a wicker basketball be a selection of sweet treats for you to enjoy along with 2 mugs and a chocolate bomb each, add the chocolate bomb to the mug and add hot milk, which will also be provided. Gareth will be snapping away all of the time for you and when you are ready you can wander around The Gardens and take more pictures (we estimate that by 4pm we will lose natural light). Whilst you are roaming the gardens we will remove the sofa from the bandstand in order that you can return for more pictures with only the fairy lighting. Sneak peak of the shoot will be available within 24hrs in order that you and Amy can enjoy looking at them together before you have to return to work, the remaining album will be sent to you within 2 weeks. If you have any questions please contact us. We are really looking forward to being a part of this special moment in your lives as are the team at the Hall.

Being part of the love is what all of our suppliers’ love. We had some of our gorgeous wedding family involved with this surprise proposal. Gareth Roy Photography was the sneaky photographer, Natalie from Glamour Booth Events provided the lit letters, Scott from Hipswing, the lighting in the Bandstand, Zachary Jaxon Events provided the gorgeous treats in the wicker basket and Jane from Confetti & Crumbs made some beautiful chocolate bombs and of course Lara and I made the fabulous venue, Walton Hall & Gardens Bandstand, look quite simply stunning. Having been inside for so much time, it was wonderful to get out and do what we do best. Couples were walking past asking what we were doing and there were some very sore arms from women giving their partners a little dig about surprise proposing to them. Small bubble of crowds gathered as Jon and Amy came round the corner, to her favourite song and there were applause and tears all round. But the most important thing of note for the day, she said yes! We can’t wait to do the wedding now. Bring it on.

Mineral Sun Care By Tropic Our very own Lara talks safety in the sunshine

of mineral sun care, now with an improved super smooth texture is everything O uryourange need to provide piece of mind in the run up to and on your Wedding Day.

Chemical and mineral sunscreens both effectively protect against UV rays, but in slightly different ways. Mineral sun filters are not absorbed into the skin; instead, they sit in its surface and reflect UV rays away. Due to this process of reflecting rather than converting UV rays, mineral sunscreens are generally a better option for those with supersensitive skin. Our sun care products bear the Protect Land + Sea Logo this demonstrates that the formulations have gone through rigorous tests to ensure that they are entirely reef-safe posing no threat to the environment. 100
