It’s been a vibrant August brimming with culture with the festivals back to full strength, but fear not, the autumn still holds a host of entertainment at Capital Theatres. This season we’ve got glamorous musicals, captivating comedy, classic drama and astonishing dance; not to mention some fun-filled treats for our younger audiences. We’re also delighted to be welcoming back the Edinburgh Gang Show to their temporary home at the Festival Theatre while The King’s undergoes its transformational redevelopment. We’re super excited to see Rona Munro’s thrilling new chapter of Scottish history, James IV – Queen of the Fight, on the Festival stage. We’re co-producing this epic piece of event theatre with Raw Material, in association with National Theatre of Scotland. Whether you’re a connoisseur of The James Plays or new to their world of intrigue and drama, this is a landmark piece of theatre not to be missed.

James IV– Queen of The Fight Fri 3O September to Sat 8 October Evenings 7.30pm (excl. Sun) Matinees Thu 6 & Sat 8, 2.30pm

Ellen and Anne, two Moorish women who were expected to take their place at a royal court…but not this one. Both women now have to fight to find and keep a place in the dazzling, dangerous world of the Scottish Court of James IV. It’s a world where war is never far away, words of love and promises of peace are not what they seem and where poets might turn out to be more dangerous than any assassin.

Blythe Duff (Taggart, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) and Daniel Cahill (River City) are returning to the James Plays following their roles in James I, II and III, and are joined by Danielle Jam (Molly and Mack) as Ellen, and Laura Lovemore (Queen of the New Year) as Anne.

Scotland, 1504, seen fresh through the eyes of new arrivals

“A feast of blistering emotion and theatrical might”

Employing the same wit and theatricality of the first three James Plays, acclaimed playwright Rona Munro takes you back to a thrilling and uncharted period of Scottish history in this brand-new production. Join us on the journey.

Military hero Colonel Fairfax is imprisoned in the Tower of London and sentenced to death for treason. Appalled by Fairfax’s fate, Sergeant Meryll is determined to free the man who rescued him in battle. Meryll and his accomplices concoct a chaotic and dangerous scheme to free Fairfax while daughter Phoebe yearns to marry the imprisoned solider. The plan is a stroke of genius, but only if it succeeds...

Sullivan’s sumptuous melodies combined with Gilbert’s darker libretto make for a tragicomic opera widely regarded as a masterpiece and one of the duo’s finest works.

Ainadamar brilliantly reimagines the life and works of poet and playwright Federico García Lorca, whose anti-fascist stance and open homosexuality led to his death in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. Love, loss, and death emerge through the memories of Margarita Xirgu (Lauren Fagan), muse and friend of Lorca (Samantha Hankey). As Margarita tells their story to her student Nuria (Julieth Lozano), Ainadamar becomes a modern passion play, reflecting on his life and works. Olivier Award-winning choreographer and director Deborah Colker makes her hotly anticipated opera directorial debut. A co-production with Opera Ventures (Breaking the Waves 2019, Greek 2017).

Sung in Spanish with English supertitles

In this UK staged premiere, Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov creates a vibrant, poetic sound world combining opera with flamenco dance and song.
