Inés de Castro is the Spanish mistress to Pedro, the Crown Prince of Portugal. As anti-Spanish sentiment begins to rise, the King of Portugal prepares to banish Inés for the good of the State, but his scheming advisor Pacheco has more extreme measures in mind. When war erupts, Pedro leaves to lead his men into battle.

Abandoned by her lover and surrounded by enemies, Inés falls into a nightmare of political intrigue, where much more than her position is at stake.

MacMillan’s music is rooted in the oldest of operatic traditions but looks at it all with fresh eyes in a unique, visceral experience that has all the grandeur of Verdi. Performing Arts Studio Scotland (PASS) at Edinburgh College invite dance enthusiasts to their end-of-year production. Opera at its grandest, Verdi’s Il trovatore hasn’t been seen on the Scottish Opera stage since 2001. Dark and menacing, Peter Watson’s production gives this monumental story the space it deserves, providing a majestic backdrop for a cast and chorus of over 50.

A gypsy woman is discovered in the castle of the Count di Luna, crouched over the cradle of his youngest son. When the boy falls ill, she is burned at the stake for witchcraft. Her daughter, crazed with grief, snatches the child intending to kill him, but in her madness, throws her own son onto the fire. Years later, she has brought the Count’s son up as her own and he and his elder brother, unaware of their relationship, are rivals for the beautiful Leonora. Jealousy, revenge, love and hate collide as the opera crashes towards its inexorable conclusion.

Verdi’s score is packed with a dizzying succession of full-blooded melodies, from the thrilling Anvil Chorus and Manrico’s stirring ‘Di quella pira’ to the spine-tingling Miserere.

Questions over the neutrality of both Ireland and of the West household are raised when Rima invites three soldiers - Alec, an English officer; Marco and Jamie, two US troopers from the war zone just across the nearby Eire / UK border. Soon clashes of loyalty, jealousy, sexual identity and love creep in.

Disguise and revelation, love and jealousy combine in this tragic tale. A love story unfolds against the ghostly backdrop of a Rhineland forest haunted by the fearful presence of the “Wilis” - vengeful spirits of abandoned brides. The beautiful peasant girl, Giselle, falls for Albrecht who conceals his identity to win her. The discovery of her lover’s deception shatters Giselle’s innocence and causes her to die of a broken heart. Albrecht is thrown into the hands of the merciless Wilis, but Giselle cannot bear to watch him die and returns as a ghost to save him.

Giselle is the most dramatic and beautiful of ballets and the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s superb dancers make it a must-see of 2015.

A chance for you hear about the Company and to see first-hand what life as a dancer is like as you watch the dancers daily class. A 30-minute talk about the company, the production and the touring life of a dance company is followed by the chance to watch the dancers take their daily ballet class on stage.

Led by the One Man, Two Guvnors resident director, this exclusive workshop will explore the rehearsal process, focusing on text and character analysis, acting techniques and staging.
