Dear Participants, dear Visitors, I am delighted that our city, Miskolc has the honour to host the Jenő Hubay Violin Competition. A pivotal site of the town’s musical education is the Béla Bartók Music Faculty of the University of Miskolc, where musical training is performed by accomplished academics at a very high standard. Miskolc takes pride in a colourful life of culture and art, enriched by the Jenő Hubay Violin Competition. This contest occupies a prominent place among music competitions, as it provides the youngest generation of violinists with the opportunity to showcase their talent and skills. I find it very important to organize events are held that focus on our youth, facilitating them to rise higher and perform in an international context. It is what the Jenő Hubay Violin Competition achieves, which can be regarded as the doorway to the Ilona Fehér International Violin Competition. The standard of the contest becomes even higher thanks to the participation of Hungarian and international contestants coming from the Visegrad Four and other neighbouring countries. The competition’s high quality, reputation, and renown are warranted by the internationally acclaimed violinists and violin teachers from Central-Eastern Europe. I sincerely hope that the Jenő Hubay Violin Competition will be one of the main events of Miskolc’ culture and a jewel among the events held at the Béla Bartók Music Faculty at the University of Miskolc. Tisztelt Résztvevők, kedves Érdeklődők! Nagy örömömre szolgál, hogy Miskolc ad otthont a Hubay Jenő Hegedűversenynek. A város zenei oktatásának meghatározó színhelye a Miskolci Egyetem Bartók Béla Zeneművészeti Kara, ahol magas színvonalon kiváló oktatók segítségével történik a felsőfokú zeneművészeti oktatás. A város sokszínű kulturális és művészeti élettel rendelkezik, amit a Hubay Jenő Hegedűverseny tovább színesít. A verseny azért is kiemelkedő a zenei tematikájú események sorából, mivel a legfiatalabb hegedűművész generáció számára nyújt lehetőséget arra, hogy megmutassák tudásukat, tehetségüket. Rendkívül fontosnak tartom, hogy létrejöjjenek olyan események, amelyek a fiatalokat célozzák meg és számukra biztosítják a felemelkedés, a nemzetközi szereplés lehetőségét, ahogy teszi ezt a Hubay Jenő Hegedűverseny is, hiszen az esemény a Fehér Ilona Nemzetközi Hegedűverseny előszobájának tekinthető. A verseny nívóját tovább emeli, hogy nem csupán hazai, hanem a Visegrádi Négyek országai, valamint a szomszédos országok fiatal hegedűművészei számára is biztosítja a részvétel és a megmérettetés lehetőségét. A verseny színvonalát a térség országaiból érkező rangos hegedűművészek és hegedűtanárok garantálják, ezzel is emelve az esemény hírnevét, ismertségét. Dear members of the jury, dear participants, dear teachers and guardians! Welcome to the Jenő Hubay Competition!

It is a particular source of joy and honour that the city of Miskolc hosts this year’s contest; moreover, at a venue that is linked by many threads to Hubay’s life and work. We are confident that this competition means a great opportunity to the young and gifted musicians both in Hungary and our neighbouring countries, and not only regarding the enhancement of their careers. All finalists of the Hubay Competition are – as a matter of course – invited to the Ilona Fehér International Violin Competition, held for the 4th time next year. We wish all participants a fantastic time and brilliant performances.

With the conception of this competition, we aimed to search for and foster young violinists from CentralEastern Europe under the age of 20 and facilitate an opportunity for them to present themselves to the world. Our personal history and development path prove that young students of music ought to experience the magic of live concerts, encounters and competition before a renowned international jury. The isolation imposed on us by the pandemic has only reinforced this conviction: a contest requires a physical presence; nothing else can make up for the experience made in this way. It is the only way the participants can connect and see where they are on the miraculous journey of learning and improving. It is how they can receive provision for a lifetime from highly experienced and accomplished members of an international jury.

A versenyt azzal a céllal hívtunk életre, hogy felkutassuk, felkaroljuk és bemutatkozási lehetőséget biztosítsunk minden húszévesnél fiatalabb, közép-kelet-európai hegedűs számára. Saját élményeink és tapasztalataink is azt mutatják: minden zenét tanuló fiatalnak fontos megismernie az élő koncert, a találkozás, valamint egy nemzetközi szakmai zsűri előtti megmérettetés élményét, varázsát. A pandémia miatti bezártság csak megerősített bennünket: a versenyt személyes részvétellel kell megrendezni, az így szerzett tapasztalatokat nem helyettesítheti más. Így ismerhetik meg egymást igazán a versenyzők, így láthatják és közvetlenül érzékelhetik: hol tartanak a tanulás, fejlődés csodálatos útján, így kaphatnak valóban életre szóló tanácsokat a hatalmas tapasztalattal és tudással rendelkező nemzetközi zsűri tagjaitól. Külön öröm és megtiszteltetés számunkra, hogy az idei eseménynek Miskolc városa ad otthont, ráadásul azon a helyen, mely több szállal kapcsolódik Hubay munkásságához. Biztosak vagyunk abban, hogy a hazai és a környező országok fiatal tehetségeinek is nagy lehetőség ez a verseny, és nem csupán a további szakmai fejlődéshez és kiteljesedéshez, hiszen a jövőre immár 4. alkalommal megrendezendő Fehér Ilona Nemzetközi Hegedűversenyre minden Hubaydöntős automatikusan meghívást kap. Fantasztikus élményeket, színvonalas versenyzést kívánunk minden résztvevőnek!

I warmly welcome you to the Béla Bartók Music Faculty of the University of Miskolc. The impressive Music Palace in the city centre hosts our school, a building, which has been serving the cause of musical education for nearly a century. Our institution has played a significant role in the music scene of the city and entire region for decades, sending forth young music teachers, orchestra and solo musicians to begin their careers. Our former students live and work all over Hungary and beyond. We are just about to launch a highly prominent event. It is the first time the International Jenő Hubay Violin Competition will take place in Miskolc. We sincerely hope to establish a tradition with this high-ranking contest. Üdvözlöm Önöket a Miskolci Egyetem Bartók Béla Zeneművészeti Karán, ahol a belváros szívében található, impozáns Zenepalota ad otthont iskolánknak, mely közel 100 éve áll a zenei képzés szolgálatában. Jenő Hubay Violin Competition

The Jenő Hubay Violin Competition was established in 2020 by Katalin Kokas and Barnabás Kelemen for the youngest generation of Central-Eastern European violinists under 20 years of age. The competition is open for applicants from Hungary’s neighbouring countries and the „Visegrád Four”. Highly prestigious violinists or violin teachers will serve on the jury of each country of our region; the legendary Austrian violinist Boris Kuschnir, professor of the Conservatory of Vienna and the Music Academy of Graz will act as president of the jury. This contest is the gateway to the Ilona Fehér International Violin Competition, which takes place every two years in Budapest as a part of international chamber music festival Festival Academy Budapest. The finalists of the Hubay Competition are automatically inivited to the International Ilona Fehér Violin Competition. The Jenő Hubay Competition is a joint endeavour of Festival Academy Budapest and the Béla Bartók Music Institute of the University of Miskolc. Total Prize Money: 8500 € Special prizes: In addition to the prizes awarded by the jury, the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, the Anima Musicae Chamber Orchestra, the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra Miskolc an dthe Ede Reményi Chamber Orchestra will provide engagements for selected contestants.

A Hubay Jenő Hegedűversenyt 2020-ban alapította Kokas Katalin és Kelemen Barnabás a legifjabb, húsz évesnél fiatalabb, közép-kelet-európai hegedűművész generáció számára. A versenyen a Magyarországgal szomszédos országok, valamint a Visegrádi Négyek országainak 20 év alatti hegedűsei jelentkezhetnek. A zsűriben a térség valamennyi országából helyet kap egy rangos hegedűművész vagy hegedűtanár, a zsűri elnöki tisztét a legendás, ukrán származású osztrák hegedűművész, Boris Kuschnir, a Bécsi Konzervatórium és a Grazi Zeneművészeti Egyetem professzora tölti be. A hegedűverseny a kétévente megrendezett Fehér Ilona Nemzetközi Hegedűverseny „előszobája”. A Hubay-verseny döntősei automatikus meghívást kapnak a Fehér Ilona Nemzetközi Hegedűversenyre. A Hubay Jenő Hegedűverseny helyszínéül a Miskolci Egyetem Bartók Béla Zeneművészeti Intézete szolgál. Boris Kuschnir (UKR/AUT) Austria violinist Boris Kuschnir was born in Kiev in 1948. He studied violin with Boris Belenky at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatoire and chamber music with Valentin Berlinsky of the Borodin Quartet. His many encounters with Dmitri Shostakovich (working on his last quartets) and David Oistrakh, with whom he also studied, had a lasting influence on his artistic development. He has won numerous prizes at international violin and chamber music competitions. He played in some of the world’s most famous venues and in numerous festivals such as Salzburg and Verbier. He appears with such illustrious partners as Evgeny Kissin, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Maxim Vengerov, Yuri Bashmet, Mischa Maisky. Among his pupils are Julian Rachlin, Nikolaj Znaider, Sergey Dogadin and Maria Duenas. He founded the Moscow String Quartet, the Wiener Schubert Trio and the Vienna Brahms Trio. He is a Professor at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna and also a distinguished Professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. He is a jury member of various international music competitions such as the Queen Elizabeth Competition and the Tchaikovsky Competition. The Austrian President awarded him with the Grand Decoration of Honour in Silver for Services to the Republic of Austria and Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and the Arts, First Class.

Az Ausztriában élő ukrán származású hegedűművész, Boris Kuschnir 1948-ban született Kijevben. A moszkvai Csajkovszkij Konzervatóriumban Boris Belenky oktatta, kamarazenét pedig Valentin Berlinsky, a Borogyin Kvartett híres csellistája mellett tanult. Számos díjat nyert nemzetközi hegedű- és kamarazenei versenyeken, az osztrák köztársasági elnök Professor címmel, az Osztrák Köztársaságnak tett szolgálataiért ezüst díszéremmel és az Osztrák Tudományos és Művészeti Becsületkeresztjével tüntette ki. Szólistaként a világ leghíresebb koncerttermeiben és fesztiváljain lépett fel, kamarazenészként pedig olyan illusztris partnerekkel játszott, mint Evgeny Kissin, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Boris Berezovsky. A Moszkvai Vonósnégyes, a Bécsi Schubert Trió és a Bécsi Brahms Trió alapítója. 1984-ben a Bécsi Városi Zene- és Művészeti Egyetem, 1999-ben pedig a Grazi Zene- és Előadóművészeti Egyetem kiváló professzora lett. Anatoly Bazhenov (UKR) Violinist Anatoly Bazhenov, born in 1945, Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, possesses all the highest awards of Ukraine. Since he graduated from Moscow Conservatory and completed his Doctoral studies at Kyiv Conservatory, he has given more than 3000 concerts as a soloist and chamber musician worldwide, including world premieres of numerous music pieces by Ukrainian composers. He owns a Ferdinando Gagliano violin made in 1739. Since 1970 Anatoly Bazhenov is a first violinist of the famous Ukrainian Lysenko String Quartet.

Anatoly Bazhenov, Ukrajna legrangosabb kitüntetéseivel rendelkező hegedűművész 1945-ben született. A moszkvai, majd kijevi Konzervatóriumban végzett tanulmányit követően több mint 3000 koncertet adott szólistaként és kamarazenészként a világ számos pontján. Nevéhez több ukrán zeneszerző művének premierje fűződik. Egy 1739-ból származó Ferdinando Gagliano hegedű tulajdonosa. Anatoly Bazhenov 1970 óta az ukrán Lysenko Kvartett tagja.

Žiga Brank (SVN) Slovenian violinist and pedagogue Žiga Brank currently teaching at the Academy of Music Ljubljana and at the Conservatory of Music and Ballet Ljubljana. He was also teaching in international masterclasses and gave lectures as a guest professor at the Academy of Music in Zagreb. He has performed at the most important slovenian festivals, presenting numerous recitals, chamber music projects and has also performed as a soloist with orchestras. He has developed a rich discography that include also complete violin solo sonatas by E. Ysaye and Paganini’s 24 capricci.

Žiga Brank szlovén származású hegedűművész és pedagógus, jelenleg a ljubljanai Zeneakadémia és a Zene- és Balettkonzervatórium tanára. Nemzetközi mesterkurzusokon tanít, valamint vendégprofesszorként a zágrábi Zeneakadémián tartott előadásokat. Kamarazenei projektjeinek keretében számos hangversenyen lépett fel mint kamarazenész és szólista Szlovénia elismert zenei fesztiváljain. Számos CD felvételt készített, többek között E. Ysaye szólószonátáit és Paganini 24 capriccióját is lemezre vette. 9

of the Competition A verseny zsűrije Goran Končar (HRV) Goran Končar, the prominent Croatian violinist, started his international solo career in 1982 with great success. He studied at the Zagreb Music Academy and the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, then in Bern, Geneve and London. He was the concertmaster of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, the Croatian Radio & Television Symphony Orchestra and the Zagreb Philharmonic. From 1987 to 2012, he directed the oldest Croatian chamber ensemble, the Zagreb Quartet.

A horvát származású hegedűművész, Goran Končar 1982-ben kezdte nemzetközi karrierjét nagy sikerű szólistaként. Tanulmányait a zágrábi Zeneakadémián és a moszkvai Csajkovszkij Konzervatóriumban, majd Bernben, Genfben és Londonban végezte. A londoni Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, a horvát Rádió és Televízió Szimfonikus Zenekara és a Zágrábi Filharmonikusok koncertmestere volt. 1987 és 2012 között a legrégebbi horvát kamaraegyüttest, a Zágrábi Kvartettet vezette.

Jozef Kopelman (SVK) Violinist Jozef Kopelman was born in Uzhorod, Ukraine. He studied at the Conservatory in Uzhorod, Academy of Music Kiev, and with Olga Parkhonenko in Kiev. He was a teacher At Liszt Academy Budapest previously and he is a prominent teacher, professor of violin at the Conservatory and Academy of Arts in Bratislava, artistic director and founding member of the International Master Classes, Schola Arvenzis, conductor and artistic adviser of the Bratislava Chamber Soloists, and jury member at numerous international competitions.

Jozef Kopelman hegedűművész Uzhorodban, Ukrajnában született. Az uzhorodi konzervatóriumban és a kijevi Zeneakadémián szerezte meg diplomáját, Olga Parkhonenko növendékeként. Korábban a budapesti Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Egyetem tanára, kiemelkedő pedagógus, a pozsonyi Konzervatórium és Zeneművészeti egyetem professzora, művészeti vezetője és alapítója a nemzetközi mesterkurzusnak, a Schola Arvenzis-nek, a Bratislava Chamber Soloists karmestere és művészeti tanácsadója, valamint számos nemzetközi verseny zsűritagja.

František Novotný (CZE) Czech violinist František Novotný is a graduate of Brno Conservatory and the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts. He also studied violin with Zakhar Bron and Viktor Tretiakov. Apart from traditional repertoire, he also plays lesser-known or completely unknown works by noted composers, such as Bernstein, Korngold, Copland, Berg. He teaches at the Janáček Academy, Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, acts as a jury member at international violin competitions, and regularly gives masterclasses.

František Novotný cseh származású hegedűművész a brünni konzervatóriumban és a Janáček Zene- és Előadóművészeti Akadémián szerezte meg diplomáját, emellett tanult Zakhar Bron és Viktor Tretiakov mellett is. Repertoárjában a hagyományos darabok mellett olyan neves zeneszerzők kevésbé ismert vagy teljesen ismeretlen művei is szerepelnek, mint Bernstein, Korngold, Copland vagy Berg. Tanít a pozsonyi Janáček Akadémián, a pozsonyi Művészeti Egyetemen, nemzetközi hegedűversenyek zsűritagja, valamint rendszeresen tart mesterkurzusokat is.

Eszter Perényi (HUN) Violinist Eszter Perényi is an award-winning soloist, chamber musician, professor at the Liszt Academy of Music, and acted as the head of the String Department between 2006 and 2010. Her pupils have successfully performed at national and international competitions. Péter Somogyi, Barnabás Kelemen, Katalin Kokas, Ádám Banda, Ernő Kállai, Lajos Sárközy Jr. and many others pursued their studies with her. She holds masterclasses in Hungary, China and in several major European cities. She is a course leader at the Vienna-Budapest-Prague Summer Academy in Semmering and a frequent juror of major international competitions.

Perényi Eszter számos díjjal és kitüntetéssel elismert hegedűművész, kamarazenész, a Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Egyetem professor emeritusa, 2006 és 2010 között a Vonós Tanszék vezetője volt. Növendékei sikerrel szerepelnek hazai és nemzetközi versenyeken, nála tanult többek között Somogyi Péter, Kelemen Barnabás, Kokas Katalin, Banda Ádám, Kállai Ernő és ifj. Sárközy Lajos. Mesterkurzusokat tart Magyarországon kívül Kínában és Európa nagyvárosaiban is. Állandó kurzusvezető a Bécs-Budapest-Prága nyári akadémián, a Semmering-en, valamint gyakori tagja nagy nemzetközi versenyek zsűrijének. 11

The Jury

of the Competition A verseny zsűrije Vlad Răceu (ROU) Vlad Răceu, one of the most successful violinists of his generation, began his musical studies at the age of 6, and already with eight years, he made his concert debut with the Satu Mare State Philharmonic. After receiving his Master’s degree, he remained at the Musical Academy in Cluj-Napoca as a teacher, regularly giving masterclasses in Romania and Moldova. Vlad Răceu is a frequent soloist with orchestras throughout Romania, a permanent guest at national and international festivals. He is a founding member of the Transylvanian Piano Trio and soloist in residence at Satu Mare State Philharmonic.

Vlad Răceu gyakori szólistája különböző zenekaroknak Romániában, valamint helyi és nemzetközi fesztiválok állandó vendége. Alapító tagja az Erdélyi Zongoratriónak, a Szatmári Állami Filharmónia állandó szólistája.

Maria Spengler-Markovic (SRB) London-based Serbian violinist Maria Spengler-Markovic enjoys a busy career as a soloist, chamber musician, concertmaster and educator. She studied with Prof. David Takeno in London. Since 2004 Maria Spengler-Markovic has held the violin professorship at the Faculty of Music, University of Arts in Belgrade, where she graduated from herself. As a soloist, she premiered contemporary pieces and collaborated with such contemporary ensembles as the Musikfabrik and Ensemble Modern, performing at festivals in Lucerne, Darmstadt, Vienna and Brussels. She also recorded CDs and lead orchestras all around in Europe and Australia.

A Londonban élő, szerb származású hegedűművész, Maria SpenglerMarković szólistaként, kamarazenészként és tanárként is jelentős sikereket ért el. Bartłomiej Tełewiak (POL) Bartłomiej Tełewiak – scholarship holder of the Swiss government and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage – graduated with honours from the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice and the Hochschule der Künste Bern. The renowned violinist, chamber musician and concertmaster is the artistic director of Young Arts Festival and director of Young Arts Masterclass – international masterclasses for young students with professors such as Barnabás Kelemen, Mats Lidstrom, Roberto Training.

Masterclasses and professional lectures are an inherent part of the Ilona Fehér International Violin Competition and the Jenő Hubay Violin Competition, founded by the Festival Academy Budapest. The masterclasses provide an opportunity for the eliminated competitors to learn and develop with renowned artists, also to connect with each other. The teachers who take part in the programme can deepen their knowledge as an accredited course alongside the accomplished educators. A mesterkurzusok lehetőséget biztosítanak a verseny nem továbbjutó versenyzőinek, hogy neves művészek segítségével tanuljanak, fejlődjenek tovább, valamint megismerhessék kortársaikat. A programon részt vevő pedagógusok pedig akkreditált továbbképzés formájában mélyíthetik el tudásukat az elismert oktatók óráit hallgatva. IV Ilona Fehér International Violin Competition Budapest 7–17 July 2022 House of Hungarian Music President of the Jury: Shlomo Mintz Katalin Kokas and Barnabás Kelemen established the Ilona Fehér International Violin Competition in 2017 for the youngest generation of violinists under the age of 20. The competitors’ performances are evaluated by an international jury consisting of renowned violinists and music educators, headed by – from the beginning – the legendary Shlomo Mintz, Ilona Fehér’s one-time student. Masterclasses given by the jurors form an inherent part of the Ilona Fehér International Violin Competition. The contestants also have the possibility to attend the rehearsals and concerts of the international chamber music festival, Festival Academy Budapest, taking part after the competition at various splendid venues in Budapest and in the marvellous building of the Liszt Academy under the artistic leadership of Katalin Kokas and Barnabás Kelemen. The competition, therefore, doesn’t only provide young violinists with the possibility to display their talent to the world but also to learn in the literal sense of the word, at masterclasses, and in a broader sense, at the chamber music recitals of world-class celebrities. IV. Fehér Ilona Nemzetközi Hegedűverseny Budapest 2022. július 7-17. Magyar Zene Háza Zsűrielnök: Shlomo Mintz A Fehér Ilona Nemzetközi Hegedűversenyt 2017-ben alapította Kokas Katalin és Kelemen Barnabás a legifjabb, húsz évesnél fiatalabb hegedűművész generáció számára. A verseny zőket neves hegedűművészekből és pedagógusokból álló nemzetközi zsűri értékeli, amelynek elnöki tisztét kezdettől fogva a legendás Shlomo Mintz, Fehér Ilona egykori növendéke tölti be. A Fehér Ilona Nemzetközi Hegedűversenynek szerves részét képezik a zsűritagok által adott mesterkurzusok, továbbá a lehetőség, hogy a Kokas Katalin és Kelemen Barnabás művészeti vezetésével, a verseny után Budapest különleges helyein és a Zeneakadémia kultikus épületében zajló nemzetközi kamarazenei fesztivál, a Fesztivál Akadémia Budapest próbáin és koncertjein is részt vehetnek a versenyzők. A verseny tehát nemcsak arra kíván lehetőséget teremteni az ifjú hegedűsöknek, hogy tehetségükkel megmutatkozzanak a nagyvilág előtt, hanem arra is, hogy tanuljanak: a szó szoros értelmében a mesterkurzusokon, a szó tágabb értelmében a világsztárok kamarahangversenyein.
