FORWARD This year’s Author Celebration is a rich display of the scholarship and creativity of our 2015 authors and includes a range of topics from nineteenth-century French posters, Sudanese women refugees, and Big Data to planning a runDisney marathon, the Helsinki Accords, and reporting on the 2014 World Cup. Today we recognize their dedication, discipline, and hard work; honor their achievements; and, celebrate their contributions to the Ferris State University community and their professional disciplines.

Today’s academic library provides vital access to scholarly and creative work, and helps users find the most appropriate work for their individual learning and research needs. These functions provide building blocks that help students, faculty, and staff achieve success through creating new knowledge, art, and other works for themselves, and whole communities.

Another important role the library can play is to bring greater attention to and celebrate the excellent work students, faculty, and staff disseminate and exhibit, built in part on the foundation the library and its services provide.

In many cases at Ferris State University, this work results from faculty-student and other collaboration. It documents the opportunity Ferris State University offers students to gain valuable experience before beginning their careers. It also documents our faculty’s commitment to advancing their fields, pursuing their passions, and teaching the next generation of practitioners, researchers, and artists who will contribute new knowledge and creativity to the world.

The Ferris Library for Information, Technology and Education congratulates the 2015 Ferris authors and creators, and looks forward to celebrating continued success in the years to come.

AUTHORS Eana Agopian, Student Agopian is an artist, printmaker, designer, and event promoter based in Southwest Michigan. She studied art education and fine art photography at Western Michigan University’s Gwen Frostic School of Art, followed by a seven year stint organizing art, music, and food related events in Kalamazoo. In addition to showing her own work, she has curated and hosted over 20 exhibitions featuring local and outsider artists. Currently, she is a graduate student at Kendall College of Art and Design where she continues to pursue interests in photography, printmaking, textiles, and collage.

ART EXHIBIT Euthalia (Co-Author: Cobb, E.) The installation project consists of images of common medical plant leaves that are often considered weeds, including dandelion, clover, plantain, lamb’s quarters, and chicory. Printed from woodcuts and screen prints in green and gold tones, these prints range from 10” to 30”. The leaves are individually cut out and arranged in overlapping clusters, covering large amounts of surface area. By reintroducing natural forms, they draw attention to the role of nature in urban landscape.

Sandy Alspach, Professor Alspach is the champion for the Sports Communication program. This project grew from her interaction with an international exchange student in COMM 366 Diversity and Communication, who mentored her into a new appreciation of the global common ground of Sport. She is a board member and co-planner for the International Association for Communication and Sport Summit in March 2016 in Grand Rapids; and is active in the Michigan Statewide Sports Management Association.

PRESENTATION “They Saw a Tournament”: Cross-Cultural Analysis of the 2014

FIFA World Cup From the Perspectives of a Dutch Fan and a U.S. Newcomer (Co-Author: van Steijn, J.)

Alspach and van Steijn compared data from online sources reporting the 2014 World Cup to discover differences between reports in the United States, where soccer is a second-tier sport, and in the Netherlands, where it is the premier sport. They discovered that the US press featured more entertainment elements surrounding the events of the World Cup while the Dutch press featured more stories reporting the actual games and the players.

Billie Anderson, Associate Professor Anderson is a senior analytical consult for SAS and has consulted with such companies as Ann Taylor, Dunn & Bradstreet, Blue Cross Blue Shield, CVS, and Starbucks, just to name a few. She has authored many journal articles and book chapters in the field of big data analytics, credit scoring, and healthcare informatics. She is currently working on a SAS Press book entitled Application and Development of Credit Scorecards Using SAS® Enterprise Miner™, which will be published late 2016.

BOOK CHAPTER Data Analytics (Co-Author: Hardin, J.M.) Advances in technology have enabled the medical community to generate and capture more data than ever before. It is important to have data analysts that can effectively and reliably analyze this tremendous amount of health data so that healthcare providers can make the best decisions for the patients. This chapter explains current practices of data collection and how big data sources can be leveraged. The ethical issues that surround big data in the healthcare landscape are also examined.

Michael Berghoef, Professor Berghoef is a Professor of Social Work and teaches theory, research, and international service learning courses in El Salvador. He was a Carnegie PEP Scholar from 2007-2009 and has been involved in Ferris State University’s PEP, ADP, and ASL initiatives since their inception. He is a charter member of the Ferris Employees’ Alliance. His interests include gerontology, international social work, race relations, technology, and culture. His clinical practice was in mental health and substance abuse treatment.

PRESENTATION The Challenges and Necessity of Teaching Online Therapy Skills

in the Virtual Social Work Classroom (Co-Authors: Gladden, J. & Vizina-Roubal, J.)

This workshop reviewed the state-of-the-art of teaching technologically enhanced therapy options in a variety of traditional and technologically enhanced ways. Tradeoffs in teaching online interviewing techniques in face-to-face, hybrid, and online classroom situations were illustrated and discussed. Various modalities were compared and contrasted including voice only, text only, and video with voice.

PRESENTATION Technology and BSW Education: Cloud & Apps & Hardware (Co-

The panel, consisting of members of the Technology Committee of the National Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors, presented issues and opportunities utilizing social media, apps, tablets, and other IT developments impacting current pedagogy and anticipating future challenges created by technology in the classroom.

Megan Biller, Communication Specialist Biller began running five years ago, completing multiple 5K, 10K, half marathon, 25K, and marathon races, including the multi-day Dopey Challenge. She loves to run local races in her home state of Michigan, yet also enjoys the magic of runDisney events. She is the Communications Specialist for the Doctorate in Community College Leadership program at Ferris State University. She enjoys working with students, as well as learning from her colleagues.

Magical Miles: The Runner’s Guide to Walt Disney World is a guide for all runDisney events, offering advice on resorts, restaurants, race registration, packing, The ethical issues that surround big data in the healthcare landscape are also examined. tips, spectator information, training, race day information, and much more.

David Bright, Associate Professor Bright, PharmD, BCACP, is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy in the College of Pharmacy. He received his PharmD degree and completed a community pharmacy residency with the University of Toledo. His scholarly interests include the implementation and improvement of direct patient care services in outpatient pharmacy practice.

SCHOLARLY ARTICLE Implementation of a Pharmacogenetic

Management Service for Post-Myocardial Infarction Care in a Community Pharmacy (Co-Authors: Conaway, M., Kisor, D.F., Smith, A. & Yu, M.) A team of clinicians, scientists, and students worked to integrate pharmacogenetic testing into the practice model of four community pharmacies across Ohio.

Pharmacogenetic testing allows for health care professionals to better estimate a patient’s risk of side effects and chance of therapeutic success of some medications based on that patient’s genetics. Through this project, pharmacogenetic testing was used to help guide the optimization of antiplatelet medications used after a heart attack.

Keith G. Calkins, Adjunct Instructor Calkins was Associate Professor of Math and Science at Andrews University where he worked in the Computer Center from 1978 to 1993 and the Math & Science Center from 1993 to 2011. He earned his Bachelor of Science in math and physics as well as three Master’s degrees in math and physics, computer science, and education at Andrews University. He obtained a fourth Master’s degree and PhD in physics from the University of Notre Dame, measuring the Cs D1 line to 13 significant digits using a billion data points. Keith has taught chemistry, computer science, and physics at Ferris State University since 2011.

NON-FICTION BOOK Euclidean Geometry and its Subgeometries (Co-Authors:

Jones, H.T., Specht, E.J. & Rhoads, D.H.)

This book develops Euclidean geometry from 13 independent, consistent, nonmetric axioms, using up-to-date language and providing detailed proofs accessible to undergraduates. Subgeometries are built as the axioms are introduced sequentially.

Standard topics and 300 exercises are included, with solutions and supplements available online. The book can be regarded as a completion, updating, and expansion of Hilbert’s work, using reflection mappings, filling a gap in the existing literature.

BOOK CHAPTERS Foreign Artists and Communities in Modern Paris, 1870-

1914 (Co-Author: Waller, S.)

This book chapter examines Paris as a center of international culture that attracted artists from Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Americas during a period of burgeoning global immigration. Sixteen essays by a group of emerging and established international scholars - including several whose work has not been previously published in English - address the experiences of foreign exiles, immigrants, students, and expatriates.

SCHOLARLY ARTICLE “Masterpieces for Ragpickers”: Working-Class

Crowds, Collective Spectatorship, and the Censorship of Posters in Late 19th-Century Paris This essay argues that the revolutionary potential of the poster and its mode of collective spectatorship made it subject to greater scrutiny, censorship, and public debate from 1881 until 1893 when political propaganda was increasingly repressed following anarchist bombings. Nevertheless, political activists of this period were able to disseminate their radical viewpoints through clandestine distribution of posters that represented ephemeral resistance to the Third Republican government.

PRESENTATION The Transatlantic Influence of the Académie Julian on

American Illustration, 1890–1914

Karen L. Carter, Assistant Professor Carter’s research focuses on turn-of-the-century French posters and illustrations. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Design History, Nineteenth-Century French Studies, and Yale French Studies.

She has received grants and fellowships from the University of Chicago, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Getty Research Institute, the French-American Foundation, the Library of Congress, and the National Endowment of the Humanities.

PRESENTATION Contamination Through the Eyes: The

Censorship of Illustrated Posters in Fin-de-siècle

In 1891, the Parisian police seized and destroyed hundreds of examples of publicity posters and the posters’ artists and printers were charged with violating public decency. The Parisian authorities perceived the eroticism of these publicity posters as unleashing an unbridled, treacherous sexuality in the public sphere that was threatening precisely because it could not be sequestered, but controlled only through its removal and destruction.

This presentation analyzed the internationalization of illustration education through courses provided at the Académie Julian in Paris and the school’s encouragement of students to pursue opportunities in the commercial arts. The illustration and painting courses offered there provided an entire generation of Americans studying in Paris the opportunity to form a network of illustration professionals that included J.C. Leyendecker (1874–1951), examined here as an important case study.

Emily Cobb, Student Cobb is a graduate student in the printmaking program at Kendall College of Art and Design. She has an interest in nature and material, and has been heavily involved in the Grand Rapids art community. She has shown in several group shows in the West Michigan area.

ART EXHIBIT Euthalia (Co-Author: Agopian, E.) Euthalia was taken on as a collaborative project through a proposal to the Southern Graphics Council International Conference which took place in Knoxville, Tennessee. The project was inspired by the weeds native to that area that often have great medicinal value. To draw attention to the beauty of these plants, large colorful block prints of 8 leaves and 5 flowers on Tyvek, their backs sprayed with gold, were hung along a large fence in the Old Town area of Knoxville.

Christopher L. Cosper, Assistant Professor

Beverly J. DeMarr, Professor

Cosper is an assistant professor in the Architecture and Facility Management program, where he teaches environmental building systems, a history of sustainability, and design studio.

Cosper holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree and a Master of Arts in English from Mississippi State University (1994 and 1996), and he is the first graduate of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design Master of Design Studies program to concentrate in Critical Conservation (2012).

DeMarr holds a PhD in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management from Michigan State University.

She teaches courses in Negotiation, Compensation, Human Resources, and Organizational Behavior, has been recognized for excellence in teaching, and wrote Negotiation and Dispute Resolution with Dr. Suzanne de Janasz. She is a member of the Organizational Behavior Teaching Society and the Academy of Management where she is an invited member of the all-academy Teaching Theme Committee.

PRESENTATION Enriching Architectural Scholarship by Building on Boyer Written for a conference session titled “How Do We Define Architectural Research Today?” scheduled for the 103rd Annual Meeting of the ACSA, this paper takes a simple position: “we” do not define architectural research, assuming “we” refers to architects or other designers. Instead, many architecture faculty and other designers are forced to shoehorn their scholarly activities into a system created by and intended for scientists, liberal arts scholars, and other non-designers.

Adnan Dakkuri, Professor Dakkuri, PhD, is a Professor of Pharmaceutics and has published many research and review articles. Internationally, he has worked with fellow researchers and published an encyclopedia chapter, presented at meetings, and consulted for several pharmacy colleges in the Middle East. He served Ferris State University as Academic Senate President for two terms and currently serves on a number of University-wide committees. His honors include the Academic Scholar and Distinguished Service awards.

POSTER An Interactive Exercise in Comparing and Contrasting Three

Orders of Chemical Kinetics

The “compare and contrast” approach to learning is widely used throughout different phases of education. In this graphic poster, the focus is on chemical and physical kinetics where the three prevalent orders are zero, first, and second. The exercise has been designed to enhance student comprehension and minimize apprehension vis-a-vis kinetics. Student evaluations pointed to a very positive response to this interactive exercise.

This session provided participants an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of their teaching to learn from the past, understand the present, and help prepare for the future. The presenters identified the teaching methods, techniques, and tools that have stood the test of time, explored what is being done today, and envisioned what may be valuable in the future given the inevitable changes in the landscape of higher education.

PRESENTATION Creating Community and Early Engagement: Sharing as a

Community of Educators (Co-Authors: Fender, C.M. & Stickney, L.T.)

This session explored ways to build community and foster early engagement in traditional, blended, and online classes and provided participants an opportunity to share tips, tools, and techniques.

PRESENTATION Innovative and Experiential Approaches to Teaching

HRM II (Co-Authors: Berkley, R.A., Bowes-Sperry, L., Crossman, J.E., de Janasz, S.C., DeMarr, B.J., Ensher, E., Forret, M.L., Goldberg, C., Kaplan, D.M., Lobel, S.M.J., Marler, J.H., Peiperl, M., Rosen, C.C., Schneer, J.A. & Whiting, V.R.) This session provided those who teach Human Resources and Organizational Behavior an opportunity to expand their repertoire of exercises and pedagogies in a round table format. DeMarr presented a method of conducting role plays that encourages active participation in in-class role plays while providing a safety net for students who may be nervous about role playing in front of others in the class.

Amy Dinardo, Associate Professor

Thomas Dowling, Assistant Dean

Dinardo is an Associate Professor at the Michigan College of Optometry. She graduated with high distinction from the Michigan College of Optometry in 2007. One year later, she completed a residency focusing on corneal diseases and specialty contact lenses. Her interests include advanced contact lens fitting, anterior segment disease, and pharmacology.

Dowling received his PharmD degree from Ferris State University, and a PhD in Clinical Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Pittsburgh. Over the past 20 years he has conducted clinical and translational research in kidney disease and drug pharmacokinetics funded by the federal government (NIH, FDA), pharmacy foundations (AFPE, ACCP), and the pharmaceutical industry. He has authored over 50 manuscripts and book chapters.

POSTER An Analysis of the Neutralization Process of

Hydrogen Peroxide Care Systems (Co-Authors: Andrews, E. & Hancock, K.) This poster is a presentation of research comparing the neutralization process of the three most common hydrogen peroxide contact lens care systems and describes how it is applicable to patient care.

Qian Ding, Assistant Professor Ding, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the College of Pharmacy.

She teaches marketing, organizational behavior, and medication safety in Pharmacy Practice Management I and health behavioral change theories in Sociopharmacy and Professional Ethics. Her research interests focus on medication errors and patient safety in the health care systems.

BOOK CHAPTER Pharmacy in North America (Co-Authors:

Serradell, J. & Wertheimer, A.I.)

PRESENTATION Estimating Kidney Function in Obesity This podium presentation was delivered at the 2015 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and qualified for continuing education credit for pharmacists. This presentation was selected as a hot topic focusing on the impact of obesity on the US public health.

Obesity is prevalent in approximately 35% of the US population, and is a leading contributor to heart disease, diabetes, and kidney disease.

SCHOLARLY ARTICLE Influence of Kidney Disease on Drug Disposition: An

Assessment of Industry Studies Submitted to the FDA for New Chemical Entities 1999-2010 (Co-Authors: Marks, S., Matzke, G.R. & Murphy, J.E.)

This work involves a review of data obtained from the US FDA’s database on new drug applications. The authors studied how closely drug companies were following instructions from the FDA to study drug handling (pharmacokinetics) in people with kidney disease. The findings were published in a top-tier pharmacology journal, and will assist the FDA to improve reporting of drug studies in the future.

This book chapter discussed the complexity of the health care systems in the United States, including pharmaceutical supply chains, reimbursement and thirdparty payers systems, the roles of the pharmacists from dispensing to patientcentered medication therapy management roles, and the growth of technologies and automations in drug distribution systems. The book also compared the health care systems in the US with those in the other countries in North America: Canada and Mexico.

Timothy M. Eklin, Assistant Professor

PRESENTATION From Bed-Covering to Banner: Women’s Ways of Making

Eklin’s research activities involve organizational leadership and change issues within the correctional system. He currently serves as Chair of the Michigan Correctional Officers’ Training Council (MCOTC). He was appointed to the Council by the honorable Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, and was elected as committee chair by his peers to a term expiring March 2016.

Eklin is the director of the local jail corrections officer training academy at Ferris State University.

The nineteenth-century struggle for women’s voting rights was marked by a turn toward visual and material strategies—among them, the quilt. During a time in which it was still unseemly for women to speak to public audiences, the display of quilts allowed for the re-inscribing of the public podium into a more private space from which female speakers could more effectively advance reforms. Engbers plans to integrate aspects of this research into an upcoming course on American women’s history.

PRESENTATION Where Theory Meets Practice:

Deirdre Fagan, Assistant Professor

Embedding a Corrections Training Academy in a Bachelor’s Degree Program (Co-Author: Stone, M.) Preservice corrections training has undergone several transformations in the past two decades. Rarely has this training been incorporated into a bachelor’s degree program.

This paper seeks to enhance our understanding of the benefits of embedding a training curriculum into a bachelor’s degree program by describing the experiences of students and instructors in one such criminal justice program.

Susanna Kelly Engbers, Professor Engbers, PhD, teaches courses in rhetoric, writing, and literature, and her research focuses on the visual and verbal rhetorical strategies of nineteenth-century American suffragists as well as the intersections of visual rhetoric and design.

Her work has been published in Rhetoric Society Quarterly; the College English Association Forum; Art, Design, and Communication in Higher Education; and, most recently, American Catholic Studies.

Suffrage Arguments through Quilting

Fagan, DA, is an assistant professor in the Languages and Literature Department. She teaches poetry, creative writing, American literature, and composition courses. Since 2010, she has published creative work in a variety of journals. Prior to 2010, her publications were in literary criticism. She is currently working primarily on her poetry and short stories.

POEM “Most of the Days of the Week” The poem alludes to Dorothy Parker’s “Resume” and offers playful and biting considerations of suicide as well as a renewed sense of hope.

POEM “Times Square, 1977” The poem offers reflections on childhood and how New York City has changed since the 1970s.

POEM “X,Y,C” The poem concerns memory, fear, and loss.

SCHOLARLY ARTICLE A Woman Both ‘New’ and ‘True’:

Jane Campbell as Catholic Suffragist

Accounts of the Progressive Era in the United States generally lack discussion of Catholic laywomen, yet they played key roles during this time period. In particular, Jane Campbell (1845-1928) maintained leadership roles in both the Church and the suffrage community. Engbers’ article provides historical context for the Church at this time and discusses Campbell’s influence in both the suffrage and Catholic communities during a critical period of change for both.

Lori Ann Faulkner, Assistant Professor

Heather L. Girand, Professor

Faulkner is an Assistant Professor and Fashion Studies Chair at Kendall College of Art and Design. She actively engages her students in collaborations with the Grand Rapids Ballet, Spectrum Health, Opera GR, West Michigan Opera Project, DisArt and the Grand Rapids Public Museum. In addition to teaching, Faulkner is one of two educators on the Michigan Garment Industry Council and serves Kendall as a member of the President’s Council, Dean’s Academic Council, Academic Senate, and Visiting Creatives Committee.

Girand, PharmD, BCPPS, is a Professor of Pharmacy Practice in the College of Pharmacy. She received her PharmD degree at the University of Michigan and completed two residencies: a pharmacy practice residency at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan and a pediatric pharmacy residency at the University of Michigan Health System. She became a board certified pediatric pharmacy specialist in 2015 and maintains a practice site in general pediatrics at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.

ART EXHIBIT KCAD Fashion Studies Steampunk Exhibit Steampunk is a mix of creativity and imagination. It is a movement inspired from the past by Victorian Fashion and the Industrial Revolution. These influences are mixed with modern technologies and re-imagined into elaborate works of fashion

by Kendall College of Art & Design’s Fashion Studies Department in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Clifton Franklund, Professor Franklund is a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. Since joining Ferris State University in 2006, he has taught a variety of microbiology courses as well as a course on protein structure and function. His research interests primarily focus upon microbial polysaccharide biosynthesis and its role in bacterial virulence. He has served as the University Assessment Coordinator, and is currently the General Education Coordinator at Ferris.

LABORATORY MANUAL Online Microbiology

Laboratory Manual

This publication is an electronic microbiology laboratory manual. The creation of this project was supported and funded as a part of Ferris’ Rich Media Textbook Initiative.

Since its release in January 2015, it has been used by nearly 200 students and has reduced overall costs by over $9,200 when compared to the previous manual or over $1,600 when compared to printed course packs. He is currently working with a publisher to make these resources available for free as an electronic book.

BOOK CHAPTER Antimicrobial Controversies in Children

Advanced Pediatric Therapeutics is a textbook designed for advanced pediatric pharmacy practitioners that focuses on advanced disease management techniques, emerging research, and clinical controversies. Each chapter includes patient cases and self assessment questions that can be used with additional study guides designed for board certification preparation and review. This book chapter reviews current controversies related to antibiotic treatment of community-acquired pneumonia in children.

Jessica Gladden, Assistant Professor Gladden has a MSW from Grand Valley State University and a PhD from Michigan State University. She joined the Ferris State University faculty in 2013. Gladden specializes in refugee studies, and has written her dissertation on coping of East African refugees after visiting a refugee camp in Kenya.

She also founded and supervises Thrive: A Refugee Support Program, which works with refugees post-resettlement in the Grand Rapids area.

POSTER Issues of Dependency of Sudanese Refugee

Women in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya

Sudanese women living in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya were interviewed, revealing the issue of structural dependency. Refugees often end up becoming dependent on the physical assistance from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for their survival in both the short and long term setting. Findings and recommendations were discussed.

Leah Gose, Assistant Professor

Kathleen Harlan, Associate Professor

Gose is a visual artist specializing in photography. She is an Assistant Professor of Photography at Kendall College of Art & Design. Gose holds a BA in photography from the University of Colorado – Boulder and an MFA in photography from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas. Her current work explores memory loss through re-contextualized personal memories and appropriated family photographs and has been exhibited in various venues both nationally and internationally.

Harlan, RDH, MS is an Associate Professor in the College of Health Professions. She teaches in the Dental Hygiene Program and in the Core Course: Evidence-Based Health Practice. The College of Health Professions core course was developed by an interdisciplinary team of five in the Spring of 2014 to address the need for a research course within the College of Health Professions.

ART EXHIBIT Windowless Wonderings In consideration of our screen-driven, technological society, these photographs explore the phenomenon that despite increasingly global connections and roundthe-clock operations, separation and isolation still pervade human psychology. The joint efforts of AS+LG Co Lab explores the feeling of isolation and paranoia that result from feeling separated from familiar surroundings. The photographs examine long-distance collaboration and the heightened sense of self resulting from such separation.

John Scott Gray, Professor Gray teaches a wide range of philosophy and religious studies courses at Ferris State University, and has been at the University for ten years. His research interests are in applied philosophy, with emphasis on popular culture, sex and love, as well as political and social philosophy. He is married to Jo and has a son named Oscar. In his spare time, he collects sports cards and enjoys hockey.

BLOG Apartment Therapy House Tours As the sole House Tour contributor for Michigan, it was Hetu’s job to seek out cool/beautiful/quirky/well-designed homes and showcase those homes on ApartmentTherapy.com. He interviewed the renters or homeowners and photographed their interior design. Next, he edited the images and arranged them to best tell the home’s story with logical flow. After writing an introduction about each home and the people who occupied it, he submitted his work to the Apartment Therapy editors and it was published online.

Ho is an Associate Professor of Marketing at Ferris State University. His research focuses on customer value creation and delivery in the B2B context, marketing in Asia, international advertising and promotion, as well as marketing education. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed publications in journals and proceedings.

Hogan has taught in the School of Criminal Justice at Ferris State University for 19 years. Her research primarily focuses on corrections, including work environment issues, inmate rehabilitation, and correctional staff job satisfaction. She has also participated in research on policing and the death penalty.

This research’s aim was to identify what are the NZ Chinese customers’ preferences and perceptions in purchasing Japanese used vehicles and how the used car dealers in NZ can successfully attract and convince their Chinese customers to purchase from them. Based on the survey results, Chinese customers agreed that price, fuel efficiency, as well as style and appearance are all the important factors when they decide which Japanese vehicles to buy.

Targeting high-risk offenders is most likely to reduce recidivism even though this group is the least likely to participate. Interviews were conducted with a sample of inmates involuntarily in The CHANGE program as well as the staff who worked with the program. Responses show support for involuntary programs, indicating that behavioral change was occurring for the majority of program participants.

PRESENTATION Perceptions of International Students on Intensive Learning

This research attempted to analyze international students’ perceptions of intensive delivery in the context of New Zealand tertiary business education. The research employed a paper-based questionnaire for data collection. The data analysis was based on a five point Likert scale. It was concluded that international students believe that intensive courses offer more opportunities for feedback, and interaction with the lecturer.

Hundersmarck is an Assistant Professor in the School of Criminal Justice. He has written numerous articles on criminal behavior as well as on development and learning in policing.

Learning to Play and Binge Drinking on a College Campus

In this paper, the author used both quantitative and qualitative methodology to research binge drinking among college students on a university campus. The results obtained through observations and structured interviews show that students enter a developmental model of drinking beginning most often in their freshman year that continues into their senior year.

Kaczmarczyk’s work is in the permanent collections of the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Lake Shore Bank, Chicago, and the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts. During her recent sabbatical, she was awarded artist’s residencies at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts and the Hambidge Center for Art in Georgia and presented two solo shows of her work, “Food for Thought”. Last year she exhibited at Shanghai Meilidao International Art Institution. Kaczmarczyk’s Master of Arts degree in Photography is from Columbia College Chicago.

Kermit-Canfield joined FLITE faculty as Reference and Instruction Librarian following an appointment at Indiana University’s Prevention Resource Center. She has worked in music, education, and arts libraries at Penn State and Indiana University.

PRESENTATION Picture a Cake...

Collaboration and technology are universally accepted concepts. No one doubts that they are both next to godliness. But, how can they be adapted for the college classroom? This session (through examples and participation) fleshed out these concepts for today’s modern university. Creative Commons copyright, video creation, library resource guides, and Political Engagement Project involvement are some of the uses for the collaborative principles discussed.

The paper Kaczmarczyk presented at the Society for Photographic Education National Conference in New Orleans in 2015 focused on deconstructing food photographs in advertising, cookbooks, and social media and what they might say about changing attitudes towards food, cooking, and nutrition. She focused her attention on advertising photography because, after 40 years of working with pictures, she is still fascinated by how photographs make meaning.

Marsely L. Kehoe, Visiting Assistant Professor Kehoe completed a BA in art history and foreign languages at Kenyon College in Ohio, and then earned her MA and PhD in art history from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Before coming to Kendall College of Art and Design, she taught at Columbia College Chicago, Florida State College at Jacksonville, University of Northern Florida, and Columbia University. Her interests are in European and global arts, particularly of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and also cultural exchange across borders and time.

Hierarchy of the Dutch Colonial City

This journal article considers the city planning and development of the Dutch East India Company’s capital Batavia (now Jakarta, Indonesia). Built in 1619, this city enacted Dutch urban planning principles that ostensibly supported social equality through an open grid plan. Yet, these principles actually enforced an unequal colonial social hierarchy. This article considers the form of the city through historic maps as well as a series of laws enacted to control the behavior of residents.

Lee is an Associate Professor of Finance and this is his eighth year at Ferris State University.

McCrackin, NCIDQ, IIDA, IDEC, LEED AP ID+C, is an Assistant Professor of Interior Design and the current Program Chair of Interior Design at Kendall College of Art and Design where she began her teaching career in 2000. She started her design career in 1997, working in corporate office interiors. She has been active as a board member of the IIDA MI Chapter, and has demonstrated her commitment to furthering the recognition of the profession by being an active member of the NCIDQ Champion program.

Negotiation in the IPO Syndicate (Co-Author: Jeon, J.Q.) This paper develops novel measures for heated negotiation within the IPO syndicate. The results indicate that underwriters do not negotiate their shares of compensation based on their pre-commitment and actual provision of key underwriter services. Rather, it appears that heated negotiation materializes as comanagers resist against the lead underwriter’s initial unfair profit sharing design.

SCHOLARLY ARTICLE Multiple Lead Underwriter IPOs and Firm Visibility

Lee and his associates empirically examine and find that multiple lead underwriters (MLUs) have greater visibility through their five pre- and post-IPO visibility measures. This also holds after accounting for potential endogeneity. Also, MLUIPOs do not have more underpricing. Their results suggest that issuers with MLUs can increase the firm’s familiarity to the investment community and expand their investor base, and this increased firm visibility is not a trade-off for a greater level of underpricing.

Motz is a Ferris State University alumnus with two graduate degrees from the University of Michigan, now completing her 10th year as FLITE’s Library Instruction Coordinator. She is the library liaison to the School of Education and the TDMP Program, but also instructs for MBA, Language and Literature, Developmental Programs, and the Office of International Education. She received the Ferris Excellence in Course Assessment Team Award for 2015 with two colleagues.

Njoku is an Assistant Professor of Public Health in the College of Health Professions. She holds a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) from Drexel University, a MPH from Boston University, a BS in Public Health from Rutgers University, as well as postdoctoral training in psychosocial and behavioral medicine.

Her research and teaching specialties include health education and health promotion, socioecological perspectives in health, as well as evidence-based health practice.

Motz discussed how exercises and tasks could be adapted at other libraries and showed how The Race energized students and librarians while providing data-backed results using a Big Data Excel-based assessment tool.

Nybo is an Assistant Professor of Medicinal Chemistry in the College of Pharmacy. His research interests lie in the area of microbial-synthesized natural products, including terpenes and anticancer drugs.

Overbey is a graduate of Kendall College of Art and Design (BFA Digital Media 2012, MFA Painting 2015) and a children’s book author and illustrator.

Methylated Triterpene Production in Plants Provides Biochemical and Physiological Insights into Terpene Metabolism (Co-Authors: Bush, C., Chappell, J., Jiang, Z. & Kempinski, C.) Botryococcene and squalene are triterpene biofuels that originate from an ancient, slow-growing algae (Botryococcus braunii). In this work, tobacco plants were engineered to produce triterpenes, up to 544 µg botryococcene per gram fresh weight tissue. Methylated biofuels could be generated by co-expressing triterpene methyltransferases (TMTs) in high triterpene-producing plant lines.

into a Metabolically Versatile Host - Rhodobacter Capsulatus (Co-Authors: Chappell, J., Curtis, W.R. & Khan, N.) Rhodobacter capsulatus was engineered to produce triterpene biofuels and was demonstrated to produce these biofuels under heterotrophic, photoheterotrophic, and autotrophic growth conditions. The best-performing strain was able to produce 110 mg/L (16.7 mg/gDW) botryococcene with CO2 , H2 , and O2 under batch fed conditions.

CHILDREN’S BOOK The I-Wants and the Gimmies “The I-Wants and the Gimmies” is a story the author wrote for his daughter which shows that people are happier when they give, share, and work together. It is being published by Crimson Dragon Publishing in Aurora, CO.

Christian Peterson, Adjunct Professor Peterson received his BA in history from Yale (1999), MA in history from Utah State University (2001), and PhD in history from Ohio University (2009). He has authored Ronald Reagan and Antinuclear Movements in the United States and Western Europe, 1981-1987 (2003) and Globalizing Human Rights: Private Citizens, the Soviet Union, and the West (2011). He also won a prestigious National Endowment for the Humanities grant to hold a summer institute at Ferris State University for secondary teachers.

PRESENTATION Seeing the Value of the Helsinki

Accords: Human Rights, Peace, and Transnational Debates about Détente, 1981-1988 Peterson’s paper explored how the Helsinki Accords shaped transnational debates about the proper relationship among the issues of human rights violations, peace promotion, and the process of détente that took place during the 1980s. It explained why private citizens on both sides of the Iron Curtain came to see the provisions of this agreement as an excellent way to develop a “détente from below” that could end the “Cold War” and create a more united and peaceful Europe.

Piercey holds degrees in humanities, law, and mathematics.

He practiced law in the New York office of Weil, Gotshal, & Manges LLP for two years before returning to Michigan for a career in Mathematics. He is interested in using his legal experience to enhance his mathematics instruction and provide students with transformative experiences.

Powers received his MFA from the Art Institute of Boston in 2011 with a focus in object making. He maintains a sculptural studio practice in addition to his work as an educator. His artistic interests also include drawing and object assemblage.

His work has been shown at The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, Ferris State University, Kendall College of Art and Design, Muskegon Art Museum, UICA/Grand Rapids, Whitdel Arts/Detroit, and The College for Creative Studies/ Detroit.

When overt racism is culturally unacceptable, checking up on a nation’s “racial health” requires the careful analysis of data. In this presentation, a study of LAPD traffic stops was shared as an example illustrating the kind of care necessary to draw and appropriately limit conclusions from data.

NON-FICTION BOOK Understanding Jim Crow

Redker tested the premise that exposure to narcissistic reality TV characters is related to higher levels of narcissism among viewers. He also predicted that the link would be stronger for viewers who adopt the role of TV characters. This study found that greater exposure to narcissistic reality TV while engaged in experience taking is related to higher levels of narcissism. In general, these results suggest that media may shape personality traits that are generally assumed to be stable.

This book is a memoir of Pilgrim’s decades-long drive to collect racist books, illustrations, and knickknacks in order to help Americans confront, understand, and move past racism.

Deborah A. Rockman, Professor

Reger received his doctorate in Epidemiology in 2014 from Indiana University, and also attended Purdue and the University of Iowa. He is currently in his second year as an Assistant Professor in the Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Respiratory Care and Health Administration department, and was one of the founding members of the new Public Health BSPH and MPH programs at Ferris State University.

Research interests include chronic disease epidemiology, more specifically, the link between nutritional factors and the risk of clinically relevant cancer.

In 1993, Rockman was the first woman to receive a full professorship at Kendall College of Art and Design. She has exhibited in many solo, invitational, and group exhibitions throughout the U.S. and in China. Rockman has been awarded fellowships to artist colonies throughout the U.S. In addition to her studio work, she has authored two books, The Art of Teaching Art (2000) and 3 editions of Drawing Essentials: A Complete Guide to Drawing (2016), published by Oxford University Press in English, Chinese, and Turkish.

Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) is an inflammatory biomarker. A potential protective effect of phytoestrogen intake on cancer risk may be mediated in part through its influence on serum CRP levels. This study examined the associations between phytoestrogens and serum CRP among 6,009 subjects aged ≥ 40 years in the continuous NHANES. Both linear and logistic regression analyses showed a significant inverse association between phytoestrogens and serum levels of CRP. This study investigated the associations of urinary phytoestrogens with total cancer, cardiovascular, and all-cause mortality among 5,179 participants in the continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Specific phytoestrogens were associated with both increased and decreased cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in a representative sample of the US population.

Woven together is the killing of innocents with the latest fashions, the abuse of poor laborers, the lack of access to health care, and the starvation of refugees. The false notion that all is well is blended with the harsh truth of pain, loss, and suffering. Rockman examines the parallel worlds of truth and deception, and she desired to illuminate the contradictions.

Adam Schuitema, Associate Professor Schuitema is an Associate Professor of English at Kendall College of Art and Design. He is the author of the novel Haymaker and the short-story collection “Freshwater Boys”.

Both books were named Michigan Notable Books by the Library of Michigan. His next book, a collection called The Things We Do That Make No Sense, will be published spring 2017.

FICTION BOOK Haymaker Haymaker tells the story of an isolated Michigan town that becomes the flashpoint for some of the principal ideological debates of our day.

When a libertarian organization selects the town as its flagship community, hundreds of its members migrate and settle within the town’s borders. The resulting clash with local townspeople is violent and impassioned, even as the line that divides the two sides increasingly blurs.

Scott is currently the Document Delivery coordinator at Ferris Library for Information, Technology, and Education. He is also a reference librarian.

Sohn is an assistant professor at the College of Pharmacy.

Sohn’s research focuses on the relationship between pharmacotherapy and health outcomes, pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, informatics, and pharmaceutical policy. In many research projects, she deals with large-scale data including i3 Invision Data Mart (IVDM), Medicaid, and national health care survey data.

POSTER Disrupting Disruptive Student Behavior With

Targeted Outreach Activities (Co-Author: KermitCanfield, M.)

The Ferris Library of Information, Technology and Education (FLITE) was plagued by troublesome student behaviors such as throwing things, leaving food messes, and sharing loud music. Many of these behaviors became inspiration for outreach events sponsored by FLITE. The theory was that rather than censor student actions in the library, the energy that created those behaviors could be harnessed to devise great outreach activities with real appeal to students.

Brenda Sipe, Director of Continuing Studies Sipe is the Director of Continuing Studies at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University. Holding a BFA from Grand Valley State University and MFA from Michigan State University, she has taught widely at the college level and at Interlochen Arts Camp. She is a diverse and communityoriented artist, and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education through Ferris State University’s DCCL program.

SCHOLARLY ARTICLE Atypical Antipsychotic Initiation

and the Risks of Type II Diabetes in Children and Adolescents (Co-Authors: Blumenschein, K., Moga, D.C. & Talbert, J.) The study estimated the risk of type II diabetes in children and adolescents initiating antipsychotic therapy. It was found that children and adolescents who use an antipsychotic medication had a twice higher risk of developing diabetes within six months of initiating drug when compared with non-users. Considering that diabetes is a chronic condition that may persist for the rest of a person’s life, it is critical to justify the antipsychotic treatment with accurate diagnosis and clinical evidence.

SCHOLARLY ARTICLE Mental Disorder Comorbidity and In-Hospital

Mortality Among Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction (Co-Authors: Moga, D.C. & Talbert, J.) This study examined the association between mental disorder comorbidity and in-hospital mortality, and whether subgroups of mental disorder comorbidity have differential impacts on in-hospital mortality in acute myocardial infarction patients.

In results, patients with schizophrenia were associated with increased in-hospital mortality. Major affective disorder and other mental disorders were not statistically significant.

Transitional Structures was a two-person exhibition featured at Jasper Arts Center on the campus of Vincennes University in Indiana. The work centered around themes of flight with both artists exhibiting repetitive and obsessive detail in their works.

Both artists presented gallery talks on their work and workshops with high school students.

Gregory Paul Vander Kooi, Professor

Stermer is the Gallery Director at Ferris State University overseeing both the Art Gallery and the Card Wildlife Education Center. She began her career as the Art Gallery Director in 1999. Stermer completed a Masters of Fine Art in Painting at Kendall College of Art & Design, and a BIS degree with a major in Studio Fine Art with a minor in Art History from Ferris State University.

Vander Kooi’s current responsibilities include faculty member, Deputy Director of the Ferris State University’s Law Enforcement Academy, and the Graduate Coordinator of Criminal Justice Masters program. As a retired Michigan State Police Post Commander, he is acutely aware of the need to reduce the recidivism rates of young offenders. Vander Kooi earned his PhD from Western Michigan University in Educational Leadership.

This series came from an assignment that Stermer gave herself. A favorite playtime activity for her children was a bucket of small plastic animals. She had discarded most of these toys but they came back to her. After a second hip surgery, walking became part of her daily physical therapy. One day she found a small plastic giraffe.

Ram arrived during a walk along Lake Michigan. These small gifts reminded her of the other-world that could be conjured with the imagination. Her first painting was Ram.

Recidivism Rates in a Rural Michigan County – A Local Perspective

This article investigates the merits of one rural Michigan County diversion program.

This program’s objective is to provide an alternative to formal state intervention, which is cost efficient and still an effective means of dealing with the delinquent youth. The actual program is a four-month long series which focuses on education, decision-making, team building, and prevention.

Michael S. Vasicek, Assistant Professor

Stone is currently an Associate Professor of Social Work, having previously served for six years as an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Ferris State University. Her research interests include exploring the ways in which professionals define their work and pedagogical strategies for improving student learning.

Vasicek is an Assistant Professor in the School of Criminal Justice with 32 years of law enforcement experience. He retired as an Undersheriff from the Midland County Sheriff’s Office and has supervised patrol, court security, animal control, detective work, and corrections. He has an EdD from Wayne State University, a MA from Saginaw Valley State University, and a BS from Ferris State University.

Faced with scrutiny by the government over student loans, colleges continue to search for ways to keep students engaged and enrolled in their programs. There is increasing concern over the access of education for all. In many fields of study, there has been a push for career-based education. They propose that a curriculum focused on student learning, coupled with career-based courses, will help ensure college success and successful entry into the workplace.

Natalie Wetzel, Assistant Professor

Vizina-Roubal has an MSW from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and is currently working on completing her Doctorate of Social Work from the University of St. Thomas/St. Catherine’s in St. Paul, Minnesota. She has been teaching full-time for seven years. Her areas of interest are technology use in social work practice. Vizina-Roubal teaches the Micro Counseling and Policy Advocacy classes in the MSW program. She is also the field coordinator for the BSW program in Traverse City.

Wetzel is a transdisciplinary artist working in collaboration with visual artists, musicians, architects, physicists, and the global community. She is a creative director, object maker, performer, U.S. Correspondent to Tribe Magazine, operator of multidisciplinary create space The Moon, and Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Sculpture at Kendall College of Art and Design. She is interested in denying power to illogical boundaries through non violent, creative means and challenging thresholds for personal growth.

This workshop reviewed the state-of-the-art of teaching technology-enhanced therapy options in a variety of traditional and technology-enhanced ways. Tradeoffs in teaching online interviewing techniques in face-to-face, hybrid and online classroom situations were illustrated and discussed. Various modalities were compared and contrasted including voice only, text only, and video with voice.

This was an immersive, transdisciplinary global art experience and live filmed performance, with live streaming of event to satellite events through UK based Tribe Magazine.

Fathima Wakeel, Assistant Professor Wakeel is an Assistant Professor in the Public Health Program.

She received her PhD in Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles and her Master of Public Health (MPH) and BA degree in Chemistry at University of South Florida. She completed her postdoctoral training at the UW Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. She has had 14 years of academic and research training in public health.

Her research focuses on racial/ethnic and SES disparities in maternal and child health.

Among Low Socioeconomic Status Pregnant Women: Findings from a Qualitative Pilot Study (Co-Authors: Emmerich, M., Njoku, A., Robert, S. & Witt, W.P.) Maternal stress has been shown to contribute to SES disparities in adverse maternal and child health (MCH) outcomes. Personal capital is a set of protective internal and social resources that may help women cope with or reduce their exposure to stress.

As little is known about how its conceptualization may differ across SES levels, they aimed to explore the salient components of personal capital among pregnant women in various SES levels, using a pilot qualitative study.

Mark Wilson, Player Development Coordinator

R. Brad Yarhouse, Assistant Professor

Wilson is the Player Development Coordinator in the PGA Golf Management Program at Ferris State University. He has served as a referee at over 50 Major Golf Championships and eight Ryder Cup matches. Wilson has been elected to the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame, the Michigan Section PGA Hall of Fame, and the Grand Rapids, MI Sports Hall of Fame.

Yarhouse is a practicing animation artist teaching at Kendall College of Art and Design in Digital Media and the Visual and Critical Studies MA program. His animated films have been shown internationally in festivals. His essays on contemporary animation and comics have been published in peer-reviewed journals including the International Journal for Comic Art. He speaks regularly on these topics at conferences around the world.

SCHOLARLY ARTICLE The Danger of Tree Roots This article involves a ruling that Wilson made during the second round of the 2015 Masters Tournament. Padraig Harrington, of Ireland, played a tee shot on the 17th hole that came to rest in the pine straw to the left of the fairway. Thinking that an exposed tree root might be immediately in front of his ball, Harrington requested that he be allowed to “probe” with a ball mark repair tool to determine whether such a root was present. This is permitted under the Rules of Golf.

Danielle C. Wyckoff, Assistant Professor Originally from the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia, Wyckoff currently lives and works in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She is an artist and an educator, teaching at Kendall College of Art and Design. Her work investigates how loving or losing love allows us to empathize with each other, and her work often refers to water. Since moving to Grand Rapids, she has become obsessed with Lake Michigan and finds her way to its shores as often as possible.

PRESENTATION Comic Media in New Mediums:

Dancing on the Head of Closure

Comics provide a sense of motion that requires participation in order to bring to life.

His hypothesis expands on ideas and definitions put forward by Scott McCloud, Bart Beaty, and others. By further exploring this, he believes people can develop a deeper understanding of closure as its own interactive force within comics and how it can be applied in unique, novel forms, within the metamedium of electricomics and other hybrids yet to be discovered.

PRESENTATION Motion Comics: Experimenting with a Metamedium As comics are translated into the digital realm, they take on the characteristics of the new medium such as, numerical representation, variability, and transcoding. The transparency of the medium of comics is disrupted by the fusion of the plasticity of new media. How does this impact the user experience? The key concern of this research was whether two very different methods of thinking about time and space can be married together to create a metamedium without weakening its power of closure.

ART EXHIBIT emerging, dissolving A solo exhibition at Soltesz Fine Art in Portland, OR, including an installation and a collection of works on paper. The installation included collected stories about love, handwritten on paper and sewn together creating scrolls. These scrolls were then hung in the space, creating loops, allowing viewers to read parts of the stories. Some of the scrolls dipped into a pool of red salt water. The works on paper are from a series called “Lessons from Lakes” and are mixed media on handmade paper.

PUBLIC ART COMMISSION Surroundings Surroundings, installed in the Park City Library in Park City, UT, showcases collected stories about PC from locals. These stories are screenprinted onto panels in the shape of the mountains surrounding the area and are mounted on the wall. Suspended in front of the panels, metal discs spin, reflect light, and cast shadows, referring to the city’s silver-mining past. This work honors how a community is made up as much by the people as the landscape, and a library’s vital role in it.

What do educators think they know about schizophrenia? Have they simply lumped all mental illness into one homogeneous category so large as to be effectively meaningless? This paper takes a personalized look at the issues faced by those coping with schizophrenia and moreover, makes suggestions on how to create a more inclusive educational environment for all students.

Gregory Robert Zimmerman, Academic Department Head Zimmerman has been involved in healthcare and higher education for the past 31 years. He has experience providing acute care for sports related injuries from secondary school students to professional-level athletes. Zimmerman was also one of the founding members of the sports medicine “industrial athlete� concept, having been one of the first sports medicine specialists to be employed by General Motors Corporation to treat/rehabilitate assembly line worker injuries.

The world is smaller through the rapid exchange of information and ease of intercontinental travel. One need only look at the potential for communicable diseases to spread from one country to another in a matter of hours or the speed at which diagnostic images can be transmitted and examined with a diagnosis returned from halfway around the world, to understand the change. Zimmerman shared leading edge advancements while highlighting continuing challenges society faces in the global healthcare community.
