FEROSH SPRING '20

t’s my real-life birthday! This day is a very happy time for me as well as a sad one. It’s happy because of all the fond memories I have of spending my birthday with my mother, father, friends, and family. I’m sad only because of my mother’s passing in 2015 from breast cancer. Without her love, support, and breath of life, I would not be here today. Every issue of Ferosh I make is for her, truly. When I feel unmotivated, tired, or lacking in confidence about people’s willingness to participate, I remember her. She was a steadfast, honest, and glorious woman in whose footsteps I hope to follow . So, when I celebrate my birthday today, I will be celebrating it with her as we publish our 15th issue of Ferosh—a magazine that she so loved. Besides that bit of news, I also sympathize and empathize with those who are struggling with COVID-19 around the world. Second Life™ is a community of citizens from around the world. As much as we are all affected in our first lives, so are we in our second lives. I find

myself wondering how my online friends in Italy or China are doing. I watch the news for what’s happening in Brazil or the United Kingdom. Then I remember how lucky I am to have a platform where I can communicate freely with these friends and see how they are doing. I’m blessed to have a place to escape and socialize; it makes social distancing not so terrible an experience.

As a healthcare provider, I’ve been on the front lines screening and testing people for COVID-19. I come home exhausted. I’m stressed and tired, but I can’t sleep at night. It’s the people in our creative department, my friends, and family here who motivate me to keep going. This issue of Ferosh is two weeks late, but I’m sure that because of these unprecedented times, I can be forgiven. I hope the minimalistic themes in this issue provide you with peace and serenity. We’ve also featured a few special articles, because.... why not! So, please enjoy.

nd in a blink of an eye, the world came to a standstill…

First and foremost, my heart goes out to anyone who has been impacted by the virus, either directly or indirectly. My thoughts are especially with those who are sick, to whom I extend my heartfelt wishes for a full recovery.

About a week ago, the stress of being on the front line took a toll on me and I broke down in a stream of tears. I was at the point to which I wanted to give up, because what is the use of trying hard if we don’t have the resources or the manpower we need? Unbeknownst to some, although medical professionals are used to the idea of death, it takes a piece of you little by little… Though we put on a brave face, calling someone to break the news that their loved one passed away is a hard pill to swallow—specially since our job is to try and nurse them back to good health. I consider myself fortunate for having supportive family, friends, and a strong partner who I can always rely on. I came to a realization that I shouldn’t waste my time and energy on things that are beyond my control and instead focus on the things that I can. Though I still have rough days,

15 | SPRING ISSUE | FEROSH

it is slowly and steadily becoming more manageable, and I am hoping that this is a good sign that better days are up ahead.

To my fellow front-liners, hang in there! Remember that you are not in this alone and, most importantly, that you have to make sure that you are taking utmost care of yourself as well. Set aside a few moments during your busy day to allow yourself to breathe and to give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done. This time is proving to be challenging. Amidst the fear and panic, we are called upon to rise up and be our best selves, with patience, understanding, and compassion. But most of all, these times challenge us to connect like never before. Individually and as a whole, we all have a responsibility and a small part to play in triumphing over the adversity this crisis has created. We have to believe that with our combined efforts, we will begin to recover and emerge stronger than ever. Peace. Hope. Love.

Creative Assistant's Message

L

ife has changed a whole lot lately. The world is in the unknown once more, and sometimes it can feel just too much. If ever there was a silver lining during this time, it would have to be from the amazing Second Life™ community: a community that has taken it upon itself to create a safe place for those who need it and expounded upon the #TogetherAtHome hashtag to give back to the residents of this virtual world. How beautiful it is to see so many people from around the world coming together and helping one another. Something as simple as just being there for each other can help immensely. Among our ranks are people who battle this enemy daily, those who swore an oath to do no harm, those who are risking their own health to help their fellow man. I’m talking about the front-liners and how much endless gratitude we should be giving to them: healthcare workers, grocery store workers, policemen and women, firemen and women, sanitation workers—anyone who is currently putting others before themselves to keep society going.

These people are the true heroes in this day and age, taking on this invisible enemy day in and day out, all while being the caregivers and providers for their own families back at home and at work: families they may not get to physically touch and

26

hold for quite some time.

It will all be worth it, though, when we can find our footing in this new, post-viral world. A world that will need to think a little bit differently, but still with the guise of each other somewhere in our thoughts. We need to do our part now; nobody wants this kind of global event to happen again.

So, if you know of someone who is an essential worker or in the health profession—both considered front-liners— let them know that what they are doing is admirable, that they are what is keeping us going. Let them know that when their work is done, it will be up to us to care for them, to make sure we don’t allow this virus to threaten lives again, to stay home when we need to, and to listen to science. Because nobody wants to go through this multiple times.

When we are able to dance again in the public parks or enjoy our favorite festivals, just remember who made this possible. Remember those who sacrificed so that you could leave your houses once again. These people are called heroes. Remember to treat them with kindness and support.

GBTH CORNER:

W

ith the ever changing state of communications technologies and virtual interpersonal relations, it is easy to find oneself consuming media in ways unprecedented up until this moment in human and art history. Now with COVID-19 forcing the majority of us to hit the brakes and reconsider how we share and consume content, we are finding ourselves in a period of self and collective reinvention. One could argue the only way to stay afloat and connected within the fast-paced evolution of digital technologies, services, and the subsequent artwork, media, design that emerges from these frameworks is staying adaptive, open-minded, and fluid.

There is always something unexpected, new, and often completely beyond our grasp within these spheres. To behold the creative fruits of virtual and new media based artworks is to allow them the

30

unique spaces and representation they require, with demands always in flux. This is the ethos of the Grab By The Horns project (GBTH) in Second Life (SL), managed by Brazilian-based artist and curator Marina Münter (vivresavie), and Vancouver-based interdisciplinary designer Smoopa Spinotti (smoopa.spinotti).

The project's most recent exhibition, “Real Problems” by Tommy Bruce, exemplifies the versatility of virtual galleries in the now moment. Resulting from the artist's desire to share his master’s thesis work, otherwise inaccessible IRL due to social-distancing and closure of many offline art spaces, including Bruce’s studio and initial gallery space. SL, and GBTH provided a venue to exhibit accessible by anyone with an internet connection and SL installed, maybe far less exclusive than galleries limited by a real life street address. DiXmiX Galler y Presents: Absinthe Holoway

ixmix Gallery showcases some of the most talented artists and creators in Second Life™. Over the next few months, the gallery is scheduled to house impressive experiences created by Brysen Miller, Melusina Parkin, Paola Mills, and Dixmix himself. On April 18th, 2020, the Dixmix Gallery opened to Brysen Miller’s Black Gallery showcase. His exhibit paired his poetry with visual art and atmospheric sound. The ambient audio placed patrons in the proper mindset in which to read each poem. While reading, visitors gleaned nuanced emotional impressions from the photography. In total, Brysen’s exhibit generated a truly multi-dimensional experience that challenged art gallery conventions. It is our hope that readers were able to catch this wonderful exhibition when it was showcased. The overarching theme of Dixmix’s oeuvre is the human condition through a textural lens. This theme is explored through various means. Not wanting to overly influence patrons, Dixmix gave few details about the exhibition and instead encouraged patrons to go see it and create their own narratives

around the work. This interactive, projective process is one of the things that Dixmix enjoys most about creating: allowing everyone to create their own art, in a sense, from his work, and to invent their own theories about how his exhibition came to be, never truly knowing its exact origins.

Absinthe Holloway’s exhibition will open May 9th, 2020. This exhibition explores teenage love and emotion through one of her favorite role-play characters, Eden Petrovski. The undertones and lighting of her exhibit convey the spectrum of human emotion. It is an exhibition designed to ignite love, hope, romance, and memories of endless saltwater summers.

These are all the exhibits open for the next few months at the Dixmix Gallery. We implore the reader to check out these amazing artists and support them in any way possible. Given the current climate of the world, self-enrichment through cultural immersion to any degree will do the mind some good. "Eden was wild, carefree, emotional, and full of life. A flowerchild and potion maker. She captured the hearts of so many. This is for her. " -Ferosh Writer: Taylor Holloway

Elizabeth's Exploration Journal Garrigua

"We wanted to give a view of Southern France, mixing beach, coast and the land too with lavender fields and steep terrains." -Elise Mersereau With this inspiration, builder Terry Fotherington has created this beautiful little slice of France nestled into a peaceful seaside town. Upon landing, the first thing you notice is the abundance of color... buildings painted in bright Mediterranean hues, hanging planters filled with flowers, and palm trees at every turn. The vintage cars, cast iron railings, and terra-cotta roofing gives the feeling you have stepped back in time.

The Main Street landing point will lead you along a busy cobblestone street that passes the large marina and an adorable little trailer park before winding around the south east corner of the sim towards an open pier that hosts flying flocks of seagulls and crashing waves. The sim is filled with detail and a multitude of hidden corners to discover, you can revisit Garrigua frequently and discover something new each and every time. A photographer's smorgasbord, a relaxing vacation spot, a great place to sit and chat with a friend... Garrigua has

36

something for everyone.

On my first visit to the sim, I immediately fell in love with the adorable little tailer park. Just like the rest of the sim, it is filled with fun details, bright colors,

and reminders of childhood. Camp fires and boating supplies, floats and fishing supplies, this little corner of Garribgua has it's own character as well as fitting right into the feeling of the sim as a whole.

Lost Lagoon

"Lonely swamp Island. Witnesses of bygone days and paradise for those who seek solitude and nature." - Mark and Jana Knight

Lost lagoon is a lush hideaway location reminiscent of an exclusive South Pacific resort or private island, and it more than lives up to the description given by its creator/owners Mark and Jana Knight. Mark's landscaping skills and Jana's beautiful eye for interior design are a match made in heaven. "... we work together hand in hand. Lost Lagoon is our baby, and our home." - Jana Knight

The well thought out design begins at the landing spot where you will be greeted by a smiling newspaper vendor. Instead of landing visitors in the middle of this paradise, we are given an introductory view of Lost Lagoon as you walk along the pier to the beach, displaying the beautiful sim design and landscaping. Walking around the lagoon itself, one can find several secluded spots to sit and lounge. Lost Lagoon is nearing its second birthday, but Jana and Mark keep their creation fresh and up to date with the latest items. Each interior has a character of its own, yet falls in sync with the exterior perfectly and lends to the ultimate relaxation experience. "It is particularly important to both of us to offer a peaceful sim. Everyone should feel welcome and have a good time here." - Jana Knight

40

A winding trail that leads to a long-planked walkway, above the crashing waves, brings you to a magical clearing in the ruins above the rocks and sea and is yet another peek into the imagination that led to the creation of this little slice of paradise in the ocean. Mark and Jana have a long-term plan of moving to a full sim which

will allow them to expand with the larger prim allowance and continue to offer a place that is both relaxing and a feast for the photographer's eye.

Tonarino

"I wanted to reproduce the nostalgic countryside scenery and atmosphere of Japan with a sense of reality." - Non Akimoto

Tonarino was originally created as a "playground for friends", to be an authentic second Japanese home. You will see familiar items from the more popular Japanese creators along with many personal touches that make this place both authentic and original. Full of color and life, visiting this sim is like taking a day trip through rural Japan.

Upon Landing at Tonarino Station, you are greeted by a small group of feral cats who are too busy lazing in the sun to take much notice of your arrival. You can take a stroll down the road, stop for a coffee, visit the laundromat/arcade, or continue on to the fish market where you will find an array of fish, fresh from the ocean, ready for purchase. Traveling south again, be sure not to miss the tight winding staircase that leads up to the shrine. This is Non's favorite part of her creation and if you find it you will understand why. Tightly packed with well lived in shacks, the scene at the top of the steps is where Non says "I think we could have expressed the Japanese feeling of life." If that feeling is peace and beauty, then this is it. Bright colors, swirling sakura leaves and a breathtaking view of the sim. Bikes, mopeds, sakura, fresh fish, and farmland, this sim has a little bit of everything you can imagine the Japanese countryside would hold. As described by Non, it is "a

Fleur de Sel

I love to create spaces that feel natural, relaxing, and can also be photo friendly. Fleur de Sel is my fourth sim design and I have done my best to implement the best features of my previous works while adding new design items and landscaping techniques. My biggest source of inspiration is Tyler, my partner, and talks with him of atmosphere, mood, and places we would feel easy and relaxed.... the feeling of being on vacation. Scarlett Creative, Minimal, Nutmeg and Soy are just a few of my favorite creators and you will find several of their works around the sim.

I placed the landing area on the south east corner, a sort of miniature seaport, with a bridge that leads to the mainland. In the landing you can find rezzers for bikes and pogo sticks, scooters, and a ball rezzer for couples who own the Vista animations walking hud. Flying has been disabled to encourage visitors to walk, hop, or ride and enjoy the journey to their favorite spot, but I will add a teleport board eventually and the group does allow you to ignore the landing point. My favorite spot is a little retreat area I created on the hill above lavender beach. Using a beautiful Scarlet Creative build (slightly modified), it was the first area I finished and I still love to sit there and listen to the wonderful soundscape created by my

52

friend Electric Monday.

The center of sim holds a small town that is still a work in progress. A pub, a supermarket and one of several hidden areas I have integrated in the sim design for visitors to discover and enjoy. Just to the east of town, you can rezz a peddle boat and visit “little Venice The north east coast of Fleur de Sel will soon be home to two rental units. Fleur de Sel is a full region which also holds Fusion, a platform city you can Tp to from the main landing area. It is also home to my pose store and coming in the fall, Nantes Gallery. The sim is open to everyone but you will need the Nantes group for rezzing and setting home on the sim, it costs $L500 to join the group. Also, here is the flickr group. Vally Lavender's Valium Sea FEROSH | SPRING ISSUE | 15

“This sim was built by a wonderful person and I walked with her every step of the way and I learned so much from her.” – Vally Lavender

P

hotography in Second Life™ is so ingrained in our ritualistic nature that many find it hard to come up with new ideas or modes of expression. The image of what you want to create may be there, stuck in your mind, but the execution may be difficult. Simply finding the resources to translate your idea into a photograph for Flickr can seem tremendously daunting. Thankfully, through sheer ingenuity, residents started to create spaces for the express purpose of photography.

Some sims are crafted for a single purpose, to give photographers a canvas. One such sim is Valium Sea, created by resident Vally Lavender as a space for escape, relaxation, recovery, and enjoyment. Valium Sea is a lovely homestead for those who wish to get away from the mundane routine of their virtual lives. Thanks to its minimalistic approach, this location allows for a virtually lag-free photographic experience and imparts the serenity of a private beach. A good description of this sim is a coastal shoreline of well designed excellence. Its crisp and clean layout was decorated by the talented Jacky MacPherson, whom Vally refers to as a true terraformer and visionary. Vally’s heart and soul has gone into Valium Sea, and she made it extremely clear that this home is not going anywhere anytime soon. One step into Valium Sea is all it takes to see why that is: when you teleport in, there is just this sense of calm. This calm may be a result of the openness of the homestead, of being able to see from one end to the other without needing to cam over. Possibly, it could be the soundscape, evocative of a coastal beach: waves crash against the sandy shore; insects and other creatures scattered around the beach lend ambient noise.

FEROSH | SPRING ISSUE | 15

Or maybe it’s the refreshing quality a place like Valium Sea offers to those who seek it: a refuge from the daily routine, or a place to go when you just want to relax and have a virtual vacation for a good bit of time. Lord knows that given the current state of the world, a place where you can actually relax within the comforts of your own home is a godsend.

So, whether you are a photographer who wishes to take photos in a lag-free yet exquisitely decorated sim or just someone who wants a change of scenery, we implore you to check out Valium Sea. We know Vally wholeheartedly opens her arms to each and every person looking for some relief.

And that’s not to mention the added perks of joining a homestead group, such as buffer from unwanted spam, privacy if you wish, the ability to rezz, and admission to other sims like the Broken Vessel, which currently has an “Art in the Park” exhibit by Elizabeth Jewell. Soda Pop!

DJ SODA SULLIVAN

Her crown is the pair of headphones she wears on her head as she steadies herself on her throne of music, looking out amongst the sea of pixels dancing and gesturing “soda pop” in waves. Her profile reads, “mischief maker, music creator and an instigator. Old school, new school, skipping school but not a fool. Beat mixer, time shifter, spirit lifter, gender bender and equal opportunity offender.” Always smooth and refreshing, Soda Pop Sullivan fills me in on her journey of being a DJ in SL as we retreat to her digs by the water at her virtual home. Lill (fifi.noel): Hi!

Soda (sodasullivan): Howdy!

Lill: So then that was it, the career of Soda Pop took off! Was there anyone you followed who stuck out to you early on? Soda: It did - and I loved it. I was shocked at how much DJing in SL is just like DJing in real life. The same rush is there. I still enjoy the crowd! I would not say there is anyone I "followed" but it wasDJ “Rizzy Koston" that was the one who gave me my first real chance, so I will always be grateful for that. Lill: I did come to a few of your gigs and was amazed at the turnout! You are very much loved in the Second Life community. Shout-out to Rizzy Koston!

Soda: Well thanks! I hope you had fun at the gig! I have worked hard at it and I love making a crowd happy. The most awesome thing for me is when a total stranger Soda (sodasullivan): You too! will slip me an IM saying "I just had so much fun" or "that was some of the best music ever". That just makes Lill: I see you have been a resident of Second Life for my day! 9 years, can you tell me about your first experiences here? Did you dive right into the whole DJ scene? Lill: So, what do you have currently cycling on repeat on your playlist? Soda: Not immediately and it was almost by accident. I had been here a few months and a friend knew I had Soda: Parliament, Earth Wind & Fire, Zapp, and of some real-life DJ experience. I grew up in the "rave course Prince is a genius. I love the turntable DJ's. I scene" and did little DJing with friends. We were like grew up with Run-DMC, The Beastie Boys, and Public this little gang of "candy kids". Nothing big at all, just Enemy. As for more recent stuff, there is a young people's parties and stuff. But my friend needed a fill- American female singer by the name "LP" that I in DJ at her place for a weekend and [she] gave me a encourage everyone to listen to, she is great! Oh! and chance and the rest is history! most people know I have a love for everything U2. Lill: Hey girl! So nice to finally meet you!

Lill: What is one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you hear it? Soda: Ha! Anyone that has heard me DJ more than once knows this. It is a mix of Taylor Swift's "Love Story" by Digital Dog, and that new Lady Gaga song, "Stupid Love” is ingrained in my skull; it is a little piece of dance pop heaven. Stupid Love is stupid good and just what we need right now. Lill: Nice! I love Gaga. What is one track that got popular that you can't stand? Soda: That is a tough one, as far as one song. I am not totally sure I get the huge love for Billie Eillish, but music touches each of us in different ways so that is cool.

Lill: What is one genre you think doesn't get the attention it deserves?

Soda: That kind of goes by to my current exploration of the 70's era music. Before there was programming and electronics. The funk artist and even the country artist, like Johnny Cash. They had to get up there and PERFORM! When you listen to what they did with what they had to work with, it is amazing. There is an organic sound there that I think a lot of new pop artists

or DJs do not take advantage of. This is terrible for a DJ to say, but sometimes I think we rely too much on the programming and sounding absolutely perfect. Something I am TOTALLY guilty of by the way. Lill: Before we wrap this up, can you tell the readers what you like to do in your free time when you aren't Djing?

Soda: My friends have been teaching me games, or they are TRYING to. I have been in here 9 years and never learn[ed] to play Greedy! I love "projects". Especially decorating or landscaping. I’m actually kind of shy and to myself when not DJ’ing. That surprises people, but it is true. I still get extremely nervous every time I DJ, just like when I started in real life. It is great to make people happy though. I think we have so much at our fingertips in here, it is fun to see what you can do with it. I have sort of unwritten rule about SL. It is only going to give you back what you put into it, so get creative. Lill: Thank you for taking time to do this interview with us today! I'm so happy I got a chance to talk with you! If you want to plug your group name for any readers who are interested in your set times, please feel free! Ferosh Writer: Lilly Noel

Are you insane? FEROSH | SPRING ISSUE | 15

L

egal Insanity and MIU (the female line) are two of my most favorite clothing lines in Second Life. The designer, Datrip Blackbart, has a keen sense of fashion as well as a firm command of human anatomy, which me ans that when you buy his mesh clothing, they fit your avatar re ally well; special care taken to rigging. Both his brands are for consumers who favor bright, bold colors, excellent texturing quality, and amazing mesh fit. Most items in his current line are targeted toward a casual, urban crowd. However, many of his items can be mixed with others to dress up for just the right touch of casual chic. And, with the right touches, you may even find items to ignite your in ner flower child.
