WASH AWAY RACISM Letter From The EIC & Guest Editor Féroce Magazine since day one has welcomed diverse editorials with open arms. I did not think that was enough. I witness so many talented artists struggling to get the recognition they deserve, models who just “don’t fit” into the briefs, black-owned businesses being ignored, and worst of all, members of the community being completely left out on purpose. Most of the time I believe that change starts from home. I have decided to use this platform as an opportunity to show the world what I and many others believe it to be missing. My younger brother Ivan Renton - and guest editor of the issue - is 13 years old and even at such a young age recognises the disparity when it

comes to representation in the arts. It is so important for young POC to know that there’s so many amazing creative people out there. He has helped me curate this issue. All profits from the sales of the POC TAKEOVER series will be donated to charities fighting against racism across the globe, so please be sure to buy a digital copy to make a donation - details are in the bios. This series includes past and present diverse editorials and features. I will keep this letter short, for I believe it’s not my turn to speak anymore. Please let the following content speak for itself. Share it wide. Amplify the voices and the work of a community that is criminally undervalued. Ivan & Daina Renton

FROM THE STREETS TO THE PENTHOUSE Actor: DonShea Stringer Photographer: Andre Donley This Urban shoot took place in beautiful Downtown Louisville, Kentucky. The photographer and I wanted to embrace the double life an African-American Man can lead. On one hand he can run the Board Room as a C.E.O & on the other hand... We can run the streets, with the same business mind as a fortune 500 company.

GRACE

“A recent article in Victoria’s Secret - ‘What Is Sexy’ - was under fire for being ‘young, white and thin’. To me, it is remarkable as a photographer of colour and also to have worked with models of colour such as gorgeous Eden Banon here, that we are still stuck with the cliches, or shall I say lack of acceptance! Unless the bastions of so called “Beauty” take a better stand on diversity there is little hope that this white wash attitude in our fashion business will ever change. But as collaborators and content creators we can propose a change by working with more people of colour. There is so much beauty in colour, let there be more!”

MADAME WALKER

Stylist/Model: Khalil Cole @Independent Photographer: Julian Jamaal Jones “This beautiful editorial is inspired by Madame C. J. Walker, the world’s first black female entrepreneur. Born Sarah Breedlove, she created hair products specifically for African American hair and steadily became one of the first POC self-made millionaires. “Sarah Breedlove developed a scalp disorder that caused her to lose much of her hair, and she began to experiment with both home remedies and store-bought hair care treatments in an attempt to improve her condition. In 1905, Breedlove was hired as a commission agent by Annie Turnbo Malone—a successful, black, hair care product entrepreneur—and she moved to Denver, Colorado. While there, Breedlove’s husband Charles helped her create advertisements for a hair care treatment for African Americans that she was perfecting. Her husband also encouraged her to use the more recognizable name “Madam C.J. Walker,” by which she was thereafter known. In 1907, Walker and her husband traveled around the South and Southeast promoting her products and giving lecture demonstrations of her “Walker Method”—involving her own formula for pomade, brushing and the use of heated combs. As profits continued to grow, in 1908 Walker opened a factory and a beauty school in Pittsburgh, and by 1910, when Walker transferred her business operations to Indianapolis, the Madame C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company had become wildly successful, with profits that were the

modern-day equivalent of several million dollars. In Indianapolis, the company not only manufactured cosmetics, but trained sales beauticians. These “Walker Agents” became well known throughout the black communities of the United States. In turn, they promoted Walker’s philosophy of “cleanliness and loveliness” as a means of advancing the status of African-Americans. An innovator, Walker organized clubs and conventions for her representatives, which recognized not only successful sales, but also philanthropic and educational efforts among African-Americans. In 1913, Walker and Charles divorced, and she traveled throughout Latin America and the Caribbean promoting her business and recruiting others to teach her hair care methods. While her mother traveled, A’Lelia Walker helped facilitate the purchase of property in Harlem, New York, recognizing that the area would be an important base for future business operations. In 1916, upon returning from her travels, Walker moved to her new townhouse in Harlem. From there, she would continue to operate her business, while leaving the dayto-day operations of her factory in Indianapolis to its forelady. Walker quickly immersed herself in Harlem’s social and political culture. She founded philanthropies that included educational scholarships and donations to homes for the elderly, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the National Conference on Lynching, among other organizations focused on improving the lives of

African-Americans. She also donated the largest amount of money by an African-American toward the construction of an Indianapolis YMCA in 1913. Madam C.J. Walker died of hypertension on May 25, 1919, at age 51, at the estate home she had built for herself in Irvington-on-Hudson, New York. At the time of her death, Walker was sole owner of her business, which was valued at more than $1 million. Her personal fortune was estimated at between $600,000 and $700,000. Today, Walker is widely credited as one of the first American women to become a self-made millionaire. Walker left one-third of her estate to her daughter, A’Lelia Walker—who would also become well-known as an important part of the cultural Harlem Renaissance—and the remainder to various charities. Walker’s funeral took place at her home, Villa Lewaro, in Irvington-on-Hudson, which was designated a National Historic Landmark, and she was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York. In 1927, the Walker Building, an arts center that Walker had begun work on before her death, was opened in Indianapolis. An important African-American cultural center for decades, it is now a registered National Historic Landmark. In 1998, the United States Postal Service issued a stamp of Madam C.J. Walker as part of its “Black Heritage” series.” Taken from Biography.com [October 2017] A&E Publishing.

“My

name is Drew Kendrick, and I am a model based out of Atlanta, GA. I’ve been modeling for about 4years now, and it has been a roller coaster journey. The modeling industry is one of the toughest industries in the world as it is, but when you are a minority the battle is even harder. Being a black male model in the industry has been tough. The market for minorities is extremely limited compared to the market for Caucasians. Being a black model one thing I have noticed is that when you do see black models, they are typically very dark skin and typically have a very strong African look opposed to the way “black” or ‘African American” people look. Being an African American with a brown complexion, I feel the market is even smaller for us, which makes it more difficult in the industry. It’s as if the company’s want to scream, we use black people in our advertisements. However, it is a good time in the industry because the industry is changing. The market is opening for models of all ethnicities, colors, shapes, and sizes. Along with my battle of being black, I am also 5’9 so for the industry I am short so I have two disadvantages to face, but with all the change going on in the industry, I have hope. The industry still has far to go but it’s nice to see that change is happening. The most important thing for anyone chasing this dream is to make sure, to keep your head up and don’t let anyone stop you if this is what you truly love. Take every no that you receive and show people why it should have been a “HELL YES.” No matter what the industry says we’re all beautiful, and you can do anything you want to do. Work hard and show everyone how great you are! As minorities, we have always had to make people see how great we are, and this is no different. Above anything else, always remember;

“You have to be your own motivator... your own dreamer... and your own biggest fan... because no one will ever believe in you or your dreams as much as you will.” - Drew Kendrick

NEO TRIBAL

Stylist/CD/Photographer: Bashir Makeup Artist: Molly Haywood Model/Hair Stylist: Moe Neo Tribal is a story that alludes to the position that human beings will evolve to live in tribal society, as opposed to mass society, and thus will form social networks constituting new tribes which embrace high tech futures but draw on lifestyle attributes derived from the past. WASH AWAY

RACISM

Photographer: Peter DeVito Model: Selassie Cofie @ RED Model Management MUA: Charles Zambrano “Wash Away Racism” is an editorial that was inspired visually by two of Jean-Paul Goude’s famous images of Grace Jones and conceptually by the Black Lives Matter Movement. It is a commentary on how some people reacted by saying things like, “White Lives Matter”, “Blue Lives Matter”, “All Lives Matter”, etc., but how when someone says, “Black Lives Matter”, it does not disregard the worth of other lives. “Wash Away Racism” shows a model in whiteface and blueface, he gets in the shower, washes off the looks, and as the editorial goes on, what he truly looks like appears. All of this symbolizes how yes, we do all matter, but how at this current time, we are trying to reinforce the fact that Black Lives Matter in order to gain equal treatment for all minorities.
