Product Uses Fernox AF10 universal biocide is used to minimise the occurrence of bacterial and fungal growths in fully indirect domestic central heating and non-evaporative chilled water systems.

AF10 should be added in conjunction with a Fernox Protector F1 or antifreeze to prevent microbiological contamination. AF10 is also used to prevent the reoccurrence of jelly-like deposits (fungal growths) in feed and expansion cisterns. Gas produced by fermentation within systems may also be eliminated by the addition of AF10.

In single feed indirect cylinders, e.g. ‘Primatic’ or similar, potable water chemicals must be used.

Application and Dosage One 500ml bottle of AF10 treats a system up to 20 radiators/200 litres volume.

Add via Feed and Expansion tank or, for sealed systems, add via a radiator or filling loop using a Fernox injector.

Ensure that the system is also dosed with Protector F1.

For heavily fouled systems, firstly clean and flush thoroughly before dosing with Protector F1 and AF10.

For heavily contaminated expansion cisterns, empty and wipe clean the tank using a 1:50 solution of AF10 in water – wear suitable gloves and goggles during application, refer to the MSDS. Then refill the system, adding Fernox AF10 in combination with Protector F1.

Repeat applications of AF10 are recommended on an annual basis.

Product Uses Fernox Antifreeze Protector Alphi-11 is a combined antifreeze and inhibitor, which gives long term protection of domestic central heating systems against internal corrosion and limescale formation. It prevents corrosion of all metals found in these systems, i.e. ferrous metals, copper and copper alloys and aluminium. Fernox Antifreeze Protector Alphi-11 is compatible with all metals and materials commonly used in central heating systems.

For continued protection we recommend Protector levels are checked regularly (annually). The concentration of the product can be easily measured on site using a Fernox Protector Test Kit or by using a refractometer.

Physical Properties Fernox Antifreeze Protector Alphi-11 contains mono-propylene glycol.

Application and Dosage The minimum recommended “in-use” concentration of the product is 25% in order to ensure adequate corrosion protection. This concentration will protect down to -11°C. A concentration of 40% will protect down to -22°C. Antifreeze Protector Alphi-11 can be introduced via the feed and expansion tank or other suitable point of application, e.g. radiator, using a Fernox Injector. Introduce into the system after having drained a quantity of water at least equal to the amount of Alphi-11 to be added. Engage the circulating pump and have the system online for a few hours in order to achieve an even distribution.

Fernox Alphi-11 Protector is compatible with all metals and materials commonly used in central heating systems, including aluminium.

For continued protection we recommend Protector levels are checked regularly (annually). The concentration of the product can be easily measured on site using a Fernox Protector Test Kit or by using a refractometer.

The Fernox Cleaner F3/F5 Test Kit is designed to give rapid on-site analysis of the concentration of Fernox F3 or F5 Cleaner in central heating systems.

The maximum Cleaner F3/F5 levels quoted in the instructions is a maximum target level of ‘safe’ maximum levels of Cleaner F3/F5 allowable in the system after flushing.

The Cleaner F3/F5 Test Kit will also work in the presence of F1 Protector – allows post installation checks.

General Instructions 1. Add 5ml of system water to the graduated test vessel using the syringe provided.

2. Add 1 drop of Reagent 1 and swirl to mix. The solution turns purple.

3. Add Reagent 2 drop-wise with mixing until the sample turns to permanent light red or yellow/orange.

4. Now add Reagent 3 drop-wise with mixing until the colour changes back to purple permanently. Count the number of drops used.

5. Excessive cleaner residues are present if 16 or more drops are needed to affect the colour change.

LIMESCALE REMOVER DS-3      

Product Uses Fernox DS-3 is used for removing limescale from any type of water heater to restore its efficiency. It is safe to use with steel, stainless steel, cast iron, copper, brass, PVC, ABS rubber polythene and most plastic pipework.

Limitations: It should not be used with thin gauge or badly corroded aluminium, zinc, galvanised steel, acrylic (e.g. plastic kettles and baths) chromium plated or enamelled surfaces (e.g. baths), concrete and asbestos. When in doubt, check with the appliance manufacturer.

Physical Properties Fernox DS-3 contains Sulphamic acid with inhibitors, indicators and non-foaming surfactants.

Application and Dosage Fernox DS-3 should first be dissolved in hot water at the maximum concentration of 1 kg per 10 litres of water (10%) with a minimum in-use concentration of 250g per 10 litres of water (2.5%). Hot water will accelerate de-scaling but do not exceed 80°C. The de-scaling process will release carbon dioxide gas (CO2), which can cause foaming. Hence, space should be allowed for this before commencing work. A colour change from yellow, through green, to blue indicates the de-scaling power is exhausted. However, the major part of the solution's effort is expended when green is reached and if cold the final change to blue can take a long time. When de-scaling is complete, drain and rinse several times until no traces or odours remain.

DS-3 can be neutralised with Fernox System Neutraliser.

Note: In the case of de-scaling an entire hot water system please see overleaf.

Avoid release to the environment. IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Keep out of reach of children.

De-scaling an entire hot water system Instructions for use: De-scaling a domestic hot water system including the storage cylinder, immersion heater, pipework and taps: 1) Turn off boiler and/or the immersion heater.

2) Tie up the ball valve or isolate mains water supply to the cold water storage tank.

3) Open all hot water taps and drain the entire system. Close taps.

4) Fernox DS-3 should first be dissolved in warm water, at the maximum concentration of 1 kg per 10 litres of water, (minimum concentration is 250 g per 10 litres of water).

5) i) Connect a funnel to a suitable length of rubber or plastic tubing. The tubing should fit into (or onto) the cylinder feed connection on the inside of the cold water storage tank and the strong acid solution then introduced via the funnel, or:ii) Where the cold water storage tank serves the hot water cylinder only and no other appliance or outlet, the DS-3 solution can be introduced directly into the tank.

6) Refill the water system until the water level in the cold water storage tank is just covering the cylinder feed connection. This is to prevent over dilution of the acid solution of minimising the total amount of the water in the system.

7) Turn on the boiler and/or immersion heater and heat the acid solution in the hot water cylinder to a o o moderate temperature (50-60 C / 120-140 F) and keep at this temperature for a minimum of 4 hours (max 12 hours).

8) Open all hot water taps briefly every 10-15 minutes, allowing ½ - 1 pint of acid solution to run into a plastic container. This is because the acid solution will be neutralised by lime deposits within the pipework and slowly drawing off a small amount of solution will replace spent de-scaler within the pipes. Avoid contact with enamel baths and sinks etc.

9) Finally, turn off the boiler and immersion heater, and drain the hot water system completely. BALE OUT any residual water from the cold water storage tank as this may contain some DS-3 below the feedpipe connection.

10) When disposing of spent DS-3 solution it is best neutralised with Fernox Superconcentrate System Neutraliser.

11) Release the ball valve of the cold water storage tank and thoroughly rinse the entire hot water supply system, opening all hot water taps - Also rinse the cold water system (where applicable) as some acid may have entered via the cold water storage tank.

Fernox DS-3 does not leave any harmful deposits, and provided the system is properly rinsed, it may once again be used as normal. The application time and DS-3 concentration may be increased or repeated in the case of heavily scaled direct hot water boilers, immersion heaters, hot water cylinders and taps.

Application and Dosage For each 10 litres of solution required first dissolve 1 kg of DS-10 in a small quantity of warm water then add remaining water. This should provide a solution of sufficient strength to clean adequately a lightly contaminated heat exchanger in a few minutes. For cases where severe contamination of combustion surfaces has occurred, several units are to be cleaned, or where a reduction in the cleaning time is required, the strength of the solution may be increased to 20% w/v (i.e. 2 kg of powder per 10 litres of water). Neutralise prior to disposal using Fernox System Neutraliser added at a rate of 4 kg System Neutraliser to every 7 kg of DS-10 used.

Note: Fernox DS-10 must not be used with boilers employing aluminium heat exchangers. Refer to manufacturer's service literature for detailed instructions.

Fernox DS-10 must not be mixed with products containing nitrite or with bleaching products.

Health & Safety Fernox DS-10 is supplied in 7 kg containers. Flammable gas (Hydrogen) may be liberated in use: Do not smoke and remove all possible sources of ignition. Contact with metals, in particular zinc, aluminium, magnesium and steel will liberate this gas. Do not mix with other chemicals. Diluted products may only be mixed with Fernox System Neutraliser for disposal.

Application & Dosage For detailed instructions on the cleaning of central heating systems using DS40 System Cleaner, please refer to the instruction leaflet inside the box. The product can be poured as a free-flowing powder directly into a powerflushing unit. Alternatively, by pre-dissolving in warm water, the product can be applied via the F&E tank or, in a sealed system, via a Fernox Injector into a radiator.

One box (1.9 kg) is usually sufficient to clean a typical domestic central heating system. For large systems and heavily scaled or sludged systems, additional powder may need to be added. During the early part of the clean, a colour change (red-yellow) indicates that the product is exhausted and more powder needs to be added.

Once the clean has been completed, add the sachets of System Neutraliser until the solution turns yellow. If the water is still red, more Neutraliser will need to be added. If the two sachets are inadequate, additional System Neutraliser can be purchased from Fernox stockists. The system must be drained down and flushed several times with fresh water until the water running to drain is clear.

After the final drain, it is recommended that the system is protected using Fernox Protector F1.

Product Uses The Fernox Electrolytic Scale Reducer is not a water softener but it induces coagulation whilst the water hardness remains unchanged.

It works in the same way as a small battery where the brass body (cathode) and internal zinc (anode) are connected via mains water (electrolyte) to alter the structure of the hardness salts. The effect is to enable the hardness salts to cluster together rather than attach to the heat exchanger and pipe work in a central heating system. Limescale deposits are more common where heat is generated and can have lasting damaging effects on the efficiency and life of the boiler. The Fernox Electrolytic Scale Reducer also benefits a range of other domestic appliances including kettles, taps, showers and boilers. Any scale that does form will be less tenacious and easier to remove.

Part L Building Regulations (England and Wales) Part L of the Building Regulations (England and Wales) states that in hard water areas which exceed 200ppm, provision should be made to treat feed water to water heaters and hot water circuits of combination boilers to reduce the rate of limescale formation as well as limiting its harmful effects on energy efficiency. One way to comply with this legislation is to install a Fernox Electrolytic Scale Reducer. Best practice also encourages the use of Scale Reducers.

Application The Fernox Electrolytic Scale Reducer is connected directly into the pipe work using either compression or push fit fittings. In an average domestic usage household the Fernox Electrolytic Scale Reducer will provide whole house protection between two and ten years dependent on water usage levels. The unit is effective immediately and is guaranteed for 12 months against manufacturing defects. The unit is pressure-rated to 10 bar at 20˚C with an operating temperature range of 2˚C to 40˚C (cold feed). Install in compliance with WRAS installation requirements IRN R001, R120, R150, R170, R290 and/or local water regulations.

Product Uses Using Fernox Central Heating Energy Saver F6 can result in a gas consumption saving of 0.8% or £12.13 on unscaled boilers and 1.2% or £18.20 on scaled boilers. Fernox Energy Saver F6 is supplied in 500ml bottles and is compatible with all other Fernox products.

Fernox Energy Saver F6 has been independently tested by 2 organisations.

Application and Dosage One bottle will treat a 100 litre system (up to 10 single radiators). For open vented systems, add the product via the header tank. For sealed systems, add via a filling loop or the radiator using a Fernox Injector.

Carbon Footprinting We have worked with the Carbon Trust to measure the carbon emissions of Fernox Protector F1 500ml. We have undergone rigorous carbon analysis to enable Protector F1 to carry the Carbon Reduction Label. The following communication statement has been approved by the Carbon Trust;

If you protect a central heating system using Fernox Protector F1, after cleaning with Fernox Cleaner F3, you can restore and maintain system efficiency resulting in a gas saving of up to 15% every time you heat your room. This saving is equivalent to 110 Kg CO2e per typical home per year.’

As with all Fernox inhibitors, Protector F1 Express provides long term protection of domestic central heating systems against internal corrosion and limescale formation. It prevents corrosion of all metals found in these systems i.e. ferrous metals, copper and copper alloys and aluminium. It is suitable for all types of boiler, radiator and pipe work systems. Fernox Protector F1 Express is compatible with all metals and materials commonly used in central heating systems.

Application and Dosage One 265ml can will protect an average sized system (100 litres or up to ten single radiators) and is added via a radiator or filling loop. Fernox Protector F1 Express can be dispensed directly into a radiator air vent or system filling loop using the appropriate special adapter supplied with the product. The whole process takes less than two minutes.

Drain and flush thoroughly, at least twice, until the water runs clear. When using Cleaner F3 with a powerflushing machine, cleaning should be completed within an hour. Use dynamic flushing with plain water until the water is clear.

Refill the system adding Fernox Protector F1 for long term protection against corrosion and limescale.

Product Description Fernox Powerflushing Cleaner F5 is a quick and effective pH neutral cleaner for central heating systems. It is designed to be used in conjunction with Fernox Powerflow MKIII powerflushing unit (but is compatible with all known makes of powerflusing machines) to remove debris, sludge and scale from existing systems of all ages.

In this way, it will restore heating efficiency and eliminate or reduce boiler noise in heavily contaminated systems.

If the system is heavily scaled the use of Fernox DS40 System Cleaner is recommended. Fernox Powerflushing Cleaner F5 is a pH neutral, non-hazardous product that is well inhibited and compatible with all metals and materials commonly used in heating systems.

For continued long term protection the system should be thoroughly cleaned and flushed in accordance with UK legislation BS7593:1992 and Benchmark using Fernox Powerflushing Cleaner F5, before treating with Fernox Protector F1. We recommend Protector levels are checked regularly (annually).

Use dynamic flushing with plain water until the water is clear, testing with the TDS meter as above to ensure thorough flushing.

Refill the system adding a suitable Fernox Protector F1 for long term protection against corrosion and limescale.

In single feed indirect cylinders, e.g. "Primatic" or similar, potable water chemicals must be used.

First drain and refill the entire system with plain water. For optimum results the entire system, including drop feed radiators, where fitted, should be completely drainable. Preferably full bore gate valves with hose connectors should be provided temporarily for this purpose. Motorised and thermostatically controlled valves must be set so that no part of the system is closed off during cleaning or rinsing. Discharges must be made to the foul drain and not the surface water drain.

For open vented systems add Fernox Powerflushing Cleaner F5 via the header tank. For sealed systems add via a radiator using a Fernox Injector When cleaning existing systems, sludge and debris should be dispersed for at least one hour at normal operating temperatures. However, to remove hardened iron oxides and limescale, the cleaning time can be extended to up to one week under the normal heating cycle. If a radiator still has a cold spot after one hour, increase the flow through the radiator by closing the valves on the other radiators. An additional or repeat dose of Powerflushing Cleaner F5 may be necessary in some cases.

Drain and flush the system thoroughly to remove the cleaning chemical and debris. At least three complete changes of water are likely to be required. This is a crucial part of the cleaning process and must be carried out correctly. Use a rinse test meter such as the Fernox TDS meter to ensure that the Total Dissolved Solids have been satisfactorily removed. The system can be regarded as being thoroughly flushed when the system water value is within 10% of the mains water value. Differences over 10% mean that significant cleaner residues have been left in the system and further flushing is required. If not removed, cleaner residues will promote corrosion and negate the cleaning process.

Importantly, it also provides the long-term protection of domestic central heating systems against internal corrosion and limescale formation.

This innovative product inhibits corrosion against the chemical reaction of water in contact with metals found in heating systems, i.e. ferrous metals, copper and copper alloys and aluminium. Filter Fluid+ Protector is suitable for all types of boilers, radiators, underfloor and heating systems. When used in combination with a system filter like a TF1 filter, the Filter Fluid+ Protector offers an additional ongoing cleaning method to remove corrosion products from system water. It is ideal for servicing and annual maintenance checks, saving time on-site for installers.

Application and Dosage The recommended â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;in useâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; concentration of the product is 0.5%. One 500ml bottle will treat an average 100 litre system (up to 10 single radiators). Product can be dosed into the system via the Fernox TF1 filling point, the system filling loop or the radiator using a Fernox Injector and circulate. Fernox Filter Fluid+ Protector liberates system contaminants and delivers them to an in-line filter for removal. Once all the work is complete on the heating system, the final action that we recommend is carried out, is to isolate the filter & empty collected contaminants. Fernox Filter Fluid+ Protector should remain in the system. It is not for use in microbore systems.

For heavily sludged systems or new installations, Fernox recommends cleaning and flushing using Fernox Cleaner F3/F5 before treating with Filter Fluid+ Protector/ Protector F1 and installing a filter. The installation of a system or new boiler should comply with all local legislation such as Part L of the Building Regulations For continued protection, it is recommend Fernox Protector levels are checked annually as part of any filter maintenance programme.

Filter Fluid+ Protector Express is suitable for all types of boilers, radiators, underfloor and heating systems. When used in combination with a system filter like a TF1 filter, the Filter Fluid+ Protector Express offers an additional ongoing cleaning method to remove corrosion products from system water. It is ideal for servicing and annual maintenance checks, saving time on-site for installers.

Filter Fluid+ Protector Express is particularly suitable for heating systems which are difficult or problematic to clean by conventional flushing or to drain down the system and isolate the radiators; and where insufficient or no water treatment has been used previously on commissioning of the system or installation of the boiler.

Fernox Filter Fluid+ Protector Express is compatible with metals and materials commonly used in central heating systems and all Fernox products.

Application and Dosage One 400 mL can will protect an average sized system (100 litres or up to ten single radiators) and is added via a radiator, TF1 Filter or system filling loop. Fernox Filter Fluid+ Protector Express can be dispensed directly into a radiator air vent, system filling loop or via a TF1 Filter using the appropriate adapter supplied with the product. The whole process takes less than two minutes and 30 seconds to dose.

Once all the work is complete on the heating system, the final action that we recommend is carried out, is to isolate the filter and empty collected contaminants. Fernox Filter Fluid+ Protector Express should remain in the system. It is not for use in microbore systems. In single feed indirect cylinder, e.g. 'Primatic' or similar, potable water chemicals must be used.

For heavily sludged systems or new installations, Fernox recommends cleaning and flushing using Fernox Cleaner F3/F5 before treating with Protector F1 or Filter Fluid+ Protector with an in-line filter. The installation of a system or new boiler should comply with all local legislation such as Part L of the Building Regulations.

FLUXITE     

It is designed for engineering and sheet metal work, and is equally as effective on the soldering of brass and copper plumbing systems. The flux is active and contains zinc chloride.

Instructions for use Cleanliness is most important for good results. Before starting to solder remove all traces of oil, grease, dirt or rust from the area or parts to be soldered. Similarly when soldering copper pipes any grease or swarf is to be removed, and the use of wire wool for this purpose is the most commonly used method.

Emery paper is a good alternative cleaner.

When soldering with an iron, this needs to be cleaned prior to use, before heating. A thin application of Fluxite is then applied so that the iron can be tinned with solder. Fluxite is also applied to the area to be soldered, which is then heated with a soldering iron or flame soldered. Wipe the area with a clean damp rag to remove any excess flux or residues.

The use of Fluxite to solder copper piping need only be applied to the outside of the pipe surface where the joint is to be made. Only a thin layer of flux is required. With the assembly of the copper pipe into the fitting sufficient flux is transferred into the walls of the fitting and no excess flux is trapped inside the joint area. Heat is then applied to the joint area, until a sufficient temperature is reached for soldering, which will complete the capillary action to secure the joint.

Soldering The well known active paste flux is suitable for many metals, excluding aluminium and stainless steels, and is effectively used with both end feed and integral ring solder fittings. Fernox 99C lead free wire and Fernox Powerflow wire are recommended for use with Fluxite. To minimise the risk of any corrosion difficulties it is important and highly recommended that after the soldering operation, all fluxes be removed. A damp cloth can be used to remove surface residues. For systems where copper tubes and fittings are installed flushing with Powerflushing Cleaner F5 or Superconcentrate Cleaner F3 is recommended.

Gas or Water This all purpose paste flux has been used successfully in gas systems for many years where professional application is essential. Fluxite is WRAS approved for use in both hot and cold water systems.

Product Uses HVAC Cleaner F3 is a multi-purpose cleaner for pre-commission cleaning new installations and removing sludge from existing systems.

The mild formulation dissolves scale and mobilises sludge making it easy to remove by flushing.

HVAC Cleaner F3 is particularly suitable for cleaning older installations without exposing leaks. HVAC Cleaner F3 is excellent for passivating metal surfaces prior to adding a Fernox HVAC Protector F1.

HVAC Cleaner F3 is well inhibited and compatible with all metals and materials commonly used in heating and cooling systems.

Application and Dosage For optimum results, the entire system should be completely drainable.

HVAC Cleaner F3 should be dosed at a concentration of 0.5%. Add via the feed and expansion tank or inject directly into the system via a suitable point (e.g. dosing pot).

For pre-commission cleaning, circulate HVAC Cleaner F3 for at least one hour at normal operating temperature. To remove sludge from existing systems, circulate under normal operating conditions, for up to 7 days until acceptable flow around the system has been achieved. Additional/repeat applications of HVAC Cleaner F3 may be necessary if systems are heavily sludged. Drain and flush with cold water until the water is clear and the HVAC Cleaner F3 has been rinsed from the system. HVAC Cleaner F3 will usually be removed after 3 complete flushes.

Finally add the appropriate Fernox inhibitor such as HVAC Protector F1 to prevent further corrosion damage and scale deposits.

Product Uses LP Sterox is a stabilised aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide containing colloidal silver and other stabilising materials. As a water treatment biocide, LP Sterox is unique in providing a very wide spectrum of biocidal activity. It will effectively treat all water borne bacteria and viruses. LP Sterox is particularly valuable in modern water system hygiene management where more conventional treatments are unsuitable and, as such, is ideal for disinfecting stored water systems in domestic properties, small nursing homes, sheltered housing and small commercial properties.

Application and Dosage One bottle will disinfect a 300 litre system during normal use, or 400 litres if the system is not used for 24 hours after application. It is not recommended to exceed this dosage rate.

For drinking water systems, provided LP Sterox is dosed at the recommended level, the treated water is safe enough to drink. Once disinfection is complete, there is no need to flush out or neutralise the system.

Test strips are available for monitoring hydrogen peroxide as follows: •

At the recommended dosage rate, 0.5 litre contains in-use 50ppm hydrogen peroxide (0.15% LP Sterox in solution)

Application and Dosage When sealing leaks, relieve the water pressure before application if possible. Whilst LS-X is setting, drain system if necessary. Apply LS-X direct form the tube and mould into shape using a spatula or knife previously dipped into soapy water to prevent adhesion or dragging. Replace cap immediately after use.

Allow a minimum of 1 hour to set. Time required depends on thickness applied. Spraying with water speeds curing.

LS-X may be used as a jointing compound on hot and cold water services, including potable water, in place of traditional materials. Reinforcement is generally not required, but reinforcement fibre may be used on larger pipe sizes.

The use of reinforcement material is advisable for larger leaks and higher pressures.

In areas where irritating hard scale deposits form in the shower head or on the kettle element, Magnetic Scale Reducers work as a water conditioner. Any scale that does form will be less tenacious and easier to remove.

Part L Building Regulations (England and Wales) Part L of the Building Regulations (England and Wales) states that in hard water areas which exceed 200ppm, provision should be made to treat feed water to water heaters and hot water circuits of combination boilers to reduce the rate of limescale formation as well as limiting its harmful effects on energy efficiency. One way to comply with the legislation is to install a Fernox Magnetic Scale Reducer.

Application The Fernox Magnetic Scale Reducer is connected directly into pipework and using either compression or push fit fittings. Product Uses Fernox MaxMag is designed to help clear radiator blockages to restore the efficiency of the radiator to heat up the room faster, using less energy.

MaxMag can be adjusted for right or left handed use by rotating the roller on the handle through 180 degrees.

For optimum results, ensure the arrows on the tool’s roller point towards the radiator so contact between Maxmag’s magnet and the radiator surface is maximised, simply adjust the angle of the roller to suit.

During cleaning and powerflushing, MaxMag is rolled over the surface of a radiator, starting at the bottom and moving in an upward direction, to pull any magnetic iron oxide sludge away from the bottom edge of the panel to enable easy flushing.

Starting from the return end of the radiator, roll the MaxMag over bottom water way and vertical channels systematically. Work up and along the panel to cover the entire radiator.

Repeat the process at least three times on all areas of the radiator. If flow issues persist, continue rolling until the obstruction is removed.

During powerflushing, reverse the flow direction of the powerflushing machine between each radiator’s full rolling cycle using MaxMag Repeat the process for all radiators in the system.

The diagram below shows the areas most susceptible to sludging and where the use of MaxMag will be most beneficial.

Product Uses Fernox Protector MB-1 gives long term protection of domestic central heating systems against internal corrosion and limescale formation. It prevents corrosion of all metals found in these systems, i.e. ferrous metals, copper and copper alloys and aluminium. It is suitable for all types of boiler, radiator and pipework systems. Fernox Protector MB-1 is compatible with all metals and materials commonly used in central heating systems.

For continued long-term protection we recommend Protector levels are checked regularly (annually). The concentration of the product can be easily measured on site using a Fernox Protector Test Kit or through the use of the Fernox System Health check postal service.

Application and Dosage The recommended ‘in-use’ concentration of the product is 4%. One pack (4 litres) will protect an average sized system (up to ten radiators). For open vented systems add via the feed and expansion tank. For sealed systems add via the radiator or filling loop using a Fernox Injector.

In single feed indirect cylinders, e.g. "Primatic" or similar, potable water chemicals must be used.

We recommend untreated or sludged systems are thoroughly cleaned and flushed in accordance with BS7593 and Benchmark using Fernox Cleaner F3, before treating with Fernox Protector MB-1, as existing debris can damage the installation.

Product Uses Powerflow is a white ‘soft’ paste which is easily applied to joint areas prior to soldering. It is designed specifically for the soldering of copper plumbing systems and is suitable for use with a range of metals/alloys. It contains no zinc chloride.

Application and Dosage Clean the pipe to remove metal swarf/grease. Apply the flux carefully to the outside of the pipe surface in the area in which the joint is to be made. Only a very thin layer of flux is required. We do not recommend applying this to the inside of the fitting because any excess flux will be pushed into the tube when pushing the two halves of the joint together. Do not use too much flux. When soldering Powerflow Flux can be used effectively with both end feed and integral ring solder fittings. It is also appropriate for lead containing or lead free solders.

Fry Powerflow wire or Fry Grade 99C wire are recommended.

To minimise the likelihood of corrosion difficulties it is recommended that the system be flushed out with water as soon as possible after completion. This can be aided by the use of a proprietary cleaner such as Fernox Cleaner F3.

Gas or Water Powerflow Flux is WRAS approved. It passed tests for use in both hot and cold water systems and is listed in the UK Water Fittings and Materials Directory.

Powerflow Flux has been successfully used in gas systems for many years. However there are people who prefer not to use a self-cleaning flux in a gas pipe system. If this is a concern, then Fry Fluxite Paste flux is recommended.

Instructions for use 1. Isolate the electricity supply, close the isolating valves on the system pump and remove the pump head. Put the pump head to one side.

2. Insert the small flat 40mm x 5mm gasket over the central suction port on the PPHA. This gasket fits all makes of pump.

3. Select the outer large diameter O-ring that best fits the pump – this will vary depending on the make of pump.

Refer to the fitting guide.

4. Using the original fixing screws supplied with the pump, fit the PHA in place of the pump head. (If replacement screws are required most pumps use either M5 or M6 size). The PPHA will seal without over tightening using the correct O-ring.

5. Connect your power flushing pump to the PPHA. Use only PLASTIC (PP) ¾” female nut liner and seals, as provided with the Fernox Powerflow pump and PPHA. Secure these to the hoses with screw clamps. The use of metal connectors will damage the thread on the PPHA fittings and reduce its service life. Note that the kidney shaped port on the PPHA is the flow to the system and is marked ‘F’; whilst the central port with the sprung sliding bush is the system return and marked ‘R’.

Care and maintenance The Fernox Powerflow Pump Head Adapter is made from rugged, acid resistant polypropylene and stainless steel and requires only minimal maintenance.

The sliding bush should be cleaned and lubricated with silicone oil or silicone grease as required. Check before use that the bush will spring in and out. O-rings may wear or be lost and may require periodic replacement. A replacement O-ring pack is available.

4. Using an existing hose provided with Fernox Powerflow MKIII, connect the male camlock on the filter to the heating system/boiler. Connect the return to the Powerflow MKIII using the second existing hose provided with the Fernox Powerflow MKIII. Note: If the current British Gas powerflushing machine is used the camlock adapters are not required.

Operating Instructions 1. Ensuring that the reverse flow lever on the Powerflow MKIII is set in the “Flow” direction.

2. Ensure both three-port valves on the filter are in the CIRCULATE position.

3. Turn on the Powerflow MKIII flushing machine and immediately check all connections, including the top of the Fernox Powerflushing Filter cylinder for leaks.

4. After initial circulation for approximately 10 minutes, turn both three-port valves 180° into the BYPASS position.

5. Unscrew the securing ring from the top of the cylinder and carefully lift out the magnet.

Note: the magnet is very powerful and is strongly attracted to steel surfaces. Take care not to trap fingers and avoid contact with equipment sensitive to magnetic fields.

6. Inspect the magnet for collected deposits and, if necessary, clean as follows: 7. Hold the cylinder lid handle tightly with one hand. Whilst wearing disposable gloves, slide the magnetite sludge down the shaft of the magnet into a suitable container. Note: Depending on the amount of sludge collected it is advisable to remove only a proportion of the deposits with each stroke, starting at the lower end. Clean the end of the magnet.

8. Ensure safe and responsible disposal of sludge.

9. Re-assemble the Fernox Powerflushing Filter ensuring that the magnet is located within the circular recess at the base of the cylinder, and turn both three-port valves back into the CIRCULATE position.

10. Repeat the inspection and cleaning procedure as required during the flushing process.

Cleaning the Magnet It is not necessary to remove all deposits during the intermediate cleans whilst powerflushing. However, to ensure a long life the magnet should be thoroughly cleaned and dried after each usage.

The Fernox Protector Test Kit is designed to give rapid on-site analysis of the concentration of Fernox Protectors in central heating systems.

The optimum figure quoted in the instructions is when the system is dosed at the recommended strength.

However, higher values are not detrimental and are preferable to under-dosing.

General Instructions The test kit is supplied with all the equipment and reagents required in determining the Protector levels of at least 25 systems. In order to obtain accurate results all equipment should be thoroughly rinsed with tap water after use. Prior to testing, rinse the sample tube with a portion of the water to be tested, then fill the test vial to the 10 ml mark. The test method is very simple to use and does not require any formal training.

Application and Dosage Fernox thread seal tape is resistant to attack by all acids, alkalis, solvents and chemicals over a wide operating temperature range of -20°C to +200°C. It can be successfully used with hot and cold water (including potable water) and compressed air.

Drying time is eliminated and joints are easily dismantled and cleaned for re-assembly.

Working pressures contained will depend on quality and size of threads, service temperature and number of wraps. Fernox thread seal tape complies with BS EN751-3.

REFRACTOMETER   

Refractive Index The refractive Index of a material is an optical measurement of its ability to bend a beam of light entering it.

The refractive index may be used to determine the concentration of a material when dissolved in water due to the difference in refractive index between water and the material being monitored. All glycol-based antifreezes will refract light and this property can be used to determine the concentration of treatment present.

How to use The Refractometer has an adjustable eyepiece. If the user normally wears spectacles, it may be that the o scale is sharper without them. The scale is calibrated for use at 202 C with the graphs provided. If used in temperatures outside of this range, it is advisable to recalibrate - please refer to steps 1 to 3 of the instruction leaflet supplied with product When determining the concentration of antifreeze in a water system, it is advisable to take the average of two or three readings if time permits.

Test Procedure 1. Take a small sample of test solution into a clean container. Ensure that the sample does not contain grit that could scratch the prism. o

2. Allow samples to cool to room temperature (202 C) before testing. Very hot solutions could crack the glass prism and will also give inaccurate results.

3. Open the illuminator plate situated at the end of the instrument furthest away from the eyepiece and place a drop or two of test sample on the prism. Use only plastic applicator rods as the prism glass is relatively soft and can be easily scratched.

4. Close the illuminator plate and direct the instrument towards a convenient light source. Looking through the eyepiece a circular field will be seen with a vertical scale down the centre. When an optically active material is present in the sample, the field will also be split horizontally into dark and light areas. The position at which the demarcation between light and dark crosses the vertical scale is the point from which the reading should be taken.

5. Select an appropriate graph for the type of antifreeze being tested, i.e., Fernox Alphi-11. Compare the % BRIX reading with the graph and read off the concentration of antifreeze and compare with the guideline concentrations.

Please ensure that the dispenser is fully submerged, but not in contact with the bottom or sides of the tank, and does not impede the correct operation of the ball-valve arm. For continued protection against scale build-up the dispenser should be replaced every six months. For combination tanks (when the cold water tank is very close to or on top of the hot water cylinder) the dispenser should be checked and replaced every three to six months.

Product Uses Fernox Sterox is used to disinfect domestic water systems to ACOP L8 and other specifications. Hot and cold storage systems should be cleaned and chlorinated at least annually. It is also advisable to commission a chlorination when; routine inspection shows it to be necessary, the system is being brought into use for the first time, part of it has been out of use and is being re-commissioned, it has been altered, repaired or otherwise disturbed or following and outbreak or suspected outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease.

Physical Properties Fernox Sterox comprises 15 tablets of Sodium Dichlorolsocyanurate (each containing 12.5gms of available chlorine), a test kit and full instructions for use. One kit chlorinates 375 gallons (1687.5 L) of water.

Advise the occupant of the building that the water in the system should not be used or consumed during the chlorination process. Advise them of any health and safety precautions as appropriate, Warn building occupants that water is heavily chlorinated and unusable during chlorination process.

Ensure the system can easily be completely drained. Where necessary, fit extra drain points to the bottom of the hot water storage or other tanks. Pipework needs to be self-draining and selfventilating to aid the filling and draining. Make sure any dead-legs (as opposed to low points in pipework) are fully drainable. The Fernox Injector may be used to introduce pre-dissolved Sterox tablets into pipework fitted with a ½” tee, isolating valve and terminating in an air bleed nipple.

Fit gate valves to the feeds from the cold water storage tank (CWST) if none are already fitted.

Switch off the boiler.

Shut off the mains supply to the cold water storage tank.

Completely drain the hot and cold system including the hot water cylinder, lavatory cisterns, etc.

Thoroughly clean the cold water storage tank, taking care to remove all the debris.

Shut off the feeds to the system from the cold water storage tank.

Fill the cold water storage tank.

Add two Sterox tablets for every 225 litres (50 gallons) of water in the tank. This should provide more than the required 50 mg/L of free chlorine, but allows for chlorine usage while filling the system. Allow a minute or so for the tablet to break-up then stir until dissolved. Alternatively predissolve the tablets in a clean bucket of water, add to the cold water storage tank and stir.

Again, turn off the mains supply to the cold water storage tank. a) Open the gate valves on the feeds and release the chlorinated water into the system by running every tap (and shower) and drain cocks on dead legs, starting with the ones nearest the cold water storage tank. b) Do not allow the cold water storage tank to empty during the filling. (This clearly should not happen if it is large enough). If it looks like emptying then close the gate valves in time to allow the cold water storage tank to refill. Re-chlorinate the filled tank and re-start the filling process. c) All the water in the system should now contain at least 50 mg/L free chlorine. Check this at one or two outlets (including the furthest from the cold water storage tank), using the test tablets (see below).

When the systems are full, top up the storage tank to above the normal level in the tank by holding down the ball valve and add a further tablet (step 9 above). Check the free chlorine level in the tank is at least 50 mg/L. At this stage all cistern lids and storage tanks must be in their fixed position and remain so from this point onwards.

Leave the system for one hour when the chlorine level should still be in excess of 50 mg/L. Check as in step 10 (c) above using the test tablets. If it is not, the system should be re-chlorinated as the level of contamination is likely to have been high.

The chlorinated water now has to be flushed out. This is best done by completely draining the system and tank and refilling with fresh water at least twice.

Use the test tablets at selected outlets to ensure that the chlorine level is no greater than that of the incoming mains water. A small trace of free chlorine is not harmful, but may give an unpleasant taste to the water.

Keep accurate records of the date of chlorination, initial and final chlorine concentrations and contact time. Include company and personnel responsible for chlorination and date of next chlorination. (Use the same information for issuing Chlorination Certificates).

Fernox Sterox is classified as harmful and dangerous for the environment. Harmful if swallowed. Irritating to eyes and respiratory system, contact with acids liberates toxic gas. Product Uses The Fernox Postal Sampling Service provides an invaluable facility for those who want to ascertain the cause of central heating problems and to determine the necessary remedial action required to resolve them, particularly where on-site results are inconclusive. Analytical water testing works because the water in the system contains all the information required for diagnosis of the most common problems.

The Fernox laboratory will carry out a full analysis of the system water as part of the Postal Sampling Service, establishing the root of the problem and prescribing the correct Fernox treatment.

Following treatment with Fernox products, the Postal Sampling Service will provide confirmation that the system has been correctly treated. This service is not available if competitor products have been used.

Application Fernox provide two levels of analysis for domestic central heating systems, depending upon the nature of the enquiry and severity of the problem; the Premium Service and the System Health Check.

Premium Service The Premium Service is a comprehensive analysis of both mains and system water and is designed for domestic and commercial properties where a specific problem requires detailed analysis. Premium Service includes analysis of up to 20 water parameters including; determination of levels of corrosion products and scale deposition in the system, pH, the presence of faults such as aeration and flux residue contamination, plus treatment monitoring. A full analytical report containing the results, likely causes of any problems specified as affecting the system, and recommendations for use of Fernox products as appropriate, will be sent to the customer within seven days.

System Health Check The system health check is a simple and cost effective solution to ensure the correct level of inhibitor is present in a system and to check whether a system has been correctly flushed after a chemical clean. This service is only available if Fernox Cleaners F3 and Protectors F1 have been used. Fernox are unable to comment on correct cleaning and dosing of competitor products.

Packaging Fernox’s Water Sampling Kit provides all the necessary apparatus required to gather samples for testing.

The micro-bottle kit consists of two sample bottles, a water analysis order form and a Freepost envelope.

The process is simple. Simply fill one sample bottle with system water and the other with mains water (i.e. kitchen tap), complete the enclosed order form and return the samples and questionnaire in the Freepost envelope. The results will be returned directly to the customer.

Application & Dosage For detailed instructions on carrying out cleaning of central heating systems using DS-40 System Cleaner and Neutraliser, please refer to the instruction leaflet inside the box. The system water (after allowing any debris to settle) should be yellow in colour. If the water is still red, more neutraliser will need to be added. The system must be drained down and flushed several times with fresh water until the water running to drain is clear. After the final drain, it is recommended that the system be protected using a suitable Fernox Protector.

In single feed indirect cylinders, e.g. ‘Primatic’ or similar, potable water chemicals must be used.

Product The microprocessor TDS meter offers a rapid and accurate field test for determining the concentration of total dissolved solids in system and mains waters. The prime use for the TDS is to determine whether a system has been correctly flushed after a chemical clean. This is done by comparing the readings between mains water and system water samples.

Provided that a system is known to be treated with an inhibitor which gives high enough conductivity readings, it is possible to determine the concentration of inhibitor in a system. However, modern inhibitor formulations, such as Protector F1, are mainly organic and contain few inorganic salts, thus giving a conductivity not much higher than mains water. For measuring the concentration of these inhibitors, therefore, it is recommended that the Protector Test Kit is used.

Turn the test meter on with the ON/OFF button.

Remove the protection can and pull out the electrode. Adjust the length of the electrode as needed.

Rinse the electrode with clean water and wipe it dry. Immerse the electrode in the calibration solution 0.01N KCI. Stir gently and wait until the display stabilises.

Adjust the reading to 141 (1410μs/cm) for conductivity or 94 (940 ppm) for TDS at 25°C by tuning the trimmer located at the right side of the meter with a screwdriver Rinse the electrode with clean water and wipe it dry. Dip the electrode into the sample solution to be measured. Stir gently and wait until a stable readying can be obtained.

Read the measure on the display. The reading should be multiplied by a factor of 10 for conductivity or TDS. After measurement, rinse the electrode with clean water and replace the protection cap.

Application with Chemical Cleaning For checking whether a system is flushed after a chemical clean, carry out steps 1 to 5 with both system water and mains water and compare the results. The system can be regarded as being thoroughly flushed if the readings are within 10% of each other. Differences above 20% mean that significant cleaner residues have been left in the system.

Maintenance The TDS is virtually maintenance free. Change a new battery when the power fails to turn on or the display fades. Calibration is not necessary when taking comparative readings but may be required for accurate concentration checks. Application The Fernox TF1 Compact Filter can be connected directly onto pipework using the valve fittings provided. The unit can be installed in either horizontal or vertical pipework and has been conveniently designed to be positioned flush to a wall. The TF1 Compact Filter can be installed in any one of 24 separate orientations enabled by its unique inlet/outlet mechanism, to allow the flow to be in any direction as it passes through the unit.

Product uses The Fernox TF1 Compact Filter (UK patent granted No. 2448232) is a high performance in-line filter, which allows hydrocyclonic action to deliver contaminants to the unit’s specially designed magnet assembly, removing and containing them from the system water. The Fernox TF1 Compact Filter has been developed to fit into domestic heating systems where installation access may be restricted. In situations where headroom is limited, the TF1 Compact Filter can be installed at an angle of 45 degrees without compromising performance, to allow magnet removal when cleaning the unit.

TF1 DELTA FILTER Cleaning Guide 1

The TF1 Delta Filter is designed to be cleaned in situ within the system.

There is no requirement to remove any bolts, seals or the filter itself from the pipework.

Stop System Pump.

Close system ďŹ&#x201A;ow valves to isolate filter.

Remove the magnet.

Open outlet valve 45°, open drain valve to allow the contents to empty.

Close drain valve, close outlet valve.

Remove hose barb connector and replace drain valve cap.

Replace magnet.

N.B. Ensure proper care of the magnet is observed at all times.

Pressure Loss Data The TF1 Delta Filter has been hydrostatically tested according to the Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC at 24 bars (348 psi) for a PN16 rating.

N.B. To prevent further corrosion from taking place a quality inhibitor should be used in combination with the TF1 Delta Filter, especially in circumstances where demineralised water is present.

Caution: High Powered Magnet and Surface Temperature As with all magnetic products, if you have an implanted cardiac device extra caution should be taken. In addition, wear hand Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when handling a TF1 Delta Filter during operation or cleaning.

Product Usage The TF1 Delta Filter is a high performance filter, which uses magnetic and hydrocyclonic action to deliver, contain and remove contaminants from system water. Ideal for all systems such as zoned, cascade, low loss header and plate-to-plate heat exchangers.

A TF1 Delta Filter will protect the boiler from the damaging effects of circulating corrosion debris, which has collected in the system as a result of a chemical reaction when water comes into contact with mixed metals used within a heating and cooling system.

Product Use The TF1 Demo jar is a point of sale device that demonstrates the key filtration principle of the Fernox TF1 magnetic filtration range. The device contains a water-based liquid with added frost protection and a blend of magnetite (iron (II,III) oxide) grades to simulate the water condition that may be found in a typical dirty central heating system. When the device is shaken with the magnet removed, an idea of dirty water that can be found in a central heating system can be seen. When the magnet is placed into the device, the principle of magnetic filtration is clearly demonstrated.

Handling and Storage The device is supplied with a factory-fitted non-removable lid. Contact with the materials inside the device should not normally occur. The liquid and magnetite blend used in the TF1 Demo Jar is classified as nonhazardous and non-irritant, but as with all chemicals keep out of reach of children. Do not take internally.

May cause an allergic reaction. Contains 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one. In case of contact with eyes or skin, rinse immediately with plenty of water. The device contains a neodymium magnet. Care should be taken when handling this magnet.

Product Uses The Fernox TF1 Flushing Adapter is designed for easy connection of your Fernox Powerflow Flushing Machine to the heating system via a Fernox TF1 Total Filter. The Fernox TF1 Flushing Adapter fits on the same fixings and valves as either a 22 mm or 28 mm Fernox TF1 Total Filter.

Instructions for use 1. Close the isolating valves on the Fernox Total Filter TF1 and remove from system leaving the valves in situ.

2. Using either the original rubber seals or replacements provided with the Fernox TF1 Flushing Adapter, fit in place of the filter as show in the photograph.

3. Connect your Powerflow Flushing Machine to the Fernox TF1 Flushing Adapter. Use only PLASTIC (PP) ¾" female nut liner and seals, as provided with the Fernox Powerflow Flushing Machine and Fernox TF1 Flushing Adapter. Secure these to the hoses with screw clamps.

Care and Maintenance Used appropriately the Fernox TF1 Flushing Adapter is maintenance free. The unit is factory sealed and should not be disassembled. Spares parts for the Fernox TF1 Flushing Adapter are available from our sales office by calling 0330 100 7750.

Inhibitor usage guidelines A TF1 Omega Filter will protect the boiler from the damaging effects of circulating corrosion debris, which has collected in the system as a result of a chemical reaction when water comes into contact with mixed metals used within a heating and cooling system. Note: to prevent further corrosion from taking place a quality inhibitor should be used in combination with the TF1 Omega Filter. In circumstances where demineralised or softened water is present a quality inhibitor must be used.

Cleaning Guide

2. Close the inlet/ outlet valves.

Remove the drain valve cap.

1. Switch off the boiler.

5. Close the inlet valve.

Close the drain valve.

3. Open the drain valve.

6. Replace the drain valve cap.

Reinsert the magnet.

4. Remove the magnet.

Slowly open the inlet valve to control the flow.

Flush out the filter until the water runs clear.

7. Open the inlet/ outlet valves.

8. Restart the boiler.

Ensure that the magnet sheath remains clean and dry.

TF1 OMEGA FILTER FLUSHING ADAPTER The Fernox TF1 Omega Filter Flushing Adapter quickly and easily connects a Fernox Powerflow Flushing Machine to the heating system via a Fernox TF1 Omega Filter.

It is fitted by simply replacing the filter body with the adapter.

Cleaning Guide

1. Close inlet and outlet valves

3. Open outlet and drain valves

4. Close drain valve, replace magnet and open inlet valve

3. Push the inlet/outlet port back towards the body of the unit to prevent further rotation.

4. Push the locking clip securely back into the ‘lock’ position.

Inlet/Outlet Orientation Guide

1. Using a flat end screwdriver in the recess shown, gently lever the locking clip into the ‘unlock’ position.

2. Pull the inlet/outlet port approximately 3 mm away from the body to allow rotation to the required position.

Application The Fernox TF1 Total Filter can be connected directly on to the pipework using the valve fittings provided. The Fernox TF1 Total Filter is supplied ready to install into vertical pipework with system water flowing upwards. Further installation instructions are provided with the unit.

The TF1 Total Filter can be installed in any one of 24 separate orientations enabled by its unique inlet/outlet mechanism, to allow the flow to be in any direction as it passes through the unit.

WATER HAWK   

Jointing compound for use with hot and cold potable water WRAS – Approved Product Non-toxic and environmentally friendly

Product Uses Fernox Water Hawk is a jointing compound designed especially for use with hot and cold potable water. It is a WRAS Approved Product. Fernox Water Test Kit The Fernox Water Test Kit is designed to give rapid on-site analysis of the major water parameters that can affect the life span of a central heating system.

This test kit is supplied with all equipment and reagents required to determine chloride, copper, iron, hardness, pH and Fernox Protector levels. All tests are suitable for use with water containing Fernox corrosion Protectors.

Easy to use colour charts are provided for the iron, copper, pH and hardness tests. Simple drop tests are used for measuring the levels of inhibitor and chloride.
