Feeding the City of 2050 ‘We are what we eat.’ As humans we have a basic need to consume food and water to exist. We are intrinsically linked with nature.

Due to social, economical and political systems that encourage industrial agricultural practices we have become increasingly distanced from the origin, production and processing of the food and drink that we consume.

‘The world is what we eat.’ Food production currently creates approximately 1/3 of global carbon emissions, leading to considerable environmental impact.

What can we do? As Architects / designers we have the skills to; -observe + analyse + reveal -speculate + communicate + instigate

eCO-LAB

collaborate in our laboratories

laboratory Noun a room or building equipped for scientific experiments, research, or teaching, or for the manufacture of drugs or chemicals.

co-working Nounw the use of an office or other working environment by people who are selfemployed or working for different employers, typically so as to share equipment, ideas, and knowledge. “the whole idea of co-working is to bring bright, creative people together and let the ideas collide

Laboratories evolution

The main evolution of laboratories trought history has been the media and the matter of studies

Laboratory as a kitchen

a place to create and discover

Laboratories taxonomy

Analysys of differet laboratory plans studiyng the different types of areas and uses proposed. The idea is to established a simple rule that help us to propose a logic programe based on this study.

Laboratories taxonomy

After the analysis we get to a simple conclusion: If we want to give our laboratories a proper functionality we must propose two types of space, SERVANT SPACES and SERVED SPACES. In wich the served spaces would be a modular diaphanous area open to possibles changes and the servant spaces that contain facilities, Following this “simple rule should guarantee a proper functionality.

INITIAL APPROACH

VOLUMETRY / MATERIALITY / VISUALS We developed a serial concept images to study how the building will affect the surrondings with his own materiality and volumetry. As well as the different spaces cretaed at the momentr of the interposition af a singular piece in a “white canvas as we consider the actual plot.

modular furniture We understand the learning spaces of the future as areas of full interaction between individuals, places in which you can be either doing a research about food for the future, experiencing a new virtual way of cooking or assisting to a master class, a flowing space, that with minimum variations, gives you totally different perceptible areas. Giving the interior of the building a chameleon perception that adapts to the required needs and evolves. In terms of viability, the project basis are three wood modules, totally open, semi open and closed of 60 x 60 x 90 cm sustained one to each other by cruciform aluminum extrusions, giving the option to remove one module without affecting the behavior of the structure. For the built of the different own mobile laboratories we thought about the EKET module (selled by IKEA) cost 20 euros the unit.
