gs in their infinite nothingness

I don't know what I'd do if I were to leave

Then what was all the walking for? - Fernanda Andrade

Yarelin Castillo

Deep breaths, it's a rough 5 minutes Touch thumb to every finger, it'll help you calm down Step out for a while, you just need a second Be late, you're mentally preparing yourself Oh, a missed class, it's fine there's always the next You can't get yourself out of bed, one day off won't hurt Still cant get up? Doesn't matter, no one will notice you weren't there anyway You're not really hungry let's skip breakfast Ever tried alcohol? First time for everything See, you feel better already How about something stronger? 7:30 am lets try again Time for bed ... if you can even get there Maybe you should relax a liitle before heading out, try this "Glad you joined us today" Yeah me too

Madge Gill was born in London in 1882 to a single mother. Her mother's shame in birthing a child out of wedlock would come to define Gill's childhood. At the age of nine, she was sent to an orphanage and 5 years later transported to Canada as part of a child labor program, where she would become a domestic servant and babysitter. She saved up money and made her way back to her homeland of London, where she stayed with an aunt. Years after arriving, she married her cousin and had three sons, one of whom died of influenza. At the age of thirty-seven, Gill birthed a stillborn baby and became extremely sick, subsequently losing her eye. While she had fallen ill, Gill took an interest in art. She began experimenting with knitting, weaving, writing, and drawing. At this time, and for the rest of her life, Gill claimed to be guided in her art by a spirit named Myrninerest. She claimed to be possessed by this spirit and during these episodes, Madge would produce copious amounts of drawings or create intricate pieces of art. Her son Laurie observed that Gill would go into a fugue state and become distressed. Worried for her mental health, Gills husband, Thomas, admitted her into the care of a Dr. Helen Boyle, who encouraged her to continue creating art.

It wasn’t until 1939 that Gill exhibited her art in public. She displayed a 40 meter wide piece at the Whitechapel Gallery. Although she would continue to display her work, Gill refused to sell the art she created. She wholeheartedly believed that the art belonged to her spirit guide Myrninerest, and it wouldn’t be right for her to sell art that didn’t belong to her.
During the 1930s and onwards, Gill was recongnized by those in close proximity to her as a local medium. She would host seances in her house and offered prophesies to those who were willing to hear her out. Her attentiveness to spirituality was apparent in her work, especially her intracate ink drawings. Most of her art featured faces of female figures; many art historians theorize that these faces could represent the spirit Myrninerest, Gills stillborn daughter, or Gill herself.

Following her husbands death, Gill took care of her sons and spent the last remaining years of her life in isolation. In 1961, Gill died and up to 2,000 art pieces were found stored in her home. Today, Gill’s art is shown around the world and she is recognized as an essential component of outsider art (art created by self-taught artists).
