A bone graft can create a more solid base for the implant. In some cases, you may need only minor bone grafting, which can be done at the same time as the implant surgery. Your oral surgeonwill then place the metal post of the dental implant into your jawbone. This healing period may last several months. Your dentist may place an abutment, or an extension of the metal post, after that healing period. In some cases, when the implant is very stable, this can be done at the same time that the implant is placed. After that, your soft tissue then needs to heal.

During this time, your dentist will make molds of your teeth and jawbone to place the final tooth or teeth later. The entire process can take many months from start to finish. Much of which is devoted to healing and waiting for the growth of new bone in your jaw. Time spent healing can be greatly impacted by whether or not a bone graft is needed. Although, much of the process is determined by jaw bone growth throughout the entirety of receiving your implants.

Whether you have dental implant surgery in one stage or multiple stages, you may experience some discomfort associated with any type of dental surgery. Typical discomfort includes swelling of the gums and face, bruising of your skin and gums, pain at the implant site, and minor bleeding. Your oral surgeon may prescribe pain medications or antibiotics. After each stage of surgery, you may need to eat soft foods while healing. Additionally, your surgeon may use stitches that dissolve on their own. If your stitches aren't self-dissolving, your dentist will needto remove them.
