‘Training Will Save Lives’
As emergency services attended an East London tower block fire early on Bank Holiday Monday, FDM Ltd’s Nicola John says adequate training is at the core of keeping the public safe.
Seven years on from the Grenfell tragedy, in which 72 people lost their lives, and less than 10 days before Phase 2 of its inquiry is published – more than 200 firefighters were tackling a blaze at a Dagenham tower block. News reports state that more than 80 people were evacuated, all occupants were accounted for, and there were no deaths. But, there have also been reports of known safety issues at the building, said to be wrapped in flammable cladding.
Nicola John has more than two decades in the fire safety and security sector, and is at the helm of Fire Door Maintenance (FDM), a purpose-built, 3,000ft² Training Academy in Bury, Greater Manchester early in 2024. The centre combines classroom and handson experience for installers, inspectors, specifiers, and fire safety specialists and professionals; across 22 different types of fire door and component rooms. FDM’s provide a practical hands-on training experience alongside theoretical assessment to improve knowledge, skills and behaviours across the sector, and a 3rd party accredited, on-site inspection team.
Following the fire in Dagenham, Nicola commented: “Non-compliant building materials cause destruction and devastation, and the industry needs to take action to prevent further tragedy.
“All buildings need a digitised, easily accessible ‘golden thread’ of information about their design, construction, and management. This allows materials that pose safety risks to be swiftly identified and removed or not used.
“At FDM by UAP Ltd, we’re the only company in the country to train fire industry workers practically and holistically about the building lifecycle, so they understand completely how fire doors are designed, engineered, installed, and inspected. It’s training that the industry urgently needs, and it’s training that will save lives.” www.fdmltd.co.uk

AV4: The Turning Point Against the Thermal Expansion of Doors
Are you or your customers frustrated with doors that are difficult to operate and unlock? Are you making costly site visits to address issues caused by thermal expansion? If you want to eliminate unnecessary service calls for sticky locks, keeps and hinge adjustments while saving time and money, as well as boosting your sales and brand reputation, then AV4 is the solution to smooth operation in the face of thermal expansion.
A known industry issue, thermal expansion is a natural phenomenon where materials expand when they are heated, and contract when they cool down. This occurs because heat causes the atoms in the material to vibrate more vigorously, which in turn makes them occupy more space. Thermal expansion can have practical implications on the functionality of all door materials, affecting fit, operation and durability over time.
Winkhaus UK, a pioneering force in the door hardware market, has a solution. The newest innovation in autoLocking solutions, AV4, has been designed to directly address these challenges, whilst remaining easy to operate for the widest range of users.
Adapting to misalignment
As a door naturally moves, more force is required to engage the locking mechanism, as the parts no longer align. This means that extra pressure needs to be applied to turn the key, effecting use and functionality for the doorset and triggering call outs for the installer to investigate. However, AV4 has been designed to address these challenges. With wider installation tolerances built into the lock, AV4 requires up to 70% lower force to operate than competitor auto locks and auto-engaging locking solutions.
George Smith, Technical Manager for Winkhaus UK, explains how AV4 is tested, the results, and the benefits this has for the fenestration industry.
George said: “The force required to retract a locking mechanism can be affected by many factors including the quality of installation, alignment of keeps and door maintenance, temperature and building structure. As these factors fluctuate, so does the potential deviation of a door, necessitating meticulous testing against a stepped increase in tolerance to simulate real-world conditions.”
“This imperative assessment aligns with PAS24, the robust security standard governing doorsets and windows, drawing its testing methodology
from BS6375-2. Mandating a maximum force of 2Nm for retracting the locking mechanism, with lower force indicating smoother operation, underscores the commitment to fortified security and reliability.”
Testing against real world conditions
Winkhaus wanted to measure the real-world impact that AV4 can have on a doors ease of use, and invited end-users to test how it operated under thermal expansion compared to other locks on the market.
When it comes to thermal expansion, the industry standard tolerance for doors is up to 5mm with a tolerance of +or-2mm being commonplace. To simulate deviation, packers were inserted in 2mm increments with initial measurements being take from zero deviation. The doors used were from the same fabricator and were formed on the same date and batch of manufacture.
For the testing we benchmarked AV4 against the AV2, the current market leading autoLocking solution and a range of competitors products.
To start the test, we measured the force required to operate without any packers installed, so zero
deviation in the doors used. We expected to see little difference but found that not to be the case with AV4 requiring under 70% less force to operate. All the locking solutions tested met the PAS24 requirement, operating under the required 2Nm force to operate with 4mm packers installed at the top and the bottom of the door. AV4 at this stage required between 36% and 47% less force to operate than the other products tested. Above this point there was a high failure rate with the competitor products tested, and we did not continue testing if locks required more than 2Nm force to operate. AV4 at this point of the testing was only requiring 0.75Nm force, so we continued to increase the number of packers, and therefore deviation of the door.
Beyond 4mm deviation only AV2 and AV4 still operated below 2Nm in the sample of products we tested. At 6mm AV4 continued to operate, and again with 8mm of packers installed – double the industry standard and tolerance for door manufacturers. At 8mm AV4 required only 1.54Nm of force to operate, lower than any other lock we have tested, whilst remaining easy to operate from either key or thumbturn.
Enhanced user experience
AV4 offers significant advantages for fabricators and installers, as it is able to work in situations where other locks might not perform due to its low force to operate. Not only does this reliable locking solution reduce the need for costly replacements over time, but it also minimises the lost time and expense associated with frequent maintenance visits, enhancing the reputation and profitability of fabricators and installers within the industry.
For homeowners, the AV4 offers user-friendly operation, ensuring ease of use for individuals of all ages and abilities. Its low force to operate allows accessibility to everyone, including those with disabilities that affect their ability to grip or apply force to other locking solutions. Additionally, the longevity and reliability of AV4 means that occupants can enjoy the convenience of a single, dependable locking solution throughout their tenure - from children to grandparentspromoting a sense of continuity and supporting the requirements of the future home’s initiative.

Residence 9 Windows Chosen For Old Bank Transformation
26 original timber alternative windows from premium window and door designer, The Residence Collection, have been installed into a former bank as part of a new apartment project.
Partnering with installer Silent View Windows and fabricator CWG Choices, 26 Residence 9 windows were installed in the historic 18th-century building in the centre of Thame Town High Street.
R9 windows in the popular Grained White colourway, featuring leaded glass, were used to provide elements of 19th-century architectural design, replicating the style of the original structure. These windows offer modern functionality and energy efficiency, aligning with the preservation needs of the conservation area. Notably, R9 was the only timber alternative window that was approved during the planning process.
When it comes to sensitively upgrading heritage projects, The Residence Collection has gained widespread approval from local authorities in conservation areas and Grade II listed buildings throughout the UK. This approval allows for a smoother installation process for installers, eliminating a major obstacle to preserving the historical character of these heritage properties.
The selected windows exceed British Building Regulation standards with a u-value of 1.2W/ m²K, offering A++ energy with double glazing as standard. The R9 collection, available in 21 colours, provides optimal insulation and energy savings. For this project, Grained White was chosen, a colour that is one of The Residence Collection’s best sellers.
Jo Trotman, Marketing Manager at The Residence Collection, commented: “This project is a perfect example of how the R9 windows can be used to replicate that heritage feel and look while still being high-performing and energy-efficient. This project opted for a window that perfectly complemented the building while still capitalising on all the other performance qualities that the R9 boasts.
“The transformation of the historic NatWest Bank offices into modern apartments presented a unique set of challenges and opportunities. Retaining the architectural integrity of the original structure was paramount, and the R9 windows provided an ideal solution by combining traditional aesthetics with cutting-edge functionality. The result is a seamless blend of old and new, honouring the building’s legacy while providing contemporary living spaces.”
For 2024, The Residence Collection has been shortlisted for four prestigious awards, including Best Use of Video, Digital Marketing Campaign of the Year, PVCu Systems Company of the Year, and Timber Alternative of the Year.
There is still time to vote for The Residence Collection in all four categories; to vote, please visit: www.fenestrationawards.co.uk/nfa24/. Voting will close soon, so be sure to have your say in recognising the industry’s best.

PART L COMPLIANT
No fuss, no foam, fully compliant
Same quality, service and innovation FULLY COMPATIBLE Multiple hardware options available
NOT ONE, NOT TWO, BUT THREE
Not one, not two, but three NFA nominations for AluK and our team. We’re finalists in the Systems Company of the Year category, which is a great testament to our resurgence this year under the leadership of Russell Yates - and a fantastic endorsement of the performance of the whole team.
Given the positive impact he has had since he returned to AluK as MD in September 2023, it’s no surprise that Russell himself is nominated for Director of the Year, and we’re particularly pleased that Ashley Whitehead, our Technical Engineer, is also amongst the finalists for the Young Person of the Year.
Russell’s priority when he returned was to ensure that AluK is a great company to do business with – and we’re delivering on that with new products, new service initiatives and customer focused investments. He also wanted to put AluK right back at the heart of the industry and, as a widely respected figure with a huge amount of experience, Russell is making sure that AluK’s voice is heard loud and clear on everything from sustainability to Part L compliance.
Ashley Whitehead certainly epitomises AluK’s renewed focus on customer service under Russell’s leadership; and his NFA nomination is in recognition of all the technical support and problem solving he provides to fabricators and installers. Whether that’s training, site investigations, site and factory audits or product testing, Ashley goes above and beyond to make sure customers get the most from their partnership with AluK.
2024 has been a standout year for AluK – with lots of innovation in both product and service. Probably the biggest product development has been our Quik Clip™ clip-in bead system which saves customers valuable minutes on every single door they fit. The side by side demo on our website is certainly worth a look because it shows one fitter glazing a panel using Quik Clip™ in just 1m 33 seconds, compared with another glazing the same sized panel using conventional beading in a massive 5m 19 seconds.
Quik Clip™ was launched in February on our ever popular BSF70 HI bifold, but it is now being rolled out across other systems including our brand new S67 and S140 Lift and Slide sliding doors. Like the Quik Clip™, these new doors have been developed with the fabricator in mind – with the S67 now the fastest to fabricate door in our range and the S140 the ideal choice for all those high end retail enquiries where margins are still fairly buoyant. We’ve also strengthened our team under Russell this year, with some new and some very familiar faces taking up key roles. Jordan Kingman is back in charge of projects, Paul Greenaway is back in an area sales role and Alex Gallop has returned as Head of Marketing, while industry heavyweights Kevin Bonnar and Paul Booth have joined as Sales Director and R&D Director.
We’re currently rolling out a cutting-edge SAP system which will help us streamline our operations, enhance our efficiency and
improve our service offering still further. And, we have relaunched our retail website at alukhome.com/gb/en-gb to help generate warm
leads for customers and we’ve booked our stand at the FIT Show in 2025 – so watch this space! More info at: uk.aluk.com/
The Grenfell Report: The Construction Industry Needs to Wake Up
Nicola John, Managing Director at Fire Door Maintenance, part of UAP, discusses the construction industry’s ongoing struggle to implement post-Grenfell safety standards and the urgent need for comprehensive, holistic training across the fire safety industry.
The Grenfell Inquiry Phase 2 report highlighted catastrophic failings in the tower’s fire safety practices. Inspection and maintenance regimes were inconsistently followed—not just for the building’s cladding but for the very fire doors that were designed to protect lives. Self-closing devices either failed or were missing entirely, meaning the doors contributed to the tower’s destruction and the deaths of its residents. The construction industry needs to wake up.
Enforcing post-Grenfell fire safety standards has been a challenge for the industry. Product inspection and maintenance practices on sites haven’t improved sufficiently. A key recommendation of the Phase 1 report was that a “golden thread” of product information should be digitally available, so key details can be easily accessed and updated throughout the
lifecycle of a door. However, a recent survey by the Construction Leadership Council found that 92% of product manufacturers did not see digitalisation as a major concern. Seven years after Grenfell, the industry continues to demonstrate a serious lack of understanding.
The construction industry needs to change its ways, and it needs to start now. To implement systemic change, company leaders must prioritise training and development by creating systemic plans to ensure staff are up-to-date and are working according to best practices.
But it is not enough for workers to understand best practices within their trade: they must understand how to prevent fires throughout the building lifecycle. At FDM, we’re bridging the gap between construction stages by providing holistic training for those in the industry. Every trainee is taught about the trade preceding and following their own, establishing a golden thread of best practice across the industry. We’re also advocating for a central register of qualified operatives— inspectors, maintainers, and installers—so we can ensure fire doors consistently meet the highest safety standards and prevent future tragedies. The Grenfell disaster has proved that fire safety cannot be overlooked in construction. Thouria Istephan, Grenfell Tower Inquiry Panel Member and Architect, summed it up perfectly at the report’s unveiling: “if you work in the construction industry, and you do not feel the weight of responsibility you have for keeping people safe, you are in the wrong job”.

Forget Having To Make Adjustments:
The New Bs 3700 Automatic MultiPoint Locking System From Siegenia
Integrated Self-Adjustment For Safety And Zero-Maintenance Operation
This completely new solution from SIEGENIA offers fabricators tangible added value: the BS 3700 automatic multi-point locking system for doors made from all types of material. One truly unique feature of the innovative multi-point locking system is its integrated self-adjustment mechanism with locking elements and hook bolts. The intelligent design of the elements and the matching frame parts means that, within the functional dimensions of the door, tedious readjustment on site – due to critical installation locations or thermal influences, for example –will no longer be necessary at any point in the door’s life cycle. That saves door manufacturers a considerable amount of time and money.
The principle of the BS 3700 automatic multi-point locking system is as simple as it is effective: when the bolt-shaped locking elements come to a standstill before even reaching the end position – for example because of tolerances when they go into the frame part – they are locked by a backwards pressure protection device. This holds the door leaf in position and ensures that it is securely locked. The automatic 20 mm projection of the hook bolt and main lock bolt also ensures a high level of security with a backset of as little as 35 mm. In addition to the three locking points, the option of activating the child-proof lock also provides peace of mind. It is enabled using the cylinder lock and prevents the lever handle from moving. The door also opens effortlessly and smoothly, because the
low-friction material combinations used in the BS 3700 automatic multi-point locking system are designed for maximum ease of use. This can be further optimised if required by installing an A-opener that opens the door electromechanically. Freely configurable options for end users the new BS 3700 automatic multi-point locking system also boasts outstanding flexibility. All upgrades can be used in any combination, allowing fabricators to configure the multi-point locking system as required to meet the needs of end users – from the optional A-opener or the safety lock to the extension pieces for doors up to 3 metres in height. The TA daytime release also offers additional design freedom and is suitable for retrofitting, too.
Easy fabrication – efficient retrofitting
Door manufacturers benefit from the sophisticated production and installation features of the BS 3700 automatic multi-point locking system. For example, the DIN direction can be changed quickly and easily, simply using the main lock latch. Replacing previously installed key-operated and automatic multi-point locking systems (AS2xxx, BS2xxx or AS3xxx) is also straightforward. Besides replacing the existing multi-point locking system with the new BS 3700, it just involves removing the Q-adjustments in the frame parts and replacing them with F-backings.

CNC Software: The Transformative Tool
Software now pervades our lives in so many ways that much of it has become invisible. We ask Alexa to play our favourite tunes, follow satnavs, and edit photos on our mobiles – all without thinking about the software that makes it possible. But it’s worth pausing to think about software because it has transformed how we live and how we work. And in the manufacturing sector, software is driving improvements in everything from precision to productivity.
With machining centres, it’s often the physical engineering that has our focus. We’re fascinated by the way a multi-axis machine is put together, how the moving parts pivot and slide. We can hear and feel the smooth, finely balanced mechanisms working in harmony. If you have any interest at all in engineering it’s hard not to be impressed. But a CNC machine without its programming is just a collection of cutting, drilling and routing
equipment. It’s not the electricity that brings it to life. It’s the software.
Unleash the power of great engineering
CNC machining software is more than a tool for controlling the production of a profile component. It’s the key to efficiency. It ensures precision. It boosts capability. It helps manufacturers adapt and it supports collaboration. It can connect workplaces and allow volume manufacturing specialists to produce custom models without upsetting their carefully planned work schedules.
CNC software isn’t one standard ‘do-anything’ product. It’s customisable, designed to meet the specific needs of particular sectors or individual businesses, and when the fit is right, software is transformative.
It is possible that I’m biased in software’s favour.
At elumatec, where we have in-house software specialists, I’ve seen the very best examples of what software can achieve. And software does vary. Some of it is fairly basic, offering little more than a way to set up and control the machining centre’s basic operations. If you’re looking at software, I urge you to go beyond that bare minimum. The benefits will be worth it.
The benefits of CNC software
Let’s look first at some of the basic benefits. I’m calling them basic, but their contribution can be significant.
Firstly, CNC software should permit programming and machining to happen concurrently. You should not have to have a machine standing idle while you set up the next job. When jobs are programmed in advance, non-productive machine hours are minimised. One note of caution: It’s vital that programming should be easy and intuitive, and as with eluCad software, it should support functions like 3-D modelling and automated data conversion.
Secondly, CNC software should optimise the workflow, choosing the most efficient sequence of operations that need completing. It should be able, therefore, to ensure faster production and
increased throughput, reducing the overall cost of production.
Thirdly, CNC software should enable more complex machining tasks to be completed than might otherwise be possible. It should facilitate increased precision without the need for operator intervention or reliance on the skill of one key individual.
The final of these basic benefits is by no means the least significant. CNC software eliminates the scrap caused by production errors and can reduce waste. Savings are made on materials, time and all other input costs.
Beyond the basics
It seems impossible, this year, to have any kind of conversation about manufacturing without the subject of AI coming up. While some headlines are alarming, the reality is more nuanced. In CNC software terms, we have already moved towards considerable improvements in management information, issue detection and efficiency. More improvements will follow as Industry 4.0 and machine learning become the norm.
CNC software is already capable of monitoring
machine performance. It can highlight wear and tear and raise maintenance issues before a machine suffers an inconvenient or expensive breakdown. Live reporting with eluCloud software is already transforming how manufacturers operate, providing crucial real-time information for decision making. CNC machinery equipped with this advanced software is capable of troubleshooting. It can optimise its processes and communicate via API with the organisation’s ERP systems or, indeed, with other organisations, enabling effective collaboration on projects.
Software is making automation of manufacturing processes possible, cost-effective and efficient. It is delivering remarkable consistency in production quality and the agility that today’s businesses need to thrive. It is facilitating partnerships and supporting the design of outstanding structures. It is minimising the use of resources like fuel, water and raw materials.
In short, software could be the most valuable of all your production assets. Give it the respect it deserves.
New Products Demonstrate Reynaers’ Commitment To Innovation
Reynaers Aluminium UK is nominated for nine awards at this years’ NFA Awards, including systems company of the year and new product 2024 for its Vision 7 thermal commercial door with unique post-installation bottom adjustment feature.
Central to the ethos of the aluminium windows, doors and facades specialist is a commitment to constant innovation and product research allowing it to update and enhance its portfolio of products –and to ensure it meets customers’ needs.
In line with this the company has already introduced a number of product and software updates, including launching a slimline thermal commercial door – Vision 7 - and unveiling a specialist support structure for its ParallelRoof 100 veranda system.
Vision 7 – Reynaers’ next generation thermal commercial door
Developed specifically for the UK market, Reynaers Aluminium has launched its long-awaited new generation, high usage anti-finger trap thermal commercial door and framing system. Featuring a unique slim bulb-style with a radius of only 40mm, a profile sightline of 81mm, and achieving a U-value as low as 1.1W/m2K, Vision 7 has a unique post-installation adjustable bottom pivot that allows installers to make final adjustments after the door has been installed.
Suitable for a range of ground-floor applications such as schools, hospitals, retail outlets, leisure facilities, offices and entrances to large
commercial buildings, this thermally broken door is an ideal solution to meet the requirements of sustainability-driven projects.
Ian Osborne, UK Product Development Manager, said: “We have listened to a range of stakeholders across the industry and considered all the feedback in developing the Vision 7 Thermal Commercial Door to offer a premium combination of optimal performance and ease of production, as well as providing the slimline aesthetics that architects and developers want to see. It can be manufactured up to 3m height and 120Kg weight; leaf width 1.25m.
“To maximise value and minimise waste, profiles are supplied in a range of optimised bar lengths including 5.1m, optimal for doors up to 2.5m height. Many profiles are available in half and quarter lengths, and for large doors up to 3m mullions and door styles are available at optimal 6.1m or 6.5m lengths. Transom connections are cut straight to minimise milling and the number of components required.
“We have also developed a new style bulb with
a radius of only 40mm to enable the production of slim profile doors with a visual width of only 81mm, which in combination with a wide range of finite component details, enables the production of extremely durable doors that can achieve a U-value of 1.4W/m2K with double glazing units and a lower value of 1.1W/m2K with triple glazing. We also supply a 100mm outer frame so that the system can connect seamlessly to MasterLine 8 windows and doors.
“Well received by installers, the system has been built with a unique post-installation pivot adjustment feature to help to save valuable time on site. This feature means that the door only needs to be fitted once, and then bottom pivot adjustments can made without having to remove the door to make adjustments.
“It achieves a good AWW rating and security and safety of PAS 24:2022 and PANIC: EN 1125+179. The door is subject to continued durability tests and has achieved over 400,000 open and close double swing cycles to date.”
For further information, contact the Reynaers on 0121 421 1999 or visit www.reynaers.co.uk/products/aluminium-doors/ vision-7.
New support system launched for Reynaers’ ParallelRoof 100 veranda
Reynaers Aluminium has unveiled a dedicated structural support system for its ParallelRoof 100 veranda with performance standards and quality of build backed by calculations by structural engineers.
In introducing a dedicated system to support ParallelRoof 100 (PR100) Reynaers aims to make fabricating and installing the system as straightforward as possible. It now includes structural posts and a comprehensive range of components needed to support the canopy and deliver quality of build.
Calculated by structural engineers during the design process, the performance of the system and the dedicated supports have been clearly
evaluated, taking into account wind and snow load for UK use. To help make ordering the system as straightforward as possible and ensure performance levels the Reynaers team has also provided a dedicated ‘Materials Calculation Tool’ for installers.
Used in both commercial and residential projects, PR100 is designed to provide added protection from the elements for outdoors spaces and can be used for external roofing, verandas, shelters and car ports in commercial and residential settings.
Terry Ledwith, Head of Sales for Trade and Retail for Reynaers Aluminium UK, said: “PR 100 is already a popular choice with end users due to its high-end, slimline aesthetic and solid performance in the face of the British weather.
“However, in offering a support system that matches the build quality of the canopy we have removed the need to source a separate structural system and can instead offer a more comprehensive component solution that bears the hallmark of Reynaers’ quality..
“For an external product such as a veranda or canopy, trust in quality is essential and Reynaers has taken every step to build that into the structural support system.”
