CLIPPINGS & MUSINGS

June is Internet Safety Month!

June is Internet Safety Month which is probably one of the best times for people to be reminded about all about the most up-to-date best practices that will simplify online business methods securely and help us all to stay safe online.

The wonder of the www, whilst brilliant in so many ways, can be quite a high-risk place, where the technology in your hands can literally lose many days of work or worse, huge amounts of money. Despite the warnings, patches, upgrades or investment in new systems, generally resolving a problem online tends to come about after the horse has bolted. There are many consequences that relate to unsafe

practices online, but even the most tech-shy can take preventative steps to keep their business and social platforms in better shape.

Phishing emails and the people behind them are getting much more clever, with bogus websites and forms that really can and do replicate the most trusted areas on the World Wide Web.

Staying safe from scammers and hackers is getting harder but one of the trusted rules remains the same. Not everything seen online is trustworthy, and always check the source, by looking at the url to see if it is trusted.

Don’t ruin any device because you think it is safe. Regularly run security updates on all the systems belonging to a business, don’t just rely on a scheduled scan and sit back. There are some browser plugins that will show a warning if the website being visited is considered dangerous There are also cybersecurity tools that run real-time protection which will stop viruses and malware before it has had a chance to infect a system.

Making it easy for criminals tends to come about when new software or

apps are installed onto computers or other tech. The easiest route to remember a password is not always the safest eg: QWERTY, 123456, ‘Iloveyou’ PaSsWoRd, and DEFAULT, are not great ideas - these are in the top 20 list compiled after data breaches have occurred.

Think smart when it comes to cybercriminals - they have had a lot of practice now, however the harder it is to decipher a password, the less likely a business or bank account will be targeted.

The longer and more complicated the password the better and try to have unique passwords for every single account. Use a password manager to keep track of all the ones that are used for both business as well as personally; this will help to keep track of the dozens of unique passwords you use regularly.

Develop two factor (2FA) access on any virtual private network to make hacking more difficult.

Keeping up to date on scams, phishing and the latest hacks doesn’t have to be frightening; but personal information is just that, and it should stay that waypersonal.

This may sound obvious, but do be careful about what goes up on social feeds - photos of holidays look great on Twitter or Facebook, but this also leaves homes vulnerable to tech savvy burglars.

Beyond this, hackers can use social media profiles to work out answers for security questions on bank accounts by looking at birthdates, dogs names and even regular holiday destinations which may be used as passwords.

So take time during Internet Security Month to lock down personal information in privacy settings, create long and unique passwords which can be stored on a password manager, and be very wary of accepting requests online from strangers.

Stay safe while you surf!

ORION CUSTOMERS ARE SWITCHED ON

Hardware specialist VBH (GB) has reported a continued increase in take up of its proteQ10 profile cylinder guarantee.

proteQ10 is a free guarantee offered with each greenteQ Orion TS007 3 star profile cylinder.

If the Orion cylinder is snapped in situ, allowing the door to be opened unlawfully, VBH will pay the resident £2000 direct in compensation, according to the terms of the guarantee.

Orion was launched early in 2021 and has proven to be very popular among manufacturers of all kinds of doors, from residential doors through to bi-folds and sliders.

VBH advise that the guarantee is also proving to be a hit with consumers as the numbers of cylinders registered under the scheme in the combined months of April and May were 25% up on the previous two months.

Gary Gleeson of VBH says, “We get nothing but positive feedback on Orion both from industry professionals and from consumers.

End users really appreciate the fact that their locks are guaranteed to the tune of £2000, and the fact that the operation of Orion is guaranteed for 10 years.

“As consumers, we are all very switched on to all aspects of a potential purchase, and many door buyers are making the simple choice of opting for the installer who is offering proteQ10, over those who don’t.”

VBH has recently introduced a bespoke key alike service to allow Orion cylinders of different finishes and sizes to be operated with the same key.

Further information on greenteQ Orion and VBH’s other products can be found at www.vbhgb.com, by emailing sales@vbhgb.com or by calling 01634 263263

GREEN AND PINKLATEST HOT COLOURS FROM KOLORSEAL LTD

Green and pink are two colours that appear to be increasing in popularity at leading colour coating specialist, Kolorseal Ltd. The darker greens available in the Farrow and Ball range alongside the paler RAL design colour windows are creating a stir with consumers, the Kolorseal team has noticed.

During this current, turbulent economic climate, many homeowners are preferring to inject capital into their properties, to bring a return on investment for their homes when the time comes to sell. Considerable interest has been shown in these specific colour tones.

Bold and vibrant colours it seems, are being introduced by people looking to add real value, security and striking visuals to their houses. The architectural design of older properties can be beautifully enhanced with a variety of green shades, which help buildings to retain their classic authenticity.

“Beautifully styled composite front doors in vibrant and interesting colours make a building stand out in such a positive way,” comments Deborah Hendry, Managing Director, Kolorseal Ltd.

Equally for more neutral, light-coloured homes, the colour possibilities are almost endless. The Kolorseal team has noticed that more unusual pastel colours are becoming popular with pink and aqua blue becoming a more frequent request.

For Deborah, it is possible for consumers to experiment with bolder coloured front doors knowing that they can match a similar shade to the windows that will enhance the overall appearance and make it truly different to other homes.

Deborah continues, “Door colours used to send out clear messages of communication years ago, with red being inviting and welcoming to visitors. Green shades however are said to denote signs of wealth, prosperity and good health, which is a positive reflection given the times we are living in currently.

Adding that little extra wow factor really can make all the difference to the appeal of a property on the housing market. Colour really does do the trick when it comes to adding value.”

The increasing trend on pink doors it would seem stems from the younger generation looking to add their personality into the appearance of their home. In today’s society, pink reflects youth, cheerfulness and generosity. While many may consider the colour of the entrance door is more about kerb appeal than personality, it does appear to be the touch of individualism home renovators are looking to add.

Deborah concludes, “It is interesting to note the strong colour statements people are making right now, knowing that it is an investment in their most prized possession.

At Kolorseal, we take great pride in each and every project we undertake, ensuring that we create unique, beautiful entrance doors that are striking additions to a home; and which will seamlessly integrate into traditional or modern properties.”

MORLEY GLASS NOMINATED FOR ITS MOST EVER NFAS!

Leading UK integral blinds manufacturer Morley Glass has been nominated in seven categories of the 2022 National Fenestration Awards (NFAs), with a further five nominations for members of its team, including MD Ian Short.

The manufacturer of the Uni-Blinds®, a range of high quality pleated and Venetian blinds that are fitted inside the cavity of a double or triple glazed unit, is hoping to repeat its success in the 2021 NFAs in which it picked up five awards.

Amongst the awards that Morley Glass is in contention for are Integral Blinds Company of the Year, Glass Systems Company of the Year and IGU Manufacturer of the Year, all reflecting the expertise that keeps the company at the forefront of integral blind design and manufacturing. The recently launched Uni-Blinds® pleated blackout integral blind is recognised too, being on the shortlist for New Product 2022 in a hugely competitive category.

In addition, Morley Glass has once again been nominated in the Recycling Company of the Year category. Office manager Jessica Owens is nominated for two awards, and colleagues Charlotte Gilbert and Bryony Shaw are named on the shortlist for Social Networker of the Year and Young Person of the Year respectively. And there’s a nomination for managing director Ian Short too, who is in the running for Director of the Year.

Commenting on the 2022 NFA nominations, Ian Short said: “We’re thrilled to have been nominated in more award categories than ever, particularly given that

these nominations come from the people who know us best – our customers, suppliers and industry peers. We look forward to the presentation event on 5th November and wish everyone who has been nominated in any of the categories the very best of luck!”

BIGGEST INVESTMENT IN WORKFORCE

Listers is giving every employee in the company a ‘Cost of Living Allowance’ of £1,000 over the next 12 months to help them cope with inflation and spiralling energy costs.

The window and door manufacturer has also committed to pay the Real Living Wage as a minimum to new employees in its factory and offices.

At £9.90 per hour outside London, the Real Living Wage is 40p per hour more than the legal requirement of £9.50 per hour.

These measures were introduced by Listers to tackle the twin problems of inflation and employee retention, especially as the company is experiencing increased demand for its products.

“May was our best month on record,” Listers’ Managing Director Roy Frost said. “However, it has become much harder to recruit and retain staff to support our growth, something which the whole country is experiencing.

“We are also acutely aware of the ‘Cost of Living’

crisis: energy bills are soaring, supermarket shopping baskets are up, and the cost of fuel at the pumps is rising.

“We simply do not want to see anyone in our company in financial hardship. Therefore, from the end of June, every employee in our group will receive a ‘Cost of Living Allowance’ of £1,000 over the next 12 months, on top of the guaranteed minimum of £9.90 per hour.”

This decision is expected to cost Listers more than £400,000, which is the single biggest investment since the new owners bought the business in 2017.

“We cannot afford to jeopardise our service levels by losing our good people,” Roy said. Listers makes some of the country’s most soughtafter windows and doors. It sells its products into newbuild developments and to homeowners via a network of installation companies.

Roy attributes the success of the business in part to the knowledge, experience and the culture within the workforce, which he is committed to protecting.

“Our employee retention rate over the last five years has been great – many of our staff have been with us for decades. In fact, only in May we presented 80 Long Service Awards to our staff throughout the group. They are the people that make our company what it is today and in turn look after our great customers.”

In a letter to employees, outlining the new payment structure, Roy said: “We proudly pay the ‘Real Living Wage’ as a minimum to new employees on our shopfloor and offices. We work hard to train and upskill you so you can rise through the pay scales gathering more skills and experience along the way and we have plans to do more of this in the future.

“As a group, we will continue to make investments within the company to grow and secure a bright future for all of you, investing in our people is first and foremost. We are also planning further major investment in our fleet over the coming months and have plans to grow our capacity further and our Aluminium Business to ensure we meet the demands of our customer base. These investments all have the same goals, to make our futures safe and to continue to improve our service.”

DOORS & PANELS

LATEST TO SIGN UP AS NFA 2022 CATEGORY SPONSORS

it’s great to see such an open, honest and inclusive awards where everyone in the sector can take part. With industry participation deciding on who are the overall winners, there is no greater honour than being voted as the best by your peers. We’re looking forward to working the NFAs and being part of such an exciting venture!”

Leading composite door manufacturer, and previous NFA21 winners Hallmark Doors & Panels are the latest marquee industry brand to join the National Fenestration Awards as category sponsors.

Hallmark Doors & Panels were victorious in the 2021 National Fenestration Awards, winning the Composite Door Manufacturer category for the first time. They now join a growing family of industry-leading companies supporting the biggest and most inclusive awards platform in UK fenestration.

Through hard work and innovation, Hallmark Doors & Panels have grown to become one of the leading door manufacturers in the country. Their wide product portfolio covers composite doors as well as composite fire doors, PVCu panels, aluminium entrance doors, as well as commercial products such as composite metal panel options for larger structures.

Lee Clarke, Managing Director of the National Fenestration Awards commented: “Hallmark Doors & Panels are a well respected brand within the fenestration sector and it’s fantastic to welcome a company of their calibre to the NFAs for 2022. They were successful last year in the Composite Door Manufacturer category and we know how proud they are of that achievement. It’s going to be fantastic to work with them and help promote their brand across the wider market.”

A representative of Hallmark Doors & Panels said: “we’re excited to be joining the National Fenestration Awards as category sponsors. As an awards platform,

In addition, a second representative also commented: “to win the Composite Door Manufacturer category in the 2021 National Fenestration Awards was an amazing honour. It’s testament to the hard work and effort being put in by everyone at the company and it means a great deal to us. To be able to support the NFAs in 2022 is very exciting and we’re looking forward to a great awards day and night in November!”

THE NEXT DOOR MARKET BATTLE IS INTERNAL

In a further sign of the strength and belief in the growth of aluminium within wider fenestration, there is a growing battle in the emerging market of aluminium internal doors.

From what I have seen so far, there appears to be healthy growth potential in what is still a very new niche within the market.

Aluminium internal doors

If you’re on Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter or Facebook, you’ll have seen images of fancy homes or major renovations where a large proportion have opted to go for the steel effect and glass when it comes to internal doors.

Aluminium internal doors are exploding in popularity. I do believe that the trend can be traced back to social media influence and internal design trends energised by the likes of Pinterest and Instagram. But the end result has been the creation of a new niche within fenestration, which has its links in the wider residential aluminium sector.

Steel-effect aluminium internal doors aren’t shiny brand new, they have been around for a fair few years now, but have played around the periphery of the sector for a while. Only in the last two or three years have they begun to really break through into what you would consider as more of a mainstream, again boosted by popular images of the products on social media.

18 NATIONAL FENESTRATION AWARDS MAGAZINE

Origin Global is the latest aluminium company to announce a new range of internal single doors, internal French doors and internal fixed screens: Of course, if we’re going to trace back the origins of black-framed metal internal doors we have to talk about Crittall ®. Their name is synonymous with steel windows and doors. Born in 1849, their brand is to steel windows and doors as Hoover is to vacuum cleaning. When you think about steel windows and doors, you think Crittall ®.

That steel-effect look is now being popularised within the aluminium market. But you can see a clear trend over the last five years for demand for that type of products thanks to data from Google Trends: They join other companies such as Aluco, FGC and a small selection of others who have been selling aluminium internal doors for a little while now. In the years ahead I expect other aluminium systems companies to add an internal door option to their product portfolio as demand grows.

Huge growth potential

If I’m being honest, considering how popular steel-look internal aluminium doors have been on social media, I would have thought demand would have been a little more advanced than it is right now. I’ll put that down to pandemics and otherworldly events that have set many other things back.

As it is, we now appear to be at the start of a race to capture what I believe to be huge growth potential in what is still a niche within the wider door market. I maintain that social media will play a huge part in that growth. Image-based platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, even Twitter, will become a huge driver of interest in the product and will in turn generate plenty of leads. There just needs to be enough suppliers and installers out there on hand to make the most of the demand.

It’s easy to see why they are so popular. The sleek Black lines with minimal frames, stunning hardware, maximum light between rooms and no painting of wood. They are a product that is not only “on trend”, but are practically very useful and suit a number of internal décor styles. That being said, aluminium internal doors are not the cheapest internal door available. They will retail in the low four-figures, which by internal door standards is expensive. Internal timber doors are considerably cheaper, but the low-end versions are nowhere near comparable in quality to their aluminium counterparts which we are talking about.

So there is going to need to be some education and expectation management with homeowners. Not everyone will be able to afford them. But for those thinking about it, who might have the budget, there are plenty of USPs with aluminium internal doors which can make them a healthy seller within the internal door market.

As for installers, aluminium internal doors present an ideal additional selling opportunity. Many are already familiar with aluminium windows and doors, so the addition of an internal door shouldn’t pose too much work. It’s a product which we know is already in demand. It’s a product we already know is very stylish. The consumer is already aware of them, it seems to be just a matter of making them available. I have argued in previous articles that in a downturn installers and indeed fabricators need to look at new innovations to open up additional revenue streams. This seems an ideal option to me.

Over the next few months and years, I expect there to be a race for dominance in this relatively new niche. And at that point, it will stop becoming a niche and will be its own legitimate small market.

BISON - LEADING THE WAY WITH GENESIS VS

BISON Frames (UK) Ltd has long been established as a leading market fabricator of premium quality windows & doors together with a beautiful selection of composite door options. With over 50 years experience in manufacture it’s little surprise that the company has once again been nominated as Vertical Sliding Window Company of the Year in the #NFA2022.

Marcus O’Boyle, Business Development & Marketing Manager believes the success and recognition of the business is a result of the robust systems, attention to detail and consistent standards kept by the team individually and collectively.

Marcus comments, “We are all delighted by another NFA nomination. It is clear recognition from customers and suppliers across the industry that Bison is a business that is shaped around their needs. The awards alongside the FENEX exhibition next year provide a useful opportunity for us to reinforce the strength of the BISON brand.

Repeat business and new custom alike are the result of a considered approach to supply and with good business relations a primary focus. At each step of the process from order through to delivery we ensure every single order is handled with care helping our customers enhance their own business reputations. ”

Whilst BISON is acknowledged as a company with a premium end product designed for the mid - high end of the market, the development of the range has been methodical, with a careful eye on evolving consumer demands and trends at the forefront. With distribution to most locations across the UK, the team is proud of the reputation the company has earned within the industry.

Marcus continues, “In terms of providing the best, The Genesis Collection has been designed, developed and refined over many years to ensure both end users and trade customers have high levels of confidence in our products and service.

The end result is a beautiful, aesthetically pleasing range of products that deliver both technical performance and complement one another.

Our regular customers return to us because of the benefits they bring to their reputations. We often receive positive feedback on our service and products and this shows our appreciation that, to be successful, we need to pay careful attention to the needs of our customers”

Every single item in The Genesis Collection is designed and manufactured to exact specification with security, energy efficiency and building regulation requirements covered. Manufacturing a wide variety of excellent quality products is at the heart of the company, with a team dedicated to reinforcing that craftsmanship with dedication across all parts of the process.

Marcus concludes, “This is our 20th year of manufacturing the Genesis brand, one of first was the Vertical Slider which is now established one of the best examples in the country. In addition we have some very exciting new products plans, due for launch next year, aimed at the premium end of the market.

The NFA nomination represents great industry recognition and should we go on to win would further highlight the quality we bring to the sector. Our attendance at FENEX will also ensure that we can continue to build our brand as a premium, market leading fabricator and the two things work very well together to showcase BISON

Winning the award would mean a lot to us and we hope that all our customers and friends across the industry will give us their support by voting for us on the NFA website at the following link: www.fenestrationawards.co.uk/vote/ ”.

PART L COMPLIANT ALUMINIUM AS STANDARD WITH SHEERLINE

Tougher Part L requirements don’t need to be a cause of concern for suppliers of aluminium products. In fact, if you choose the correct system supplier – these tighter standards can help give you an edge in a market that’s set to become more competitive as the cost of living ‘crisis‘ begins to encompass more middle income households.

With an ever-expanding range of Part L compliant aluminium windows, doors, bi-folds and roof lanterns – Sheerline’s customers are reaping the benefits of choosing a modern aluminium system. Designed around Sheerline’s innovative Thermlock® technology, which sits at the heart of every product, Thermlock® multi-chambered thermal breaks are made from a material that is almost half as thermally conductive as Polyamide.

This coupled with their increased size means that Sheerline meets the new standards with standard double glazing – helping customers continue to sell the same spec of products, without adding cost. With Sheerline, an aluminium U-value of 1.4 comes as standard.

While other systems companies are busy trying to shoehorn a solution into their legacy systems, either adding cost via foam inserts or forcing customers to ‘upgrade’ to expensive triple glazing to meet these new standards, Sheerline customers are left with a competitive advantage and a clear easy to understand product offer.

Sheerline customers can also be confident that when thermal requirements tighten even further in 2025 as part of the Future Homes and Buildings Standards – they’ll be ready once again to succeed in an everchanging marketplace.

To put yourself ahead of your competition and to remove the headache of the new Part L regulations contact us on 01332 978000 or email info@sheerline.com.

EUROCELL ENHANCES OUTDOOR LIVING SOLUTIONS TO MEET INCREASING DEMAND IN THE SECTOR

Eurocell has extended its range of outdoor living solutions with the launch of new contemporary garden room, pergola, and veranda designs.

Customers can now create bespoke and inspirational living spaces that marry the functionality of indoors with the beauty of the garden. Whether it is for home working arrangements, simple relaxation, socialising or exercise, additional rooms or protected spaces set in a tranquil garden environment provide a flexible, value adding, and minimal maintenance way to enjoy a better connection to nature and all its wellbeing benefits.

The new solutions will also create business growth opportunities for fabricators and installers as homeowners look to expand their living spaces and invest in solutions that provide built-in flexibility with a contemporary style.

Kyube Plus Garden Room

The Kyube Plus builds upon the popularity and proven performance of the existing Kyube garden room solution, delivering a modern and naturally styled outdoor space that perfectly complements its surroundings.

The Kyube Plus modular garden room is a high-quality construction and is delivered in prefabricated forms to ensure quick and simple installation. Highly insulated to provide all-year round comfort, the new Kyube Plus option is available in 13 sizes ranging from 2 x 2m up to 5.8 x 3.3m. For customers requiring a bespoke solution beyond the standard sizes, Eurocell can also create one off designs. Additional features such as front canopies and storage extensions are also available to add further sophistication and practical benefit.

Clad in vertical panels featuring natural FSC larch redwood, or PVC-U, the exterior appearance is available in six colour choices. The anthracite grey frame colour and satin black door furniture are designed to perfectly complement any cladding choice. To illuminate the new space, double-glazed sliding patio doors with the option to add an extra front window on larger sized rooms, ensure light will cascade in.

Fully insulated with an electric panel heater, the space is soundproofed, and the full electric pack with plug sockets and lighting offers functionality from day one. The interior’s blank canvas based on OSB board is the perfect backdrop on which to create an individual look and finish. Options also include a plastered finish.

From quick installation to low maintenance, from high style to multiple sizing options, from a myriad of designed finishes to a 15-year guarantee on performance, the Kyube Plus garden room sets a new standard for outdoor living solutions.

Oasis Pergolas and verandas

Whilst the British climate can often be a challenge, the installation of a stylish pergola or veranda can provide the perfect garden space in which to enjoy the outdoors all year round. Extending the home and garden footprint, the new Oasis range offers a stylish appeal with practical benefits, helping make the most of gardens in all weathers.

The Oasis veranda is available in both a glazed roof and polycarbonate, with the polycarbonate roof coming in four different colour options. In addition, there is the choice of three frame colours and two types of leg, guttering and footplate, meaning they can be customised to taste.

Eurocell has also introduced the Oasis pergolas range. The Deluxe option takes the pergola to a new level of sophistication and style. Thanks to the introduction of automated sliding retractable louvres, users can have the best of both worlds. They can open the roof for unobstructed views, or simply retract the louvres for protection against hot sun rays or rain filled clouds.

Sean Bunyan, Head of Commercial Operations for Eurocell, says: “We are seeing increasing demand for stylish, practical, and flexible outdoor living space solutions. To match this demand, Eurocell has extended the range of garden room, pergola, and veranda options we offer.

“The new range has been created to further enhance the outdoor living experience and deliver greater flexibility and increased value to homes. They require no planning permission, can be installed quickly and, once in place, need only minimal maintenance. Best of all, they create stylish and cost-effective alternatives to the hassle, expense, and time constraints of building an extension.”

BUILDING OUR SKILLS APPOINTS MARK HANDLEY AS PARTNERSHIPS MANAGER

Building Our Skills - Making Fenestration, Glass and Glazing a Career of Choice has appointed Mark Handley as Partnerships Manager.

Formerly Sales and Marketing Director at Consort Limited, Mark has over 30 years’ experience in the fenestration industry in roles spanning fabrication, installation, technical support, sales and marketing. He will effectively ‘be the face of’ Building Our Skills’ activities, liaising directly with employers and other organisations in the fenestration, glass and glazing industry to raise awareness of the work the organisation is doing, and to engage more support.

The appointment is a key part of Building Our Skills’ formal action plan for the next twelve months, which reflects the campaign’s commitment to bridging the skills gap, and working closely with stakeholders to attract entrants to the industry. Building Our Skills also has at its core the objective of encouraging industry employers to upskill their existing workforce, inspiring and encouraging them to see the industry as a home for their long-term career ambitions, as opposed to just a job ‘for now’.

Commenting on the new role, Mark said:

“I’m delighted to be on the Building Our Skills team and part of an initiative whose objectives and activities I so admire. Like all those involved, I am passionate about the industry, and have seen first-hand over many years the amazing career opportunities there are. What I want to do now is play a major part in getting that message to the outside world as a key part of our efforts to help bridge the skills gap.”

Mark will be working hard to raise the industry’s knowledge of Building Our Skills’ various initiatives, details of which can be found on the company’s website.

A GREAT INVESTMENT FOR BUSINESS

Whilst a company can attract potential and new customers from advertising, it can be very easy to ignore investing in a trade show, because the thought of the budget or the logistics is too overwhelming.

However, with so much opportunity there to grow a business it can be a very rewarding means to make a company stand out, if with the right approach.

There remain many reasons to consider FENEX as a viable way to reach each a broader audience that will be extremely relevant to any sales-driven business.

Meeting and connecting with prospective and existing customers is a wonderful advantage that FENEX will provide.

While not every prospective customer will buy directly from the trade show, those on-stand discussions will at least make the company and the team recognisable faces to talk to in response to targeted sales calls.

FENEX will create a much more even playing field and will give exhibitors the same accessibility to prospective customers as their larger competitors. It will allow those exhibiting the same opportunity to impress and inspire.

It will be possible to strengthen existing connections at FENEX as well as a corporate brand in its own right, by reinforcing a company’s position.

In addition to this, FENEX will provide an excellent opportunity for sales teams to be exposed to many different prospects in double quick time.

The speed of the Trade Show environment will help to optimise sales and lead generation strategies. It will be easy to see which sales approaches work so the team can perfect strategies. New sales tactics and marketing strategies can be tested in a fast-flowing and very responsive environment.

For information on how to take advantage of the business benefits to be gained from FENEX please contact the team. www.fenex.co.uk

SACKING YOUR SALES STAFF WAS A HUGE ERROR

2022 is turning out to be a very different year. The fenestration sector finds itself in a very different set of economic circumstances, and winning sales up and down the supply chain actually requires effort once again.

We knew that the boom from 2020 and 2021 would end at some point. So why were sales staff sacked? Why create such a rod for one’s own back?

Sales staff fundamental

What we witnessed in 2020 and 2021 was rather bizarre. No one could genuinely have seen what was coming. So much business was being done since the lifting of the first lockdown that the reality was no one really had to try. Everyone became order takers.

That is obviously not our normal environment. Couple that with ongoing Government support such as bounce-back loans and furlough, the industry was bringing in a lot of money. So you could be forgiven for thinking why some companies thought it was a logical decision to cut back on some, or even all, their sales staff. Money was flowing in with minimal effort, and many people were still working from home. The need for a regular roll call of sales staff wasn’t there.

To have that mindset towards sales staff during that period was very short-sighted. Everyone knew that the upswing in business would not last forever. As with all cycles, when something goes up, it always comes down. Usually, the bigger the upswing, the larger the downward fall, as we are seeing now.

We’re now in a very different place as a sector compared to just 12 months ago. Supplier emails are back in full swing touting for new business. Remember when suppliers were actually rejecting any new

business? Fabricators and manufacturers are now actively looking for new work again, and guess what you need to be able to do that: sales staff.

Whether you’re a fan of them or not, sales staff are always a fundamental part of any business. Whether it’s in installation, fabrication, at systems companies and all others in the supply chain. They are the ones that make the calls, send the emails, drive the hard miles and most of the time get rejected. They do a lot of work to achieve a small conversion rate.

But without that work, no new business gets done at all. Yes they have a high wage bill, probably a company car and some have an expense account, but they’re worth the investment. Especially the good ones who bring in good business on a regular basis.

Starting from behind 2022 now poses a rather challenging outlook for those who cut back on their sales staff. I would wager most of the sector is now moving back into a phase of trying to find new work to maintain the growth that many have experienced over the last two years. Guess who is going to be on the front foot in that race? The ones who kept their sales department!

40 NATIONAL FENESTRATION AWARDS MAGAZINE

Those who cut back on their sales staff are now going to be firmly on the back foot compared to their competition who chose to keep investing in their sales staff. There will be some companies out there who will now need to recruit new staff to be able to get new sales funnels up and running.

The problem is that takes time. It can take 6 months to advertise a position, find the right candidate or candidates, train them, and learn the product suite proficiently before they can begin to make an impact. By which time, the opposition in the market may well have made significant enough gains at your expense.

Tough times are coming, indeed, they are already here. We are now seeing an increasing number of industry casualties, both large and small. We did not see that during the height of the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. Rampant price inflation is making profit margins hard to maintain, and there is general inflation and a cost of living crisis which is causing large portions of the public to cut back on spending.

The very messengers a company needs in this environment, the sales team, are one of the most important assets right now. To think that so many have been shelved in the last two years because business was good at that one moment in time is a critical error in my mind. The companies who maintained their staffing levels throughout the last two years stand to perform the best during this next economic period and could well find themselves swallowing up more market share very quickly. ARE OUR HOMES STILL SAFE WITH NEW TECH?

Hardware is one of those things that can be rushed at the end of a project, but with homeowners currently making investments in their home rather than moving, it could be worth some installers nudging their target consumer market.

This sector has such choice for the end user but it has the potential to be one of those paths that could lead customers to pore over catalogue after catalogue to make their personal choice.

Whilst it might seem like common sense to most of us to have some kind of protection in and around the house, there still appears to be an enormous amount of people who consider the bare basics, that have always worked for them are enough to deter opportunist burglars.

According to Neighbourhood Watch there are a number of principles that homeowners should apply to give them complete reassurance when their homes are empty. Whilst Predictive Policing is being introduced to areas with high crime such as city centres, it is nowhere near as safe an option, so until it is, we have to rely upon a few trusted methods and some ‘Smart Technology’ to keep our castles secure.

Figures show that burglaries during December and January each year, increase considerably with home and vehicle theft still creating higher crime statistics during those months. This is attributed to people simply not checking up on their home security frequently enough - if a burglar wants to try his luck to get in, they will, making it hard for them to break and enter is obviously what is needed.

FROM HELEN DUVAL 2022

Reminding homeowners about their vulnerabilities remains important with drop shots still a big source of revenue for installers and locksmiths.

Neighbourhood Watch recommends reinforcing the WIDE principles as many homes stay safer than those who choose to believe that their current security measures are enough.

Windows - should have locks on each and every one and in some cases where there are old frames there should be two installed

Interior lights - should be left on a timer during holidays or breaks away to deter thieves from trying to enter.

Double or Dead bolts ought to be fitted on doors, including conservatories and garages.

Exterior lights should always have a sensor fitted.

Easter is another time of year when people travel away, it is important to remind homeowners that any keys, money or valuables are not left in full view should anyone look in through the windows. A house, should look occupied and it is always sensible if people mention to their neighbours that they will be away.

Personal safety always remains a focus for manufacturers with lock boxes where portable valuables such as wallets, keys and iPods can be conveniently stored for people on their travels. Made of steel this concept provides peace of mind to store all those important personal items.

Secure locks for the entry doors to a property are essential.

Deadbolts, SmartLocks, Electronic locks, there really is a whole host to choose from for homeowners with different ideas on how to secure their property. There are also many different types for internal doors such as bathroom or bedroom locks where sliding locks have been popular for some time.

Whilst dogs may well protect a person inside the house, they don’t necessarily stop a determined burglar just by barking at them. Professionals will have worked out ways to by-pass canine friends if they have seen weaknesses at a property, particularly in respect of the hardware.

As ever the industry continues to strive to keep homes and cars safe and secure with most reputable companies having introduced free information that includes advice on regulations and technical information on their ranges.

Most hardware catalogues offer sensible advice on buying the most up-to-date products and the relevant industry standards which includes test data and installation advice. It could be well worth a reminder from installers with a mail shot at properties that look vulnerable.

BUILDING OUR SKILLS LAUNCHES ACTION PLAN FOR 2022-23

Building Our Skills - Making Fenestration, Glass and Glazing a Career of Choice has launched its action plan for the next twelve months. The plan reflects its commitment to bridging the skills gap by working closely with employers and other organisations to attract new entrants to the industry. The plan also includes Building Our Skills’ commitment to encouraging employers to upskill their existing workforce, inspiring and encouraging them to see the industry as a home for their long-term career ambitions, as opposed to just a job ‘for now’.

For the first time the plan will also showcase the sheer breadth of career paths that the industry affords, and Building Our Skills will be looking for support from the industry to make this resource as complete as possible. In addition, an employers’ forum is to be created by Building Our Skills to get as much input and support to help promote the industry as widely as possible.

Central to Building Our Skills’ work will be a focus on wider engagement with the Education Sector in order to raise awareness of the industry to a potential future workforce; and identifying and actioning ways to bridge the skills gap through working with people who are seeking a change of direction immediately. The latter means partnerships with the Armed Forces, Ministry of Justice, Department of Work and Pensions, Support Groups and Charities.

The organisation’s focus on the Education Sector will see it further develop its ‘Inspiring the Future’ campaign. This campaign has been designed by the Education and Employers Organisation specifically to connect the education sector with the world of work; while also in its plan to target the Education Sector is Building Our Skills’ new ‘Inspiration Days’ programme, designed to open up industry factories and facilities for school visits.

With upskilling existing industry employees being a key objective, Building Our Skills has developed a range of Academies to do just that. Its Inspiring Talent Academy is designed to support employers to be able to inspire and encourage employees to commit to the industry as a long-term home for their career ambitions. Its Practical Training Academy is set up to help deliver a skilled on-site workforce and the Business Academy offers a wide range of learning and training opportunities, including specialist sales training.

LEKA WARM ROOF TRANSFORMS PLYMOUTH CARE HOME CONSERVATORY

Leka Systems fabricator Boringdon Plastics has recently completed the fabrication of an impressive 16.5m by 4.2m Leka Warm Roof for a conservatory refurbishment project at Torr Home, a premier care home in Plymouth, Devon.

Torr Home is set in a substantial 19th century country mansion in the highest part of the city of Plymouth. The building has extensive grounds and enjoys panoramic views over the city of Plymouth, as well as Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor. One of the best places to enjoy the views is in the home’s large conservatory. However, like many ageing conservatories, it was too cold in winter and too hot in summer. It was also reaching the end of its useable life and had started to leak, which meant it couldn’t be used by the home’s residents.

A Leka Warm Roof provided the perfect solution. The largescale roof was 16.5m wide with a 4.2m projection which backed into the existing recess. It was manufactured by Leka approved fabricator Boringdon Plastics and fitted by a local builder.

Tom Henwood of Boringdon Plastics said: “The size and scale of the replacement roof was exacting and we worked closely with the builder to ensure everything ran smoothly. The new Leka roof has transformed Torr Home’s conservatory. It is now is a year-round habitable room where residents can enjoy the impressive views at a constant, ambient temperature.”

Boringdon Plastics was an early adopter of the Leka roofing system and is the exclusive fabricator for the county of Devon. Tom says the roofing system’s qualities are second to none. “Leka roofs are suitable for both domestic projects and commercial projects like Torr Home. The flexibility of the roof’s design and its high-end properties mean it can support all retrofit and new build applications, even largescale projects as this one.”

As well as bringing clear benefits to the end user, Leka products also bring benefits to installers. They offer a lightweight and modular system that is fast to fit, saving time on site. The products are approved by jhai, and MFA Building Control to speed up compliance administration and come with a 40-year warranty. Combined with a compelling customer service offering, it’s why Leka products are fast become the go-to roofing products of choice and continues to go from strength to strength.
