CLIPPINGS &

June is Internet Safety Month which is probably one of the best times for people to be reminded about all about the most up-to-date best practices that will simplify online business methods securely and help us all to stay safe online.

The wonder of the www, whilst brilliant in so many ways, can be quite a high-risk place, where the technology in your hands can literally lose many days of work or worse, huge amounts of money. Despite the warnings, patches, upgrades or investment in new systems, generally resolving a problem online tends to come about after the horse has bolted.

There are many consequences that relate to unsafe practices online, but even the most tech-shy can take preventative steps to keep their business and social platforms in better shape.

Phishing emails and the people behind them are getting much more clever, with bogus websites and forms that really can and do replicate the most trusted areas on the World Wide Web.

INTERNET FENESTRATION DIGITAL 04
June is Internet Safety Month!

MUSINGS

Staying safe from scammers and hackers is getting harder but one of the trusted rules remains the same. Not everything seen online is trustworthy, and always check the source, by looking at the url to see if it is trusted.

Don’t ruin any device because you think it is safe. Regularly run security updates on all the systems belonging to a business, don’t just rely on a scheduled scan and sit back. There are some browser plugins that will show a warning if the website being visited is considered dangerous There are also cybersecurity tools that run real-time protection which will stop viruses and malware before it has had a chance to infect a system.

Making it easy for criminals tends to come about when new software or apps are installed onto computers or other tech. The easiest route to remember a password is not always the safest eg: QWERTY, 123456, ‘Iloveyou’ PaSsWoRd, and DEFAULT, are not great ideas - these are in the top 20 list compiled after data breaches have occurred.

Think smart when it comes to cybercriminals - they have had a lot of practice now, however the harder it is to decipher a password, the less likely a business or bank account will be targeted.

The longer and more complicated the password the better and try to have unique passwords for every single account. Use a password manager to keep track of all the ones that are used for both business as well as personally; this will help to keep track of the dozens of unique passwords you use regularly. Develop two factor (2FA) access on any virtual private network to make hacking more difficult.

Keeping up to date on scams, phishing and the latest hacks doesn’t have to be frightening; but personal information is just that, and it should stay that way - personal. This may sound obvious, but do be careful about what goes up on social feeds - photos of holidays look great on Twitter or Facebook, but this also leaves homes vulnerable to tech savvy burglars.

Beyond this, hackers can use social media profiles to work out answers for security questions on bank accounts by looking at birthdates, dogs names and even regular holiday destinations which may be used as passwords.

So take time during Internet Security Month to lock down personal information in privacy settings, create long and unique passwords which can be stored on a password manager, and be very wary of accepting requests online from strangers.

THE LATEST HOT COLOURS FROM KOLORSEAL LTD

Green and pink are two colours that appear to be increasing in popularity at leading colour coating specialist, Kolorseal Ltd. The darker greens available in the Farrow and Ball range alongside the paler RAL design colour windows are creating a stir with consumers, the Kolorseal team has noticed. During this current, turbulent economic climate, many homeowners are preferring to inject capital into their properties, to bring a return on investment for their homes when the time comes to sell. Considerable interest has been shown in these specific colour tones.

Bold and vibrant colours it seems, are being introduced by people looking to add real value, security and striking visuals to their houses. The architectural design of older properties can be beautifully enhanced with a variety of green shades, which help buildings to retain their classic authenticity. “Beautifully styled composite front doors in vibrant and interesting colours make a building stand out in such a positive way,” comments Deborah Hendry, Managing Director, Kolorseal Ltd.

Equally for more neutral, light-coloured homes, the colour possibilities are almost endless. The Kolorseal team has noticed that more unusual pastel colours are becoming popular with pink and aqua blue becoming a more frequent request. For Deborah, it is possible for consumers to experiment with bolder coloured front doors knowing that they can match a similar shade to the windows that will enhance the overall appearance and make it truly different to other homes.

Deborah continues, “Door colours used to send out clear messages of communication years ago, with red being inviting and welcoming to visitors. Green shades however are said to denote signs of wealth, prosperity and good health, which is a positive reflection given the times we are living in currently. Adding that little extra wow factor really can make all the difference to the appeal of a property on the housing market. Colour really does do the trick when it comes to adding value.”

COLOUR

The increasing trend on pink doors it would seem stems from the younger generation looking to add their personality into the appearance of their home. In today’s society, pink reflects youth, cheerfulness and generosity. While many may consider the colour of the entrance door is more about kerb appeal than personality, it does appear to be the touch of individualism home renovators are looking to add.

Deborah concludes, “It is interesting to note the strong colour statements people are making right now, knowing that it is an investment in their most prized possession. At Kolorseal, we take great pride in each and every project we undertake, ensuring that we create unique, beautiful entrance doors that are striking additions to a home; and which will seamlessly integrate into traditional or modern properties.”

COLOUR CAN COST DONE

There are far more options available to homeowners when it comes to designing or renovating a home and which need to be made quickly. The windows and doors on any home make a massive impression and can affect the kerb appeal of a home when it comes to selling. These are really important points for installers to raise with any potential investors.

A touch of colour in the window frames may seem an old topic nowadays with so much choice already on the market, but not to the consumer who may need help, or at least light steering, in the right direction. There is understanding the location, any local council restrictions that may be in place and knowing the difference between rustic warmth or urban cool when planning with homeowners - done properly colour makes for a good success story all round and will naturally lead to referrals.

Once the homeowners have decided on the style of windows for their home, the colour of the frames should then be the next big aspect to discuss. Whilst it may seem like a simple choice, and for some it really is, there are those who need guidance on colour options available for design styles of both windows and doors if it is to add value. There are now so many colour options for windows, doors and their frames - but working from the style of property, will help create a great finished result and of course, those all desired recommendations.

For a traditional property, the window frame colour should contrast well with the exterior of the building. By contrast, for more modern properties trends show that different colours that blend well with the house exterior are preferred. Whichever style of property it is important to give as much choice as possible while co-ordinating with the final appearance of the home. Cream frames for example, work well with red brick houses and are an excellent alternative to white and black. Wooden or timber effect frames also would work well on this type of property in a number of colours.

The consumer needs to know how they want their home to look once the project is finished to determine the right colour choice. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder but generally people do like to feel that ‘value for money’ includes advice on the best options for their own individual house. Replacing windows, is a big project with a big budget for some, and the desire is that the look will not be a trend one year, that does not add true value the next.

Keeping all things the same helps greatly! Matching existing colours or adapting it slightly may be preferable for a more traditional property. What is on the inside will be a good pointer as to the type of finished appearance the owners may want to see once the install is finished. The windows will need to blend in harmony with the rest of the house, not detract or de-value it.

FENESTRATION DIGITAL 08
COLOUR

COST IF IT’S NOT RIGHT FROM HELEN DUVAL 2022

Do remind homeowners about the value they are hoping to add in the long term. Just as houses with neutral shades tend to sell well, so do spectacular modern designs, so going bold should not be a concern as long as it is on the right property.

Neutral colours will always be popular and do tend to appeal to a broader consumer audience. This doesn’t mean just white, cream or wood, there are some great shades of grey, green or navy that are perfect for renovations and with companies such as Kolorseal out there, the vast colour palettes will suit every taste.

Another thing for homeowners to consider is the location of their property. Living in an urban environment for example comes with a lot of dust and grime. Very light and very dark tones will show any dirt so mid-tones will help to camouflage that for longer.

On the interiors, the colour of a frame can really make a value added statement - bold colours against white or pale walls really do add a stunning aesthetic that brings an excellent return on investment. The interior colour of the frames are as important as the exterior and will help to theme a house in all the right ways, with the reassurance of adding true value.

FENEX - A GREAT INVESTMENT FOR BUSINESS

Whilst a company can attract potential and new customers from advertising, it can be very easy to ignore investing in a trade show, because the thought of the budget or the logistics is too overwhelming.

However, with so much opportunity there to grow a business it can be a very rewarding means to make a company stand out, if with the right approach.

There remain many reasons to consider FENEX as a viable way to reach each a broader audience that will be extremely relevant to any sales-driven business.

Meeting and connecting with prospective and existing customers is a wonderful advantage that FENEX will provide.

While not every prospective customer will buy directly from the trade show, those on-stand discussions will at least make the company and the team recognisable faces to talk to in response to targeted sales calls.

FENEX will create a much more even playing field and will give exhibitors the same accessibility to prospective customers as their larger competitors. It will allow those exhibiting the same opportunity to impress and inspire. It will be possible to strengthen existing connections at FENEX as well as a corporate brand in its own right, by reinforcing a company’s position.

In addition to this, FENEX will provide an excellent opportunity for sales teams to be exposed to many different prospects in double quick time.

The speed of the Trade Show environment will help to optimise sales and lead generation strategies. It will be easy to see which sales approaches work so the team can perfect strategies. New sales tactics and marketing strategies can be tested in a fast-flowing and very responsive environment.

BUILDING OUR SKILLS LAUNCHES ACTION PLAN FOR 2022-23

Building Our Skills - Making Fenestration, Glass and Glazing a Career of Choice has launched its action plan for the next twelve months. The plan reflects its commitment to bridging the skills gap by working closely with employers and other organisations to attract new entrants to the industry. The plan also includes Building Our Skills’ commitment to encouraging employers to upskill their existing workforce, inspiring and encouraging them to see the industry as a home for their long-term career ambitions, as opposed to just a job ‘for now’.

For the first time the plan will also showcase the sheer breadth of career paths that the industry affords, and Building Our Skills will be looking for support from the industry to make this resource as complete as possible. In addition, an employers’ forum is to be created by Building Our Skills to get as much input and support to help promote the industry as widely as possible.

Central to Building Our Skills’ work will be a focus on wider engagement with the Education Sector in order to raise awareness of the industry to a potential future workforce; and identifying and actioning ways to bridge the skills gap through working with people who are seeking a change of direction immediately. The latter means partnerships with the Armed Forces, Ministry of Justice, Department of Work and Pensions, Support Groups and Charities. The organisation’s focus on the Education Sector will see it further develop its ‘Inspiring the Future’ campaign. This campaign has been designed by the Education and Employers Organisation specifically to connect the education sector with the world of work; while also in its plan to target the Education Sector is Building Our Skills’ new ‘Inspiration Days’ programme, designed to open up industry factories and facilities for school visits.

With upskilling existing industry employees being a key objective, Building Our Skills has developed a range of Academies to do just that. Its Inspiring Talent Academy is designed to support employers to be able to inspire and encourage employees to commit to the industry as a long-term home for their career ambitions. Its Practical Training Academy is set up to help deliver a skilled on-site workforce and the Business Academy offers a wide range of learning and training opportunities, including specialist sales training.

BIGGEST INVESTMENT WORKFORCE

Listers is giving every employee in the company a ‘Cost of Living Allowance’ of £1,000 over the next 12 months to help them cope with inflation and spiralling energy costs.

The window and door manufacturer has also committed to pay the Real Living Wage as a minimum to new employees in its factory and offices.

At £9.90 per hour outside London, the Real Living Wage is 40p per hour more than the legal requirement of £9.50 per hour.

These measures were introduced by Listers to tackle the twin problems of inflation and employee retention, especially as the company is experiencing increased demand for its products.

“May was our best month on record,” Listers’ Managing Director Roy Frost said. “However, it has become much harder to recruit and retain staff to support our growth, something which the whole country is experiencing.

“We are also acutely aware of the ‘Cost of Living’ crisis: energy bills are soaring, supermarket shopping baskets are up, and the cost of fuel at the pumps is rising.

“We simply do not want to see anyone in our company in financial hardship. Therefore, from the end of June, every employee in our group will receive a ‘Cost of Living Allowance’ of £1,000 over the next 12 months, on top of the guaranteed minimum of £9.90 per hour.”

This decision is expected to cost Listers more than £400,000, which is the single biggest investment since the new owners bought the business in 2017.

“We cannot afford to jeopardise our service levels by losing our good people,” Roy said. Listers makes some of the country’s most sought-after windows and doors. It sells its products into newbuild developments and to homeowners via a network of installation companies.

Roy attributes the success of the business in part to the knowledge, experience and the culture within the workforce, which he is committed to protecting.

FENESTRATION DIGITAL 18

INVESTMENT IN WORKFORCE

“Our employee retention rate over the last five years has been great – many of our staff have been with us for decades. In fact, only in May we presented 80 Long Service Awards to our staff throughout the group. They are the people that make our company what it is today and in turn look after our great customers.”

In a letter to employees, outlining the new payment structure, Roy said: “We proudly pay the ‘Real Living Wage’ as a minimum to new employees on our shopfloor and offices. We work hard to train and upskill you so you can rise through the pay scales gathering more skills and experience along the way and we have plans to do more of this in the future.

“As a group, we will continue to make investments within the company to grow and secure a bright future for all of you, investing in our people is first and foremost. We are also planning further major investment in our fleet over the coming months and have plans to grow our capacity further and our Aluminium Business to ensure we meet the demands of our customer base. These investments all have the same goals, to make our futures safe and to continue to improve our service.”

PART L COMPLIANT ALUMINIUM AS STANDARD WITH SHEERLINE

Tougher Part L requirements don’t need to be a cause of concern for suppliers of aluminium products. In fact, if you choose the correct system supplier – these tighter standards can help give you an edge in a market that’s set to become more competitive as the cost of living ‘crisis‘ begins to encompass more middle income households.

With an ever-expanding range of Part L compliant aluminium windows, doors, bi-folds and roof lanterns – Sheerline’s customers are reaping the benefits of choosing a modern aluminium system. Designed around Sheerline’s innovative Thermlock® technology, which sits at the heart of every product, Thermlock® multi-chambered thermal breaks are made from a material that is almost half as thermally conductive as Polyamide.

This coupled with their increased size means that Sheerline meets the new standards with standard double glazing – helping customers continue to sell the same spec of products, without adding cost. With Sheerline, an aluminium U-value of 1.4 comes as standard.

While other systems companies are busy trying to shoehorn a solution into their legacy systems, either adding cost via foam inserts or forcing customers to ‘upgrade’ to expensive triple glazing to meet these new standards, Sheerline customers are left with a competitive advantage and a clear easy to understand product offer.

Sheerline customers can also be confident that when thermal requirements tighten even further in 2025 as part of the Future Homes and Buildings Standards – they’ll be ready once again to succeed in an ever-changing marketplace.

UK FENESTRATION NOW TO NAVIGATE

Whether we want to talk about it or not, the UK economy is on the brink of something bad. Inflation is out of control, the cost of living is soaring and the chances of the UK falling into recession are already highly likely.

This isn’t a UK problem. The US, EU and other Asian economies are all in the same boat. The flood of spending post-lockdown, plus the trillions upon trillions of dollars of stimulus pumped into the global economy to keep it from collapsing has led to the high inflationary environment which is now causing us all major problems.

As a result, consumer spending is dropping, and consumer confidence is actually the worst it has been since 1974. The public faces a tidal wave of rising prices for pretty much everything. Meaningless boosterism is pointless at this stage. As a sector, UK fenestration needs to be proactive now to navigate the hangover of the boom we have all experienced over the last two years.

Act now to benefit later

The tone of the commentary in our sector is now markedly changed since this time last year. Away from social media narcissism, genuine conversations I am having with key industry contacts show a truer picture. Sales are slowing.

It’s easy to say that sales would always slow from the highs we saw in 2020 and 2021, but it is the pace of the slowdown that we have to keep an eye on.

For example, for many fabricators, money is only made once around 85% of the weekly frame output is made. Even a small drop, coupled with rising prices, could cause serious damage to some fabricators who don’t run a tight ship.

It’s imperative that the sector acts now. We know what is coming down the road. You don’t need to be an economist to see the issues that we’re going to have to navigate. So whilst it is tempting to cut back on things like marketing and advertising, doing so only compounds the problem. Why choose to go withdraw further, just as the market enters a tough period?

The sector as a whole has to start ramping up its marketing immediately and in a big way. Installers need to step up in their communications to the public in order to stay relevant and in front of people’s minds. The battle for the public’s attention becomes harder when there is so much more focus on ensuring the basics like food, fuel and gas are affordable.

FENESTRATION DIGITAL 26 RECESSION
Jason Grafton-Holt | www.doubleglazingblogger.co.uk

FENESTRATION HAS TO ACT NAVIGATE RECESSION

The fabrication and systems company part of the supply chain has already re-engaged in marketing to installers and fabricators in an attempt to win new business. Remember in 2020 and 2021 how everyone stopped taking on new clients? At our place, the marketing emails are back in full swing.

But the recession is coming, it’s not far away. Failure to move now will mean greater damage during the downturn. However, being proactive now, doing the work and hard yards now will pay dividends in the months to come. It takes time for marketing to be effective. Overnight results don’t exist. The bonus we have is that we can see what is coming our way so we can adapt to the changing economic environment.

A part to play

Unlike with previous crises, the fenestration sector has a direct role to play in the long-term plan of reducing the cost of energy.

The products we sell every day play a vital role in improving the energy efficiency of people’s homes. Right now, that is about as big a USP as you could wish to ask for. Right now, many people are concerned about the rising cost of energy and their ability to be able to pay higher bills in the future. This is an ideal opportunity to become very loud about the benefits of upgrading windows and doors in homes to help offset future rises as much as possible.

I understand that with two years of price hikes, for some families, just popping out to buy new windows and doors may not be an easy task. But it remains very worthwhile selling the benefits of investing in homes and wisely spending it on measures that over a longer period of time limit the amount spent having to run a home.

Whilst this has always been a USP of new windows and doors, never has there ever been so much focus on the cost of living and cost of energy as there has been right now.

Our sector has a central role to play in the coming years when it comes to improving homes and it’s something we must make the most of as we face an economy that looks as though it’s about to be headed towards a prolonged period of challenges.

Keeping a building’s occupants happy through improved living is now a very important aspect for homeowners looking to incorporate aesthetic benefits from glass.

Given the technical advances made and the benefits it offers in relation to its production, glass continues to be a distinctive and dominating building material in modern architecture. Architects are using glass facades on houses as well as commercial buildings to give occupants the benefits from added light and stunning views.

Aesthetics in glass design have seen some spectacular architectural creations created over recent years, a large number of glass buildings demonstrate outstanding architectural concepts. London’s ever-changing skyline positively glimmers with glazed superstructures such as The Shard, The Gherkin and County Hall.

The architect leaves a lasting impact in aesthetic choices made when using glass walling, while the energy performance of the glass has become hugely important giving construction companies and builders the scope to offer more glass products for any specific project and its regional climate.

In commercial glazing, where flat glass and coated glass technology is used across building applications such as curtain walling, storefronts, glazed canopies or even simple skylights, the glass will help to demonstrate stylish looks and high performance benefits.

Today, it is impossible to ignore architecture with glass design becoming more important to the end user. Green design is now more important to the conversation when it comes to specifying products for large and small installations. House design has potentially become more important to many who are now working from home and having to live in the place they now work, as the pandemic shaped working lives for many.

Architecturally, glass is becoming increasingly important in terms of overall house design, as people look to improve or renovate by adding larger glass walls both internally and externally to their homes.

Increasingly, people now judge a building or property by its exterior and the impression it leaves. The design of the modern glass facade is now a much more important aspect in the impression it leaves in the eye of the visitor or passer-by. It influences choices made on a global level.

INNOVATIONBEAUTY BEHIND ARCHITECTURAL GLAZING PROJECTS

FROM HELEN DUVAL 2022

The Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur, is one of the world’s tallest building and has been built on one of the country’s most important historic sites. This modern icon can be found near to the stadium where independence was declared in 1957.

Fender Katsalidis, an Australian architectural firm, designed the multi-use hospitality, retail, and residential Merdeka that will have 118 stories when finished. This amazing architectural feat will reach 2,227-feet-including its spire when complete. A two-storey observation deck has also been included in what will be the tallest in Southeast Asia.

The Merdeka 118’s glass façade is a series of faceted windows, which is surrounded at its base with a four acre water park, which all combined helps to enrich this culturally significant building. Nanjing, China, is recognised historically one of the four ancient capitals, however this new megacity houses 9.3 million people.

MAD Architects was contracted for the design concept of the Zandai Himalayas Centre, which is a mixture of stunningly designed tower blocks, low density buildings as well as multiple green spaces. Ma Yansong, the architect, has created a 6,027,790-square-foot megacity comprising commercial buildings, hotels, and residences to echo a modern take on a synthetic ski village that is surrounded by huge mountains.

Low buildings with pitched roofs, are in the centre of this man-made landscape of hills and water features, that comes complete with rising glass-and-metal towers around them. Harmonising people and nature together was a focal aspect of the design concept.

Solar reflection, sound insulation and burglar resistance remain essential on glass curtain walling projects today with increased security now a focal point for architects to incorporate. As the technical performance of insulating glass becomes more and more important during the planning stages, co-operation and creative understanding has to be an essential component in all evolving projects.

With changing legislation, it seems to make so much sense for more glass processors to be involved at the heart of the planning discussions during the collaboration stages.

ENHANCES OUTDOOR SOLUTIONS TO MEET DEMAND IN THE SECTOR

Oasis Pergolas and verandas

Whilst the British climate can often be a challenge, the installation of a stylish pergola or veranda can provide the perfect garden space in which to enjoy the outdoors all year round. Extending the home and garden footprint, the new Oasis range offers a stylish appeal with practical benefits, helping make the most of gardens in all weathers.

The Oasis veranda is available in both a glazed roof and polycarbonate, with the polycarbonate roof coming in four different colour options. In addition, there is the choice of three frame colours and two types of leg, guttering and footplate, meaning they can be customised to taste.

Eurocell has also introduced the Oasis pergolas range. The Deluxe option takes the pergola to a new level of sophistication and style. Thanks to the introduction of automated sliding retractable louvres, users can have the best of both worlds. They can open the roof for unobstructed views, or simply retract the louvres for protection against hot sun rays or rain filled clouds.

Sean Bunyan, Head of Commercial Operations for Eurocell, says: “We are seeing increasing demand for stylish, practical, and flexible outdoor living space solutions. To match this demand, Eurocell has extended the range of garden room, pergola, and veranda options we offer.

“The new range has been created to further enhance the outdoor living experience and deliver greater flexibility and increased value to homes. They require no planning permission, can be installed quickly and, once in place, need only minimal maintenance. Best of all, they create stylish and cost-effective alternatives to the hassle, expense, and time constraints of building an extension.”

ORION CUSTOMERS ARE SWITCHED ON

Hardware specialist VBH (GB) has reported a continued increase in take up of its proteQ10 profile cylinder guarantee. proteQ10 is a free guarantee offered with each greenteQ Orion TS007 3 star profile cylinder.

If the Orion cylinder is snapped in situ, allowing the door to be opened unlawfully, VBH will pay the resident £2000 direct in compensation, according to the terms of the guarantee.

Orion was launched early in 2021 and has proven to be very popular among manufacturers of all kinds of doors, from residential doors through to bi-folds and sliders.

VBH advise that the guarantee is also proving to be a hit with consumers as the numbers of cylinders registered under the scheme in the combined months of April and May were 25% up on the previous two months. Gary Gleeson of VBH says, “We get nothing but positive feedback on Orion both from industry professionals and from consumers.

End users really appreciate the fact that their locks are guaranteed to the tune of £2000, and the fact that the operation of Orion is guaranteed for 10 years.

“As consumers, we are all very switched on to all aspects of a potential purchase, and many door buyers are making the simple choice of opting for the installer who is offering proteQ10, over those who don’t.”

VBH has recently introduced a bespoke key alike service to allow Orion cylinders of different finishes and sizes to be operated with the same key.

GOVERNMENT FAQS ON NEW VENT REGULATIONS

TRICKLE VENT

As of June 15th 2022, the newly revised Building Regulations for England have come into force. The debate around trickle vents today has been as strong as ever, with questions still being asked about compliance, who is liable and help being sought from various industry bodies.

In response to the new regulations coming into force, the Government has today published a small set of FAQs in an attempt to answer some of the more common questions that are being asked. You can follow this link here to that page, or keep on reading below: Approved Document F, Volume 1: Dwellings – frequently asked questions – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

1. Can background ventilators be installed through a wall to meet the Part F requirements, instead of installing trickle ventilators in windows?

Ventilation can be provided through any appropriate means. Installing a background ventilator through a wall that provides the equivalent areas described in Approved Document F, volume 1 can be an acceptable route to compliance.

2. What do I need to do if I already have a wall ventilator in my room?

When replacing a window in a room where there is already a wall ventilator present which meets the minimum equivalent areas in Approved Document F, volume 1, no further background ventilation needs to be added after replacing the windows. Where there is an open-flued appliance in the room, there should be permanently open air vents to supply the air for combustion. These air vents are there to meet Part J requirements. These air vents should not be considered as existing ventilation for Part F and therefore extra vents should be installed.

3. Is a window with night-vent capability a suitable solution for background ventilation when replacing windows?

Providing a night-vent (also referred to as a night-latch), where a window can be locked slightly ajar, is not an appropriate background ventilation solution. This is because windows locked on the night-latch do not provide a sufficiently secure means of background ventilation.

4. When replacing windows, can the Building Regulations requirements be met through a homeowner signing a disclaimer that they will install background ventilation at a future date or that they do not wish to have any installed?

For work to comply with the Building Regulations, all requirements must be met in full. Members of competent person schemes self-certify that their work complies with the relevant requirements of the Building Regulations including Regulation 4(3). The work can only be certified by a member of a competent person scheme if the work complies with the Building Regulations,

FENESTRATION DIGITAL 52
Jason Grafton-Holt | www.doubleglazingblogger.co.uk

NEW TRICKLE REGULATIONS

which includes the requirement that ventilation for the building has not been made less satisfactory as a result of the work.

A disclaimer signed by the homeowner stating that they do not wish to have background ventilators or that they will be installed in future is not a suitable way of complying with the Building Regulations. Work must comply with the Building Regulations and competent person schemes must monitor their registrants and take action against any registrant who is found to have carried out non-compliant work.

Purchasing an indemnity policy is also not a suitable alternative to meeting the requirements of the Building Regulations in full.

5. Will trickle ventilators allow noise and air pollution into homes?

Without good ventilation, there will be more substances in the air that can cause harm to people. This includes pollutants from cooking, cleaning products, hygiene products and fabric furnishings. Diluting pollutants generated inside the home using ventilation is necessary, but importantly, outdoor air quality affects indoor air quality. There is also a high risk of mould in homes which are poorly ventilated.

Approved Document F, volume 1 describes how ventilation systems should be designed to minimise the intake of external air pollutants, by locating ventilation intakes away from the direct impact of the sources of local pollution. Guidance on minimising the intake of external pollutants can be found in paragraphs 2.2 to 2.9 of Approved Document F, volume 1. Trickle ventilators can be located on the less polluted side of the building to reduce the ingress of outdoor air pollution. We appreciate that noise may be an issue with façades facing noisy environments. We recommend that noise attenuating background ventilators are fitted in these circumstances, as outlined in paragraph 1.54 of Approved Document F, volume 1.

The long and short of it is this: unless you already have mechanical ventilators already in place, you’re going to need to fit trickle vents to the windows. There are one or two convoluted loopholes which you could exploit if you really wanted to. One is if 30% or less of the home’s windows are being replaced then no vents are required, but the reality is that would only drag out a full-house installation far longer than it needs to be. The other is where windows are facing a “busy urban road” where pollution would be increased. The vagueness in the definition of what a “busy urban road” is within the rules would allow for some bending.

The reality is that the loopholes are more effort than the act of compliance. In the coming weeks and months, indeed likely the next full year, the industry is still going to be asking lots of questions about the new rules, debating it fiercely and indeed struggling to enforce the new rules on installers.

The recently launched UniBlinds® pleated blackout integral blind is recognised too, being on the shortlist for New Product 2022 in a hugely competitive category.

In addition, Morley Glass has once again been nominated in the Recycling Company of the Year category. This comes on the back of another record year in terms of the amount of post-consumer glass, cardboard and other general waste that Morley Glass has been able to divert away from landfill to generate money for local environmental charities and initiatives via its GreenVision fund.

Office manager Jessica Owens is nominated for two awards, and colleagues Charlotte Gilbert and Bryony Shaw are named on the shortlist for Social Networker of the Year and Young Person of the Year respectively. And there’s a nomination for managing director Ian Short too, who is in the running for Director of the Year.

Commenting on the 2022 NFA nominations, Ian Short said: “We’re thrilled to have been nominated in more award categories than ever, particularly given that these nominations come from the people who know us best – our customers, suppliers and industry peers. We look forward to the presentation event on 5th November and wish everyone who has been nominated in any of the categories the very best of luck!”
