RECORDS SMASHED AT 2024 NATIONAL FENESTRATION AWARDS

As the vote data is being processed, we’re excited to be able to announce that this year’s campaign has been a record-setting year, and by some margin.

The number of people casting their nominations in the first phase of this year’s competition was 5030, that is more than double the number from 2023. The number of votes cast in the second phase of the campaign was a staggering 77,289, which is more than double from the previous year!

These staggering figures are a demonstration of the National Fenestration Awards’ appeal across the entire sector. Now in it’s 11th campaign, the NFAs have firmly established themselves as the premier awards platform in the sector. With it’s unique format, in which people who work within the UK fenestration sector, at all levels, are able to play their part in deciding the winners each year, it is the most inclusive and comprehensive in the sector.

Sarah Rogers from the National Fenestration Awards commented: “these numbers are simply staggering. The

engagement from the whole sector we have had this year has been amazing and we want to thank everyone who has taken the time to nominate and vote this year. It shows the huge desire from our industry to win in these awards and we are very much looking forward to welcoming our guests and finalists to the awards presentation on October 26th at Doncaster Racecourse!”

Tickets to the marquee event have sold out for the first time in the awards’ history, again another indication as to the growing demand to be part of the NFAs. The winners of the 2024 campaign will be announced at Doncaster Racecourse, during which will be an exciting day of racing, hospitality, food, networking and entertainment.

UAP EXPANDS 5 ROLLER

LOCK & FLIP HINGE INTO THE UK MARKET

UAP Ltd has announced the introduction of its innovative 5 Roller 35mm Backset Multipoint Door Lock to the UK market.

UAP Ltd is a leading manufacturer of high-security multipoint locking systems for PVCu, composite, timber, steel, and aluminium doors.

Following its success in Ireland, UAP is now expanding its 5 Roller 35mm Backset Multipoint Door Lock across the UK.

The new lock offers several key features: it is equipped with a fifth roller below the centre, allowing for easier door compression and adjustment. The door frame’s one piece keep suits all door profiles by using a profile related packer system. The frame keep can also be adjusted using only an Allen key, simplifying both fabrication and installation.

The lock’s central hook mechanism replaces the traditional deadbolt, offering stronger resistance to forceful entry. Two anti-lift pins further secure the door by preventing it from being lifted when locked. Its top and bottom hooks move in opposite directions, ensuring one remains locked if the other is compromised.

Boasting up to thirteen locking points, compared to six or eight in typical locks, the 5 Roller Lock provides unmatched security for 99% of doors, making it the market leader in adaptable locking systems.

Gareth Davies, Area Sales Manager for the South West, Midlands, and Ireland at UAP Ltd, said: “The expanded rollout of this lock is just one example of our commitment to product innovation. Where other companies are happy to follow the status quo and continue using the same lock structures, we’re always working to make our door locks as secure as they can possibly be. Building on our success in Ireland, we’re excited to help make UK homes and businesses safer with our advanced security solutions.”

NEW SHOOTBOLT OPTIONS FROM VBH

Hardware specialist VBH has introduced two new greenteQ shootbolt systems for outward opening casement windows. greenteQ iQ Intellect is a non-crop shootbolt that speeds up the fitting process and generates no wasted hardware through offcuts.

It covers sash rebate sizes up to a door-like 1800mm.

VBH advise that adjustable mushroom bolt cams in the middle of the window and adjacent to the projecting shootbolts ensure exceptional weather proofing and effective burglar resistance to the PAS24 security standard.

Intellect utilises modern, strong, low-friction materials, and a clever keep design guides the mushroom bolts into position. Coupled with projecting shootbolts manufactured from steel-reinforced ultra-low friction polymer, this makes for a combination of extremely smooth operation and high strength.

The second newcomer, iQ Superior, combines two bi-directional hooks on the gearbox with adjustable mushroom-headed cams and shootbolts on the extensions to provide exceptional security performance and weather proofing on windows with sash rebate sizes up to 1500mm.

Like iQ Intellect and the original greenteQ Invicta shootbolt, iQ Superior has been independently tested to the PAS24 security

standard. Both new shootbolts are approved for use on Q-secure PREMIUM Plus installations.

greenteQ shootbolts are available in industry-standard 20 and 22mm backsets, so are compatible with most popular PVCu profile systems.

VBH also advise that, as with all greenteQ iQ products, both Superior and Intellect work with Kubu to link windows to a smart home network. This gives the user a host of benefits, including a live check on the open/ closed status of windows, security alerts, weather alerts and more. The windows can even be linked to other elements in the network, so the heating can be set to turn off in a room if a window is opened, for example.

Dan Powell, Head of Brand at VBH says, “Our original iQ security espagnolette proved so popular that it was an easy decision to introduce more casement lock options that are compatible with Kubu.

“Including our original Invicta product, we now have three greenteQ shootbolts for fabricators to choose from. This will increase to four later this year when we unveil another Invicta variant. I’m looking forward to telling you more nearer the time!”

Contact VBH direct on 01634 263300 or by email at info@vbhgb.com for information on the expanding casement hardware range or any other product.

Winkhaus and Kawneer: Partnership and Collaboration Behind the Launch of Kawneer’s Ground-Breaking KWD92 UT+ Window System

Market leading manufacturer of door locking systems and window fitting systems, Winkhaus UK, was proud to attend the launch events of the new KWD92 UT+ Passive House window by Kawneer, a leading provider of architectural aluminium products, following an 18-month development program.

The KWD92 UT+ is designed with the fabricator in mind offering key fabrication benefits. The Winkhaus efficient window system hardware, aluPilot together with Kawneer’s pre-set gasket and corner assembly which potentially offers 30% faster fabrication time.

KWD92 UT+ Window System

Passive House certified, the KWD92 UT+ features a multi-chamber thermal break core and Kawneer’s patented reflex technology. This combination delivers market-leading thermal performance, achieving values as low as 0.6 W/m2K without requiring additional foam inserts in the thermal chambers.

Passive House is a leading energy-efficient building standard that ensures indoor comfort and insulation through exceptional airtightness and thermal performance, resulting in minimal energy usage and clean air. It promotes the construction of healthy, comfortable, and sustainable buildings.

Time plays a vital role in the installation of windows, and the new KWD92 UT+ window system allows fabrication to be up to 30% faster than Kawneer’s current range. Using Winkhaus’ efficient fitting system, aluPilot, aluminium fabricators can manufacture the windows at least 10 minutes faster per window compared to traditional aluminium Euro Groove systems. Faster and easier installation can reduce the cost price of an aluminium window, saving time, money and increasing productivity.

Maria Morgan, UK Product Manager for Kawneer comments “We are delighted with our collaboration with Winkhaus to help introduce our new innovative Passive House window to the UK market. This partnership combines our expertise in sustainable building solutions with Winkhaus’ own commitment to providing efficient sustainable solutions, that together help set a new standard for performance, speed, and efficiency. Together, we aim to provide homeowners and builders with a high-performance Passive House window that not only meet but exceed the requirements of the Passive House standard, ensuring superior thermal comfort and energy savings.”

aluPilot: Click. Click. Done

aluPilot’s time-saving result has been confirmed through extensive testing with manufacturers during the development and roll-out of aluPilot to European and UK systems houses. When multiplied across weekly production, these time savings really start to add up. The drive rod concept of aluPilot simplifies and streamlines the window manufacturing process by eliminating several traditional steps:

• No cutting or punching of connecting rods

• No punching of profile grooves

• No waste from offcuts of connecting rods

• No Screws

With aluPilot, components are clicked into place, making the process more efficient and reducing cutting waste. This innovative system offers a comprehensive range of mounting accessories for easy installation:

Simplified Manufacturing - The streamlined manufacturing process eliminates the need for cutting or punching connecting rods, profile groove punching, and screws. Components click into place, reducing waste.

Easy Installation - Installation is made easy with an external bayonet locking system for secure power transmission, a CLICK mechanism for seamless sash hinge fixing, accessible height adjustment, and tool-free sash installation.

Smart Packaging - Organised and protected components are provided in one box, minimising the risk of missing parts and reducing hardware by up to 70% in burglarresistant setups.

Complete Tool Concept - aluPilot includes essential installation accessories: a Drive Mounting Tool for securing the drive, a Positioning Aid for precise keep placement, Sash Edge Protectors for corner protection, a Drilling Jig for PAS24 screw positioning, and a specialised Jig for Security Locking Modules. These tools streamline fabrication, ensuring efficient and accurate window assembly.

Testing and Development

When integrating the aluPilot system, the components underwent rigorous testing in conjunction with KWD92 UT+. This included weather testing

such as air permeability to EN 12207 (Class 4), watertightness to EN 12208 (Class 9A) and resistance to wind to EN 12210 (Class C5), as well as security testing to EN 1627 RC2 and PAS 24. This testing phase provides seamless compatibility and functionality, ensuring that aluPilot becomes an integral part of the profile design. By testing the “click in” system components alongside the profiles from the systems house, any necessary adjustments or fine-tuning can be made at Winkhaus to optimise performance and reliability, meeting the precise requirements of the system. This collaborative testing process not only enhances the integration process but also ensures that the final product meets high standards of quality and performance.

With over 100 years of combined industry expertise in product development, manufacturing, and testing, the Winkhaus technical and laboratory teams offer proven solutions to ensure the success of its partners’ future innovations. Our added value services include consultation, CAD design, 3D prototyping, product assessment, product development days, and UKAS laboratory accreditation.

Kawneer’s Launch Events

From the Winkhaus UK team, Business Strategy Manager, Andrew Wilkins, attended Kawneer’s initial launch event in Manchester, alongside Aluminium Systems Manager, Alastair Wheeler, and Content and Campaign Manager, Anna Marie Clementson, who both attended the second launch event in Surrey.

At the events, attendees were invited to view Kawneer’s management presentation explaining the features and benefits of the new window product, as well as its alignment to Passive House standards. The team at Kawneer also covered Winkhaus’ efficient window system, aluPilot, in their presentation, crediting the product’s time saving benefits as a contribution to the KWD92 UT+ window’s impressive time saving statistics.

Alastair Wheeler commented: “It was a privilege to attend both events for Kawneer’s launch of the innovative new Passive House certified KWD92 UT+ window. Not only did we get the opportunity to learn more about the process and specifications for the new product, but we also got the opportunity to showcase aluPilot’s features and benefits to the attendees, which contributes to the efficient performance of KWD92 UT+.”

“We are grateful to have worked in partnership with Kawneer to design and manufacture this fantastic new product both in the UK and in our European locations, and I was proud to see the positive reception that KWD92 UT+ received at the launch events.”

When it comes to fulfilling our customers’ orders, Winkhaus has consistently maintained an on time in full (OTIF) performance, with orders typically reaching our customers in line with their request. In August alone, 97.3% of products were readily available when customers needed them, demonstrating our commitment to maintaining a smooth and efficient supply chain for our customers.

Consistent Delivery Performance

Winkhaus UK’s consistent OTIF performance is a testament to our dedication to operational excellence.

Gaynor Walton, Senior Operations Manager at Winkhaus UK, said: “I’m incredibly proud of our team for achieving this remarkable level of performance, particularly during a period when 40% of UK retailers are struggling to meet delivery deadlines and supply chains across the industry are facing unprecedented challenges. This accomplishment speaks volumes about our resilience, commitment, and the robust systems we’ve put in place to ensure our customers receive the high level of service they expect from Winkhaus.”

WHEN PRODUCTION FLOWS…

Is Business Growth Always A Good Thing?

The short answer is that it depends. It’s a key factor in securing economies of scale and critical market share, but growth can be problematic. We could all cite cases of businesses that have grown rapidly and then failed because their infrastructure wasn’t in place.

Of course, growth is essential for a fledgling business. It would be brilliant if such growth always followed a carefully planned route, but often decisions are reactive. A substantial order is secured, and you pull out all the stops to ensure you deliver. It’s a bit chaotic – like a youngster having a growth spurt – who can’t quite manage their gangly limbs and the size of their feet.

There’s Nothing Smooth About The Way You’re Operating.

Unfortunately, beyond the initial stages, many businesses continue to operate like this. They might sense that they should step back and look at their processes and factory layout, but the time never seems quite right. And, in time, as the inefficiency becomes normalised, it can become almost invisible to the team. It takes a new recruit to question why a machine is located in a corner where the light is poor and the impact it’s having on scrap rates.

A New Machine Or A New Approach?

Often, at elumatec, we’re approached by companies seeking extra capacity to

support their growth plans. They believe the solution will be found in a machine that operates more swiftly or incorporates rapid, automated tool changes. Although we have machines that fit their brief – and plenty of them – unless their existing machine is the reason their capacity is constrained, they will still have a problem.

That problem is caused by poor production flow. It can arise from factors including physical space, utilities, machine capacity, operator availability, logistics, storage, quality control and even fatigue.

Sometimes the snagging point in a process is easy to spot. Maybe there’s a build-up of work-in- progress around a workstation? Maybe your staff are hanging around waiting for components because you only have one qualified driver for the forklift? If it’s a minor issue, ask a few questions and you’re well on the way to a solution.

Sometimes, however, a process needs to be mapped to show where the inefficiencies lie and where value is tied up. At elumatec, when we undertake this task for a customer, they’re often shocked at the extra capacity a change to their set-up can unleash. Implementing the recommendations naturally causes some short-term disruption, but the benefits of production flow soon show in a healthier cash flow and improved bottom line.

I want to be clear about something: production flow isn’t just applicable to organisations which produce vast batches of identical items. It’s not simply about automation either. It’s about eliminating waste wherever it arises whether you’re manufacturing tiny widgets or bespoke

A few questions will illustrate where the benefits of production flow can be found.

Use Of Space

How is your space used? Are you paying rent and business rates on square footage you don’t need? Have you leased extra space to store your raw materials, finished goods or work-in- progress? Which contracts have you missed because your haphazard layout made the work impractical?

Use Of Energy

Are you heating and lighting under-occupied space? Have you got machinery on standby throughout entire shifts or forklifts idling while waiting for their next task? Are you lighting spaces that don’t need to be well-lit while team members are unable to read product codes in a dark corner of your warehouse?

Inventory

Are you holding extra stock because you have multiple separate workstations performing the same function? Are your lead times lengthy because you routinely

move part-worked items to storage rather than the next operation? Do you hold extra stock to mitigate the issue of poor planning?

Health And Safety

How is your accident record? Are trips or falls occurring in a cluttered workplace? Do you have employees complaining of fatigue or overuse injuries because of excessive manual handling or poor design?

Scrap

Are products damaged by repeated handling or use of the wrong types of racking or storage equipment? Are jobs rushed because the working environment is cold, draughty or isolated?

Unlock That Flow

Business growth often comes along with workarounds and quick fixes, but temporary solutions all too often become permanent, constraining performance in the long term. But they can be fixed and whether you’re a start-up, scaling up, or a long-established business, you can gain real benefit from getting your production to flow.

Start thinking, start planning and when you’re ready, do ask for help.

DAWS LAUNCHES ITS GUARANTEED NO BOW, ALL-ALUMINIUM COMPOSITE DOOR RANGE

Leading aluminium manufacturer DAWS has launched its “all aluminium” Signature Door collection. Designed to provide residential installers with a stylish, robust and hassle-free composite door – the company believes this is truly the first composite door that gives hard working installers a fit-and-forget product they can trust.

Available in eight of the most popular styles, the PAS24-compliant Signature Door range is manufactured using a strong aluminium-faced slab, ensuring tough and durable panels. At 63mm, it is 30% thicker than standard GRP composite doors and provides installers with a clear sales benefit compared to other PVC/Composite doors on the market, but finally at a comparable price point.

“It’s what the industry has been waiting for – a door that you never get called back to… it’s truly an amazing product that is offered at a similar price to a premium composite door, but with none of the headaches. No more colour fading and no more hinges dropping, and of course no more bowing doors, thanks to its industry first “No Bow Guarantee,” comments Phill Cresswell, Sales Director at DAWS.

Reflecting the high quality of its construction, every Signature Door comes with a 10-year manufacture guarantee and a massive 25-year Qualicoat powder coating guarantee on the paint finish.

The single colour frame and door leaf has a colour matched weather bar, and the doors can be specified in any RAL colour finish. The high security locking system comes with a Kinetica 3 Star cylinder for complete peace of mind.

“The combination of an aluminium outer frame that is rigid and secure, housing an aluminium finished door slab that is put together with meticulous care and attention to detail makes our Signature Doors a perfect alternative to standard composite doors. They also align perfectly with our ethos of offering our customers a headache-free life when it comes to ordering our trade aluminium and steel look products,” continues Phill.

To ensure that every Signature Door is delivered in pristine condition, there’s a small electronic device called a ‘Shock Dot’ attached to the packaging. This clever alarm records whether the product has been inadvertently dropped or knocked during handling which means the product can be delivered nationwide with confidence.

“It’s just one example of many in our commitment to ensuring the best product quality and service that helps to make our customers’ lives easier,” adds Phill. “If you are interested in doing away with your composite doors headaches, then why not get in touch.”

SHEERLINE OFFERS CLIP-ON ALL ITS

Sheerline is now offering versatile clip-on cills across its full range of products. There are two cills available: one for the Prestige Lift & Slide Patio Door and Classic Windows and Doors, and the other for the Prestige Bi-Folding Door and Prestige Windows and Doors.

Both cills have been developed by Sheerline’s experienced in-house R&D team and offer installation options to benefit certain projects. For example, it is easier to manoeuvre the brand’s patio or bi-folding doors around a production environment without a protruding cill attached.

Transporting the frames is hassle-free as they can be stacked with less chance of being damaged in transit. For new build projects, it’s an ideal solution because the cill is protected from potential damage from follow-on trades as they can be retrofitted.

In addition, the cills are prevented from collecting dirt and debris while they’re in situ and other work is taking place as they are fitted after the windows and doors have been installed.

CLIP-ON CILLS ACROSS RANGES

Aside from the practical benefits, the clip-on cill also has aesthetic appeal. It looks stylish and effectively reduces the height of the bottom Outer Frame of the window by 25mm. This means there is a larger glazed area, which is useful for smaller cottage-style windows.

Sheerline’s National Sales Director, Tony Basile, said: “As a brand, Sheerline is continually innovating. The fact our R&D team developed this product in response to a customer request is testament to our commitment to our customers.”

“We recognise the importance of greater choice, flexibility, and offering the right product for every installation,” he added.

Customers can find out more about Sheerline’s Clip-on Cill range by emailing info@sheerline.com or calling 01332 978000.

GARDEN OF EDEN COMPLETES ITS SHEERLINE RANGE WITH NEW INDEX BI-FOLD

Swindon-based Garden of Eden, one of Sheerline’s original fabricator launch partners, has added the new Index Bi-fold to its range, which means the company now carries every Sheerline window and door product available.

The purpose of this is two-fold; to increase customer choice and ensure the business maintains its competitive edge. Since carrying the innovative aluminium range, Garden of Eden has achieved steady business growth, with aluminium now accounting for almost half of all sales.

Garden of Eden took the strategic decision to start fabricating and selling Sheerline’s products as soon as they were available. They had previously adopted other window and door systems developed by Sheerline’s founder, Roger Hartshorn.

Based on this experience, Martin, Terry, and Helen Henly, Directors, felt the new Sheerline range would be forwardthinking, offer exceptional performance, and look fantastic. During the partnership, this has been proven alongside other advantages that make business sense.

For example, Sheerline’s products and systems are more streamlined when compared to alternative products. This is because the same beads and gaskets are used across the range, so there is less stock holding, with many interchangeable parts.

Martin commented: “When we deal with Sheerline, there’s a real family feel and personal service. We aren’t simply a number. I know that if I need to speak to someone I can, so things get sorted out if you’ve got a problem or need a hand with something. If you urgently need something you’ve forgotten to order, they’ll do what they can.”

“But it’s not just the service. When we speak to customers about Sheerline, there are three key things we tell them. First, the low U-values and the fact we can prove these values with evidence – not all companies can do this, second, we explain the quality behind the products as we make them in-house, and third, we explain everything is British made and the aluminium is UK-sourced too,” he added.

SHEERLINE REVEALS INGENIOUS PARTNERSHIP BEHIND BESPOKE HIGHSECURITY LOCKING SYSTEM

West Midlands-based Ingenious Locks & Hardware (Ingenious) has become the latest company to partner with Sheerline. The manufacturer of high-security multi-point locks and hardware developed a bespoke system tailored to the newly launched Index™ Bi-Folding Door system. The partnership saw the respective R&D teams working closely to ensure the oneof-a-kind system met both Sheerline’s and its customers’ needs. This includes in-built, cleverly designed security features, which are an integral part of both company’s products.

The fully symmetrical one-piece keeps are designed to accept a concealed flip-over lever, driving shoot bolts to the head and threshold. This clever design has turned a simple keep into a French passive lock and saved on a set of handles.

These added security features are another way to enable Sheerline’s innovative Index™ Bi-Folding Door system to stand out.

Launched in August 2024, the product was developed to help installers maintain their competitive advantage against cheap imports lacking in quality.

That’s why the new system offers five hook multi-point locking with DUPLEX hook units, a spring assisted centre case for lever applications, and all locks are extendible with connectors to take M8 threaded high security shoot bolts.

As with every multi-point lock developed by Ingenious, this system meets rigorous industry specifications including PAS24 and Secured by Design (the official policebacked initiative).

In line with Ingenious’ ten year ‘fit and forget’ guarantee, operation and compression is smooth for ease of use over the product lifecycle. Keeps are also high security and suitable as standard for double door applications.

Adrian Redshaw, Sheerline’s Product Design Director, commented: “This partnership reflects Sheerline’s commitment to in-built security as standard across the entire product range. It has been a great opportunity working with the Ingenious team to develop a unique system specifically for our Index™ Bi-fold customers.”

“Supporting British manufacturing is part of being a proud British manufacturer, and this partnership highlights the fact we’re open to collaborating with like-minded companies across the UK who share our values for innovative, high-quality, and stylish yet practical solutions that provide tangible benefits for all our customers,” he added. ARE YOU GETTING THE SERVICE YOU DESERVE?

Does your aluminium systems company provide reliable deliveries in 5 days, on all standard colour combinations? Offer an additional 64 colour combinations in 10 days, and an OTIF that’s consistently better than 99%? Plus provide specials that are powder coated at a Qualicoat ‘Seaside’ approved paint plant in just 15 days?

If this doesn’t sound like your current aluminium system supplier, then it’s time to take a serious look at Sheerline – the UK’s most agile and customer focused aluminium systems company.

Nothing ruins a fabricator’s hard-earned reputation for good customer service like letting installers and homeowners down. Few things have such a negative impact on a production environment than products not turning up when you expect them to, or when there are missing components on an order.

That’s why all Sheerline orders come with an itemised delivery report, giving full visibility of what’s going to arrive, by job. We send these delivery reports to fabricators the day before the delivery is due, giving them time to rearrange their production plans if required – but with an OTIF that runs northwards of 99.4%, that doesn’t happen very often.

This high level of reliability doesn’t happen by accident. We’ve invested over £19M (to date) to create a business with optimum levels of vertical integration. From aluminium and thermal break extrusion to injection moulding our key components, and even investing in our own powder coating plant – everything is located on one UK site – giving us an agile and efficient manufacturing capability, that few – if any, of our competitors can match.

Our customers also benefit from our unified system design that allows us to assemble our profiles close to the point of dispatch. Enabling them to operate with the confidence that lets them hold less stock – yet deliver a more reliable service to their customers.

If your business is plagued by poor service, extended lead-times on orders and an unhelpful attitude to finding solutions when issues arise, then it’s time to talk to us.

Reliable UK-based manufacturing at its best. (Our products are pretty exceptional too!)

Call 01332 978000 or email info@sheerline. com to find out how we can benefit your business.
