TRANSFORMS COUNCIL BUILDING AS PART OF THERMAL UPGRADE SCHEME

The installation of Sheerline’s Prestige windows and doors has helped Swale Borough Council improve its’ thermal efficiency as part of its’ cost and energy saving Thermal Upgrade Scheme. The project has been completed in conjunction with Swan Doors & Windows and Waller Associates.

One of the key objectives of the project was to improve the overall thermal efficiency and therefore lower the carbon footprint of the building. Targets such as this are gaining importance as businesses and organisations look to reduce their energy costs and the UK government works towards its’ Net Zero Strategy.

Taking place at Swale House, the council’s head office, the works were completed in stages to minimise disruption to employees and due to the large scope of the project. The key aim was to replace the existing windows, which were original to the offices (built in 1984) and performed poorly as they were only single glazed.

The Sheerline system was recommended for the project because the company met the three specific requirements: a robust aluminium system, excellent thermal properties, and short lead times. Swan

Doors & Windows fabricated and delivered all the windows for this project.

To upgrade the appearance of the building, the council opted for Sheerline’s Prestige windows in Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016). This contemporary colour choice is one of the most popular because of its versatility and ability to enhance the look of most properties or buildings.

Paul Ewart, Director, Swan Doors & Windows, commented: “The Sheerline Prestige range of windows is a robust aluminium system with great thermal efficiency, which ultimately helps the planet and will save on energy costs for years to come.”

“What we especially like about Sheerline’s products is the method of mechanically joining the profiles, the low U-values and the use of standard hardware,” he added.

Waller Associates successfully won several project elements through a competitive tender process, including the installation of the windows. The company installed antisolar glass on every south-facing window to prevent glare and reflect sunlight, which is useful for those who work at a computer. This approach will also prevent the office from overheating during hot summer months.

A representative from Waller Associates commented: “The council is extremely pleased with the new windows, and they look great. In addition, they have dramatically improved thermal efficiency, which means the heating will not be used as much – the benefit of this is lower energy costs in the future.”

This is the second time Sheerline, Swan Doors and Windows, and Wallers Associates have collaborated to transform a building in the South East. The companies previously worked together to transform a large grammar school in Kent.

SHEERLINE’S
PRESTIGE RANGE

Sheerline’s CEO, Roger Hartshorn, comments: “The fact Sheerline was recommended and then selected for this project shows we’ve got the formula right. From the very beginning, we understood the need for a stylish, secure, yet thermally efficient aluminium system. But we also value our installer and fabricator partners and wanted to make life easier for them. The positive feedback from this project proves we’ve achieved this.”

“It’s always a pleasure working with Swan Doors – as one of our trusted partners, we can depend on them to complete every job to a high standard. We look forward to working with them on many more successful projects in the future,” he added.

SHEERLINE UNVEILS LATEST WAVE OF PRODUCTS AT FIT SHOW 2023

Sheerline is celebrating exhibiting at the FIT Show for the first time this year, coinciding with the FIT show’s 10-year anniversary. The whirlwind three-day event was extremely successful for the team, enabling them to meet potential partners from across the industry. It also provided an opportunity for the company to showcase an exciting range of new products.

This includes a new 3 Way option for the award winning S1 roof lantern, which is available from early July. Allowing for larger statement roof lanterns without the need for jack rafters. It continues S1’s distinctive architectural aesthetic customers love.

Attendees of the FIT Show also had the chance to see Sheerline’s new SheerVent, which offers a revolutionary approach to ventilation for roof lanterns and conservatory roofs. This sleek and minimalist roof vent sits perfectly flush with S1’s rafter bars – at last a beautiful roof vent!

The system overcomes the historical issues of leaks and removes the need for muntin bars. In addition, powered actuators can be intelligently automated to make opening and closing the SheerVent as easy as possible. It is fully thermally broken and uses the same high-performance glazing as the S1. SheerVent is available as an option on S1 roofs from early July.

which completes the ultra slim Classic range. This stylish and aesthetically pleasing door features a period-inspired lockbox design. Reminiscent of slim steel doors of the last century – but full of the latest technologically innovations.

Available as single or French doors, with dummy transom bars creating an authentic aesthetic. It features Sheerline’s signature ‘stepped’ look so homeowners can achieve consistent styling inside and outside the home.

As with every product within the Classic range, the Classic Heritage Door is Part L compliant as standard, offering U-values as low as 1.4 W/(m2K) with double glazing, which is the equivalent of an A+ Door Energy Rating. Available from August, Sheerline’s fabricator partners are already indicating a high level of interest in this newest addition to the Classic range.

Last but not least Sheerline has announced a Z transom launching later this summer. This enables customers to create an aluminium reverse butt joint, allowing for fully internally glazed, fixed next to opening, window combinations. This elegant solution eliminates the need to use external glazing, costly reverse adaptors or dummy sashes helping with competitive tenders. Further evidence of Sheerline’s commitment to product innovation.

Sales Director, Tony Basile said: “First, we’d like to say ‘thank you’ to everyone who stopped by the stand and said hello during FIT Show 2023. It was great to catch up with so many familiar faces and meet new ones too. We’re busy following up on leads but want to invite any partners or potential partners to get in touch if they’re interested in any of the new products we showcased.”

“We’re constantly innovating and looking for new solutions to old problems within the aluminium industry. It’s a fantastic time to join the Sheerline family – regardless of whether you’re an installer or fabricator, we’ve got support in place for everyone,” Tony added.

Another addition to the Sheerline product line that was showcased for the first time at FIT ‘23 was the Classic Heritage Door,

TENTH YEAR OF FIT SHOW PROVES BEST EVER FOR MORLEY GLASS!

The 2023 FIT Show was the busiest show to date for Morley Glass, whose team were inundated with interest in their premium quality shading and privacy solutions, especially from installers seeking to unlock the sales potential of its market leading, easy to install systems.

So successful was this tenth year of the FIT Show that Morley Glass has already announced it will exhibit at the next event in 2025.

This year’s show was particularly special for Morley Glass as it also marked its 25th anniversary, a milestone which the team celebrated with the industry in a variety of ways. This included being a major sponsor of the show and the PIGS networking evening, and through a free chocolate bar prize draw that proved hugely popular with visitors.

Twenty-five FIT Show visitors won a prize after picking up and unwrapping one of the winning chocolate bars, including Bradley Gaunt from Made for Trade Windows who won a package of four motorised Uni-Blinds® integral blinds worth more than £1000. The prize draw was, however, just one of the big attractions of the Morley Glass stand created by White Rose Exhibitions, which also featured a stunning 2.0m x 2.5m video wall and a host of eye-catching Uni-Blinds® integral blind displays.

Over three packed days the stars of the show were undoubtedly the Morley Glass systems and products that were making their debut. Its new integral blind system for flat glass rooflights piqued the interest of installers through its ability to offer a balance of long term operational reliability with elegant looks, and the new switchable smart glass system appealed to many installers working on high-end residential projects.

Delighted with the show, Ian Short, MD of Morley Glass commented: “What an amazing FIT Show – so much so that we are already looking forward to the next one in 2025! The turnout was fantastic, and it was good to see a continuous flow of visitors to our stand, which has helped us build some exciting new relationships, as well as giving us the opportunity to catch up with our existing customers and industry partners.

“We’ve spent 25 years developing a range of premium privacy and shading products and systems which we passionately believe offer massive sales potential to installers.

As anyone who visited us at the FIT Show will have seen, we partner with the world’s leading manufacturers including ScreenLine® integral blind systems manufacturer Pellini S.p.A.

which means our customers can offer end-users the highest quality products of their kind and I think that is only going become even more important in a more competitive window and door market.”

As it did in 2022, Morley Glass deployed an extensive marketing campaign to support its presence at the FIT Show, with a particular focus on social media. So successful was this creative campaign that the company generated more VIP ticket registrations via its unique link than any other exhibitor, even surpassing its 2022 figure!

Morley Glass is the world’s largest manufacturer of bespoke integral blinds created using ScreenLine® systems. Its Uni-Blinds® products are manufactured at its Leeds factory and supplied to customers in the shortest lead times, with complimentary nationwide delivery in as little as 10-12 working days when ordered by 10am on Thursdays.

Uni-Blinds® installers benefit from a full suite of marketing and point-of-sale assets, including blind sample packs and brochures, along with unrivalled technical support for total peace of mind. Find out more at www.morleyglass.co.uk.

MORLEY GLASS INVESTS IN MAJOR SHOWROOM RENOVATIONS AT LEADING WEST YORKSHIRE INSTALLER

The UK’s leading integral blinds supplier, Morley Glass, has invested in major showroom renovations at Wakefield-based B&P Windows, helping them to transform their outdoor showsite.

During 2022, B&P Windows began transforming existing buildings into state-of-the-art showrooms dedicated to all things aluminium. In total, there are three brand new spaces where homeowners are able to browse their entire range of aluminium windows, entrance doors, bi-folding and sliding doors, as well as aluminium lantern roofs, flat glass roof lights and even internal doors.

A major part of the plans was to display a variety of high-end integral blind options throughout the new showrooms. As part of a long-established relationship between the two companies, Morley Glass agreed to invest in the spectacular new showrooms, displaying a range of their superb integral blind products, including the SV Slider cordless system, the W Smart system and the C System manual control.

Director of B&P Windows, Justin Grafton-Holt, commented: “We have always received fantastic support from Morley Glass throughout our many years working together. Their customer service has always been top notch and no one else comes close when it comes to integral blinds.

The aim of these new aluminium showrooms is to display the very best the booming aluminium market has to offer. But there is also a natural affinity between aluminium and integral blinds. Both are high-end products so there is very much a natural fit between these two product groups. We are particularly impressed with the W Smart solar-controlled blinds. They certainly give the wow factor when we have clients in our showrooms, and being able to operate them all via a single remote is a classy touch.

We are once again grateful for the support in B&P Windows shown by Morley Glass and very much look forward to increasing our sales of integral blinds even further in the coming years!”

Ian Short, Managing Director of Morley Glass, said: “We are excited to have played a major role in the creation of these new aluminium showrooms. Our partnership with B&P Windows goes back nearly two decades, and they have grown with us along the way. What is exciting to see is that they have recognised where the market is headed and invested themselves in fantastic new spaces to be able to take advantage of the rise in demand for aluminium products.

There is a wide array of integral blind systems on display at B&P Windows, not only in their new aluminium showrooms but also in their existing window and door showrooms as well. We know that our partnership is only going to be more profitable for both companies in the years ahead and we’re excited to watch the success of this new investment flourish!”

Integral blinds are not the only area where the two companies work together. Since 2019, B&P Windows has been supplying Morley Glass with all of their post-consumer glass waste which is then sent to the on-site glass crusher in order to be recycled. This vital source of material means more recycled glass enters the circular manufacturing system, reducing carbon emissions and helping to fund the local investment fund that Morley Glass uses to invest in local community projects.

The new aluminium showrooms at B&P Windows are now open to the public with or without appointments. To find out more visit: www.bandpwindows.co.uk

CONTINUED COMMITMENT TO GROWTH SEES IT FURTHER INVEST IN EDGETECH’S FUTURE

Quanex is renowned for their commitment to investing regularly in their companies across the world to ensure they can provide the highest quality of products and services. This dedication to their businesses and customers plays an important part in achieving their strategic goal to grow the company’s revenue to $2 billion per annum.

One of the beneficiaries of Quanex’s ambitious investment plans is their subsidiary company Edgetech, who are specialists in creating marketleading insulating glass spacer systems. With Quanex’s support, by the end of 2023, Edgetech will have completed their 2-year plan to invest a combined amount of over £4 million in their UK and German manufacturing facilities.

Edgetech Coventry has concentrated on updating and improving their manufacturing capabilities to keep up with growing demand and to ensure Super Spacer® will remain the leading flexible spacer bar on the market. To support this aim, they have also upgraded their internal testing equipment, which will be essential in developing and refining their future innovative products.

Edgetech Heinsberg has also sought to further expand and increase its market share in mainland Europe and the Asia Pacific regions. They have installed another new Super Spacer® manufacturing line and are in the process of commissioning an additional vapour barrier and tape slitting capacity, while also ordering their second dedicated silicone compound mixing cell. To support this expansion, they have secured a new building to house the additional products and are in the process of investing in a new R&D facility to drive new product development, customer support, and quality.

LEADING IGU MANUFACTURER PADIHAM GLASS RENEWS INVESTMENT WITH SUPER SPACER®

Padiham Glass, part of the Emplas Group, has renewed its commitment both to its state-of-the-art glass manufacturing facilities, and to valued spacer supplier Edgetech, by investing in another automated Super Spacer® application line.

Founded in 1980, Padiham has consistently invested in the business to ensure its customers receive an exceptional quality of products.

In 2004, the company became one of the early adopters of warm edge technology when it purchased its first Super Spacer automated line, as part of a wider investment program that saw it greatly expand its manufacturing and warehousing space and introduce its second toughening plant.

Additional investments

were made when the Emplas Group acquired Padiham Glass in 2018, and today the company operates a cutting-edge, increasingly automated glass manufacturing facility, which has been further modernised by the installation of a brand new Forel vertical IGU Super Spacer application line.

“By constantly investing, Padiham is able to offer customers the highest quality IGUs, consistent lead times, and competitive prices,” comments Managing Director John Spiby.

“The new line will allow us to further expand our operations, and bring outstanding IGU products to even more customers around the country.

“We’d like to thank Edgetech for their support

– Super Spacer plays an integral role in ensuring our units offer consistency, longevity and superb overall performance.”

Tony Palmer, Edgetech’s Head of Sales, comments: “It’s hugely gratifying for us to see Padiham Glass continue to thrive and grow.

“Their commitment to investment and innovation has meant they’ve been consistently ahead of the curve, and we’re proud to supply them.

“We look forward to working with them for many years to come.”

Padiham manufactures double and triple-glazed sealed units, using the highest quality components – including glass from SaintGobain and Pilkington – and finished in low-e coating.

WORKS OF ART: SUPER SPACER® HELPS TO BRING LANDMARK GALLERIES TO LIFE

Edgetech’s world-renowned Super Spacer® has been integrated into the window units of thousands of striking and ambitious buildings around the globe – including dozens of stunning art galleries and museums.

The Twist is part gallery, part bridge and part sculpture – a 1,000 square-metre landmark that spans the Randsleva River in the Norwegian forest. Ten quadruple-glazed insulating glass units make up the building’s structural façade, with the freeform units having been manufactured using Super Spacer® TriSeal™. A PVB film blocks the UV radiation to shield the priceless artworks within from sunlight. Also located in Norway is the Salmon Eye – a giant, fourfloor floating art installation, designed to educate visitors about the vital importance of sustainable fishing.

The structure’s ellipsoidal shape is modelled on a salmon’s eye, with the outer layer made of 9,250 stainless steel plates designed to imitate a fish’s shimmering skin.

The installation weighs an incredible 1,256 tonnes, making extensive use of curved and laminated safety glass units created with Super Spacer® TriSeal™ Flex.

Meanwhile, the Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet in the Swiss mountains aims to tell the story of the country’s long tradition of watchmaking. The building takes the form of a glass double helix which is embedded into the landscape and has the appearance of a giant watch spring. It consists of an all-glass curved facade, a 470-tonne green steel roof, and a striking sunshade louvre fashioned from untreated brass.

Regularly exposed to temperatures of well below -20°C, the triple glazed insulating glass, manufactured with Super Spacer® TriSeal™ Flex in black, has been engineered to achieve incredible U Values of just 0.5 W/(m²K).

Edgetech Managing Director

Chris Alderson comments:

“Whether in the Swiss mountains, Norway’s arctic climate, or the hot deserts of the Arabian Peninsula, Super Spacer® TriSeal™ has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to easily withstand the toughest weather conditions to offer outstanding overall performance.

“For us, it’s immensely gratifying to see our products help make some of the most architecturally ambitious buildings in the world a reality.

“This is especially the case when the structures themselves are just as impressive as the artworks they were designed to contain.

“As architects continue to strive to push the boundaries of what is possible, Edgetech’s products will continue to enable them bring their visions to life”.

CNC RECYCLING SIGN UP FOR FIT SHOW 25

Nationwide UPVC Recycling company CNC Recycling were overwhelmed with the success of their debut appearance at the FIT Show 23.

It was an inaugural exhibition for CNC Recycling who took the opportunity to offer its recycling of old windows collection services to all fabricators and installers alike and also their recycled products which were on display.

Over the course of three packed days the Sales team welcomed a host of visitors to the stand to discuss UPVC Window Recycling.

The response was so big and the amount of leads generated from the FIT Show that CNC Recycling has already signed up and secured its FIT Show space for 2025.

Highlight on the stand was a Magnum Recycling cage full of UPVC offcuts with a competition to guess how many in the Recycling bin with one winner guessing correctly at 1084 although the highest answer was 50,000!!

Sales & Purchasing Director Ian Ward said “ We had an excellent first FIT Show. Our stand was so busy it was such a terrific

turnout with a continuous flow of visitors to our stand which has not only helped us build some exciting new relationships moving forward but strengthen those existing partnerships

It was great to see so many of our customers and suppliers who visited our stand and to catch up with them and it is always special to meet new people within the industry, the three days just flew by. It is a really exciting time for CNC Recycling at the moment and the FIT Show was the perfect platform to showcase this. The whole team enjoyed the experience “

A huge thanks to both Nickie West and all the organisers at the FIT Show who put on a very successful FIT Show 23 and CNC Recycling are extremely thankful for everybody who took the trouble to visit us at our stand.

THE ROLE OF COLLABORATION AND PARTNERSHIP IN DRIVING INNOVATION

In fiction and on film, innovation is often portrayed as the product of a single mind. We see the tortured genius, mad scientist or inventor spending a lifetime on an incredible new machine. While it makes a good story, it’s not the best way to get results. Rather than thinking that innovation is something we do in isolation, we should embrace the idea that it’s driven when people get together.

When we face a challenge, if we’re in isolation, we only have our own experience

to guide us. And no matter how smart you are, there will be times when that experience isn’t helping us solve the problem at hand. How many times have you been struggling with an issue, and someone comes along and solves it in moments? How often have you performed that trick for someone else?

At elumatec’s Infocenter, where we regularly bring together diverse groups of customers, we often see long-term problems solved in minutes. A different viewpoint, a different industry or a different

skillset may provide the insight that makes the answer clear.

Partnership and collaboration as a strategic approach

We don’t need to wait for organised events to benefit from others’ experience or expertise. I believe we should be seeing partnerships or collaborative ventures as a key part of our business strategy, actively seeking create them. Knowledge is all around us and people are ready to share.

Many businesses are already benefitting from working with those in academia, bringing the very latest ideas, research and technology directly into their

strategic to is are very and technology their

operations. Now, perhaps more than ever before, technology is crucial for a business which wants to maintain or improve its market share. There’s a sense that new ideas must hit the market, fully tested, ready to be rolled out, rapidly and at scale. How much easier is that when you have the broader skillset and resources of a collaborative partnership?

Better together

But what makes the right partner? Should it be an organisation like yours? That’s a tricky question to answer. It’s true that some things naturally seem to fit together, especially when they are similar organisations operating in the same market. But think about this: bacon and eggs or fish and chips are classic partnerships. That’s not because their constituent parts are alike. It’s because they are different but complementary. They’re good separately, but they both step up a level and become irresistible when they’re put together. Apologies if your stomach’s rumbling. Let’s go back to problem-solving in industry.

Believe in people

When one mind isn’t good enough we need to tap into multiple sources of ideas and inspiration. And here we should be careful that we don’t wear blinkers. Often the best ideas come from unexpected sources. A group of managers could sit in endless meetings trying to come up with the

next big product idea. Meanwhile, your receptionist looks at your building’s entrance and wonders who built that structure above the door … Multiple sources don’t just provide different ideas, but also different opinions, backgrounds, skillsets and experiences. Think inclusive. It’s easy for male-dominated teams to forget the needs of 50% of the world’s consumers. It’s hard for the tech-savvy to comprehend the struggles of those who aren’t. Believe in people and remove barriers. Capitalise on the know-how from different sectors and enjoy the benefits of crossfertilisation.

You can’t lose when you create the win-win

A collaborative approach doesn’t guarantee you’ll launch a world-leading innovation, but you’ll likely see motivation and energy levels boosted. You’ll have extra accountability and momentum in project delivery. You’ll resolve issues. You’ll make friends.

In Stephen R Covey’s classic book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, you’re advised to create “win-win” situations. That’s what a real partnership offers, so be prepared for give and take. Share your knowledge, your experience and your resources. With the right

partner, you’ll get as much back in return. You’ll be stronger and, importantly for any business, you will share responsibility and ownership, and you’ll spread the risk inherent in any new venture.

At elumatec, we know the value of real partnerships. We know that however good an organisation is in isolation, it’s better when it is both supported by and offers support to others. We aim to build partnerships with all our customers. The technologies we supply have been honed in response to our customers’ feedback and needs. Our partners have shared insights which have inspired our team and driven innovation.

Innovation is rarely the product of an isolated mind, but it’s often found in a collaborative approach.

2023: THE YEAR SO FAR

Dan Powell, Head of Brand at VBH, has issued an update on how the year is developing for the hardware manufacturer. This is what Dan has to say:

“2022 was always going to be a tough act to follow. Having had such a successful year, our bar was set high for 2023.

We are very happy to advise that at the time of writing in June, everything is going according to plan.

Market and Customers Health Update

In terms of the top line, sales, we are meeting our increased targets. Business is tougher than it was for all of us a couple of years ago, but we have been very successful in seeking out additional sales to new and existing customers. From our perspective, the section of the market that we deal with remains in good health, despite the spectre of a downturn hanging over us all.

New Appointments to Strengthen Departments

We have made changes to our processes and made new appointments to help secure this new business and to ensure that we continue to offer our customers the top-level customer service that they all expect.

We have reduced the responsibilities of the Customer Service team to give them more time to process their customers’ orders and deal with incoming queries quickly and efficiently. We have done this by strengthening our internal sales department with the addition of Gareth Dix, who moved internally from a field sales role. This takes away the ‘sales’ function’ from Customer Services. We also encourage customers to use our VBH24 online shop. Orders received through VBH24 need minimal handling by our team, so hit the warehouse almost immediately.

We have further strengthened both our Technical and Marketing teams with the

additions of Callum Norris and Ben Shephard. These new appointments allow us to provide even better pre and after-sale support to our customers. In April, we bolstered our external sales team with the recruitment of Nick Taylor in the role of Regional Manager for the midlands. Nick is vastly experienced, and is very customer focused.

New Product Development

We have added a number of new products in the first half of 2023 to keep our customers at the forefront of hardware development. Our new greenteQ Velocity door hinge is superquick to fit and is tested to PAS24. This is the perfect hinge to fit on the opposite side of the door to our new greenteQ Q-Bolt door lock, which is also PAS24 tested and boasts the biggest hooks on the market.

The enthusiasm with which the market has greeted the greenteQ iQ range of window and door locks has surprised even us! These locks can be linked to a smart home network via a Kubu home hub. The user can then set up various alerts including checks on the open/ closed/locked/vent status of their windows and doors, or even create weather and pollen level alerts. They can link to other items in the network, too. So for example, they could set the heating so that it switches off if a window is opened. There are many more benefits and our customers have been quick to see them. Perhaps this open-minded approach to new product innovation and services is one of the reasons why VBH customers continue to prosper in an uncertain market.

On Time in Full Delivery Performance

Our purchasing team continues to work hard to ensure that stock is available for our customers when they want it. We have just recorded our highest On Time In Full delivery figure of 98.89% for May.

National Fenestration Awards

Once again, we are grateful that we have received enough nominations from our friends in the industry to have reached the final short lists in a number of categories at the prestigious National Fenestration Awards.

We are hoping to be voted Best Hardware Company for the fourth time in five years, and have also made the cut in the following categories:

• Best Hardware Company

• Best Door Component (greenteQ Orion 3 star cylinder)

• Best Window Component (greenteQ iQ Security Lock that works with Kubu)

• Best New Product (greenteQ Clearslide patio door locking system)

• Best use of Video

• Best Trade Counter (VBH Swansea)

• Best Digital Marketing Campaign (Q-Smart electronic handle with fingerprint recognition)

• Best Office Manager (Pamela Paterson at VBH East Kilbride)

• Social Networker (Hayley Martin from Marketing)

• Young Person (Aidan Lynch from our New product Design team)

• Business Development Manager (Jan Holland or Earl Tate)

• Best Director/MD (Simon Monks)

Of course, we are keen to receive as many votes as possible, to ensure that the members of our team who make the trip to the winners’ event in October will have a happy journey home.

You can vote here https://www. fenestrationawards.co.uk/vote/

Right People, Right Customers, Right Products

To sum up 2023 so far, a combination of gaining new business with the right customers, continued product innovation, getting the right people into the right positions, excellent stock availability and a continued focus on industryleading customer service, are making it another great year for VBH.

Thank you to all our customers and partners, and long may it continue.”

REYNAERS NOMINATED AS ALUMINIUM SYSTEMS COMPANY OF THE YEAR

Reynaers Aluminium UK has been nominated as ‘Aluminium Systems Company of the Year’ in the National Fenestration Awards, a testament to its commitment to product innovation, quality and service to its growing customer base.

‘Aluminium Systems Company of the Year’ is one of 11 awards Reynaers has been nominated for, recognising the work the windows, doors and facades specialist does to constantly develop products to support high-spec performance and to make installation and fabrication as easy as possible.

With dedicated product development teams in the UK and at the company’s global headquarters in Belgium, Reynaers uses in house-testing to constantly update products and develop new systems.

This enables the business to support large bespoke commercial projects as well as developing windows and doors for the trade and retail sector that have thermal efficiency ratings as low as 0.8W/mK² without compromising on slim sightlines. By opening a new warehouse last year, the company has also taken steps to ensure products can be consistently delivered with short lead times when needed.

Reynaers has also been nominated for Best Use of Video 2023, Digital Marketing Campaign of the Year, Systems Company of the Year and Training Company of the Year. In addition, a number of Reynaers’ employees have been recognised with Reynaers’ Technical Services Director John McComb nominated as Director of the Year, Digital Marketing Co-ordinator Amaris Grey earning two nominations for Young Person of the Year and Social Networker of the Year, Dee Benning being shortlisted for BDM Sales Executive of the Year, and both Steve Hubbard and Agata Malec earning nominations as Office Manager of the Year.

Reynaers achieves a triple PAS 24 on its market-leading sliding doors

The elegant Concept Patio 130 lift and slide and HiFinity ultraslim sliding door systems, which both offer the sought-after open corner option, in addition to Reynaers’ superior sustainability option, MasterPatio, have all achieved updated intense and rigorous PAS (Performance Assessment Specification) 24 security certification.

Reynaers Aluminium Group is committed to product development and testing with access to seven test centres, an extensive product development team and over 200 engineers through its global network. PAS 24 is a standard of independent testing to measure the security performance of windows and doorsets to ensure they can resist a level of attack from an opportunist burglar.

ConceptPatio 130 is the group’s most popular lift and slide door system and holds a UK market-leading position. It is robust, wellengineered, Doc L compliant, high-performance, competitively priced and, like all Reynaers’ systems, built to last the test of time.

HiFinity, an in-line system, is the group’s high-end option, with its ultra-slim profile, which offers a minimalistic look. It can also be fabricated to a height of over 4 metres and can achieve a U-value as low as 1.0W/mK².

MasterPatio is another high-performance door system offering superior insulation and recycled components, which makes it an ideal sustainability upgrade for any building project. This system can achieve a U-value as low as 0.82W/mK² and is one of nine Reynaers systems that are Cradle-to-Cradle certified. The plan, in line with Reynaers Act – the group’s sustainability strategy - is to have a further nine systems Cradle-to-Cradle certified by 2024.

Due to the slimline design of many of Reynaers’ aluminium solutions, the mechanisms are hidden from sight to

preserve the clean lines required for high-end, design-led installations.

The slimline nature of the products and the demand for concealed components means building in additional functionality and security measures poses a challenge. However, as John McComb, Technical Services Director at Reynaers, explains, the product development team thrive on such challenges, designing components from scratch where needed.

He said: “Product development and innovation is central to Reynaers’ ethos. We are not a company that stands still, instead we have dedicated teams that constantly work to enhance and upgrade our products, continually moving the capability forwards. The launch of a product does not mark the end of its evolution, even when a product is enjoying market success we will continue to research and test how we can bring even more additional value to it.”

New brochures showcase how classic heritage range meets modern innovation

Two new brochures have been designed to showcase the expanding range of heritage profiles available from Reynaers Aluminium UK, which combine traditional aesthetics with modern innovations.

By bringing the products together, the brochures make it easier for readers to see the breadth of the range and identify which style is best suited to their project.

The commercial brochure is designed for architects and specifiers to view the range and its application in large refurbishment and regeneration projects, or simply those with a traditional aesthetic.

The ‘Reynaers at Home’ brochure is designed for homeowners and residential architects to see how premium heritage windows and doors can help to maintain the traditional look of the property whilst offering slim sightlines and unobstructed views.

Terry Ledwith, Reynaers’ Head of Sales for Trade and Retail, said: “Heritage products are continuing to go from strength to strength as a result of the huge interest in character properties and renovation.

“While it is the style of the property that homeowners are attracted to, it is common to see doors and windows replaced with modern systems that help to cut energy bills through improved thermal efficiency as well as improving security.

“Unobtrusive slimline aluminium frames offer a way to replace windows without compromising on the character of a house – and work well in extending properties. In the SL38, Reynaers is also able to provide a traditional finish, which is what many homeowners are looking for – but with the benefits of modern innovation.”

The brochures include the recently expanded SlimLine 68 (SL68) range, which has a 68mm frame depth and is ideal for replacing windows without the need for further alterations. There is also the option to add a new lock plate to the SL38 ultra slim line door system that has been designed to complement the heritage look.

SIEGENIA: A HIGHPERFORMANCE COMPLETE RANGE FOR SLIM LIFT AND SLIDE ELEMENTS

NEW OPTIONS FOR INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM OF DESIGN

SIEGENIA is expanding its PORTAL HS range with new solutions tailored for lift and slide elements with slim profile systems: the new HS 250 compact bogie wheels, the SOFT CLOSE compact and the SOFT STOP compact complete the portfolio for elements with 30 mm hardware groove and allow fabricators maximum freedom of design, as well as tangible benefits for end users.

The focus is on versatility. Suitable for aluminium elements for the first time, as well as for timber and timber-aluminium elements and for the slim PVC profile system Vekamotion 82, the portfolio from SIEGENIA is an ideal solution both for private residential buildings and commercial buildings. In combination with the tried-and-tested HS 400 compact bogie wheels in the classic or height-adjustable version, the 27.5 gear and the 28/28 sealing rail for timber and timber-aluminium elements with burglar resistance up to RC2 or PAS 24, the new solutions from SIEGENIA provide fabricators with a high-performance complete range for slim lift and slide elements.

New bogie wheels: slimline design with fabrication benefits

As a cost-effective solution for lower sash weights, the new HS 250 compact bogie wheels, set apart by their low height, can carry 250 kg sash weight. Their innovative bearing technology, which takes, among other things, the weight distribution of energy-efficient triple glazing into account, provides enhanced smooth running. In spite of having only four rollers, they offer end users a high degree of comfort in everyday use.

Moreover, fabricators will also be won over by the efficient assembly. For example, the height-adjustable version of the HS 250 compact with its integrated precision adjustment supports the compensation of assembly tolerances of up to approximately 3 mm. Lifting the rear of the sash is quick and easy. Benefits also come with the sophisticated design of the new coupling pieces for the square connecting rod, which enables swift, torsion-free fixing. This prevents the development of noise or limitations in the ease of use. The new coupling piece for the square connector rod will now also be used for the HS 400 compact bogie wheels up to 400 kg sash weight.

Convenient: SOFT CLOSE and SOFT STOP in a compact version

The new SOFT CLOSE compact and the new SOFT STOP compact offer convenient operation for end users. While the SOFT CLOSE function brakes the sash during closing and automatically draws it into the locking position, the sash stops just before the locking position with the SOFT STOP function. The braking path of the sash is dependent on the sash weight and the operating speed. In the final centimetres, the sash can be easily and effortlessly slid into the closed position and locked. This manual action over the final few centimetres also enables opening without requiring additional force to activate the damper. Fabricators benefit from the significantly easier assembly of these new solutions. Thanks to their flat and space-saving design, they enable insertion without the hitherto required milling on PVC and aluminium sashes. This means that the stability of the profiles remains unaffected.

Limitless

PORTAL HS provides the best outlook for a light and barrier-free life.

➊ Flood the room with natural daylight. The fixed glazing merges seamlessly into the floor with the ECO PASS SKY threshold. ➋ When the sash is open, the minimal threshold height allows barrier-free access to the outside. ➌ The DRIVE axxent HSA integrated lift & slide drive can also be operated via an app for even greater convenience. When design makes life easier: that‘s room comfort. info-uk@siegenia.com

HOW DURATIQUE SOLVES YOUR BLACK ANTIQUE HARDWARE HEADACHES

With more choice for homeowners in the market than ever before, to win valuable business and continue to thrive, door manufacturers must ensure each carefully considered element of their door offers an exceptional look and function, possessing the detail to truly help them stand out from the crowd. Just one component failing can negatively impact the aesthetic and performance of your door, risking a negative impact on your brands reputation. As the element physically touched on a daily basis, substandard hardware can often be the weak link.

Coastal Group outlines

feedback from door manufacturers valuing DURATIQUE as the “go-to” black antique hardware solution, capturing the sought-after traditional period aesthetic whilst exceeding modern day performance requirements. In this editorial, Neil Jones, Head of Marketing at Coastal Group addresses some of the common problems with black antique hardware, and how Coastal listened to the industry’s requirements, creating the ultimate solution in DURATIQUE.

Problem 1: Rusting/ Failing Hardware

“Finding a black antique hardware solution, you can trust has been a common pain point in the industry” outlines Neil. “Many black antique solutions on the market are made with malleable iron which is susceptible to rusting, causing the hardware to not only quickly fail but also leave nasty stains down your door.”

Coastal note that failing or rusted hardware not only results in time consuming site callbacks, but by extension gives a less than ideal perception of your doors.

To prevent the headache of rusting and failing hardware, Coastal Group outline the following design innovations for DURATIQUE:

• Changed the base material to a robust cast stainless steel

• Applied a textured black coating to deliver the traditional heritage look

• Ensured all fixings and components are stainless steel with their external face finished to match the hardware Coastal Group also comment that DURATIQUE is favoured for companies focused on their sustainability efforts. Often a DURATIQUE lever handle will outlast three of its ironbased alternatives, meaning a significant decrease in raw material, production and site callbacks.

Problem 2: Handle droop

“Another common issue expressed by our customers was problems with play in an antique door handle” Continues Neil. “This means the handle droops, spindle rattles and you have to move it a few degrees to operate the lever - not a great experience for your homeowner!”

These impressions make all the difference, with a drooping handle often leaving a homeowner or visitor questioning what else could be wrong with the door itself.

Coastal Group’s DURATIQUE lever handles are designed with a high quality dual sprung mechanism and highquality spindle, ensuring a nice positive action that returns the handle consistently to its original position.

Problem 3: Consistent Fixings

As the saying goes, time is money. Coastal Group were conscious of this when developing the DURATIQUE lever handles, allowing more efficient production.

“We also had increasing feedback that black antique hardware fixing points were inconsistent, making them awkward and time consuming to fit”

Comments Neil.

“The fixing locations on DURATIQUE handles are CNC machined, to ensure a consistent location and enable fast and efficient batch production of your doors.”

Problem 4: Suited Hardware

Homeowners are increasingly looking for matching furniture not just on their doors but windows

as well.

“DURATIQUE offers a wide range of suited hardware, offering the homeowner a range of beautiful options to dress their door, all made from robust and durable stainless steel.”

“Our curly tail window espagnolette handle has proved especially popular when paired with our matching DURATIQUE curly tail lever handle, providing an elegant traditional feel throughout the property.”

Coastal outline how the DURATIQUE range is having a positive impact in customers’ showrooms with their display board options. “Seeing and feeling the

impressive robustness of DURATIQUE makes it a must-have hardware option on the homeowners’ doors” comments Managing Director Loren Jenner “Our customers are winning business and simplifying their sales process with the help of DURATIQUE display boards in their showrooms.”

Coastal are currently running a limited time introductory display board offer on their DURATIQUE range. If you’re looking to give your sales team a competitive advantage and add quality to your showroom email brooklyn. jenner@coastal-group.com for more information on our DURATIQUE Display Board offer.

TO LINK OR NOT TO LINK; THE CHOICE IS THERE

the mechanical quality and benefits of iQ are replicated in Q-Bolt, meaning that it has the same resistance to manual attack through its large chamfered hooks, which we believe are the biggest on the market. Q-Bolt locks are cycle tested to 50,000 operations and are available to suit PVCu single and double doors, and composite doors, just like iQ. They even utilise the same one-piece keeps.”

VBH state that, like the iQ range, Q-Bolt locks are built to help doors achieve a pass at PAS24, and are approved for use on Q-secure installations.

Gary concludes, “The greenteQ brand has always provided its users with top quality hardware products and, as it expands, it also provides them with greater choices. Whether or not a door manufacturer wants their doors to work with Kubu, they can now make that choice from within the trusted greenteQ range.

VBH, the hardware manufacturer behind the greenteQ range, has reported great take-up of its iQ range of multipoint door locks and security window espagnolettes since launching earlier this year, iQ products are supplied ‘Kubu-Ready’, which means that the end user can quickly and easily link their doors and windows to a new or existing smart home network via a Kubu home hub. Linking will allow them to set up security alerts and open/close status updates, as well as linking the doors and windows to other

kit in the network, such as alarms, lighting and heating for example.

VBH have now added an additional lock range to sit beside iQ. Q-Bolt is perfect for those fabricators who do not want to offer the Kubu upgrade on an individual door or on their door line as a whole.

Q-Bolt locks are the same as iQ locks in most respects, but they do not provide the facility to fit a Kubu sensor. VBH advise that everything else is identical.

Gary Gleeson of VBH says, “All

“The list of the benefits of linking doors to a smart home network are long, and we would welcome the opportunity to explain the functions in person, but ultimately it is up to the customer to choose. To link or not to link; that is the question, and we have the solution!”

To find out more about the door lock options within the greenteQ range, or any other hardware in the VBH range, contact the company on 01634 263263, email at sales@vbhgb.com, or send them a Tweet @vbhgb.

SADNESS AT THE DEATH OF WILFRIED ENSINGER

supply aluminium window manufacturers with the first series-produced insulating bars made from glass fibrereinforced polyamide 6.6. A second production plant built in Cham in 1980 enabled the series manufacture of profiles and other product lines. What today is the corporate group’s biggest subsidiary was established in the USA in 1986. In the years that followed, numerous additional overseas branches were set up in Europe, South America and Asia.

Wilfried Ensinger, who established the family-run plastics processing company that bears his name, passed away on 23 May at the age of 87. The employees of the Ensinger Group mourn together with his family members.

With the loss of its founder, the company says farewell to a passionate engineer, creative inventor and dedicated entrepreneur who – even in the decades following his retirement from the Management Board –was fully committed to the welfare of the company and its employees. Originating in a garage in Ehningen, the small company founded by Wilfried Ensinger in 1966 has grown into an international corporate group that is one of the global leaders in the processing of highperformance plastics.

At the beginning of his career, Wilfried Ensinger

completed an apprenticeship to become a toolmaker and took his master craftsman’s examination. Subsequently he worked as an operations and factory manager in different companies that specialised in mechanical engineering, precision mechanics and the plastics processing industry. He completed a part-time course of study with the degrees Industrial Engineer and Diploma Engineer.

With the aim of producing quality stock shapes and machine components from the engineering plastics that were emerging in the sixties, Wilfried Ensinger launched his own company in Ehningen. Transferring the company headquarters to Nufringen allowed the company to expand its production capacities. A short time later, the production of components through the machining of stock shapes began. At the end of 1977, Ensinger was able to

Wilfried Ensinger never rested on his laurels. Constant development of products and production processes and the cultivation of employee potential were his guiding principles right from the start. In 1997 he handed over the operational management to the second generation and increased his involvement in community and social projects. The Wilfried and Martha Ensinger Foundation, which he and his wife created, sponsors social, cultural and scientific institutions at home and abroad.

In his capacity as president and later honorary president of the Böblingen District Chamber of Commerce and Industry he provided key impetus for committee reform and for improving in-company training. The University of Stuttgart conferred the title of honorary senator on the father of four. In 2005, Wilfried Ensinger was awarded Germany’s Federal Cross of Merit and two years ago, the town of Rottenburg am Neckar made him an honorary citizen.
