Fenestration Digital Magazine Edition 54 December 2023

Page 1

Hello and welcome to the final edition of Fenestration Digital for 2023. As we begin to draw 2023 to a close, we can look back on what has been a vastly different year to the previous two. The sector certainly felt the hangover of the postpandemic boom we all enjoyed after the worst of COVID. Rising inflation, interest rates, energy prices and the cost of living turned trading conditions on it’s head and the fenestration sector was not immune to the effects of that. We saw a great deal of turbulence in the second half of the year and perhaps the ripples of that disruption will continue into 2024. That being said, there are always opportunities to be had where you search for them and the coming 12 months will still present a great new number of new ways for companies to grow and make successful. We just have to work hard enough to find them and nurture them. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year! Team FD

“If You Wipe Your Tears, We Will Help You Smile.”

About Us In the autumn of 2004, following a television show about the plight of unwell children in the UK and the effects that serious illness has on their loved ones, that television show led to many conversations and ideas on how to help these children. From that moment, Wipe Your Tears was born, making a difference A difference is a difference whatever way you look at it. If we could all make a seriously ill child smile for one minute, we would. And if we could make the parents of an ill child feel that someone else cares, we all would, we can and we will. Our support also extends to children who are victims of domestic violence situations and to underprivileged families in the local community.

Mission Statement We want to help children who are in hospital and make lives easier for their parents with a simple Christmas present for the children on the wards, a vital piece of medical equipment or assistance to parents who are staying in the hospital to be near their children. Children who are victims of Domestic Violence situations more often than not are residing in a refuge. Christmas time is usually the hardest time of year to be living in this unforeseen situation, so Wipe Your Tears visits both male and female refuges to hand out smiles with the donations of Christmas gifts which otherwise would not have been received.

UAP BECOMES AMBASSADOR SPONSOR OF 2024 NATIONAL FENESTRATION AWARDS Established in 1996 UAP Limited, a leading hardware and locking systems manufacturer for doors and fenestration, providing products for both domestic and commercial environments, has joined the 2024 National Fenestration Awards as an Ambassador sponsor. Ambassador sponsorships are the most exclusive marketing options within the NFAs, giving sponsors the most coverage throughout the year and on the day of the awards event and presentation. UAP found success during the 2023 National Fenestration Awards by winning the coveted Hardware Company Of The Year category, and a Lifetime Achievement Awards being presented to CEO David Jennings. A £22 million + company with over 100-strong team, UAP operates across seven brands: UAP Fullex, UAP Locking Systems, UAP Intelligent Hardware, UAP Firemongery, UAP TradeLocks, UAP Security Hardware, and online specialist X-Fort. The company launched a new electronic locking device called IONIC earlier this year, which offers an ultra-secure electronic lock which is the first in a series of smart products to be offered under UAP’s Fullex Ai brand. Quick and easy to install, the lock can be operated using a smartphone App, a

fob, a push button on the inside of the door, a thumb turn, or an override key. Speaking on behalf of the NFAs, Sarah Rogers commented: “we’re really excited to bring UAP back on board as an Ambassador sponsor for the 2024 campaign. They supported the awards as a media sponsor in 2023 and had two great successes themselves. They are a fantastic company who do great things not only within the sector but also on sustainability and charity causes so it’s great to be working with such a respected brand!” Speaking about its sponsorship, UAP’s CEO David Jennings said: “It’s great to be joining the National Fenestration Awards again as an Ambassador sponsor in its eleventh year. I have seen the awards go from strength to strength, demonstrating innovation and success throughout the fenestration industry. We’re looking forward to showing our support and recognising the achievements of companies and people working across the sector.” You can find out more about the entire UAP range of window and door hardware products by visiting the UAP website: https://uapcorporate.com/ News about the 2024 NFA campaign is set to be announced soon!

REHAU AND YALE CHAMPION SUSTAINABLE OPERATIONS FOR FENESTRATION INDUSTRY Almost two years on from the launch of the strategic partnership between leading UPVC window manufacturer REHAU and world-leading hardware brand Yale, the two companies are championing local manufacturing to deliver secure and sustainable solutions for the UK fenestration industry. Originally commencing in January 2022, the partnership allows window fabricators and installers to source high-quality REHAU profiles pre-integrated with Yale hardware. The entire product range is jointly tested, meaning that all hardware is PAS 24 approved for maximum security. For additional peace of mind, all homeowners can benefit from the Yale Lifetime Security Guarantee. This means that Yale will pay towards insurance excesses, replacement hardware, homeowner compensation, and costs of immediately re-securing the property should a window or door be broken into due to the failure of a Yale locking mechanism. With the partnership now in its second year, the two companies are actively working to reduce carbon emissions throughout the breadth of the supply chain, from manufacturing through to recovery at endof-life. Gemma Diratzonian, Head of Marketing at Yale Door and Window Solutions, said: “The partnership between Yale and REHAU was founded upon the shared values of market-

leading products, technical expertise, and a sustainable business model, using our combined 200-plus years’ experience for the betterment of the industry. This is something we’re still prioritising 18 months on. “The combination of REHAU’s profiles with Yale hardware presents the ultimate, offthe-shelf, all-in-one solution for fabricators, while we’re also striving to reduce our carbon footprint throughout the supply chain. This means that fabricators and installers can benefit from sustainable products without compromising on quality.” Both companies manufacture in the UK, with Yale’s products bearing the ‘Made in Britain’ mark and being manufactured at the business’ ISO 140001-certified UK plants in Cheltenham and Willenhall. Between 2019 and 2022, the zero-to-landfill Willenhall facility has been able to reduce energy intensity by 23%, alongside improve water

efficiency by 8%. Similarly, REHAU reaffirmed its commitment to local manufacturing with an expansion in production at its Blaenau Ffestiniog factory in early 2022, which was recently awarded the accolades of world-wide ‘Most Improved Site’ and ‘Best Performing Plant’ by the REHAU Group. As part of the partnership, all Yale hardware is also shipped to REHAU’s manufacturing facility in zero-plastic packaging rather than separately, in order to reduce the carbon emissions of logistics and transport. REHAU then delivers its products with lorries that take advantage of ‘green’ hydrogenated oil to its fabricator partners to further minimise impacts on the environment. Further down the supply chain, both companies are engaged in recovery programmes to help improve circularity throughout the UK fenestration industry. Yale employs a CAB Closed Loop Recycling Scheme so that all aluminium is recycled, while REHAU works closely with partner CNC recycling to send old profiles to the company’s PVCR recycling facility in Runcorn. Nihat Ozdal from Denis Windows recently spoke on what the partnership has meant for his business: “The quality of both brands is well-known across the industry, so it was an easy decision for us to make. We’re now able to single-source both our profiles and hardware, which has reduced the administrative burden and generally streamlined the supply chain for us. The fact that both companies manufacture in the UK is an added bonus, as it means we’re able to benefit from shorter lead times compared to ordering from the continent.” Russell Hand, Head of Production Management and Technical at REHAU Window Solutions, said: “Local manufacturing is key to both bolstering the national economy and slashing carbon emissions, and it’s great to see that Yale feels as strongly about this as we do. Together, we hope to forge a path to Net Zero for the UK fenestration industry, and continue to supply high-quality sustainable solutions to fabricators and installers alike.” For more information on REHAU’s partnership with Yale, CLICK HERE.

Season’s Greetings REHAU would like to express a sincere thank you to all customers and suppliers for their continued support in 2023, and look forward to further collaboration in 2024. Wishing everyone in the Fenestration Industry a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Windows. Reinvented for modern life. www.rehau.uk/windows

Made for Trade Celebrates 40 Years of Unparalleled Innovation and Excellence December anniversary sees pioneering North East manufacturer raises glass to celebrate a staggering four decades at the forefront of fenestration. In a world where a lot can happen overnight, rolling the clock back 40 years brings visions of an entirely different era; one where the UK was even yet to see the arrival of a Compact Disc let alone online sales and domestic 3D printing. The fenestration industry was however heading into its PCVU boom time and one business was set to shake up the industry in more ways than one; known in the years to follow as Made for Trade.

Bradley with Richard Gaunt in todays Head Office Show Room with the new Korniche Flat Glass product

Originally established as Aanco by Richard Gaunt in 1979, the company was officially incorporated on December 13th 1983, and since then has evolved into a powerhouse in the industry. A business that began as a supplier and installer of windows and conservatories to the retail market throughout the 1980s and 1990s, it moved from an original location in Sheffield to the North East, and soon became known for raising the bar and doing things differently in that busy PVCU sales era. It wasn’t long before an enviable reputation was firmly established in the Tees Valley area; becoming known for unparalleled quality in both products and service. As well as delighting customers by offering unbeatable prices, the company invested in the region with its inaugural purpose-built Teesside factory, soon followed by a show village to engage with consumers and showcase the products for which they had already become known. That same quality-led ethos has remained at the core of the business for the last four decades, and during its transition from retail to trade with fenestration products that moved with the times and market demand. The company steadfastly remains a family enterprise and still provides the best quality products at the best prices, whilst that famous North Eastern friendliness is reflected in the industry’s best customer service and support from what is now a workforce in excess of 250.

How it started: The start of the Korniche journey, Bradley and Ashley unveiling the Aluminium Roof Lantern at FIT Show 2016.

The strive to constantly improve production and manufacturing took a huge leap forwards in the early 2000s when Richard’s son Bradley joined the team, bringing with him qualified experience in lean manufacturing – a step change that was set to revolutionise not just their home-grown company through newfound efficiencies but to pioneer new precision engineering standards across the industry. The Made for Trade name was suitably established in 2005 and the company continued to grow in size under new leadership. The next significant step came in 2016, with the launch of the Korniche brand; a disruptive product line that would go on to change the perception of the fenestration industry and stand behind a range of items with a unique engineering-led focus. So much so in fact that in the years that followed, Made for Trade is often regarded not as a fenestration business, but as a precision engineering company that just happens to be designing and manufacturing fenestration products.

How it’s going: The Homebuilding & Renovating Shows 2023, the Korniche brand fast becoming the product of choice for both homeowners and trades.

The first Korniche product to market was the Aluminium Roof Lantern, which alongside its design set the bar to new heights when it came to ease of installation, graphic instructions, and its ability to reduce the time spent on site for installers. The brand established its presence as a household name for both consumer and trade buyers at the 2016 FIT Show and the Homebuilding and Renovating Show two years later; where live demonstrations wowed onlookers via installations measured in minutes. Designed by the ever-growing engineering team now headed up by Bradley’s brother, Ashley Gaunt - recruited back to the family firm from his role designing motorsport suspension systems in Italy - the second clean-sheet product to be announced under the auspices of the Korniche brand was the Bi-Folding Door. It appeared for the first time at the 2019 FIT Show to a rapturous reception thanks to a number of highly innovative features, plus a price that saw it compete with industry bestsellers. Product number two swiftly became one of the most soughtafter aluminium glazed product in the UK as a result. Production commenced the following year just as the company settled into their new home; a huge 120,000 sq-ft three-factory site in Wynyard that brought most of the core functions of Made for Trade under one roof. From initial quotation to final delivery – something which would soon include glass on the same drop - Made for Trade now served the entire UK market. The next three years saw extensive growth as the family team geared up to meet exceptional demand; whilst a new site in Hartlepool underwent redevelopment ready for the next stage of expansion. Of key importance during this time was gaining enviable ISO 9001 accreditation for quality standards; another landmark in manufacturing for a company in the fenestration industry. The Korniche Flat Glass was suitably unveiled in MFT’s 40th Anniversary year as the third product under the game-changing brand name; again at the ideal time to capitalise on market demand, and the systems are now available to order with deliveries starting in January. THE RESIDENCE COLLECTION COMPLETES MODERN SHROPSHIRE HOME WITH 20 RESIDENCE 7 WINDOWS Premium window and door designer, The Residence Collection, finishes a contemporary Shropshire home with 20 new Residence 7 windows in the Noir colourway. Collaborating with installer, RS Burgess & Sons and fabricator, Stedek Windows and Doors, this architect designed property specified Residence 7 windows in Noir. With a flush external and internal profile, Noir was preferred over black aluminium because of its smooth texture. This choice ensures a contemporary look that compliments the equal sightlines with the architecture designed by ARH Architectural Design. The contrast of the white render and timber cladding against the black windows creates a visual impact. Using the timberweld joint manufacturing method to mimic a traditional timber joint, a combination of side and top hung opening casements with some fixed casements were added to complete the property. REYNAERS OPEN DAY HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF SUSTAINABILITY TO INSTALLERS As 2023 draws to a close, Reynaers Aluminium UK would like to extend its thanks to its valued customers and suppliers. Throughout the year we have continued to develop products that maximise the offering to our customers – delivering optimal performance and ensuring ease of

installation and fabrication. This has been supported by an investment in digital capabilities to support ordering, traceability, and access to information. A highlight of the year was welcoming installers to an open day at our Birmingham headquarters to learn more about product development, installer support packages and

anticipated changes to building regulations. Installers were urged to make sustainability a priority in their offering to homeowners during the open day. With the implementation of the Future Homes Standard due in 2025, Reynaers Technical Director John McComb warned installers and fabricators that as more homeowners make choices with the environment in mind, a commitment to sustainability will become a necessity. While environmental, social, and corporate governance goals have led to high sustainability standards in the commercial sector, the residential sector has largely seen change driven by regulation not customer demand. However, John McComb warned installers it is only a matter of time before sustainability is put under a microscope in the trade and retail sector as homeowners become more invested in making choices with the environment in mind. He said: “There is an assumption that homeowners’ decisions are not driven by sustainability, however that will not last. “This is not a time to be complacent, this

is an opportunity. Make sure you remain at the forefront of your industry and when the demand is there, you will be able to meet it – and prove your own environmental credentials.” “Product credentials are hugely important for architects – and homeowners – looking for a sustainable choice. Make sure this is available to you. Across the industry this is a work in progress, but the information should be there. “At Reynaers we have that information available to installers and fabricators now and have been working to make that as easy as possible to access through digital tools.” Through its sustainability strategy Reynaers Act, the company has pledged to reduce its direct carbon emissions by 46% and indirect carbon emissions by 55% by 2030, as well as to source more low carbon aluminium. Reynaers Aluminium already currently has nine systems certified to Cradle to Cradle standards, accounting for 40% of all turnover. The plan is to certify nine more systems by 2024. Installers at the day were also given an insight into support that is available to

them from Reynaers through its dedicated customer portal, with a new extended package including free access to product images, renders, showroom assets, logos and product brochures. New virtual showroom featuring Reynaers’ premium products Reynaers Aluminium UK has launched a new 360-degree virtual showroom to showcase what can be achieved with the latest aluminium systems, bringing a closeup look at its glazed solutions to customers’ fingertips. While Reynaers has a comprehensive showroom at its Birmingham headquarters, featuring many of its windows, sliding and bi-fold doors, and curtain walling systems, the high quality interactive virtual showroom will make viewing the finished product instantly accessible to fabricators, installers, architects, and homeowners across the country. This latest step in Reynaers’ digitalisation drive takes the customer on a journey through the different products available to gain an insight into how they would look on a completed project – including information points to provide further details about each product and links to online specifications. Samantha Hill, Head of Marketing at

Reynaers Aluminium UK, said: “Visualising the systems in place is important to all clients throughout the supply chain and by introducing this interactive showroom, installers, fabricators and the end customer can get a real taste of how Reynaers’ systems will look in the final project. “Reynaers customers are welcome to visit the showroom here in Birmingham, but we recognise that is not always practical and wanted to make it as easy as possible to visualise these design-led installations in situ.” Under the Reynaers at Home scheme, partners can book time in the central showroom to show clients how systems will look on a completed project – and the 360 virtual showroom aims to bring an added level of convenience to support customers through the scheme. Commercial customers will also have access to a dedicated virtual showroom. Accessible through any online device, the virtual showroom allows visitors to browse a range of products including ConceptPatio 130, HiFinity and MasterPatio sliding doors; the ConceptFolding 68 bifold door; MasterLine, SlimLine 68 and SlimLine 38 windows; and ConceptWall 50 and ConceptWall 65 curtain walling. SHEERLINE’S BEN HARTSHORN NAMED RISING STAR OF THE YEAR AT G23 AWARDS Sheerline’s Ben Hartshorn was named the fenestration industry’s newest Rising Star after winning the coveted award at the G23 Awards at the end of November. It was one of the most competitive award categories, with Ben up against seven other entrants for the accolade. He was put forward by the team due to the exceptional and busy year Ben’s had, and how he has risen to the challenges and opportunities this has given him. In a relatively short space of time, Ben has progressed from assisting in designing and testing prototypes in the early stages of the product cycle, to leading product development from the ground up, as well as managing one of Sheerline’s key customer facing departments. Although Ben was new to the fenestration industry when he joined Sheerline in 2019, he took the skills he gained during his apprenticeship and his previous experience as a tool maker and applied them to live projects. Not only did this help him hit the ground running, but it was also beneficial to the R&D team and business as a whole. Products Ben has worked on include the recently launched Classic Heritage Door, which was previewed at the FIT Show 2023 in May. It is expected to become one of Sheerline’s most popular products with both installers and fabricators. It offers authentic heritage features with its lockbox design, making it ideal for period renovations and modern properties that can benefit from classically styled doors. Ben also played a pivotal role in the development of several other Sheerline innovations, most recently Prestige’s reverse butt joint solution which is just being launched. Alongside Ben’s product development work, he has become increasingly involved in ensuring Sheerline’s fabrication tooling and support is market leading, building on his past experience in this area. Sheerline prides itself on recognising when team members go above and beyond, which is reflected in the fact that Ben was recently promoted to Technical Support Manager. This role requires him to oversee a team of national technical sales engineers committed to providing unrivalled support. When speaking to Ben’s colleagues, two attributes that they particularly appreciate are the fresh perspective he offers, alongside a willingness to see the bigger picture, ensuring projects are delivered in a pragmatic way, that work for Sheerline customers.

Ben said of his award win: “Winning this accolade at the start of my career within the fenestration industry reflects Sheerline’s commitment to training and the apprenticeship process. Over the past four years, Sheerline has given me an opportunity to gain a vast amount of knowledge and build contacts within the industry.” “From a technical and design perspective, it’s great to be part of such an innovative team as this has enabled me to get involved with a variety of interesting projects. I’d like to thank the team at Sheerline for putting me forward for this award and the opportunities they’ve given me so far. I look forward to the future,” he added. THE VIEW OF 2023 FROM VBH Gary Gleeson, Marketing Manager at the hardware specialist, VBH, gives us a review of 2023 from the VBH perspective. Everyone in our industry, indeed in most industries, knew that 2023 was going to be tough. At VBH, as we came off the back of a record-breaking year in 2022, we knew that we had a huge task on our hands to come even remotely close to the heights of the previous year. Happily, though, as I write this in early December, 2023 has actually turned out to be a pretty good year for VBH. We have successfully consolidated our position from 2022, with sales figures still well up. We picked up many new customers in 2023, and, on the whole, our existing customers proved to be very busy, too, converting much new business themselves. These new and busy existing customers, with the added benefit of a LOT of new products in 2023, allowing to sell more into all our customers, has stood us in very good stead. I have listed a few highlights of our new product launches below, but there were many more. The greenteQ Velocity door hinge for PVCu entrance doors has really found a large fan base amongst manufacturers and installers, as it is so quick to fit in the factory and adjust on site if necessary. The hinge is available in ten finishes and has been tested to PAS24. On the other side of the door, our greenteQ Q-Bolt multi-point door lock is now securing residoors up and down the land. Although only available in one colour (silver), Q-Bolt also brings the benefit of PAS24 performance. Take up of our greenteQ iQ door lock, Q-Bolt’s clever cousin, has really stepped up as the year has gone on. greenteQ iQ locks can be linked to a smart home network via a Kubu home hub. The user can then set up various alerts including checks on the open/closed/locked status of their doors, or even create weather alerts to warn of incoming bad weather. All doors and windows can be linked to other items in the network, too. So for example, the heating could be set to switch off if a window is opened. Did you pick up on the mention of greenteQ iQ on “windows” just now? Yes? Good, because there is also a greenteQ iQ security window espagnolette that links via Kubu in the same way as the door lock. This will tell if a window is open/closed/locked or in night vent. greenteQ iQ and Kubu is a winning combination. Very ‘winning’, in fact, as the window lock won VBH the Best Window Component category at the recent National Fenestration Awards, and our partner, Kubu, won the ‘Best Door Component’ for their smart sensor technology. At the Medway Business Awards in November, VBH was awarded the Product Innovation prize for our work with smart products, including the greenteQ iQ window and door lock range, and our Q-Smart electronic fingerprint/app door handle.

At the G-Awards in November, Kubu won ‘New Product of the Year’, again with their sensor technology. All of these awards are a reflection of how well greenteQ iQ products that work with Kubu have really taken off this year, to the benefit of everyone in the supply chain. There is more to come from the iQ stable next year, and a whole host of other greenteQ products, too, so we are hopeful that 2024 to carry on where ‘23 left off, although we will not be counting any chickens. It’s not all about great products. We have made changes to our processes and made new appointments to help secure and retain new business, and to ensure that we continue to offer our customers the top-level customer service that they all need. We have reduced the responsibilities of the Customer Service team to give them more time to process their customers’ orders and deal with incoming queries quickly and efficiently. We have strengthened our internal sales department, to take away the ‘sales’ function’ from Customer Services.

We also encourage customers to use our VBH24 online shop. Orders received through VBH24 need minimal handling by our team, so hit the warehouse almost immediately. Our new improved VBH24 Customer Portal has been long in the development but this should go live very early in 2024 to make ordering from VBH even easier. We have further strengthened both our Technical and Marketing teams with the additions of Callum Norris and Ben Shephard. These new appointments allow us to provide even better pre and after-sale support to our customers. Our purchasing team continues to work hard to ensure that stock is available for our customers when they want it. We have exceeded a 98% On Time in Full delivery figure for seven months on the bounce since May. All of the points we have covered above, new product development, product innovation, choosing the right partners, developing really good, award winning, products, effective processes, and a dynamic team have combined to make 2023 a success for VBH. All of these points also add up to a sum that should help to convince current customers and potential customers that VBH is the hardware company that they can trust to get things right, and that VBH is the company that they should be partnering with for their hardware. 2023 in one sentence? It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been good, and we look forward to more of the same (maybe a bit easier!) in 2024. Thank you to all our customers and partners. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you all. To contact VBH, call them on 01634 263263, email at sales@vbhgb.com, or send them a Tweet @vbhgb.

PRODUCT INNOVATION IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS AT VBH

Hardware manufacturer, VBH, has been successful at the Medway Business Awards, winning the Product Innovation category during the ceremony held at The Great Hall, Priestfield, on Friday 17th November.

October.

The award was given for VBH’s work with their greenteQ ‘smart’ products, initially with the Q-Smart fingerprint/app operated door handle, and with the more recent development of the greenteQ iQ range of security window locks and multipoint door locks.

Gary Gleeson, Marketing Manager there, says, “Installers who offer the greenteQ iQ/ Kubu concept are reaping the rewards of homeowners’ hearty appetite for upgrading their new installation from the ordinary to the extra-ordinary. If greenteQ iQ locks are fitted to windows and doors as standard, it is a very simple and inexpensive process to link them to a smart network at any time if the customer wishes.

On their visit to VBH House in September, the judges were impressed by how greenteQ iQ locks can be quickly upgraded by the simple addition of a sensor to work with Kubu to link windows and entrance doors to a smart home network. Benefits to the end user include a quick check on the open/closed and locked/unlocked statuses of windows and doors via the Kubu app, security and comfort alerts etc. Products fitted with greenteQ iQ locks can also be linked to other elements of the network, such as heating, lighting etc. The Medway award comes hot on the heels of the greenteQ iQ security window lock receiving the Best Window Component award at the National Fenestration Awards in

VBH reports that both the window and door variants of greenteQ iQ are selling well.

“VBH has been very successful in recent years, and one of the keys to that success is the constant stream of new innovations that we are bringing to market, including our new ‘smart’ products.” VBH directors Simon Monks and Vince Kay led a merry band of VBH revellers on the night, and a great time was had by all. To find out more about greenteQ iQ window and door locks, or any other hardware in the VBH range, contact the company on 01634 263263, email at sales@vbhgb.com, or send them a Tweet @vbhgb.

EUROCELL’S LOGIK WINDOW SYSTEM PROVIDES STYLISH AND ENERGY-EFFICIENT SOLUTION AT NEW BUILD DEVELOPMENT IN KENT One of Eurocell’s most energy-efficient window solutions has been used as part of an award-winning large-scale residential development in Rainham, Kent. Long-term fabrication and installation partner A&B Glass, included the marketleading Logik PVC-U window system as an alternative to aluminium frames, to meet developer and homeowner demand at the Beaulieu Park housing scheme. Eurocell worked with A&B Glass, based in Sudbury, to manage the specification and supply of Logik for 90 plots covering a combination of new build residential homes and private apartments. Each stunning new home at Beaulieu Park benefits from the attractive finish Logik offers, in addition to its outstanding technical performance which includes low U-values and A++ rated energy efficiency. Work at Beaulieu Park took 18 months to complete. The development has since won the ‘Residential Super Major’ category at the Medway Housing Awards, where the judges complimented how the development has been moulded to create a strong sense of character and is confident in its design. A&B Glass has long standing experience supplying the new build market and an understanding of the balance that needs to be achieved between appearance and product effectiveness. Having manufactured and installed Logik across a wide number of new build developments throughout the UK, it is clear the system is answering the needs of the new build sector from both perspectives. Martin Benn, Head of New Build at Eurocell, comments: “Our partnership with A&B Glass on this prestigious new build development

in Rainham sees the project, and future homeowners and residents, benefit from what Logik has to offer. This includes its unrivalled range of colour options, which support design ambitions, cost-effective, long-term performance, and strong sustainability credentials offered by all our profiles.” David Miller, New Build Sales Manager for A&B Glass, commented: “After reviewing the specification required for the window solution for this project, Eurocell’s Logik system was the ideal answer. The developer, McCullough Homes, alongside its architects, were seeking a modern and contemporary window aesthetic to complement the overall development design. So, the specification of more than 90 Logik frames in a highly appealing grey finish provides superb visual appeal across the whole project.” David Miller continues: “It is fantastic to have Eurocell’s technical expertise on hand should we need it. We have developed a close and mutually beneficial working relationship that has lasted over two decades, and both our companies understand the demands and issues housebuilders have when it comes to the new build market. “Logik is a highly specified window solution because it is proven to not only look good after installation, but it also ensures high performance for many years. It is fit for purpose, looks stylish, delivers strong thermal performance, and provides the finish the clients actively seek.” If you have any questions or would like more information then please email newbuild@ eurocell.co.uk or call 0870 120 3003.

WINKHAUS LABORATORIES SUPPORTING YOUR TRANSITION TO PAS24:2022

The new version of PAS24 was released in 2022 with a two year transition period set to update existing test data to the new standard, a period that ends in September 2024. Winkhaus laboratories were the first to be audited and granted approval to provide testing to the new standard by UKAS. In the period since, the laboratory team have been busy supporting customers transition to the new standard, but the team offer far more than just testing. Winkhaus recently hosted the Secured by Design Development Officers, with the laboratory team sharing all the changes made in the latest iteration of the standard and why these changes have been made. Alfie Hosker Secured by Design Technical Manager “It was great to see first-hand Winkhaus’ UKAS accredited PAS24:2022 test laboratory, which is possibly one of the first to achieve this in the UK. The transition period to meet the requirements of the new standard completes by the end of September 2024 and it was very encouraging to hear

how many customers of Winkhaus have already completed or are in the process of transitioning to the revised standard. We (SBD), have been and are currently sending out reminder correspondence (Since the beginning of October 2022) to our Door and Window members, every three months to communicate this requirement to them, and that this is the latest date they must transition across by, for their products to remain listed on SBD webpage and continue to meet the Police Preferred Specification. I am grateful to Ade and Ross at Winkhaus Laboratories, for their time to demonstrate and explain the changes to our team of development officers.” Ade Collins, Winkhaus UK Laboratory Manager, comments, “When a standard changes it’s not just about test everything again from scratch as you would for a new development, customers already have a bank of evidence for their existing product ranges which can be used to support the transition.

Reviewing the existing data and identifying the gaps allows us to create bespoke testing programs to build the evidence required for accreditation, saving both time and money for the customer.” Consultation with customers is one of the added value services the Winkhaus Laboratory team provides to aid in guaranteeing our customers success. With over 40 years combined experience in testing, development, industry and product knowledge, the team are perfectly placed to advise customers on their testing programs. One of these added services are the technical development days.

approved test house. Winkhaus Laboratories are a UKAS accredited test facility established to support our partners innovation and accreditation of products. The Laboratory is also a member of the British Measurement and Testing Association. Established for over 25 years, Winkhaus Laboratories offer a full range of services including: full product assessment/ accreditation, part assessment and partner development assessment, including consultation. Winkhaus Laboratories have extensive facilities for carrying out security, durability

Ade Collins said, “Testing traditionally provides one outcome for customers a pass or fail result, which if negative can set back development programs especially if this leads to product re-design.” Winkhaus Laboratories offer development days to partners who would like to commission new products, improve their current products or test to new standards. During a development day, the team offer guidance and consult on the likelihood of testing, identifying any vulnerable or failure points prior to official testing. Ade Collins said, “These days can often save significant time in the development cycle prior to testing, allowing for the iteration of a design without the full cost and time sometimes associated with testing, and provide confidence prior to embarking on a full test program.” All windows and doors that require accreditation must be assessed to the relevant specified standard(s) by a UKAS

and weather testing on doors and windows. Test services offered include: • PAS24: Enhanced Security Performance • BS6375 (part 1, 2 and 3): Performance of Doors and Windows • BS EN1634-3: Smoke Control Test • TS007: Enhanced Security Performance For further information on the services we provide or to discuss your testing requirements, please contact us directly via +44 (0)1536 316006, email test.lab@ winkhaus.co.uk or visit https://www. winkhaus.co.uk/en/winkhaus-laboratories

ELUMATEC’S ROLE IN THE FENESTRATION ECO-SYSTEM

At the start of this year, I wrote an article that, in summary, said our purpose was not to sell machinery but to meet our customers’ needs. The distinction might appear subtle – elumatec UK is a machinery supplier – but it’s important. What’s more, I believe it’s one of the reasons we were voted Machinery Company of the Year in the 2023 NFA awards. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who voted for us. We were thrilled to win, and your support confirms that even though this business can be challenging, our expertise, effort and commitment are both recognised and valued. Across all sectors, too many organisations are solely concerned with short-term targets. The focus is on the quickest possible return on investment, a headline output statistic or smashing last month’s sales figures. But fenestration is one of those industries that’s very susceptible to conditions within the wider economy. Periods of growing sales are often followed by others where volumes decline. Steering a steady ship through the turbulent waters isn’t easy, but it’s made more difficult if the focus is on a quick win. I believe we need to have a blend of optimism and realism. We need to keep our eyes fixed on the long-term goal while being fully aware that conditions, right now, may not be ideal. That’s what we do, and it works. elumatec, as a business, is firmly grounded in the real world. I, for one, have never shied away from talking about the challenges that fabricators face – whether it’s the struggle to find and retain talent or the drive towards sustainability, the need to embrace advanced technologies or the threats that scammers can pose. I enjoy discussing key issues with existing and potential customers,

because even though we are a machinery supplier, any piece of kit, however sophisticated, is part of an organisation’s eco-system. It doesn’t just have to work. It has to be the right fit for that environment. The in-depth discussions we have with potential machinery buyers are all about looking at the ecosystem. We need to know whether the customer’s focus is aluminium, steel or PVCu, and which of their markets may be growing or shrinking. We need to know whether their work is largely bespoke or regular and repeated orders. We need to know if they collaborate with third parties on design, how their management information is collected and whether they are ready to embrace the benefits of a connected and AI-fuelled future. And yes, sometimes these conversations reveal that all the customer needs is a chat. Or, perhaps, a quick service visit from one of our engineers. So, yes, we are a machinery supplier, and our machinery is, we believe world-class, but we are also active participants in this sector. We educate, we help, we train, we support. We equip those seeking to boost productivity and those wanting to enhance their skills, and whether we’re supplying something tangible like a new saw blade - or offering the reassurance of expert advice, we aim to deliver complete satisfaction. 2023 has been a good year for elumatec. We’ve launched new products. We’ve secured new customers and we’ve implemented all our planned investments. To have crowned the year with the industry’s premier endorsement is the icing on the top of the cake. Thank you for your vote. You like what we’re doing. We plan to keep on doing it.

ELUMATEC AND EMMEGI SET TO JOIN FORCES IN UK

elumatec (UK) and emmegi (UK) have announced plans for a formal collaboration in the UK market, designed to help both businesses deliver an even better service to customers. The move is part of the ‘One Company’ approach being implemented by the Voilàp Group, which owns both elumatec and emmegi, as well as other well-known brands such as Tekna, Someco and Keraglass. ‘One Company’ is all about making the most of the synergies that exist in the individual Voilàp Group businesses, enhancing their inherent strengths and promoting individual talent. It is focused on excellence and growth – excellence in processes and service, and achieving growth by supporting customers to grow. The Group’s organisational model is one of the reasons why it is able to design highly innovative products and compatible software which distinguish Voilàp in the market for excellence. Being able to draw on complementary talents, skills and knowledge helps it to serve customers with a portfolio of products and services that meet all their needs. In the UK, elumatec and emmegi will

continue to operate alongside one another but with a shared vision and shared access to the other Voilàp brands. In a joint statement Ian Latimer, Managing Director of emmegi and Neil Parton, Managing Director of elumatec, said: “This is an exciting new chapter for both our businesses and has been warmly welcomed by staff. We are still finalising our new operational structure, but we will certainly be working more closely together in the future, identifying new shared opportunities in the UK and Ireland and growing our combined market share. “The benefits to customers will come in the form of better access to a broader range of machines and software, more servicing and maintenance resources, and more investment in process efficiencies. “Our customers will continue to deal with their current emmegi or elumatec contacts, and can contact either of us directly for more information.” More info at: https://www.emmegi.com/en/ home and https://www.elumatec.com/en/ home

BUILDING OUR SKILLS LAUNCHES ‘CAREER FAMILIES’ AS PART OF BESPOKE INDUSTRY CAREERS FAIRS Fenestration, Glass and Glazing – 50 Careers in one day Having announced its intention to launch a series of bespoke industry careers fairs in 2024, Building Our Skills - Making Fenestration, Glass and Glazing a Career of Choice has now formally launched its ‘Career Families’ to help students understand the many career options open to them as they get closer to the world of work. The nine ‘families’ together encompass over 100 individual roles, demonstrating career progression opportunities, training, qualifications and how students can start out on their career journeys in the industry.

For teachers, parents and students who want more information about the ‘families’ and the roles they include, simply email sayhello@buildingourskills. co.uk and ask for details. The Career Families will be showcased in person at pilot events to be held in March 2024 as a part of National Careers Week. The first will be in South Yorkshire at the Oakwell Stadium, home of Barnsley FC, and the second in Manchester at the Etihad Stadium, home of Manchester City Football Club. Building Our Skills is working in conjunction with the education bodies in South Yorkshire and Greater Manchester to bring these events to fruition. Speaking about the events, Mark Handley, Building Our Skills’ Partnerships Manager said: “Our aim is to show the industry to over 1,000 school children and their teachers over the course of the two events. If the two pilots are successful, these will become annual events enabling us to keep in touch with those who attend as they get closer to thinking about their careers. It is also our intention to expand the number of events into other areas of the country where we are already working with other local education authorities, but of course, the launch of the Careers Families is an important step on the road to show students the opportunities that are available to them.”

Employers seeking advice on any aspect of qualifications-writing or wanting to find out about GQA’s network of approved training centre are welcome to get in touch. We can assist with an online assessment test through our GQA Online system. This system utilises a question bank to draw random questions, evaluate learners, and promptly grade assessments within a minute. Our accredited training programs come with the issuance of a plastic or digital GQA Skills Card. This card acts as a verifiable record of competence that can be produced on demand.
