Your moment in the sun

pecsavers Ópticas’ style team is on hand to help shoppers choose the perfect pair of sunglasses from this season’s collections before they hit the beach this August. Specsavers glasses stylist Bianca Swan says: ‘With summer in full swing, now is the perfect time to invest in a chic pair of sunnies and rock this season’s look.’ Here, Bianca shares her top three sunglasses trends for the summer.

Cat eye

‘A perennial favourite, cat eyes have been adding a touch of Hollywood glamour to summer wardrobes since the 1950s,’ says Bianca. ‘They also tap into the wider nineties trend that shows no sign of tiring. Style icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Winona Ryder were often spotted rocking their vintage sunnies on Sunset Boulevard.’

Pilot-style

‘Another classic style staple since the 1950s, they typically have a double bridge bar and are oversized in appearance. They have the benefit of working with the majority of face shapes and coming in a variety of styles with coloured or reflective lenses they’re the perfect accessory to inject some colour into your summer wardrobe.’

Geometric

‘Looking for something a little bolder?’ says Bianca, ‘Unleash your inner Elton and try a pair of these statement styles.’ With a nod to the popular designs of the 1970s and 1980s, stand out from the crowd with a pair of oversized, chunky acetate frames or these hexagon-inspired sunnies with a bold brow line.

any of you will have heard of the TIE card (Tarjeta de Identidad de extranjero), whilst many of you won't have. Therefore I thought I would try and explain the importance of this new Residencia card.

Firstly, between now and the end of the transition period, the withdrawal agreement has cemented a number of points, including continued rights to healthcare and increases to the UK state pension, both of which remain unchanged for individuals who are legally resident here at the end of the transition period. Only 360,000 British nationals are currently registered in Spain, with a vast number in the process of obtaining Residencia. But I am not quite sure what will happen to those who do not choose to take official residency here in Spain after the end of year. For those of you who are already Resident, and have the green document or card, you need at this time to do nothing as these are acceptable documents and you are not required to change to a TIE at the moment. If you intend to remain living in Spain after December 31st, you will need to apply for the TIE card and before you can do that, you must be in possession of either private health insurance, paying into the Spanish health system or be a pensioner. To obtain your TIE, you can do this yourself but you must get an appointment, which I understand is in Alicante at the moment. However the process can be started online and if you have no health insurance, you must obtain this first and be in possession of a certificate, which the Police will require, and this is where my company can help you. You will need to ensure that the policy covers the full requirements for your application and the health insurance company we deal with, can provide the full cover that is necessary. There is no point in taking out cheap insurance, and expecting this to provide you with ongoing expensive treatment, because it will not. I understand there is no requirement to have a minimum cash amount in your bank account but you will need a minimum monthly income, and hopefully they will also consider the overall wealth of individuals. ¡ For further information or a quotation, please contact one of my offices, email info@jennifercunningham.net or visit our website www.jennifercunningham.net

Darling daughter is now working in the office with us so any mistakes in this month's magazine I am putting down to her. It is such a joy to have all the family working together.... honest! Apparently all our systems which have tried and tested over the last 27 years are wrong and if she uses another highlighter she will have 'rainbowed' every bit of paper in the office.... I was hoping for some new input and fresh eyes but...... I may be reporting next month that we have a job vacancy in the office..... Next month hopefully the clubs and groups that have been on hold will be able to start meeting up again in some way, so please let us know what your group / charity / society is doing in order to be included in the noticeboard which will be back in the magazine. More now than ever we may not agree with some people's views and theories but please, let's all try to be kind to each other. Congratulations to Dawn Nicholls from Lorcha who won the competition last month, by spotting the logo on page 31. This month if you find the Curry on Cooking logo (not on this page, front page or the recipe page) you are in with a chance of winning a selection of curry kits which will be posted out to your house. Simply email editor@femalefocusonline.com with your name, address, phone number and the page you found the logo on. See inside Lesley for full competition details. Good luck. Sit down with a twisted thriller concerning a dying wish, and delve into a guide to current politics… By Ella Walker, PA

5 NEW BOOKS

TO READ

Fiction

1. The Weekend by Charlotte Wood is published in hardback by W&N. This visceral, arresting portrayal of friendship and grief sees three women in their 70s convene at their late friend Sylvie’s beach house, to clear it out and say goodbye. Severe, tightly wound Jude; ever the optimist Adele, and intelligent Wendy with her decrepit dog Finn, have known one another decades, and while those years contain a lot of love, their relationships have become fractious, complicated by secrets, regrets and exasperation. The frequent descriptions of the incontinent Finn are nauseating, but it’s indicative of Charlotte Wood’s incredible ability to induce an actual physical response in the reader. You cringe alongside Jude at Adele’s lack of selfawareness; you feel the prick of tears as Wendy feigns poise in the face of Jude’s thoughtlessness and unkindness. Wood tackles age sharply and movingly, and makes you consider the darker aspects of your own friendships. 8/10 (Review by Ella Walker) Photo credit: W&N/PA 2. The Last Wife by Karen Hamilton is published in hardback by Wildfire. Two women, a dying wish and a web of lies – Karen Hamilton is back with her latest twisted thriller. When Marie’s best friend Nina dies, Marie begins to slowly fill the gap left behind, not realising Nina had her own explosive secrets. Fans of The Perfect Girlfriend will love Hamilton’s latest, and the Last Wife is an utterly compelling, addictive read. Marie makes the ultimate unreliable narrator, and Hamilton is a skilled writer who makes you invest in the most unlikeable of characters. It is the kind of book you finish in one sitting, with enough twists to keep you guessing until the final page. 8/10 (Review by Megan Baynes) Photo credit: Wildfire/PA 3. The Half Sister by Sandie Jones is published in paperback by Pan. A knock at the door during a normal Sunday lunch changes everything for sisters Kate and Lauren. On the other side of the door is their half sister, Jess, looking for answers about the family she never knew. Told through dual narratives, this book is a compelling read and has a lot of potential. However, it is let down by the slow pacing during the first half, which sees the story get bogged down in a lot of unnecessary details and sub-plots that don’t add much to the main narrative. Things pick up in the second half, as it races towards the somewhat inevitable conclusion. The end comes too soon, and there has not been enough back story to make it feel believable or satisfying. The Half Sister is a domestic suspense thriller, but perhaps could be better described as a light family drama, as it lacks the heartracing hook of a thriller. 6/10 (Review by Megan Baynes) Photo credit: Walker Books/PA

Non-fiction

4. The Art of Political Storytelling by Philip Seargeant is published in hardback by Bloomsbury Academic. Subtitled ‘Why Stories Win Votes in Post-Truth Politics’, this book by a language and communicate expert tries to explain one of the great quandaries of our age: why reason and logic fail to win out over emotion and ‘truthiness’ in political discourse. The answer, argues Seargeant, is stories. Successful recent political initiatives, such as the election of Donald Trump and the winning Brexit vote, packaged their causes as powerfully simple but highly adaptable narratives that plug into age-old templates and carry further into the electorate’s consciousness than careful argument or detailed analysis of the facts on the ground. No doubt it was ever thus, to some extent, but this survey of the toolbox of the political storyteller – from deep structure to rhetorical style to the mainstreaming of conspiracy theories, with a nod to key story theorists like Aristotle, Syd Field and Joseph Campbell – goes a long way to account for the recent successes of provocative populist leaders around the world. Interesting and readable, this is an enlightening guide to our current political moment. 7/10 (Review by Dan Brotzel) Photo credit: Pan/PA

Children’s book

5. Wonderscape by Jennifer Bell is published in paperback by Walker Books. Jennifer Bell, author of the international bestseller The Uncommoners: The Crooked Sixpence, has worked her magic again with this fantastic sci-fi offering. It starts with a bang: while on their way to school, Arthur, Cecily and Ren are accidentally sucked through a portal into an in-reality adventure game called Wonderscape, which exists in the year 2473. The game, and the future, offer plenty of opportunities for otherworldliness, which Bell takes full advantage of. What makes this book stand out is its casual references to scientific concepts such as nanotechnology and cryptocurrency, as well as its celebration of humanity’s heroes, including Newton, Edison and Wangari Maathai, who are cast as characters in the game. Bell does this with such finesse that the story never feels like a history or science lesson in disguise. If those references land with young minds, and readers want to discover more, they can do so in their own time; there’s no pressure to understand them in order to enjoy the story. All in, this is a fun-filled, character-driven, fast-paced, vibrant story – but together with its thought-provoking, science-embracing and heroreferencing narrative, it will almost certainly win both hearts and minds. 9/10 (Review by Nicole Whitton) Photo credit: Bloomsbury Academic/PA

Financial Planning

Female Focus Magazine August 2020

Ongoing Servicing & Contact

F

inancial planning should always be undertaken using a holistic approach to cover all eventualities. There are so many areas to consider, ranging from goals and objectives to tax efficiencies of the available products and solutions. Each and every one of us have different circumstances so advice should be tailored accordingly.

In actual fact, there are 6 main steps in the financial planning process which are as follows; 1) Establish and define the client and personal financial planner relationship. 2) Gather client data and determine goals and objectives. 3) Analyse and evaluate the client's financial status. 4) Develop and present the financial plan. 5) Implement the financial planning recommendations. 6) Monitor the financial plan and the financial planning relationship. Every advisory firm will go through the first 4 steps – they have to for compliance purposes. The 5th step is subject to client approval and wanting to go ahead with the adviser's recommendations, which then leaves the 6th step – the ongoing monitoring of the investment AND communication with clients. The ongoing servicing of investments and maintaining client relationships are two of our USPs which we pride our business on. This year alone has clearly demonstrated the importance of regularly keeping clients updated which is perhaps one of the main reasons why we have seen a significant rise in the number of people contacting us for a second opinion. We know from experience that not all individuals receive this service and some have joined us having previously felt neglected and undervalued as clients. This is always disappointing to hear as a reflection on our industry, but particularly so in a year like this with heightened levels of uncertainty and worry. As a family run business, we never underestimate the value of support through the bad times as well as the good. Building relationships with our clients that can stand the test of time has always been our priority, but this can only ever be achieved with continued contact and support. If you have any questions about your investments, why not get in touch with us? · Logic Financial Consultants are fully regulated & licensed financial advisers, covering the Costa Blanca, Murcia and Canary Islands. AMATA opens a Virtual Craft Village

Amata, the craft association that has already organised so many Arts & Crafts markets all over Spain, has used the lockdown of the last months to look for a way to help the artisans that are badly affected by the cancelling of all craft and medieval markets. During the many weeks of confinement they had ample time to make more stock and explore new designs and techniques, but there were no markets to sell. Amata fairs are well known, because the participants are only allowed to sell their own work, and most of them are at work in their stalls. This is very difficult to transmit in a normal shop online. So, they thought of creating a Virtual Village, where all residents are real craft people and artists, who invite you into their workshops to share with you the love they have for their crafts. They have made videos to show you the different techniques, tools and materials they use in creating their work. You can go to their shops, follow a craft class or visit the gallery and the tourist office. It is a complete village with many delightful corners. The artisans invite everybody to come and watch them in https://www.puebloartesano.es - for the time being it is mainly aimed at Spanish speaking public, but all foreign "tourists" are very welcome, most of the information is also available in English. And if you have difficulty with the language, or you have any special questions, there is a post office in the village, where you can send your mails to Amata - they understand Spanish, English, French, German and Dutch and can attend you in those languages. If you like the village, please pass the link on to your friends and contacts and when you come back for another visit, you will certainly find more shops and workshops, because this is only the very beginning of the village.

Elements Beauty Spa is back, bigger and better than ever, and now in our 11th year of trading. After devastating flooding in January, the salon had to close for complete refurbishment. The coronavirus quarantine period was used to extend the works planned to create a space that now qualifies as a medical spa with regard to hygiene conditions. Porous surfaces have been removed so all areas are germ free and all tools used during treatments are sterilised in a medical grade autoclave and individually packaged for each customer. All our staff have undergone specialist COVID-19 hygiene training and appointments are staggered to ensure proper social distancing can be maintained at all times. All required PPE measures have been put in place and appointments are only available when booked in advance. Despite all these measures, we have still managed to maintain the pampering, serene environment that we are famous for. Our new pedicure zone includes a meditation station where you can use the headphones to listen to guided meditations, or your own favourite music. It is fitted with specialised jets for rinsing away the scrubs and masks used during the pedicure treatments. We have one of the largest selections of CND shellac polishes in Spain, and also Jessica polishes for those who prefer the non-gel option. Our treatment rooms are peaceful, tranquil areas where you can fully unwind whilst enjoying one of our specialised facials or holistic treatments. We also have a dedicated medical tattooing space to offer our Microblading, Permanent Makeup, Tattoo Removal and Fillers. This zone is not used for any other treatments to avoid any cross contamination and is separate from the main salon so extremely high hygiene levels can be maintained. We are open for business and look forward to welcoming back customers old and new. Find us at: Carrer Mabra 3, Las Marinas Km 1, Denia 03700. Anti-aging surgery for men? … Yes, it’s another “New Normal”!

More men than ever before are improving their looks and shedding the years.

Loose muscle mass and slack skin are inevitable as we get older. And men are following the ladies in wanting to do something about it. Accounting for around 10% of cosmetic surgery procedures carried out in the UK today, men are increasingly realising that ears that stick out, love handles, jowls, blotches, or lines that weren’t there before can be sorted ‘with a little help’. Eyelid Surgery Especially popular with men in middle age, Blepharoplasty is an operation to get rid of droopy eyelids or any ‘under eye baggage’ you might be carrying. Why? The eyes are the windows to the soul, and a fresh pair of curtains can knock years off. How? Small incisions are made in the natural folds of the eyelids to remove excess skin and fatty tissue that cause hooded eyes or eye bags. Ear Pinning With 1 in 20 Brits convinced their ears stick out too much, Otoplasty has become one of the most popular procedures with men. Why? Some people simply aren’t happy with the shape of their ears, other may have suffered an injury or have played rugby! How? A relatively simple operation, it involves a re-sculpting of the cartilage at the back of the ear allowing the ear to adopt a more regular position. Facelift Over the years we have covered many times how a facial nip and tuck can vastly improve appearance, help a person to look younger and less tired, and boost confidence. Why? For some people looking in the mirror is an unpleasant experience. Maybe they consider their looks have gone, or all they see are the imperfections. How? A mini-facelift operation takes around 2 hours. The procedure lifts the area of the cheeks and facial skin upwards to produce a firmer look to the face and remove sagging jowls. In men, because of receding hair or less hair to start with, the incisions could be visible, so they have to be cleverly done. These are 3 examples of procedures that more and more men are asking for. Other procedures like a Nose Job, or Liposuction are being requested too. If there is anything about your appearance that bothers you, then feel free to call into our clinic and find out more. The first consultative visit is completely free. Dr Ignacio Poole is a specialist Surgeon with a Master in Aesthetic Surgery and a certified family doctor / GP. · Clinica El Arenal, Av Arenal 2, Jávea. PLEASE NOTE OUR NEW PHONE NUMBER 966 166 733. Walk Your Way Well

Female Focus Magazine August 2020

by Niamh O'Sheehan

acebook can be an effective and fun tool to keep us in touch with family and friends. We can use our profile pages to share photos of our happiest moments and proudest achievements. We can write creative or informative posts that are heartfelt and this encourages others to do the same. In short, with our choice of content, we have the opportunity to promote positivity.

Unfortunately, there is the negative side to social media. If a person isn’t inclined to endorse positivity in their “real life” then chances are that their Facebook platform will offer them the capacity to further infiltrate their social circle with negative behaviours or views. Some days you need to don your armour before going online to ensure self preservation from these particular type of characters. The promotion and sharing of fake or inaccurate news can go viral and cause unrest and distress. The bickering and squabbling on community group forums can sometimes entertain us but can quite often become personal and downright offensive. The risk of thoughtless or pointed comments on your own profile page can feel like a violation of your personal space and your belief system. It is vital to attempt to differentiate between trolls who habitually attempt to stir things up and genuine participants in a discussion who enjoy healthy and constructive debate. Unfortunately, that line is blurry when you are missing vocal nuances. The misinterpretation of tone can lead to all kinds of discord. I think we can safely agree that Facebook (and other social media platforms) more often than not mirrors societal mood. Currently, with the sadness, confusion, uncertainly and stress that we experiencing due to the COVID-19 global pandemic you can probably find your newsfeed overloaded with all things virus related: todays statistics, the mask debate, the real/ fake medical developments, the event cancellations, the political oneupmanship, the pros/ cons of “getting on with normal life”. This list is endless and many people will agree that Corona Virus fatigue is currently hitting us hard. Some of us spend a significant amount of time aimlessly scrolling through our Facebook feed sieving through the speculation. It’s a hot topic in the cyber-psychology world that the current online climate is leading to an increase in depression, anxiety and unhealthy sleep patterns. The addictive nature of Facebook with its clever algorithms, our constant hunger for LIKES and the growing FOMO phenomenon (Fear of Missing Out) keeps us hooked, when quite frankly, we should be doing something much more constructive like, for example, WALKING!

You knew I’d find a way to rope in my favourite activity didn’t you! We all know the answer to reducing our device time and that is the simplest solution of all. Switch it off! This of course is somewhat contradictory to previous advice I have offered in my monthly musings when I have suggested we use our phone as a step tracker, a GPS system or calorie burn counter. So, what’s the solution? Seems we need to work on our self control. So, I propose that, as part of our walking attire, we strap on a funky bum-bag and bury our mobile phones deep within so we have an easier time forgetting we are carrying it. But, what happens when along our walking route we see a glorious view, a quirky building or a miracle of nature that cries out to be photographed? Again, we need to practice discipline. View the phone as simply a camera and try to ignore the fact that there are countless WhatsApp, Facebook and twitter notifications awaiting our acknowledgment. We can be rest assured, anything that’s worth viewing online will still be there when we get home and have put our feet up after a long trek. This is all absolutely easier said than done and I’m the first person who needs to practice what they preach. There is no question that my screen time is excessive and my control of said monkey is a work in progress. But one thing I have found is that walking always offers me a clearer frame of mind. And with a fresher mind I am able to deduce what social media content is worth absorbing and what is not worth my precious energy. A brisk walk releases endorphins that leads to improved emotional health and a decrease in anxiety. Walking also increases our level of norepinephrine which positively boosts our mood. Equipped with a healthier mind we are in a stronger position to filter out the negativity that we are bombarded with on social media. Think of it as building your immune system against the “digital” COVID-19 virus. So, just as we promise ourselves to dedicate MORE time to our physical and emotional health by investigating wonderful local routes we should probably also make a promise to ourselves to spend LESS time rummaging and ruminating on social media. Like with most things it’s all about balance. And if we can get the equilibrium right we will find ourselves living a rewarding and well-balanced life. So today, rather than boot up your computer why not simply boot up your fabulous feet and take them for a decent serving of healthy lifestyle the good old-fashioned way: WALK YOUR WAY WELL!

Visit Clinica Britannia for an Anti-ageing or Revitalising treatment

O

ur facial bones are what define, shape, and give structure to our face. But as the ageing process takes place, we lose definition, the contour of the jawline decreases, our cheeks flatten, and our skin begins to sag and cause a jowling effect. We at Clinica Britannia can help eliminate this problem by with the use of Restylane fillers, Botox, and facial peelings. Some of the treatments offered at our clinic are: Restylane lyft is used for cheek lifting and to enhance the jawline, creating a lifting effect to your facial features giving you a more natural and youthful look to your skin. Restylane Refyne is a softer and more flexible dermal filler that can be used for the treatment of more dynamic areas of your face, such as around the lips, the nasolabial folds, and the marionette lines. Restylane Kysse enhances the shape and adds volume to your lips for a perfect pout. Botox treatment involves a very small amount of a specific purified protein that, when injected with a very fine needle into the small muscles of the face, helps to eliminate facial wrinkles, particularly those on the forehead, between the brows, and beside the eyes. New to Clinica Britannia is the PRX-T33 peel which rejuvenates, illuminates, and cleanses the skin and is the only peel that is safe to use in the summer months. The peel also aids with the removal of blemishes, wrinkles, scarring from chicken pox, acne, melasma or stretch marks and can be used as a revitalising treatment to the hands, neck, and décolleté area. Come and visit our Anti-aging specialist Dr Irina Artemenko for her professional advice on what would be best for you and how she can give you back that youthful look.

It’s getting hot in here ...so take off all your clothes!

L

iving on the Costa Blanca we are used to high summer temperatures but the last few weeks have seen very high temperatures indeed. What we do need to be aware of are the health risks that such high temperatures bring, and one of these is heat exhaustion.

The symptoms of heat exhaustion may include heavy sweating and a rapid pulse, brought on by your body overheating. It is one of the three main heat-related conditions with heat cramps being the mildest, heat exhaustion being in the middle, and heatstroke being the most severe. Heat exhaustion is caused by exposure to high temperatures, particularly when combined with high humidity, and strenuous physical activity combined with the body’s failure to cool itself. Heat exhaustion can lead to heatstroke if not treated promptly, which can be life-threatening. Fortunately however, heat exhaustion is completely preventable, and treatable; the key is to knowing the signs and symptoms which include: - Cool, moist skin with goose bumps when in the heat - Heavy sweating - Faintness, dizziness or fatigue - Weak, rapid pulse - Low blood pressure upon standing - Muscle cramps - Nausea or headache Besides hot weather and strenuous activity, other causes of heat exhaustion often include: - Dehydration, which reduces your body’s ability to sweat and maintain a normal temperature - Alcohol use, which can affect your body’s ability to regulate your temperature - Overdressing, particularly in clothes that don’t allow sweat to evaporate easily What to do: if you are worried and think you may be suffering from heat exhaustion you should do the following: - Rest in a cool place. Getting into an air-conditioned building is best, but at the very least, find a shady spot or sit in front of a fan. Rest on your back with your legs elevated higher than your heart level. - Drink cool fluids. Stick to water or sports drinks. Don’t drink any alcoholic beverages, which can contribute to dehydration. - Try cooling measures. If possible, take a cool shower, soak in

a cool bath or put towels soaked in cool water on your skin. - Loosen clothing. Remove any unnecessary clothing and make sure your clothes are lightweight and nonbinding. Call your doctor if your signs or symptoms worsen or if they don’t improve within one hour of using these treatment measures. If your body temperature reaches 104ºF (40ºC) or higher, you should seek immediate medical attention because you may need to be given intravenous (IV) fluids to help you rehydrate. However, for peace of mind, and just in case an ambulance is needed for any kind of heat related condition, or for any other medical emergency, it is wise to become a member of the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea (AAEdJ ) Emergency Ambulance Service which covers almost all of Costa Blanca North and will speed one of their state-of-the-art ambulances (think mobile intensive care units) to you, wherever you are. Jalón Valley HELP opens up

L

ast month saw the reopening of Jalón Valley Help's recently totally refurbished shop in Alcalalí. The refurbishment, masterminded by Ron Heggs, has been a major project and will provide a much improved shopping environment, which hopefully will bring the needed additional income to enable the charity to continue all the good work it does to help the most vulnerable in the local community. Jalón Valley President, Elaine Horton, thanked Ron for all his work on the project, Miguel Moldovan, builder for his significant contribution and all the volunteers who helped with painting, cleaning and getting the shop ready to open – "they should all be proud of what they have achieved" she said.

www.femalefocusonline.com Orba JVH shop also opened again and business was brisk but all safety precautions were in place to ensure a safe shopping experience for all. It is great to have the Orba Valley now back with its own excellent charity shop available. Unfortunately the opening of the charity's shop in Xaló has been delayed due to urgent repair work but will be open in the very near future. In the meantime the charity’s van will continue to be just near the shop every Friday morning from 10.00 to 13.00 hrs to accept donations of clean good quality clothes, household items, books etc.

Ciudad Patricia - Open for personal tours By Amanda Hobbs - Sales Advisor - Ciudad Patricia

P

eople who decide to come and live at Ciudad Patricia mainly consider 3 things: not feeling lonely in their senior years, coping with a large villa and garden becomes more and more difficult and of course, the health safety net. Now the current global health situation has made a lot of people think about their living arrangements, especially the more seniors amongst us. These things are all taken care of, plus other facilities, to give you peace of mind. People living here say that they felt ’safe’ during lockdown, secure in the knowledge that a team of people, including the on-site Doctor, were looking out for them and taking every step possible to keep them safe. Since lockdown has been eased, they are able socialise in the Ciudad Patricia ‘bubble’, adding to a sense of staying safe. Residents are starting once again to socialise in safety with lunches with music, paella day with flamenco show and live music (including an Elvis tribute) to name but a few. People are asking us if they can visit to take a look at their options for moving to Ciudad Patricia and I’d like to re-assure everyone that we have taken extensive measures and introduced new protocols to do everything we can for a safe visit. We have hand sanitisers throughout the building, we insist on masks and physical distancing, we meet outside on our lovely terrace, and more. If you’re thinking it’s time to take a look at easier senior living with peace of mind, then call me to arrange your own personalised tour and find out for yourself why so many residents say how glad they are to be living here. · Amanda Hobbs, Sales Advisor, Ciudad Patricia, +34 673 064 288, ahobbs@ciudadpatricia.com. Indian Shakshuka

Shakshuka is cooked and eaten around the world in many shapes and sizes, served in the pan, with fresh bread. It’s basically eggs gently poached in a lush, spicy tomato sauce. Traditionally the sauce is made up of bell peppers, tomatoes, onion, garlic and spices with eggs on top. This is an easy dish to rustle up and serves two for breakfast or a light brunch. This recipe is adaptable; add chickpeas, spinach, sausage, top with cheese and herbs. We’ve opted for aubergines; as they lend a silky richness to the dish. Ingredients • 1 small aubergine optional • 2 tablespoons oil • 1 large onion diced • 1 garlic minced • 1 red pepper chopped • 1 tin chopped tomatoes • 1 teaspoon cumin • 1 teaspoon ground pepper • 1 teaspoon paprika

• 1 teaspoon garam masala • ½ teaspoon salt • 2 chillies chopped optional • 4 large eggs The spices can be easily replaced with a Curry On Cooking kit Prep 25 mins, Cook 20 mins, Serves 2 Method Cut the aubergine (optional) into ½ cm-thick rounds. In a warm frying pan, dry fry the slices on both sides until cooked. Set aside.

In a large frying pan heat the oil to a medium-high heat. Add the onions and cook for 3-4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the peppers, chopped tomatoes and mix well and then tip in all the spices. Bring to the boil, add the aubergine slices. Simmer for 5 minutes until the aubergine slices slightly disintegrate and the sauce thickens. Make 4 wells for the eggs, crack an egg directly into each well. Cover the pan with a lid. As soon as the egg whites turn white they are done. Cook a bit longer if set yolks are preferred. Take off the heat and serve immediately with bread, chapatti, naan or pitta. Tips. Top with fresh parsley or coriander, feta or paneer. Sprinkle with chilli flakes for a spicier kick! LOOKING FOR A GIFT with a difference or to learn a new skill? It’s a whole-body workout There’s a reason many fit and healthy people get out of breath after just a couple of laps in the pool. “It’s basically an all-round form of exercise, which keeps your heart rate up, improves cardiovascular fitness, as well as building endurance and muscle strength,” says Scott McDougall, co-founder of The Independent Pharmacy (theindependentpharmacy.co.uk). Swimming utilises nearly all muscles in the body, including often under-worked areas of your arms. ts 5 health benefi r of swimming – fo body and mind By Liz Connor, PA

O

3. There are mental benefits too We all know exerciseinduced endorphins can help blitz away stress, but simply being in the water can have its own restorative benefits. A recent YouGov poll commissioned by Swim England found almost half a million British adults with mental health problems reduced their visits to their GP or therapist as a result of regular swimming. When asked about the impact of swimming on their day-to-day life, 43% of regular swimmers in the survey said it makes them feel happier, while 26% feel more motivated to complete tasks, and 15% believe life feels more manageable. It’s thought that being in water can help ease sensory overload on our nervous system, helping to promote feelings of calm and relaxation, according to a study published in the Journal of Pain Research last year. PA Photo/iStock.

1. It’s low-impact on your joints Experts recommend 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, and swimming is a great all-rounder with multiple health benefits – no matter your age, physical ability or fitness level. “It’s particularly helpful if you experience joint pain in your knees,” says LloydsPharmacy pharmacist Anshu Kaura (lloydspharmacy. com). “The water supports your body, meaning there is less impact on the skeletal system, including joints. Gentle swimming or water aerobics can also help strengthen muscles around your joints, reducing the impact of aches and pains over time.” Kaura adds that not only is swimming a great low-impact option, but strengthening your muscles can help reduce the degenerative impact of joint pain in the future. “Warm pools are particularly beneficial,” she adds, “as the heat can help loosen stiff joints, supporting flexibility.”

4. It supports weight management “Swimming can help you to maintain a healthy weight, or lose weight as part of a wider plan,” says McDougall. “In fact, you can expect to burn around 200-400 calories per half-hour of swimming, depending on your speed, stroke and weight.” Butterfly is probably the hardest stroke to learn, but is said to be highly effective (although not always popular with other pool users due to the splashing!). If you’re new to swimming, it’s a good idea to start off small and build up your swimming levels at a pace that works for you. Even 15-minute sessions of gentle breaststroke can have benefits. If you’re not confident with your stroke, try some adult swim lessons. 5. It’s good for all ages One of the best things about swimming is that anyone can reap the benefits – and you can keep it up at any age. Unlike many trendy HIIT workouts that are popular at boutique gyms right now, swimming feels more inclusive to all ages and fitness levels, and you don’t have to be an amateur athlete to enjoy it. “The bottom line is that regular swimming is great for everyone; studies have found it can help you lead a healthier, longer life and reduce your risk of developing many major health conditions, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes,” says McDougall. “It’s very good for those who aren’t particularly active, have injuries or are a bit older. So whatever your fitness level, age or ability, it’s an accessible way to keep fit.”

2020 A Strange Year

www.femalefocusonline.com

Article supplied by Lee Charlesworth

2020 has been a very strange year up to date, I am not just talking about the rather obvious C word, but the weather. Traditionally speaking the weather here follows a similar pattern, we can be cool through the spring months, then a great growing season through to June. Then normally the summer heat hits and as far as the plants are concerned that’s it, they’ve done growing for now and they don’t want to flower. Naturally they do this as the summer heat is demanding on plants and consequently they do what they can to conserve energy, which means making sure they avoid growing rapidly and flowering.

&

Then as the first storms and rain come towards September and things start to cool a bit, they often have a second smaller continued on next page growing spurt.

www.femalefocusonline.com

Page 27

&

But 2020 has been unusual, we have seen no snow on the mountains until it was too late for the ski seasons to work, we have had an extended spring, there was even snow in the mountains in June which was incredible, all very bizarre. continued from previous page

Even now we are in summer, we have had rain and storms and because of this the plants are still growing much like they are in spring. By the time you read this, things may have increased to a steady August temperature, but I am not so sure it will. But if there is one thing I am not going to do, it is predict how 2020 will end up being the topsy turvey year it has been so far. The top and tail of it is that despite everything that has gone on at least your plants will have enjoyed it, a little relief from the summer heat and an extended growing season has allowed them to grow fully. I hope everyone who is lucky enough to have their own garden has been able to enjoy it for what it is really worth, a green oasis you can call your own to relax in. If you would like to make your oasis a little more enjoyable then contact Charlesworth Gardens to help with your garden project, no matter how big or small.

WAXING LYRICAL By Benny Davis

A

s I have repeatedly said, local amdram and virtually the entire cultural music and drama scene has been decimated by recent events. Lights have gone out in theatres, village halls and entertainment centres all over the world, orchestras have abandoned their instruments, and vocal performers have been left frustrated and waiting in the wings. One local example is the muchacclaimed four-part harmony group, Lyrical, whose inaugural performances on the Orihuela-Costa last year went down a storm with the concert-going public. We contacted Lyrical Chairman Trent Harris and asked how lockdown had affected their forward planning and above all, group morale. He assured us that although social distancing during the last four months had cancelled out all normal rehearsals, morale within the group was extremely positive with everyone straining-at-the-leash to get back together again. Staying in the positive vein, he added that they were hoping to begin rehearsals in early September with the aim to stage their popular Christmas show at La Zenia church in December. Not alone with his aspirations, we understand that Lyrical Musical Director Philip Mitchell, has made the most of his lockdown period by producing a new magical programme for this musical re-launch. Considering we have lost several local groups during this epidemic and many others struggling to survive, it was a breath of fresh air to be able to record this incredibly positive attitude to their musical future. Carry on Lyrical!

Jávea Players: ‘The Master of the Musical’ was well received last month. Now the Players are looking for a master and/or mistress of the Box Office. The couple who streamlined the on-line system are stepping down. It’s not onerous and only requires about 5 hours’ work per performance [usually 4 a year]. Why not talk to David on 657 579 405 to find out more? For info about the group: www.javeaplayers.com Phoenix Dancers: The Dancers are well underway with rehearsals for their next show, and as soon as they are given the green light from the various venues, they will announce the dates and times. So, all you dancers and singers, do not vegetate at home, why not join this talented group and improve your own techniques? Phone Phaedra for details: 607 290 896. Sounds Familiar: The Company are looking forward to their next production ‘Magic of the Musicals’ to be performed early in 2021. If you are interested in joining this group, or would like more information, please contact Philip on 96 558 1483 or philip@soundsfamiliar.es The Chaplaincy Singers: The Singers are back! Why not join them on Friday 21 August at 16.00 at the Ermita Sant Josep, La Fustera when they will present ‘Glorious’, an invitation to joy, directed by Philip Ashley. Take your friends and enjoy an evening of lovely music and relax with a drink in the open air. Tickets 10€ from 965 581 483. Valley Voices: The Voices are on their summer break but, providing restrictions allow, will be starting again on 5 September with a new and exciting programme. They are also forward planning a January concert. If you’d like to join the voices, they normally rehearse in Alcalali, but to confirm, please call: 634 301 483 or: valleyvoicesspain@gmail.com

If you would like your group to be part of the Stage Diary please email editor@femalefocusonline.com. Deadline for copy is the 15th of the month prior to publication. Stage Diary Costa Blanca South information can be found online at www.femalefocusonline.com
