Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why we offer our FR series in a disc brake version, too, because we are convinced they are the best available technology for most situations and rider types. They provide greater modulation and more consistent performance than rim brakes. Plus, they perform better in adverse weather conditions. Wherever the road takes you, and in whatever conditions you find yourself, the disc brake-equipped FR gives you the confidence to tackle any descent. For racers and performance-focused riders, disc brakes provide all of the aforementioned benefits, which make for improved control that allows you to carry speed through turns for a more fluid riding experience.

INDUSTRY LEADING CARBON TECHNOLOGY Drawing on decades of carbon fiber innovation, Felt tested the merits of dozens of new lay-ups with its industry leading construction methods in order to give each and every FR model the most refined materials selection of any Felt road bike series, ever. All FR Disc models utilize TeXtreme carbon fiber, a patented Spread Tow fabric that consists of flat tapes instead of yarns of fiber. With Spread Tow fabric, more fibers can be packed into a given area than traditional yarn. This means that more fiber and less resin are used for a lighter and stiffer lay-up.

RACING TUNED REAR TRIANGLE Racing on the road demands a precise level of suppleness to absorb road chatter and ensure that a bike’s wheels remain firmly in contact with the road, thereby mitigating energy loss. That’s why Felt engineers tuned the FR’s chassis for added suppleness in order to maximize traction and rear-end performance. The traditional rear brake bridge commonly found between the seat stays of many road bikes is not needed any more because of the disc brakes, so the design of the seat stays can focus on compliance without having to absorb braking forces. What all of this means for the rider is that the FR boasts a precision amount of compliance throughout its chassis that keeps the bike firmly in contact with the road over rough surfaces and through corners, ensuring that none of the rider’s energy is wasted, much like the suspension of a high-performance road racing motorcycle.

THRU-AXLES The disc brake-equipped version of the FR was designed with front and rear thru-axles, whose dependability has been proven for years on high-performance mountain bikes. In addition to a more secure interface with the FR’s fork over a traditional quick-release skewer, the front thru-axle provides greater stiffness, giving you enhanced control and stability. Likewise, the FR’s rear thru-axle offers greater security over a traditional quick-release skewer, ensures maximum concentricity and enhances stiffness, all of which combine for increased power transfer and precise rear shifting.

TIRE CLEARANCE & WHEEL DESIGN Disc brakes do not only offer better braking performance, but make room for many other improvements, too. Tire clearance on road bikes was always limited by the brake calipers of rim brakes. Now that they’re gone there is room for wider tires, which are not only more comfortable, but have been proven to roll faster and offer aerodynamic advantages. The FR Disc models have room for at least a 28 mm tire according to ISO standards.

As the braking forces are created in completely different locations on the bike, rims don’t have to be constructed around a brake track any more and don’t have to absorb the heat generated by continuous braking on longer descents. Especially carbon rims had to be overbuilt in certain areas to cope with the heat - now they can be lighter and will last longer!
