Letter From The Publisher Greetings in 2024! Happy New Year! The arrival of a new year always fills me with excitement and the promise of a fresh start. It's an opportune moment to reflect on life and assess if we're prioritizing self-care. As a busy mom, I've realized the importance of not pouring from an empty cup; avoiding burnout and stress is crucial for the well-being of my family. This new year provides an excellent chance to initiate a fitness program and encourage the kids to embrace an active lifestyle. However, with screens and YouTube videos vying for their attention, motivating them can be challenging. Check out page 8 for some useful tips on inspiring physical activity. Rather than making resolutions, my focus this year revolves around simplyfing more. Professional Organizer, Amy Bergman from Amyzing Spaces returns with valuable advice on achieving these goals in 2024 with 5 steps page 16. As we gear up to return to school after the winter break, it's never too early to start contemplating the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. January marks the commencement of open houses and tours for many private and charter schools. It is also the deadline to submit your application for Choice Programs at the School District of Palm Beach County. Delve into our School Spotlight on page 18 to learn more about all the options available in Palm Beach County.

Fitness for Kids Who Don't Like Sports Keeping Kids Active - Anyone who's seen kids on a playground knows that most are naturally physically active and love to move around. And climbing to the top of a slide or swinging from the monkey bars can help lead kids to a lifetime of being active. As they get older, it can be harder for kids to get enough daily activity. This can be due to: • more demands at school • a feeling among some kids that they aren't good at sports • a lack of active role models • busy working families And even if kids have the time and the desire to be active, parents may not feel comfortable letting them freely roam the neighborhood as kids did generations ago. So their chances to be active might be limited. Still, parents can teach a love of physical activity and help kids fit it into their everyday lives. Doing so can set healthy patterns that will last into adulthood. What Are Some Benefits of Being Active? When kids are active, their bodies can do 8 January 2024| PB Parenting |

the things they want and need them to do. Why? Because regular exercise provides these benefits: • strong muscles and bones • healthy weight • decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes • better sleep • a better outlook on life Physically active kids also are more likely to be motivated, focused, and successful in school. And mastering physical skills builds confidence. What Motivates Kids? So there's a lot to gain from regular physical activity, but how do you encourage kids to do it? The three keys are: Choosing the right activities for a child's age: If you don't, the child may be bored or frustrated. Giving kids plenty of opportunity to be active: Kids need parents to make activity easy by providing equipment, signing them up for classes or sports teams, and taking them to playgrounds and other active spots.

Instead of playing on a team, they can work on fundamental skills. School-age: With school-age kids spending more time in front of screens, the challenge for parents is to help them find physical activities they enjoy and feel successful doing. These can range from traditional sports like baseball and basketball to martial arts, biking, hiking, and playing outside. As kids learn basic skills and simple rules in the early school-age years, there might only Keeping the focus on fun: Kids won't do something they don't enjoy. When kids enjoy an be a few athletic standouts. As kids get older, differences in ability and personality become activity, they want to do more of it. Practicing a skill — whether it's swimming or riding a tricycle more apparent. Commitment and interest level often go along with ability, which is why it's — improves their abilities and helps them feel important to find an activity that's right for your accomplished, especially when the effort is child. Schedules start getting busy during these noticed and praised. These good feelings often years, but don't forget to set aside some time for make kids want to continue the activity and free play. even try others. Age-Appropriate Activities The best way for kids to get physical activity is by incorporating physical activity into their daily routine. Toddlers and preschoolers should play actively several times a day. Children 6 to 17 years should do 60 minutes or more physical activity daily. This can include free play at home, active time at school, and participation in classes or organized sports. Age-Based Advice: Preschoolers: Preschoolers need play and exercise that helps them continue to develop important motor skills — kicking or throwing a ball, playing tag or follow the leader, hopping on one foot, riding a trike or bike with training wheels, or running obstacle courses. Although some sports leagues may be open to kids as young as 4, organized team sports are not recommended until they're a little older. Preschoolers can't understand complex rules and often lack the attention span, skills, and coordination needed to play sports. 10 January 2024| PB Parenting |

Teens: Teens have many choices when it comes to being active — from school sports to afterschool interests, such as yoga or skateboarding. It's a good idea to have an exercise plan since it often has to be sandwiched between school and other commitments. Do what you can to make it easy for your teen to exercise by providing transportation and the necessary gear or equipment (including workout clothes). In some cases, the right clothes and shoes might help a shy teen feel comfortable biking or going to the gym. Kids' Fitness Personalities In addition to a child's age, it's important to consider their fitness personality. Personality traits, genetics, and athletic ability combine to influence kids' attitudes toward sports and other physical activities, especially as they get older. Which of these 3 types best describes your child?

| PBParenting.com | January 2024 11

1. The nonathlete: This child may lack athletic ability, interest in physical activity, or both. 2. The casual athlete: This child is interested in being active but isn't a star player and is at risk of getting discouraged in a competitive athletic environment. 3. The athlete: This child has athletic ability, is committed to a sport or activity, and likely to ramp up practice time and intensity of competition. If you understand the concepts of temperament and fitness types, you'll be better able to help your kids find the right activities and get enough exercise — and find enjoyment in physical activity. Some kids want to pursue excellence in a sport, while others may be perfectly happy and fit as casual participants. The athlete, for instance, will want to be on the basketball team, while the casual athlete may

just enjoy shooting hoops at the playground or in the driveway. The nonathlete is likely to need a parent's help and encouragement to get and stay physically active. That's why it's important to encourage kids to remain active even though they aren't top performers. Whatever their fitness personality, all kids can be physically fit. A parent's positive attitude will help a child who's reluctant to exercise. Be active yourself and support your kids' interests. If you start this early enough, they'll come to regard activity as a normal — and fun — part of your family's everyday routine. © 1995- 2024. The Nemours Foundation/KidsHealth®. All rights reserved.

Instilling Resilience in Children DR. TRACIE QUILL, DOCTOR OF PSYCHOLOGY AND PARENT EDUCATOR Parents want their children to be successful academically/career and in life satisfaction. Do you know what a bigger predictor of success is than IQ? The ability to regulate our emotions. This means a person’s ability to respond in a healthy way to their emotional experience. This is not something we are born knowing how to do. Therefore, children need to be taught this. Many children today are experiencing anxiety post pandemic, and learning to regulate one’s emotions is very powerful for countering anxiety. Anxiety is a symptom of unprocessed feelings. And no feeling gets fully processed until it’s validated with empathy. In the parenting classes I teach and private consulting I do with families we talk about the following tools which can be very impactful for emotion regulation when used consistently. It can be hard to see our children upset. The most powerful and healthiest thing a person can hear when they are expressing an emotion is empathy and validation. Even if you don’t agree with why they are feeling this way, it may be a big deal to them. Validation immediately soothes us because we feel heard and seen. Sometimes we feel afraid to do this because 14 January 2024| PB Parenting |

they think they are encouraging misbehavior. Not so. When your child is displaying a strong emotion (e.g. sadness, anger/tantrum) these are steps you can take: 1. Take 3 deep breaths, as your energy will transfer to them. Placing your hand on your heart while doing this helps you calm down much more quickly. 2. Get down at their eye level. 3. Try to speak calmly and softly. “Are you feeling____ because___?” For example, “Are you feeling mad because you can’t have the candy?” “I understand, you really wanted that.” You are simply saying you understand how they are feeling. When your child’s feelings are noticed and validated, they have less of a need to intensify them. 4. Restate the boundary and stick to it. For example, “Well, because I love you and care about your health we’re not getting that now.” This builds emotional security because they can trust you to stick to your word. And when it’s said with a kind tone, it invites cooperation.

You are teaching your child valuable things during this: • You are modeling emotion regulation by staying calm yourself, and your modeling is your most powerful parenting tool, not your words. • You are teaching them to process their feelings in a healthy way by letting them fully feel them and not minimizing them by saying, “You’re ok/fine.” “Don’t get upset/ worry.” The good news is feelings that are fully felt pass quickly. • When children are allowed to have their feelings they build “disappointment muscles” and realize they can survive their feelings, and only through navigating these challenges in a healthy way do we build resilience. By modeling empathy and validating feelings you are connecting mindfully to your child.

Connection is our deepest need as humans and children that feel connected and respected by the adults in their life thrive! Dr. Tracie Quill is a Doctor of Psychology and certified Parent Educator. BY AMY BERGMAN Happy New Year! Believe it or not, as a professional organizer, I have never been a fan of New Year’s resolutions. I believe that any day of the year can be an opportunity for a fresh start. Moreover, I don’t give into “hustle culture”, where being busy all the time is a good thing with a goal to make everything perfect. This is why I am sharing my goal to Simplify More in 2024. Quite often my clients are surprised to hear me talk like this when I suggest we choose simple and meaningful over perfect and stressful. Wouldn’t it be better if you could easily find and retrieve what you need versus everything being “Pinterest Perfect” every day? Below are my top 5 ways (believe me, I have a few more) to bring more simplicity and calm into your home. Some of them take only a few minutes, while others require more of a mindset shift. However, if you are able to implement a few of these in your home, I promise they will impact your everyday living. 16 January 2024| PB Parenting |

5 ways to bring more simplicity and calm into your home this year: 1. Determine the purpose of each room. Is your guest room solely a guest room, or does it need to also operate as a home office, a storage space or a playroom? What items need to live in that space to serve all the purposes? Do you have the proper furniture, equipment, and storage setup to best store everything? What can you gather from other spaces in your home to be in this room to better serve its purpose(s)? 2. Clear your countertops. Commit to having clear countertops in your kitchen and other common areas. Visual clutter stops the eye and impacts our ability to feel inner peace and calm. Leave out only the items that need to be out (be honest with yourself in making this determination). 3. Identify homes for everything. Having a place for everything and everything in its place makes morning routines SO much better and

will help you achieve #2 above. 4. Reset your living/family room every night. This should only take five minutes. Put the pillows back on the couch, fold the throw blankets, collect all the cups and trash, gather all items that need to make their way to other rooms like the bedrooms. Ask for help with this, it will take even less time if two or more people assist. 5. Tackle 1-minute projects immediately. Instead of creating a pile of things “to do later”, just do them now. Sort the stack of mail, address the envelope and stick it in the mail box, take out the trash, sign the kid’s permission slip. Often something that can be done anytime is done at no time. None of these things need to be done today, next week or this month. Think about which ones you think might be most helpful to you. Tackle one at a time, slowly making progress and simplifying your life.

These five new habits will help create a more productive and peaceful environment or you and your family. As we head into 2024, I will share more. Be sure to follow on Facebook and Instagram to catch them all! Happy New Year and let’s all aim to simplify more in 2024.
