5 Ways to Celebrate a Socially Distance Baby Shower

The pandemic has put a damper on a traditional baby shower. No more large gatherings and squeezing around the mom to be playing games. But you can still organize something special for the momto-be. Here are some ideas to safely shower a new mom with some love. Drive-by baby shower You probably have been to a drive-by birthday party. You can create a similar experience for a shower. Invite friends and family to create signs, decorate their cars and cruise by the mom-to-be’s house. This can be parade-style, or you can schedule 15-minute windows for each car to drive up, have some one-on-one time (from a distance, with a mask) to grab gifts for the new mom. Let them eat cake! Have your host coordinate individual pre-packaged Nothing Bundt Cakes to give out to everyone who showed up as a thank you. Reach out to their Palm Beach Gardens bakery at (561) 968-5100 or email palmbeachgardens@nothingbundtcakes. com.

Video baby shower Zoom is here for a bit and it’s not just for work meetings! Plan a virtual event using a video chat app like Zoom, FaceTime, Google Hangouts, or Skype. Pick a tech-savvy friend to be a host to move the shower along, and make sure that invites have specific information about how to access the virtual event. Some guests may be newer to video chats too. So it’s also a good idea to share tips like where to place the camera and the importance of finding a quiet place without a lot of background noise. Give people at least a month’s notice because shipping times are running long right now. Divide the event into different activities much like you’d do in person, with chunks of time for guests to socialize, play online quizzes and games (baby bingo, price is right, etc), or have mom-to-be show off the baby’s nursery or do a virtual gender reveal. If you play games, online gift cards are an easy solution in case you need a raffle or game prizes.

Palm Beach County’s Only Hospital to be Nationally Recognized Among the

TOP 5% for MATERNITY CARE We Deliver for You

A COMMUNITY BUILT ON CARE With our nationally recognized care, highly-trained healthcare professionals, advanced technology, and all private rooms, it’s no wonder that more expectant mothers choose St. Mary’s over any other hospital in Palm Beach County. • More babies delivered than any other hospital in Palm Beach County • Specialized physicians and nurses • Palm Beach County’s largest Level III NICU-Florida’s highest designated level of neonatal intensive care • Neonatologists, anesthesiologists and obstetricians in-house 24/7 • OB Nurse Navigator guides patients on their journey from prenatal to post-delivery • All private rooms and suites available at The Birthplace Suites • Pre-registration and tours available • Comprehensive child birth education • Dedicated children’s hospital offering a wide array of services and pediatric specialists

For more information or to sign up for a virtual tour, please call 844.447.4687 or visit stmarysmc.com.

Make sure to decorate: Just because everyone will be in different places doesn’t mean there’s no need to decorate. The opposite is actually true. Have the host, drop off a box of fun baby shower decor, including balloons and banners, to decorate before the shower. Care packages Ask family and friends to send snail-mail cards over a one- or two-week period, so mom-to-be gets a series of surprises in her mailbox. Instead of an event, organize a group gift. For example, get friends to all put money in on a professional (socially distant) photoshoot to capture this sweet time in pregnancy or newborn photographs. Warner-Prokos Photography can help coordinate surprising the new mom. www. wpnewborns.com Meal Train When was the last time mom-to-be got to have a fancy dinner – but in the comfort (and total safety) of home? Coordinate gift cards for a restaurant near her that offers takeout or delivery, or let her know in advance which day her dinner will be taken care of, and drop off a special homemade meal. This also is a great way to send love once the baby’s born! and support local businesses. Sip and See If it seems too much to have a shower beforehand, you can also host a virtual event after the baby arrives known as a Sip and See. Get ready for friends and fam to “ooh” and “aww” right alongside you (at a distance, of course!). Sip and see parties have been a thing in the South for a long time, but they’ve recently grown in popularity in the rest of the country. But what is a sip and see? It’s exactly what it sounds like: close friends and family come over to sip a beverage and see the new baby. Think of it as a baby welcoming party! However, due to the

pandemic, we recommend hosting this virtual. Have your webcam ready for baby’s closeup and all the germs stay away too! Since a sip and see party happens postbaby, you probably have most if not all of the essential baby goods already—car seat, stroller, carrier or wrap, basic clothes, and a small diaper supply. If you don’t have the essentials yet, be sure to let your guests know so they can prioritize those things. If the essentials are taken care of, then most sip and see gifts will likely be an assortment of smaller gear items like a swing, bouncer play gym, toys, books, clothes, and keepsakes (especially gifts with baby’s name engraved). And don’t forget about diapers; you can never have enough of them. Follow CDC Guidelines Please follow CDC guidelines, anytime guests want to get near the new mom or baby. • Maintain a distance of at least 6 feet or more from people who don’t live in your household. • Host your gathering outdoors, when possible. • When guests arrive, minimize gestures that promote close contact. For example, don’t shake hands, do elbow bumps, or give hugs. Instead wave and verbally greet them. • Provide hand sanitizer. • Wear masks when less than 6 feet apart from people or indoors. For more guidelines go to https://www.cdc. gov/coronavirus/ PB Parenting are not safety experts. There is an inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 that exists in any place where people are gathering and are present. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, senior citizens and guests with underlying medical conditions are especially vulnerable. Please take proper precautions. Sunday Sept. 13 is Grandparents Day

Keeping In Touch With Grandparents During The Pandemic BY TANNI HAAS, PH.D.

The pandemic is taking a toll on all of us, especially grandparents who, due to their age, are particularly vulnerable. Many grandparents haven’t visited their grandkids for months. But grandkids are important to grandparents, and vice versa! Here are six ways you can help the kids stay in contact with your parents – their grandparents:

Email or Text - Grandparents and grandkids can also keep in contact via email or text. Have the kids write about their activities; grandparents love hearing about all the exciting things their grandkids are doing.

If the grandparents don’t have an email account or don’t know how to text, use it as an opportunity for some extra bonding. Video Calls - Whether your family prefers Encourage the kids to create an email FaceTime, Skype, Zoom or some other video- account for grandma and grandpa or teach based technology, use that technology to them how to text - kids love to show how make the grandparents an integral part of smart they are, and grandparents love to their grandkids’ lives. Most grandparents learn new things. wake up early anyway, so consider having Social Media - If your child is on social them be the grandkids’ alarm clocks in the media, encourage the kids to invite their morning. It’s comforting to kids to be woken grandparents to “follow” them on social up by familiar, smiley faces. media like Instagram and Snapchat, today’s digital version of the photo album. Another The kids can’t and shouldn’t focus on their option is to have the kids email, text, or school work all day; they need frequent mail their grandparents a weekly batch of breaks to relax and recharge. Why not invite photos, which will make them feel really the grandparents to join the kids for some close to each other. virtual, mid-afternoon stretching? Both may need some physical exercise. If the Postcards/Letters - When was the last time grandparents play an instrument or enjoy you received a postcard or a letter from a arts and crafts, they could give the kids loved one? I thought so! Few people write some virtual lessons. letters anymore, and most people only send postcards from vacation locations. It In the evening, before the kids go to sleep, doesn’t have to be this way. Have the kids invite the grandparents to read them a bed write a postcard or a letter, maybe with time story, chat a bit about their day or, if some beautiful drawings. mail from the grandkids! Don’t forget to send them a card for Grandparents; Day on September 13. Drive By / Meet Up - If the grandparents don’t live too far away, consider a “car visit” drive-by where you can wave to each other from the car or, even better, sit down in a driveway at a safe distance and talk. You could meet up at the local park or playground, as long as you keep a safe distance. This ways you’ll keep the grandparents safe, but let them enjoy the kids - and you - up close. Running Errands - You and the kids could also run errands for them, and then leave the groceries outside their door. You get to see each other AND do something helpful for the people who’ve done, and continue to do, so much for you and the kids. Tanni Haas, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Communication Arts, Sciences and Disorders at the City University of New York – Brooklyn College.

Origins of Grandparents Day Congress passed the legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents’ Day and, on August 3, 1978, then-President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation. Marian McQuade started to campaign for Grandparents Day in the early 1970s. Her idea was for the holiday to be an incentive for families to visit with elderly family members living in nursing homes. Her idea, however, quickly grew to encompass much more. As she worked with politicians and others, she emphasized the wisdom and family history grandparents can offer their grandchildren and other family members. The month of September was chosen for Grandparents Day as a symbol of the “autumn years” of life. It also coincides with the start of school, giving children the perfect opportunity to interview their grandparents for school reports.

Working from Home with Young Children Parenting during these times is certainly challenging. Many parents are trying to balance working from home and taking care of a baby or toddler. Older children are a little easier and they are now busy themselves with distance learning but what about the under 5 years old group? PB Parenting chatted with a local father of two, Brian Guralnick, about the daily challenges. He and his wife manage running their business, a local injury law firm, and raising their two daughters. PBP: You are a dad of two young children, we know many of our readers are struggling with the same hard decisions during this time. How are you and your wife managing running a business and managing your household? Brian: Covid-19 has made life an even greater balancing test for most of us. Because of the many restrictions, this pandemic has placed upon both our work and family life, we had to learn pivot around the activities that needed to be adjusted. I was fortunate that my injury law team was ahead of the curve from a technology standpoint. My entire office was working remotely and efficiently by

16 September 2020| PB Parenting |

the first day of the statewide lockdown. We learned how to do Zoom meetings with not just our clients, but also for legal proceedings, such as court hearings, depositions, and mediations. We are doing fantastic in so many respects with these new skills and procedures, as well as keeping my team and clients safe. Regarding my family, we also had to learn new safe activities that we could do together, most of them in the outdoors. We bought bicycles with a kids’ seat and we plan regular bike rides together. We got an annual pass to Lion Country Safari. And we go downtown to take walks and to even fly a kite. The restrictions have caused us to work harder and longer in many respects, so we have less time in the day. We have learned to be efficient with our time, as well as taking moments to be grateful for being healthy and having all the wonderful people in our lives. With that said, we usually pass out falling fast asleep shortly after dinner. PBP: How old are your children, will they be at school this fall? Have you found childcare for them while you and your wife are at the office, or how do you anticipate managing that?

Brian: I have 2 young daughters, a threeyear-old and a one-year-old. It’s been very difficult because they are too young to play by themselves and they require constant supervision. We are blessed to have our mother in law living with us during the pandemic so she is able to help. But it is still a lot of work and my wife and I rarely have a moment to ourselves. We are still struggling with the idea of sending our kids to school. Again, another balancing test for most families. We understand that we need to keep our family safe, yet we know our children need social interaction, and my wife and I need some alone time. Older children can take virtual classes. But you cannot expect a three-year-old, nor a one-year-old to sit in front of a computer for very long, if at all. We have heard of parents starting their own small pod groups of three to four children where they meet socially distanced and share a teacher. We are interested in learning more about this.

PBP: You recently launched a big giveaway for a gift card to help families buy supplies or set up a virtual learning space at their home, did you set up a learning space for your kids at home and/or in your office? Brian: Our daughters are a little young to have the attention span for virtual learning so we have not yet set anything up. But I think virtual learning is going to be around even after Covid-19 so it is something we should definitely plan to set up. PBP: Do you have any advice for other dads (or moms!) about how to help ease anxiety children may have during this time? Brian: Just hang in there and do your best. Understand you are not alone. Listen to your gut and make your best judgment decisions. Although things will not likely be exactly the same as before Covid-19, things will get better. And

we have learned some new skills and appreciations during this pandemic that I know we will keep with us even after Covid-19 is gone. Pediatric Dentistry
