Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Where did the summer go? Back to School is almost here! There has been a slight delay but the new start date is Monday, August 31 for Palm Beach County Public Schools. This certainly wasn’t what I was expecting for the return to school this year. My oldest child is starting Middle School this year, she is a little disappointed with how school is starting she was ready to be big kid on a new campus! There are alternatives for this upcoming school year. Some private schools are starting in-person classes this month. Check out our annual School Spotlight for great information about local private schools.

At the end of last school year, I had a temporary school station in the living room for my two children. It had pros mostly cons. Over the summer I re-did both children’s rooms and have created some permanent stations for them to work. Check out some tips on setting up a successful virtual school station on page 8.

Virtual Distance Learning School Setup and Supply Checklist Back to school is going to look a little different this year. We are trading in backpacks and uniforms for computers and pajamas! If you are attending Palm Beach County Public Schools at the end of the month, all students start school with virtual distant learning. Setting up your child for success is important. Here are some suggestions and a supply list to start the virtual year off right. Parents were given a small dose of virtual distant learning at the end of the school year with distance learning come back it might be time to create a more permanent setup. Have a Designated Area for School Work Creating a designated area means fewer distractions and getting into a “school mindset and mode” in that space. This can be a spare room or even a corner in their bedroom, living room etc;. The most important thing is to use that area only for school. Other considerations to include: • Make sure this area is quiet or has a door that can be closed. This gives students privacy when they’re working, talking to their teachers or taking an exam and reduces distractions. • Have space for a desk or a table near a power outlet. • Incorporate flexible seating. This can be a comfortable spot for reading or a change of pace during the school day. Beanbags,

8 August 2020| PB Parenting |

hammock or inflatable chairs, shaggy rugs, and oversize pillows can help a student relax and take a break between classes. • If you are able to set up a small desk or table near a window, that would allow for natural light to filter in. Natural light is healthy for you physically and emotionally. • Ensure there is enough light for reading and taking notes. The monitor should be at eye level and the student’s chair must be comfortable and offer back support. • Stock this area with school supplies! Include pens, pencils, markers, paper, notebooks, and any other tools your student may need besides a computer. Other Supplies for your Learning Space • Laptop or Desktop - check with your child’s school as they maybe able to provide your child with a laptop. • Headphones are helpful for keeping kids focused by canceling out background noise. • Webcam - If your device isn’t already equipped with a camera, you’ll definitely want to invest in one. It’s important for the teacher to see your child’s face and be able to interact with them. Without a camera, your child’s classes will be one-sided. • Printer - It is helpful to print out math sheets and other homework. • The Basics - students still need basic supplies like paper (notebook and printer) pencils, crayons, and scissors.

Tips for keeping your distance learning space organized Organization and clutter control are critical. Just like you, your child is experiencing a massive change in routine. Check out 1THRIVE Command Centers to help stay organize not only for distance learning but throughout the school year. They are a local company based out of Sunrise, Florida. Command centers come in two different sizes (wide/long) depending on your spatial preference with multiple preset configurations. Each configuration is customizable depending on where you want to place the chalkboard, corkboard, file folder, hooks, buckets and accessories (i.e. tacks, magnets, markers, inspirational cards, and header magnets). 1THRIVE Command

Centers are designed to help you achieve your goals - including fitness, meal planning, scheduling, motivational and more! Base pricing starts at $99 at 1THRIVE.com. Save $20 off systems with their back to school sale. Mix it up! Don’t sit in the same spot all day. Just like at school your child needs to move around. Help your child by moving and taking breaks. Some options include: • Read a book in the backyard. •Take school work to a comfortable location; spread out on the floor with pillows. • Pause for meals and snack time in the kitchen. If age appropriate, allow your child to help cook or prepare food. • Take a “recess” break to go for a walk or bike ride around the neighborhood (maintain safe social distancing from others). You could even go play ball outside or swim if you have a pool. PB Parenting hopes you have a good start to the new school year!

Learning a New Skill or Hobby During the Pandemic BY FELONICE MERRIMAN Are your kids constantly singing a chorus of “I am bored”? Instead of focusing on the (very long) list of what you can’t do, here are some things they’ll love doing. Now that we are staying home more, it is a great time to pick up a new skill or hobby. My two children, who are 11 and 8 years old, have really upped their cooking skills during this time. My 8 year old son can make eggs many ways (sunny side up, omelets and scrabbled). My daughter has taken more to baking and loves making cookies, brownies and muffins. Both now require just light supervision in the kitchen and help taking pans in and out of the oven. Maybe you aren’t a cook yourself? Now is a great time to take some virtual classes and do it together! Another fun activity we have started recently is container gardening. My son loves to see the product of his hard work. He has a nice container garden going and we just planted

carrots the other day. We have successfully grown grape tomatoes, radishes, cucumbers basil and peppers. We have also started 3 new Mango trees from pits. There have been flops but we are still learning. Art is another easy and fun activity to learn during this time. It is easy to order supplies from Amazon and have them delivered right to your door. We have enjoyed painting rocks, making collages, painting, making sculptures using modeling clay, sewing and knitting during this time. We have also started art journal as well. My son has also taken to woodworking activities and I was able to join a monthly club where they send all the tools, supplies and instructions. Also check out Palm Beach State College Summer Youth College website, they will be offering fun classes to help you or your child pick up a new hobby or skill. Plan for possible school closures or periods of quarantine If transmission is increasing in your community or if multiple children or staff test positive for COVID-19, the school building might close. Similarly, if a close contact of your child (within or outside of school) tests positive for COVID-19, your child may need to stay home for a 2-week quarantine period. You may need to consider the feasibility of teleworking, taking leave from work, or identifying someone who can supervise your child in the event of school building closures or quarantine. Develop a plan as a family to protect household members who are at increased risk for severe illness. Be familiar with your school’s plan for how they will communicate with families when a positive case or exposure to someone with COVID-19 is identified and ensure student privacy is upheld. without touching the cloth. Also explain the importance of wearing a cloth face covering and how it protects other people from getting sick. If you have a young child, help build their comfort wearing a cloth face covering and become comfortable seeing others in face covers. • Praise your child for wearing a cloth face covering correctly. • Put a cloth face covering on stuffed animals. • Draw a cloth face covering on a favorite book character. • Show images of other children wearing cloth face coverings. • Allow your child to choose their cloth face covering that meets any dress requirements your school may have. • Consider providing your child with a container (e.g., labeled resealable bag) to bring to school to store their cloth face coverings when not wearing it (e.g., when eating). Mental Health & Social-Emotional Wellbeing Considerations •Talk with your child about how school will look different (e.g., desks far apart from each other, teachers maintaining physical distance, possibility of staying in the classroom for lunch). • Talk with your child about how school is going and about interactions with classmates and teachers. Find out how your child is feeling and communicate that what they may be feeling is normal. • Anticipate behavior changes in your child. Watch for changes like excessive crying or irritation, excessive worry or sadness, unhealthy eating or sleeping habits, difficulty concentrating, which may be signs of your child struggling with stress and anxiety. • Ask your school about any plans to reduce potential stigma related to having

or being suspected of having COVID-19. • Check if your school has a plan to help students adjust to being back in school. Students might need help adjusting to how COVID-19 has disrupted their daily life. Support may include school counseling and psychological services (including grief counseling), socialemotional learning (SEL)- focused programs and curricula, and peer/social support groups. You can be a role model for your child by practicing self-care: • Take breaks • Get plenty of sleep • Exercise • Eat well • Stay socially connected Content source: CDC. gov National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), Division of Viral Diseases. Science and Engineering - Nexplore Makers Club gives students the opportunity to interact with fun Maker kits that enhance mechanical, art and engineering skills. Students experiment and create their own inventions which they can keep and share with family and friends. They experiment with structural design, learn to harness energy to power race cars, design remote-controlled hydraulic arms, and much more. The Robocoding program introduces students to the fundamentals of robotics and coding. They use award-winning robotics cubes with distinctive functions to create machines that can light up, move, and interact with the world around them. They gain more understanding of how they can combine simple building blocks to perform

ever more complex tasks and learn more about fundamental concepts such as inputs, outputs and processing. Digital tech - The Virtual Reality kit allows students to develop experiences in virtual reality with CoSpaces software that runs on browsers, smartphones and Google Cardboard. For example, they can create a personal 3D museum displaying their family history and use VR goggles to walk through it. The Game Design kit teaches students Scratch, a virtual programming language suitable for beginner coders. They can develop 2D games to publish online. A Web Design kit teaches students the basics of building a website from scratch. They learn the two main languages for the web, HTLM and CSS. Using the CodeCademy platform, they create a website all on their own. Art - Students can release their imaginations and express their creativity with art kits.

The Art kit teaches students core artistic techniques and concepts. Fun mixed-media projects are inspired by other cultures and the works of famous artists. With Art Rods students learn the basic of 3D design, sculpting and modeling. Other programs include Life Skills (Finance, Magic) and Health and Fitness including Zumba and Capoera. After school programs are more critical than ever at this time. Nexplore’s programs are already offered weekly at more than 300 educational partners across many different states in the U.S. and the fact that it offers both onsite and virtual learning opportunities makes it uniquely poised to make a contribution right now and in the future. It offers hands-on, playful learning that fully engages students and allows them to develop a lifelong passion for learning. To learn more go to www.nexploreusa.com.
