6.1. Summary This research has been conducted with the objective of developing a pattern language for the interaction with web-based business intelligence applications. This pattern language has been successfully conceived: more than 60 patterns have been developed and organized in the language context. The author is very confident that the solutions as well as their structuring system, the language, are of a high quality and contribute both to the scientific advancement in the area of pattern languages and the practical requirements of interaction designers in the field of business intelligence. In the course of creation, this thesis has experienced two major succeeding challenges: first, during the phase of exploration and examination of the underlying fields, it has become clear, that the process of creating a pattern language has not been documented in the past. This is the case although researchers as well as practitioners actually have undergone this process—which is proved by the availability of several pattern languages. The need for developing such a pattern language creation method is a direct result of this. As all analyzed prior research has neglected to give evidence on its procedures, this method could not be conceived without an elaborate examination of the focus fields and their contexts. For this reason, it has been unclear for four fifth of the period of research, whether the creation of the pattern language would be successful—which has posed the second challenge. However, as already stated, both challenges have been mastered.
