MUSIC PRACTICE BUILDING - P1 Location : Andes University - Bogota, Colombia Year : January - 2017 Architects : Mauricio Berrio - Daniel Sanchez - Felipe Quintero Type of Work : Professional- Architecture Competition Role : Design Team and Drafting Contribution : Localization, axonometrics, 3d and Diagrams The dense Bosque of the west Andes in the city of Bogota and a university campus shaped by the unification of fragments from different times, open spaces and pathways are the setting in which the building is situated.

The project is compound by three separate prisms which configure the open spaces highlighting the existing trees, new vegetation and the community gathering. Furthermore it allows the continuity of the pathways and its visuals towards the mountain range and the sight of the city.

Each block or prism is capped by open sky patios, the mountains and the adjoining landscape crowned by the tree tops. It is a building dedicated to music that offers intimate spaces, tranquility and silence.

HI-TECH HEALTHCARE AND WELLNESS COMPLEX Location : Hanoi, Vietnam Year : July - 2017 Architects : Felix Ehrminger - Felipe Quintero (NQH + TANGE) Type of Work : Professional - Master plan Competition Role : Design Team and Drafting Contribution : Localization, model, axonometrics, 3d and sections TH Group Vietnam built the bases for an architectural competition where well-known firms had to design a master plan for an advanced medical center, a campus of healthcare with a general hospital, E-center, rehabilitation complex and herbal research laboratories.

All facilities are carefully embedded in ample green space, beautiful waterways, linked to each other by walkways and internal roads. Well connected with the Urban grid, to enable perfect emergency treatment, at the same time enclosed and protected by the park to ensure privacy, silence and a wellbeing atmosphere. Customers will experience a retreat in the middle of nature, easy and fast to reach from the Airport or City Center of Hanoi.

LIXIL SHOWROOM COMPETITION Location : Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Year : November- 2017 (Under Construction) Architects : Felix Ehrminger - Van Le - Dai Nong - Felipe Quintero Type of Work : Professional - Refurbishment Competition Role : Design Team and Drafting Contribution : Floorplan layout, axonometrics and 3d.

Busy streets by bikes and cars, the curious eye of the pedestrians passing by in the heart of the city of Saigon, a necessary refurbishment of a single building to vitalize the contiguous sector, a construction with a combination of multiple expressions creates a confusion of functionality to the potential clients.

In order to inaugurate their new showroom in Ho Chi Minh City, Lixil organized a competition for local architects for the renovation of the building, the proposal was to unified the image of a single corporation which has many brands in both exterior and interior, the floating box as a strong concept and the protruding prisms as the secondary image bring together the whole building as one distinguished Trademark.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING - AMONG PARKS Location : 24th Avenue / 54th Street - Bogota, Colombia Year : 3rd year - 2013 Architects : Felipe Quintero Type of Work : Academic- Residential Role : Design Contribution : Solo Project Salitre neighborhood outstands thanks to its strategic location within the city of Bogota, a family environment supported by pocket parks spread out, a large commercial area and governmental buildings, the residential zone connects to downtown through one of the largest roads in Bogota linking to the universities and business district.

The residential complex respects the surrounding context regarding the overall height while creating large recreational terraces, the public space connects the nearby parks through other activities which serves as a community space breaking the fenced cages of its neighbors and becoming a living part of the city, sustainable living compound by flexible micro housing, an affordable option for students and young professionals in search for economic independence.

HUrbE (Ecological Urban Tool) Location : CAN, El Dorado Avenue 50 th to 66th- Bogota, Colombia Year : 1st and 2nd Semester - 2015 Architects : Felipe Quintero - Juan Gomez Type of Work : Academic- Bachelor’s Project Role : Analysis, redaction and design Contribution : Integral part of process and results HUrbE (in Spanish Herramienta Urbana Ecologica) is an urban appraisal which encourages social and ecological sustainability, it promotes new regulations and high standards through an evaluation to improve the collective quality of life and our connection with nature, the document expects to reach planners, architects, developers, investors and government departments such as city planning so they can apply the concepts or strategies of the tool to improve their new or refurbished urban projects or large scale master plans.

The thesis project was to develop the document called HUrbE which would contain the description of what it is, its concepts and strategies, the scoring system and the evaluation format, subsequently applying these concepts and strategies into a master plan, in this specific case, a project based on OMA’s proposal for the CAN national administration center in Bogotá, Colombia.

The approach to solve some of the problems is based on three integral concepts:

URBAN COMPACTNESS

Minimizing the coverage instead of sprawling through suburban neighborhoods, reducing the daily commute to work or to other essential activities, beginning to understand public space as a three dimensional function, and making the car as obsolete as possible through pedestrian and cyclist friendly streets. Growing vertically and horizontally to control our footprint in a smart manner while placing the citizen in the city’s core.

SUSTAINABILITY

Green areas as a network of public space that increases the health and wellbeing of the community, safer bike lanes to enhance the quality of life and to encourage people to use alternative modes of public transportation, urban agriculture to generate a sense of holistic thinking whilst teaching civilians to cultivate and harvest their own food as a valuable knowledge and using renewable energies to gain independence from fossil energy. Sustainability implies a cleaner and healthier lifestyle.

INCLUSIVITY

None of the last items would have any impact if the citizen doesn’t have a sense of belonging to a place, an item of inclusivity is urban education, which teaches people how to take care of their neighborhoods, composting and recycling to reduce our ecological footprint, the use of materials and our own waste; Applying frugality which is based on using the least amount of resources, creating a diverse context to break with unbalanced and segregated communities. Inclusivity is based on cohabitating within a holistic set of mind.

Centralizing the business districts where most people go to work, overpricing the neighborhood making it accessible to just a handful of people or creating large central parks as an exclusive pleasure for a single sector, zoning cities in an inflexible way where residents can’t get their everyday supplies like food, exercise or other types of leisure, diverse activities are imperative to enhance the quality of life.

Ignorance is the root of most problems and this one is no different, the need of urban education is imminent and though most countries now are making an effort to classify their waste through recycling, many citizens don’t know what’s the difference between organic, plastic, paper, metal, glass, etc. there’s not a large categorization of our waste and the recycling centers are small, so the trash ends up in any landfill.

None of the concepts of the tool would have any positive or long term impact if urban education is not spread and teach, establishing these values and embracing a sense of belonging for the places we live in, helping to take care of them and keep them clean, urban education sets the morals to our interaction with spaces and people based on tolerance, care, holistic thinking and collective wellbeing.

Besides almost every item in the tool is graded from 10 to 0 which means that all items are equally significant but some indicators should be more relevant than others. The tool still has a vast space to evolve, for the thesis was also essential that the project would not only be theoretical, so we had to develop the following master plan based on the HUrbE tool.

HUrbE - Master Plan The 26th avenue of Bogota connects the international airport el dorado with downtown, which includes the colonial neighborhood la candelaria, the highest concentration of universities in the city, the business district and most importantly the Andes mountain range, about midway the “CAN� National Administration Center gives place to a 97 hectares complex of government buildings in between the metropolitan park Simon Bolivar and the National University. Currently the site is occupied by a couple of hospitals, a civil plaza, ministries of energy, education and defense, a military base and university campus among other institutional buildings.

The privileged site has an immense potential to become an icon to the city.

HUrbE (Ecological Urban Tool) The surrounding neighborhoods are generally residential varying from mid rises and townhouses with a series of complementary uses and a few pocket parks but rich in green areas compared to most of the city. The metropolitan park Simon Bolivar is the largest park within Bogotá, it’s equipped with the Virgilio Barco library designed by Rogelio Salmona and an extensive lake that exist as a shared green network with the national sport complex and the botanical garden, on the other side of the site the national university campus outstands for its wide open areas and greenery.

The site today known as CAN was selected in 2013 for a master plan competition, OMA joined with Gomez + Castro Architects won with a proposal for a linear park that would connect the park and the university bounded by the institutional buildings.

GREENERY HUrbE’s proposal kept the linear park while making the whole project pedestrian, other linear green spaces function as connectors and buffers of sound and smog, besides applying green terraces throughout different levels of the project.

CIRCULATION OMA’s grid is conserved, within the development pedestrian streets will be exclusive, only shared by bicycles: Cars would park at the basements found in the perimeter, the trolley will be accessible inside the development and in addition the current train will have a station.

USES The iconic building of the center is also kept from OMA’s design, but modified to configure a linked complex of national ministries, a cultural building as the core of the proposal surrounded by residential and office buildings with commercial ground floors.

The appraisal was hard to compare given that they were both proposals in their early stages of concept design and at times wished that the exercise could be applied in an existent project. But working with no limitations to apply the majority of the concepts was rewarding. Even though the project magnitude was very large to achieve a flawless tool and a detailed master plan, we were content with the results and hope to develop more of this project in the future until perhaps someday it can become a pertinent document for the development of the urban fabric.

Year : 2020 Architects : Felipe Quintero, Marianthi Papangelopoulou Type of Work : Academic Role : Research, Drawings and Conversation Tutor : Barry Bergdoll The “Architectures on Display: On the History and Contemporary Approaches to Exhibiting Architecture” theory master class, led by Barry Bergdoll combines a consideration of the history and main theoretical ideas raised by the culture of displaying architecture with an examination of contemporary architecture exhibitions. Participants developed a position related to how architecture exhibitions inscribe knowledge in space.

The personal assignment, together with Marianthi and under the supervision of Barry Bergdoll, was to interview Architect Giovanna Borasi, Director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal, Canada. The interview focused on the exhibition “1973: Sorry, Out of Gas” in 2007, which she personally curated with Mirko Zardini.

ROBOT TEST ISLAND Location : Tokyo, Japan Year : 2020 Architects : Felipe Quintero Type of Work : The Berlage Post-master Academic- Educational Role : Field work, research and design Contribution : Integral part of process and results Tutors : Filip Geerts, Sanne Van Den Breemer, Salomon Frausto Website : https://projectglobal.nl/ Seeking to explore power as crucial factor in the design of the built environment, the Generation looked at energy systems and related objects, from sites of generation to spaces of consumption, from distribution networks to control rooms.

The project proposal is a Robot-centric design in an artificial island. The model is situated in Tokyo bay, it was a decision to make it an artificial island since Japanese Metabolists had such a strong fascination for them. The new island becomes part of the land reclamation of Tokyo and its proximity to Odaiba, where the innovation museum is placed, creates a cyclic feedback between the institution and the robotics test site. If we are headed to a future where a relation between human and machine is closer, why not try to speculate upon its design.

The all circles chair is inspired by the work of artist Patrick S. Doyle, who has dedicated his life on building a series of objects based on sphere and dome structures. I was inspired by the versatility to assign different functions to a single shape. The furniture piece is made by 10 surfaces of plywood which primal shape is the circle, the chair is easily assembled without the help of glue, nails or screws, falling in place by intersecting the pieces.
