INTENTION vs. PERCEPTION The concept intended by the architect may be translated as ambiguous through the architecture and is perceived differently based on individual.

OPPOSITION vs. ASSOCIATION Semiology can be achieved through contrast or by means of built up using metaphors. Over-reliance on either of the two methods might result in an unclear architectural language.

MULTIVALANCE vs. UNIVALENCE There is often a lack of continuity from form, function and technicality that result in a distorted image of what the intended concept was. In some cases, architects may place more emphasis in one area than the other due to cultural or contextual requirements.

Justify the selection.

JUSTIFICATION: INTENTION Tadao Ando created the Church of Light using large amounts of

voids and empty spaces as to him, this signifies a solitude that transcends the user to a spiritual level. However, users have remarked that the abundance of space is eerie, a contrast to what was intended by the architect.

MATERIALITY The widespread use of reinforced concrete removes the building from the distinction of traditional Christian motifs reinforces the point of designing through contradiction. The place of worship is void of ornaments, a stark difference to the traditional architecture of a church, with the crosses void in the east facing wall being the only prominent religious symbol present in the church.

FORM RELATES TO FUNCTION The form of the building reflects the function in its simplicity.

Devoid of ornaments, the L shaped entrance leads to a pure space of worship. It is clear that simplicity, humbleness and purity are elements repeated throughout its form and function.

The simplicity of the architecture emphasizes the concept of sensation and physical experience and brings importance to the internal feeling rather than outward struggles.
