The best things come when we all work together and together, we excel.
With spring bursting through a very gloomy winter its nice to imagine all kinds of new possibilities on the horizon.
This is my new beginning Business Manager at Feilding and District Promotion and our new beginning is a shared local vision that shapes our future together
Together we will work with residents, business owners, and our community groups of Feilding and the wider Manawatū District exploring lots of new and exciting projects that create a shared vision for our patch
It is my absolute privilege to be working in this role but more importantly to recognise the team in the organisation who have been working so hard to deliver Rural Day, the Christmas Carnival & Parade, and business networking events Kathryn, Sarah, Denise and Tania work tirelessly weaving their magic along with the keen eye of our amazing volunteers and business partners to create events that offer all sorts of new possibilities for you and your whanau
The best things come when we all work together and together, we excel If you ’ re looking for a great day out with the whanau in the October school holidays look no further Rural Day on Friday 14 October is a must do and the perfect way end two weeks of school holidays after exploring all the amazing things you can do around the district
If you ’ re anything like me spring is not spring cleaning, it’s more about lots of new projects in and around the house After being waterlogged for so much of the winter my mind is bursting with exciting new garden ideas not sure my family will be as inspired by my choices as I will, but that s the beauty of plans. They are adaptable and often need tweaking, but if it fills your cup go forth and dream the big dreams, you never know you just might inspire those around you as well
Ka kite apopo Jan Harris Business ManagerDespite brewing headwinds, Manawatū District continued to perform well over the year to June 2022.
Supported again by strong employment, high levels of investment and continued global demand for high quality goods produced in the District, GDP increased by 6 3% to reach a total value of $1 48b over the year This compares with economic growth of 0 9% across the New Zealand economy over the same period
Primary industry GDP also declined over the quarter, down 12% on the previous quarter This result was driven by a fall in Mining GDP of 89% but agriculture forestry and fishing GDP also contracted, down 02 on the December quarter 2021 The drag on GDP is explained by reduced volumes with commodity prices for goods produced in the District reaching record highs in the March quarter 2022 Statistics NZ will release June quarter GDP on 15 September

The value of New Zealand exports for dairy and meat products increased by 172% and 190% over the year to July 2022 Prices have been supported by limited global supply as producers both here and across the globe, struggle to produce enough to meet demand
The sector has also been challenged by rising costs, with farm input costs increasing by 133% over the year to June 2022 Increasing costs have been driven by rising fuel prices and increasing fertiliser and feed costs as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine Despite these pressures, the current outlook remains favourable with high commodity prices expected to support our food producers to withstand these challenges over the coming season
There are substantial economic challenges that are and will continue to impact on our community over 2022 and 2023 These factors are discussed in further detail on page 7
According to Statistics New Zealand New Zealand GDP fell by 0 2% in the March quarter compared with the December quarter 2021 The challenges brought about by traffic light restrictions came to the fore alongside continued border restrictions, global and domestic inflation, and tightening monetary policy settings These factors have had an impact on business and consumer confidence

Supporting community and economic wellbeing.
Overall, the structure of the local economy will support economic wellbeing in the District through the challenges of the next few years For one, employment is expected to remain high as the demand for workers continues to exceed the available supply of workers This is both a positive and a negative as high levels of employment will support local households to weather the impact of rising costs High employment will also support spending across the economy, helping our businesses to some extent
On the other side of the equation, businesses have limited access to workers to drive business activity This effect is observed across New Zealand with industry leaders highlighting the impact of limited labour on their ability to do business Access to labour is critically low in the District with the unemployment rate fourth lowest of the 61 Territorial Authority areas within New Zealand
Unemployment hit a record low in the Manawatū District over the year to June 2022, falling to 1.8% alongside a 25.8% decline in the number of workready jobseekers and a 3.0% increase in the number of local residents in employment.
Within New Zealand, continued supply shortages are constraining supply while limited access to labour is driving wage and salary increases The lack of supply of materials and labour within the stretched construction sector is also driving cost increases while increased food production costs and supply challenges are filtering through to our grocery prices
Globally, inflationary pressures are being driven by high fuel and energy costs and continued supply bottlenecks from limited international production resulting in elevated international commodity prices This is in part driven by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with high fuel prices impacting on cost increases across the breadth of the New Zealand economy
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has tightened access to lending and driven up the official cash rate from 025% to 30% in response We are now seeing the impacts of these combined factors with sinking business and household confidence, softening consumer demand, and lower house prices all at a time when living costs and other expenses are rising
The continuation of high employment will support our households and businesses however there is no doubt that times will be tougher than we have seen them in a while Families across our community will have less disposable income to pay for the things they need to support their wellbeing As always the most vulnerable in our community will take the brunt of the impacts of these rising costs
There is light at the end of the tunnel Alongside the strengths within our economy relative to many others, inflation is expected to return to its 30% upper target around March 2024, falling to a more comfortable 20% by March 2025 Prices for renting a home are also expected to soften as the supply of properties to the market increase as a result of lower capital gains
Alongside our community agencies, Council will be keeping a close eye on impacts across our communities to provide support and advocacy where we can
Source: Infometrics
The rising cost of living is a daily challenge for our businesses and households as inflation reached 7 3% over the year to June 2022 Increasing costs are being driven by both domestic and global factors
Snoring can severely impact one ’ s quality of life Snoring may also be associated with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) a more serious condition that can have links with hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even increased risk of motor vehicle accidents
If you are struggling with using a CPAP machine, the evidence shows that many patients find it easier to tolerate an Oral Appliance with better results in reducing OSA
Our dentist Frederik Dean has completed further education in this specialised area of dentistry. He can assess your condition and provide a custom Oral Appliance to help you (and your family !) get the rest and refreshing sleep we all need.
The Oral Appliance comprises of two separate sliding appliances (each like a thin mouthguard) that cover upper and lower teeth This combination holds the jaw forward to open the blocked airway passage, thereby reducing snoring
Our Oral Appliance is made of 3D printed nylon far superior to the older acrylic / plastic materials that many appliances are still made of

Qwerky Corner’s Suzanne Keppel has been selling online via Trade Me, based from home, for 15 years. That all changed when she fell in love with Feilding and a lovely building in the CBD came up for sale.
“I'm loving being based in a store meeting my customers engaging with them just helps my understanding and learning on such broad subjects as NZ painting photography books pottery glassware Māori carvings and craft, jewellery, antique and mid century furniture
I buy from Auction houses up and down New Zealand Having lived in Auckland and Wellington, means most of my stock comes from the main centres, but frequent North and South Island trips means often picking up items from Hamilton Tauranga Christchurch and Nelson too
I love the town it's centre and the community are making me feel so welcome I was delighted to receive the Making Feilding Beautiful award for the work my partner, Terry Gane, has done on painting and upgrading the lovely old building that many remember as a dairy in years gone by ”
Suzanne's interest in home decor items came from studying Interior Design for three years in Auckland at the Nanette Cameron School of Interior Design before going on to study at the Lois Perry Art Today Programme at the Te Tuhi Art centre in East Auckland as well as conducting tours at Auckland Art Gallery This was followed by seven years in Wellington before opening the Feilding store
“Throughout these years I have developed a Trade Me network up and down the country, all accounts can be found via my website Prices are always cheaper in the Feilding store and any of my Trade Me listings can be brought into Feilding for collection in a matter of days

The Strahans bagged a winner’s prize pool of $20,000, including $10,000 cash and the same value in products from sponsors
Their diverse lamb and beef production business at Kiwitea is achieving production of more than 700kg/ha of carcase weight off their finishing area A cropping component in their business also spreads the risk of farmgate price volatility and adds to the success of their pasture renewal programme
Ian Strahan says winning the top prize was unexpected and humbling
“We were really surprised to hear our names called out as the winners, because we hadn t expected to get past the first round of judging let alone win the Award The judging was a great exercise for us because we took a good look at everything we ’ re doing here It’s great to know that our goals and results line up with our peers in the sector too ”
Runners up for 2022 were Taihape hill country farmers Derek and Leanne White who received $2000 cash
One of the award judges Sean Stafford says the Strahan’s’business is a brilliant example of how sustainable farming principles can lead to high profit outcomes “They operate a simple farm system which is uniquely structured to capture market opportunities There is high attention to detail and they make great use of data and tools to achieve excellent performance outcomes "
This Award is all about excellence in farming particularly red meat production, and we were delighted with the quality of all the entries for our inaugural year, ” says awards organiser Paul Olsen
A field day is to be held at the Strahan’s property next month You can learn more on Facebook @CDRedMeatFarmBusinessoftheYear
Rural and Lifestyle Sales Ltd started in 2012 and found they rather quickly outgrew their offices at the Agribusiness Centre on Weld Street.
They thought they would be there for years, but with a growing team, space being tight and no room to expand the decision was made to look for new premises
The old power board building was for sale or lease on the corner of Stafford and Bowen Street With a large car park and storage shed the decision was made to purchase it
With an excellent vendor and the support of Westpac, the deal was done. The building was brought up to code and internal renovations were undertaken working in the evenings through to the small hours and weekends Newly converted to two separate office spaces with a new shared kitchen and toilet facilities, the team moved in in February 2014
A commercial tenant was found for the remaining offices and once again the building was full of life Owners Richard Anderson and Robert Dabb continued to grow the business operating in the lower north Island specialising in farm and lifestyle sales with the residential side added to the business in 2020
A redesign of their brand and collateral made it more modern and adaptable to the three areas of the business rural, lifestyle and residential
"Fast approaching our 10th birthday we are proud to say that we have created a very professional business. We get up in the morning and get going We take a long term approach which is a testament to the number of residential and lifestyle subdivisions we are involved in and the relationships we have with our farming clients and rural professionals
We don’t go out and compete on fees with listing a property, but clients know they'll get good old fashion down to earth service with a smile "

By the time you’ve picked this up to read it, it’s likely that we’ll have a new council in place. But if by chance you’re reading this and you have time to vote, we strongly encourage you to do so. If you’ve still got time to vote, check out the information in the side box on how to get your vote in on time.
You might have already seen our Make Your Mark on Manawatū branding around town and on social media, and you might be wondering what it’s all about?
The aim of this years election campaign is to get people who are eligible to vote to be more future focused and thinking not just about themselves, but also the next generation that is coming through
But it’s not just about voting, it’s about engaging in local government during planning, consultations and engagements which help shape the future of our district
To help spark conversations about the breadth of work Council is involved with, we created some Whānau conversation cards which provide a range of questions and prompts designed to get people thinking about what they want to see in the Manawatū District
An electronic version of the pack can be downloaded from our website
Also on our website is our What’s in it for me? tool, which can get you thinking about what you value in our community and then find out more about the influence council can have on those things It could be nature and spending time with whānau, district planning or other big issues such as climate change affordable housing and how we can facilitate the economic and residential growth of our district
This tool is available even after the elections are completed and will be updated regularly with information of projects as they progress
The voting period closes on Saturday 8 October, and you’ll be able to find out more information on the candidates on our website
Voting packs were mailed to residents that are enrolled from 16 September. Simply fill out the form provided in your voting pack, seal it in the return envelope provided and pop it in your closest post box for free. Or, you can drop it into our Manchester Street offices by 12:00pm on Saturday 8 October
If you have any questions about any of the above, then please feel free to contact us at Council on 06 323 0000 or email us elections@mdc.govt.nz and we’ll be able to assist you.
Making old things new again for 50 years - now in our new location.
Since 1972 Manchester House Opshop has been providing Good used clothes while raising money to pay for social services for the people of Feilding.
Making old things new again is our shops Motto, and this is certainly what has happened to our shop
Moving from one side of Fergusson street to 96 Fergusson street has meant a complete makeover with a fresh and modern shop which will appeal to many
This is been made possible by the generosity of our Feilding community and the hard work of staff and volunteers
With a spacious new building we are open to receiving larger donations at the back of the shop with large roller doors accessing Eyre St car park making this a game changer in how we receive donations!
Wide windows allow natural light into the shop and provide an up market street appeal for displaying our beautiful clothes as well as house hold goods and decor items
I have to say it’s an absolute pleasure to come to work and create something new and exciting for our loyal customers and frequent op shoppers!
With celebrating our fiftieth anniversary this year it’s been a pleasure to meet the needs of those who are looking at ways to save money for their families While this is a big part of the business, op shopping has become a trendy way to find those exclusive brands and bargains
Thank you Feilding we can’t wait to grow and support more of what we do in the community. Pick ups and donations welcome.
regards Megan Gowan
The dairy farm has been certified organic with Asurequality NZ to export standard USDA NOP for the past 15 years and has fantastic views of the Tararua and Ruahine ranges with fabulous sunrises to take in
It is ideally situated 10 minutes west of Palmerston North and 10 minutes south of Feilding For David, as caretaker of the land, there is no use of synthetics while increasing pasture diversity for his herd of 120 Jersey and Friesian cows
David produces milk for a large processor while his partner Teresa Yee looks after all the retail product from the farm In her past experience as a restaurateur and career foodie, she has long been an advocate for organics and nutrient dense food and feels people need to have more access to this Three oaks’ MPI registered RAW MILK can be purchased from the Farmgate & Collection Depots in the lower North Island. Their Depot Partners take care in managing the handover of ‘Rural’ raw milk from the Depot and are equally committed to servicing the access of Raw Milk to everyone The online store allows you to Click & Collect your milk at our Collection Depots in Manawatu, Kapiti and Lower Hutt & Upper Hutt with a weekly delivery to Wairarapa residents also
Three oaks organic has a regular stall at the Feilding Market on Fridays Paraparaumu beach market and Hokowhitu market in spring and summer where Teresa promotes their Pasteurised whole milk
Raw milk and Yoghurt products and spends much of her time at the markets promoting the accessibility of good Kai from the Manawatū region
Try something new for yourself or for someone else as a gift learn to fly!
Feilding Aviation's trial flights will give you a taste of flying in the commanding seat.
Dream of taking to the skies? Perhaps you’d just like to take in the breath taking scenery of the Manawatū
Feilding Aviation is a new venture at Feilding Aerodrome and is under the direction of Apurva Bhatia(owner) and Sutikshan Sharma both highly qualified Flight Instructors
They offer courses to help start flying careers, as a private pilot or commercial pilot They are professionals in what they do and train people to the highest standards and work closely with Massey Flight School While you can start to learn to fly at any age, to fly solo you must be 16 years old
People think that it is really hard to get into flying but it’s not Mayor Helen Worboys can vouch for that! She took to the classroom under the guidance of Sutikshan, then took the controls and to the skies, saying that it was a fantastic experience and a positive step in reintroducing general aviation flight training into the greater Manawatū
The 20 minute Trial Flight is surprisingly cheap at $99 The trial flight includes a hands on aircraft orientation, education, and preflight demonstration, a guided lesson on how to taxi, take off, and fly the aircraft and learn the effects of controls
You will hold the controls and take your first lesson under the guidance of your instructor
Post Covid 19, aviation faces a global pilot shortage What they re expecting, is all the senior flight instructors will get airline jobs to fill the gap, so Feilding Aviation are running instructor courses too
Most of the instructors around here and all the senior instructors in Whanganui were taught by Apurva, she has a great record.
