Putai Ngahere Domain or Vinegar Hill, as it is mostly known, is one of the region’s most popular and spectacular picnic and camping reserves, located alongside the majestic Rangitīkei River, where a mighty 300 year old totara tree looks over the grounds as a guardian.

The bush entrance to this 30.84 reserve features giant redwood, totara and other native species. The reserve provides for a range of recreation activities including swimming, fishing, white-water rafting and canoeing.

It is a popular holiday camping spot for families and large groups with three main camping areas but people can camp where they wish. There are cold showers and flushing toilets available but no BBQ's.

Flat, grassy, non-powered sites with plenty of tree shelter border the river, which has great swimming holes.

Here you will find relaxed camping at its very best.

The majestic Rangitikei River snakes its way along the western boundary of the Manawatū District’ s northern reaches from high up on the central plateau down to Tangimoana Beach where its spills into the Tasman Sea.

It has cut spectacular gorges on its path, cliffs up to 200 metres high provide dramatic backdrops to a wide range of rapids and pools. Most of these rapids are Grade 2, ideal for family rafting adventures and an excellent learning ground for Whitewater Kayaking.

The Rangitikei River also features a section of Grade 5 White-water, the best half day or two day white-water trip in the world! More water adventures are well worth exploring at Awastone.co.nz.
