PRACTICE:

Keeping subdivisions in mind, practice at 3 different BPM markers either playing music you’re currently practicing or to the grooves played in example videos. Be sure to record yourself so that you can listen back and make adjustments where needed.

Practice playing through different grooves with a metronome. You can either play through the grooves from example videos or make up your own groove. Be sure to record yourself so that you can listen back for accuracy and consistency with your feel and timing.

Go and listen to the songs you’re working on but listen through the lens of telling a story.

PRACTICE:

Practice playing through the two examples or play through a song you’ve been practicing and experiment with catching different hits and vocal moments throughout the record. Always record yourself so that you can listen back and hear your progress.

Play the record. Not your interpretation of the record - but the record.

This comes by listening and studying the details of not only what’s being played but how it’s being played.

The Foster Rule of Five is a fast track technique that I’ve established to learn music as quickly and efficiently as possible. The process requires listening through a song I need to learn a minimum of five times. It’s important to minimize all distractions in order to really benefit from this process.

1st Listen: Fresh Pass Listen as a consumer and become one with the song.

2nd Listen: Formatting Here is where you’re identifying the form of the song and taking mental notes of where the changes happen. Ask yourself: How many bars are in each section?

3rd Listen: Drum Pattern “If you can sing it, you can play it” Here’s where you tap into your inner Doug E Fresh. Beatboxing your way through learning music when you can’t immediately get behind a kit is a super convenient and effective way to internalize and remember music.

4th Listen: Band Parts Familiarize yourself with what other instruments are playing around the drum part so that you can better identify the purpose of your position and approach when playing.

5th Listen: Vocals Here’s where you lock into the vocal elements of the song and your phrasing and placement skills become most valuable. Listen for space that you might need to fill but also for space that needs to be left alone.

PRO TIP: Broaden your spectrum of music.

When you’re listening, you’re always learning. Listening to a variety of music from different genres and eras and becoming aware of what makes each sound unique to its genre and era will help you quickly identify and execute the feel needed for the music you’re learning.

This is the backbone of the Feel Over Flash brand and the most important concept to understand for career longevity. While “flash” represents what gets you the gig (look good, sound good etc.), “feel” represents what keeps you on the gig and gets you booked on other opportunities down the road. Who you are and how you show up outside of your playing is your secret sauce. It can’t be duplicated, it’s unique to you and is the spirit that shows through your playing that makes you undeniable.
