In Jeremiah 29 we find: “For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” God has held our past and holds our present and our forever. We lifted up our graduates in worship and know that they are preparing for changes in their lives that are filled with hopeful expectation and even some worry and trepidation. We say farewell to Pastor Chris and in the midst of giving thanks for her ministry here we know that she too has hopeful expectations as to where God will lead her and yet I am sure faces concern at beginning something new. As a congregation we also know that First English will be different and we will face new challenges and decisions as to how we are to be staffed to accomplish the mission that we have been given. However, even with uncertainty we view the future with hope. Alexander Pope wrote, “Hope springs eternal in the human breast.” I don’t know if he had this verse from Jeremiah in mind when he wrote these words but it is a truth that is born out of God’s care for His children and the continual outpouring of grace that we experience in this world. Although we face changes and challenges and we don’t know what is waiting for us tomorrow or even around the next corner, we have hope. Hope that God will be with us in whatever we face, hope that we will overcome the obstacles that stand in our way, hope that we will have a tomorrow, a future, a forever. Hope that is not founded upon whimsy or merely human idealism but upon the Word, upon the Solid Rock, upon the God who has created us, redeemed us and sustained us. God has plans for us. God has given us one to another in the fellowship of the body of Christ and has set before us the mission that is before us. God has called us to be a people of hope, a people that shines the light of Christ into the world, a people who know that the challenges we face are no match for the power of the One who sends us out. God will work in us His mighty deeds and we will continue to grow in faith, in love toward each other and in mission to the world. This summer and fall we will look at the mission we have been called to and how we can fulfill the plans that God has for us. We will seek to have every member involved in accomplishing the mission we have been given and growing in faith through worship, Scriptural studies and in fellowship. And as the risen people of God we will face the day and the future with hope. Yours In Christ<><

The gifts! The pastor’s stole is a work of art – stunning! I will wear it often. We are planning our trip made possible by the generous gift of a stay at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac which has been on our “to do” list for some time. We are looking forward to enjoying some restful time on the Island.

Sunday Morning Bible Study THURSDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY Sunday School will resume in September.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in our Thursday morning Bible study. We will begin again in the fall and will start by looking at the formation of the Bible. “The purpose of the whole Scripture is this: to teach, reprove, correct, and train in righteousness, so that the man of God may be perfect for every good work, as Paul says in 2 Timothy 3:1617. Those who fail to observe this purpose, even if they create the impression of erudition among the unlettered by their divinations, nevertheless are ignorant of the true essence of Scripture.” Lectures on the Song of Solomon (Luther’s Works 15:194) WOMEN’S CIRCLE BIBLE STUDY

Grace Circle - Fourth Monday at 7:00 p.m. Peace Circle - First Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Faith Circle - First Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.

BOARD OF SOCIAL ACTION Pump Up the Pantry Taken a peek at our pantry lately? The shelves are pretty bare. That’s good news and bad news. The good news is we have been able to help Salem Lutheran (down from St. John) with their pantry, fulfill the needs of our “regulars” – people who come for food monthly – and still help Life Builders with a delivery of food (April 28) for their Senior Saturday (April 30), where seniors come and shop for basics. The bad news is we can’t continue this outreach without ongoing support, and we’d like to supplement Salem’s pantry more, not less in the future. To all the anonymous pantry angels, who do, routinely, drop off food: THANK YOU! This note is directed to everyone else. And we’re not talking bags and bags of food. If each of us of gave a can or two of soup or vegetables or fruit or tuna, etc., our shelves would be full in no time! If you don’t like “lugging” groceries to church, consider writing a small check ($5 - $10) to FELC pantry or giving a cash donation to Sue in the office and we’ll do the shopping. Remember the loaves and the fish…a little goes a long way.

(See the pantry list for ideas.) Thank you. Board of Social Action
