OCTOBER 2019

First English Ev. Lutheran Church

First English Lutheran Church

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The night before my father died, my sister and I were talking about some of the memories we had of our Dad. My Dad was not the best father and I don’t have a lot of memories and many of them are not positive. As we shared some stories we also talked about his life and that his childhood was not very good either. He became a husband and father who didn’t know how to develop a relationship with his family and who chose alcohol as a way of coping with the world around him. He did care about his family and this was primarily seen in his changing the oil or waxing the car or buying pizza for dinner on a Saturday night. I did not have a great relationship with my Dad, not the one that I wanted, and although I did not appreciate many of the ways he treated me or our family, I loved him. Quite a few years ago, my Dad and I had a conversation about him as a father and about me as a son. During this conversation, my Dad apologized for how he had treated me and for what he had done wrong and my dad heard me say I forgave him. It meant a lot to me to hear him say what he said and it was important for him to hear that I forgave him and that I loved him. I am glad we were able to have that conversation even though it was a number years after I had moved out. As I think about my Dad, I am reminded that it is never too late to say you’re sorry, it is never too late to forgive those who have wronged you, and if you want to tell the people you love that you love them, now is the time. As well, as I think about my Dad, I think about my Father in heaven. I know that I have fallen far short of being the perfect child, and yet, knowing all that I have done wrong he has forgiven me and in the midst of all my less than ideal choices, He loves me. I give thanks to God for my Dad and for God’s gracious love and mercy for him and for me. And I ask God for the strength and wisdom to love and forgive as He has done for me and to take advantage of the opportunities to forgive and be forgiven and share this love with those around me. God’s peace and strength to love and forgive be with you. YIC<><

N O T E S F R O M R E N ATA Have you heard about‌

Youth Trips 2020 For 6th-12th graders Jan 17-19 at Michindoh $65 each due Dec 22

For 9th-12th graders Feb 7-9 in Lansing

What is Spark Church?

$95 each due Nov 17

Spark Church is where kids learn about the bible. Kids explore the same Sunday readings as the adults, but at their own level.

Why Spark Church instead of Sunday School? Spark Church is not separate from worship, it is part of worship. Children are a vital part of the congregation, and should not be made to feel separate from it. Spark Church allows children to worship with their families, learn about the bible, and then continue learning at home.

Ok... so how does it work?

SUMMER SERVICE in PUERTO RICO or CHATTANOOGA! For 8th-12th graders June dates TBD $150 each due Oct 20

Families start in the sanctuary together with their big church family (aka, the whole congregation). Soon, Pastor will welcome the kids forward to share a message with them, then invite them upstairs for Spark Church. Kids will rejoin their families soon after the sermon concludes. Currently, Spark Church is only offered during 9:30 worship.

WEDNESDAYS 5:30-7:00pm Youth Group (for 9th-12th grade)

Who can attend? Spark Church is designed for kids in preschool through 5th grade. Younger children may also attend, but we ask that a parent/guardian comes with them. We also encourage a parent/guardian to attend with their special needs child, at least for the first few sessions..

Come any week and get free TMP next week!

6:30-8:00pm Confirmation (for 6th-8th grade)

How can families take the learning home? We distribute "Family Pages" with fun and easy biblebased activities to do at home. More resources will be made available in 2019, as we continue to hone the Spark Church experience.

Still have questions? Please contact Renata Conger, who prayerfully runs all children & youth ministries at First English, if you want to know more. renata@feelc.org

ID YOUKNOW?? Flowers may be purchased and placed on the main altar by anyone for Sunday worship services. You may honor someone's birthday or anniversary, or place them in memory of a loved one. A notice will be placed in the bulletin informing the congregation for whom the flowers are placed. Check for available dates on the sign-up sheet, located in the church office or in the Lounge on Sundays. Costs of the flowers are $19.00 per side or $38.00 for both sides, checks payable to FELC Altar Guild. Placement of flowers for the side altar is also available if the main altar is fully reserved.

The price of a niche is $1,800.00 plus the cost of the urn, the engraving of the marble front and shipping. The niche holds two urns. If you are interested in purchasing a niche, please contact the church office.

“The Board of Evangelism is excited about engaging more members in our greeters ministry. So we are asking each of you to sign up for one Sunday (or more if you like) during the year to greet members before the 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services. What does this look like? You will come about 15 minutes early to greet in the gathering area those before the 9:30 service, stay for the 9:30 a.m. service, and then greet those coming for the 11:00 a.m. service. It will only take about a half hour of your time to welcome our members and visitors for one Sunday out of the year. A smile, a friendly hello, or a hand shake are the only skills required! A list of dates, starting in September, will be provided. Please include your name and a method of reaching you. If for some reason you can’t make the date you signed up for you can easily switch. Your generosity in serving is greatly appreciated. 11

The 125th Anniversary of First English is only two years away! Now's the time to start planning. In the meantime, even if you don't want to be on the committee, please search for church related photographs or memorabilia. Most items can probably be scanned and returned to you.

THRIVENT CHOICE DOLLARS We continue to receive your “Thrivent Choice Dollars” gifts! Thank you to all of our members who have directed their “Thrivent Choice Dollars” to support the mission and ministry of First English. Over $2,000.00 was donated last year to First English through this program. If you are a Thrivent policy holder you are eligible to also direct your support to First English. The rules have changed a bit in that now the gifting of the “Thrivent Choice Dollars” must be done annually.
