Le hasard m’a bien gâté le jour ou j’ai rencontré Philippe Vermeulen pour la première fois au marché couvert de Saint-Cloud. Là, il exposait ses premières toiles dans la vitrine réfrigérée d’une boucherie. Ce qui me frappa et me séduisit immédiatement, ce fut cet heureux mélange de poésie, d’humour et de réalisme qui faisait vivre ses toiles.Alors jeune galeriste, j’étais à la recherche d’artistes avec lesquels il serait possible d’établir une collaboration à long terme. Quelques jours plus tard, nous décidions de faire équipe pour le meilleur et pour le pire. Plus de dix ans après, quelques voyages et de nombreux vernissages, nos liens d’amitié se sont resserrés, notre collaboration dure toujours et le travail qu’il nous présente aujourd’hui est un véritable aboutissement. Fifax a tout peint, des ciels immenses, des ports, des bateaux en partance, des engins volants, les toits en zinc de Paris. Tout doucement, inconsciemment ou non, il se préparait à la rencontre avec La ville par excellence, NEW-YORK city. C’est donc une partie de ses travaux sur cette ville que nous présenterons dans notre galerie et dans cet ouvrage. Il est temps maintenant d’affronter le grand vertige, un New York à couper le souffle que l’artiste a su humaniser en communiquant une émotion inégalable dans chacune de ses compositions. It was by pure chance that I had the good fortune of meeting Philippe Vermeulen for the first time in he in-door market of Saint Cloud; where he was exhibiting some of his early works in the frigerated display window of a butcher's shop. What struck me immediately was the lighthearted poetic mixture of humor and reality that brought his works to life. As a young Art gallery owner I was in search of an Artist with whom I could establish a long lasting collaboration. A few days later we decided to team up; for better or for worse. Now more than ten years later, with several trips taken together and numerous openings, our friendship has grown stronger, our collaboration continues, and the work that Fifax has presented to us today is truly an accomplishment. Fifax has painted everything: skylines, ports, sea-bound ships, flying objects, and the zinc-covered rooftop of Paris. Slowly but surely, conscious or not he was preparing himself for the encounter with the one and only New York City. It is the collection of his New York series that we want to share with you today in our gallery and in the catalog. It is now time to face the dizzy heights of the breath taking New York that the Artist humanized so well by communicating in his composition the vulnerability of every passing moment. Ariel Sibony

"Je connais Fifax d'avant sa vocation de peintre car il s'agit bien d'une vocation. Je suis de ceux qui ont eu le privilège de feuilleter ses carnets dans lesquels depuis l'enfance il croquait, avec la même gourmandise que d'autres du chocolat, les images sorties de son imagination : voitures volantes, grues et phares rêvés crevant les nuages... Ses premières toiles comme pour exorciser son désir d'élévation représentèrent le terre à terre : appartements parisiens à l'ancienne, plats paysages du Nord, puis première étape vers les sommets, les toits de Paris. L'ascension avait commencé et ce peintre-voyageur finit par poser ses pinceaux là où ses rêves pouvaient enfin prendre forme : New York. Et depuis dix ans, Fifax nous livre Son New York. Dix années et de nombreux séjours à rechercher de nouveaux angles de perception, à traquer la réalité et surtout l'irréalité de cette ville inouïe qu'il réinvente à son gré. J'aime à l'imaginer au coucher ou au lever du soleil sur le toit d'un building, seul, s'imprégnant des lumières et des sons de cette ville qu'il domine et tentera ensuite de dompter sur la toile blanche. De quelques coups de pinceau il rajoute vingt étages à l'Empire State building pour obtenir un meilleur effet d'ombre ou de lumière, invente ses propres perspectives pour re-créer et s'approprier cette ville qui le fascine. C'est l'ensemble de ce travail ou plutôt la somme de ses plaisirs, car Fifax prend autant de joie à peindre New York que nous en prenons à entrer dans ses toiles, son univers, que ce livre vous propose aujourd'hui. Comme moi qui continue de croquer du chocolat avec la même avidité qu'à l'enfance, dégustez ce carré de New York que nous offre Fifax." Pierre Guimbard.

I met Fifax well before his vocation as a painter, because that is what it is, a vocation. I was one of the privileged few who had the pleasure of flipping through the sketch pads that had dabbled in ever since he was a child with the same eagerness that other have before a box of chocolates. The images come straight out of his imagination: flying objects, cranes, lighthouses piercing the sky... His first works was some sort of exorcism of his desire to elevate and represented the concrete: old Parisian apartment buildings, flat northern landscapes, followed by his ascension towards the heights of, the Parisian skyline. The ascension had began and the globetrotting painter laid his paintbrushes down where his dreams could finally take form, New York. After ten years Fifax has shared with us his New York. ten years and many visits later in search of the different facets, points of view and moreover in discovery of the secret of this extraordinary city that he has recreated according to his will. I love to imagine him at sunrise or sunset, alone on the top of the roof of a high-rise soaking in the rays of the sunlight and absorbing the sounds of the city which he would later attempt to dominate and tame onto his white canvas. With just a few strokes his paint brush he would add several stories to the Empire State building in order to attain the best shadow effect or light, inventing his own perspectives in his endeavor to become fusion with the city that has always fascinated him, and to whom he has he has already consecrated the past ten years of his life as an artist. It is with all these works or more with immense satisfaction, because Fifax experiences as much joy in painting New York as we get in visiting it through his oeuvres, his universe then what this catalog is proposing today. Like me, as I continue to eat chocolate with the same eagerness as I did when was a child, I would like to invite you to take a bite out of Fifax' New York.
