The FDNY officially launched a new training program, “Control the Bleed,” in an effort to provide bystanders with the skills and knowledge needed to respond effectively when faced with life-threatening bleeding.

The announcement was made Nov. 18 at the NYCHA Van Dyke Community Center in Brooklyn. The new public education and training initiative will be implemented through the Department’s CPR Unit.

“‘Control the Bleed’ is a training program that is meant to offer regular New Yorkers the skills to help them help their neighbors in an emergency,”

FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said. “By teaching lifesaving skills, we’re ensuring that everyday citizens can respond with confidence when

The FDNY is sounding the alarm following a series of fatal fires in November. All eight claimed the lives of elderly New Yorkers. The Department released a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) on Nov. 26, urging all New Yorkers to take immediate steps to protect themselves and their loved ones.

“These incidents are painful reminders of how quickly a small hazard can become a life-threatening emergency,” FDNY Chief Fire Marshal Daniel Flynn said. “If you or someone you love is elderly, having a clear, simple and practiced escape plan can make all the difference in getting out safely.”

The FDNY urges all New Yorkers to talk to people in their lives, especially those who may need extra support or who are living alone, and walk through the escape plan together. Make sure they know two ways out of every room and that pathways remain free of clutter. Here are other winter safety tips:

• Never overload extension cords or power strips.

• Do NOT use extension cords permanently. They are only for temporary use.

• Do NOT plug large appliances into extension cords.

• Never sleep with a space heater running.

• Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from a space heater.

• Don’t smoke in bed or when you’re feeling drowsy.

• Never leave cooking food unattended. For more fire safety tips, go to FDNYSmart.org or scan the QR code on Page 1. The Department’s PSA program is made possible in part with support from the FDNY Foundation, the official nonprofit organization of the Department.

MEET CAPTAIN ABDELRAHMAN ABDELAZIZ, DIVISION 11

Captain Abdelrahman Abdelaziz is assigned to Division 11 and serves as the executive officer for the Chief of Department. At the time of his interview for the We Are FDNY campaign, he was a lieutenant in Squad 18. To read his full interview, scan the QR code below.

What is your name and title, and how long have you worked at the FDNY? Where are you currently assigned, and what are your work-related responsibilities?

My name is Captain Abdel Aziz, which is short for Abdelrahman Abdelaziz. I started with FDNY in 2002, first as an EMS for two and a half years. I joined Fire Operations in 2005.

Can you share one of your most memorable moments while working at the FDNY?

When I was EMT, delivering my first baby was a big deal. So far, I’ve delivered six—all girls—which is awesome, I think. As a firefighter, my first fire, I still vividly remember. It was a Wednesday around 5:50 p.m., and it was around 100 degrees. I didn’t know what I was doing, but it worked out, and I was like, “This is the best job in the world.”

What does We Are FDNY mean to you?

Whenever you look at the campaign poster, it’s awesome to see the different positions in the Fire Department because it’s not just firefighters, EMTs and paramedics. There’s a lot of civilians and units behind the scenes that sometimes we forget about who are very vital to our job. I also like to see the diversity on the job because the job has changed in the last 20 years, and I believe the more different ideas you get, the stronger it makes us as a department.

What is your superpower (best quality or skill)?

My biggest superpower is caring about the people that I work with and the public we serve every day. I’m very protective of my people, making sure they are taken care of.

How does your role support the public safety mission of the FDNY?

We’re always training. We’re always trying to be ever more ready for that emergency, fire, every time we go out the door. I always wear my gear, and I try to put myself in the best position to help and protect the public. n
