What Key Club Means John Martin, Barron Collier High School Secretary

The Key Club chapter at my school has allowed me to serve my community while having fun with my friends at numerous events. Unlike a traditional community service club, Key Club gives me the ability to help many different types and communities of people in my neighborhood. I have made sandwiches and served food for the less unfortunate, made dog toys for sheltered pets, and written letters to veterans. The most memorable event I participated in was shopping for a Habitat for Humanity family's Thanksgiving Dinner. I got to work with an adult Kiwanis member, who I do this activity with year after year, shopping around a local grocery store for the holiday staples. We load the food into the car a tat community to give the family their meal. The reactions on their faces a this event is one I look forward to attending every year. I would never get activity like those that Key Club affords me. The club helps me to see m light and see how other families live their lives, an important experience This is my third year in Key Club, and every year has been filled with new joined when a few of my friends told me there was a club at my school d teer hours and helping out the community. executive comm EXECUTIVE COMM Stara D’Haiti District Governor Greetings Leaders of the Mighty, Mighty Florida District, I hope all is well in school, life, and Key Club. It was a pleasure seeing a few of you at the KCKCs (Key Club Kick-off Conference) I attended these past few months. In the upcoming months, the District Board will be planning much in regards to DCON 2020. This year’s 82nd annual Florida DCON theme is… drum roll please.

Timeless Tales of Service! Our magical theme will highlight a sense of leadership through working to positively impact the world as told through your community service stories. I hope to see many of you from April 2-5 at DCON. Additionally, we are also continuing in our work towards our membership goals as a district. As the school year continues, I encourage you to reach for your goals. Make sure you’re on the right track with the objectives your club has planned. Represent Key Club at club expos and open houses. Utilize this year as an opportunity for membership development; recruit as many members as you can!

Lastly, I encourage you all to participate in my Governor’s Project Generation Green. It is an environmental-based initiative to promote the well-being of our planet through service, advocacy, and action. Keep an eye out on our social media for more information, especially for Governor’s Project week: January 12-18! As you complete for service projects, meetings, and other events, please send pictures and videos to the Marketing and Public Relations Committee (marketing@floridakeyclub.org). We would love to use them for promotion. Other than that, I hope you all had an amazing fall and spooky season, let’s ring in the holidays (winter is the best season, period, do not argue with me on this one)!

Now that dues have started coming in, one of the most important parts of my job has begun. I have many goals for our year, and I need your help to achieve them. We all win when we plan the events ahead of time, budget our income and expenses, and prepare for our FLOF applications. I hope everything’s been well! I’m super excited to bring you the 2019 November-December issue of The Sunshine Source, our District’s official bi-monthly newsmagazine. Being your District Editor for the past few months has brought me nothing but joy and honor. Seeing all the amazing work you all do, whether it’s on social media or through club newsletters, I could not be more proud. As the holiday season approaches, I encourage you to take this time to rest and enjoy spending time with your family and friends. You deserve a break!

Club Editors, as always, I encourage you to create newsletters for your clubs! They are a fantastic way to keep members informed and engaged. If you do create newsletters, please be sure to send them to me as I love seeing all the amazing work being done in our district. District Secretary Hello Leaders of the Mighty, Mighty Florida District! Holiday season is in full swing, and service is calling!

Through various forms of media, I have seen so much of the incredible service you have all been performing, and I can’t wait to see what else you accomplish throughout this year! Be sure to update, or submit, your Officer Information Forms. As you know, communication is a vital KEY to our performance as a District. As a reminder, Pride Reports are due the 10th of every month. The February 2020 Pride Report is due March 7, 2020. Also, any updates to previously submitted Pride Reports must be submitted by March 5, 2020.

The Eliminate Project is a partnership between Kiwanis International and UNICEF that works to help eradicate Maternal Neonatal Tetanus (MNT) worldwide. MNT is a deadly disease that steals the lives of 35,040 babies annually along with a significant number of women. That is approximately 1 life every 15 minutes. Babies infected with maternal neonatal tetanus face repetitive painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. You as Key Clubbers can continue to save the lives of others by fundraising with on your own and with your clubs. This fatal disease still exists in 13 countries today, but with the help of Key Club International, we are fighting MNT together to eliminate it for good. In 2015, the Florida District of Key Club International pledged to raise $250,000 for The Eliminate Project. We are now approaching our last year with $68,219.19 left to raise as of May. Therefore, it is critical that we do not wait, but ELIMINATE.

nds Spotlight "Engaging in several volunteering opportunities, St. Ignatius Key Club remains steadfast in their pursuit to make a positive impact on their community. We began the year with creating a Hurricane Dorian relief fund, collecting non-perishable goods and donations to do our best to help those in the Bahamas suffering the devasting effects of the natural disaster. We also further had the opportunity to aid with the Special Olympics and our annual school play—"Matilda". Along with donating to various charities, we partook in a beach clean up to go beyond our social impact and better our environment. St. Ignatius Key Club remains active to achieve their holistic objects by selling cards and snow cones and doing rounds of tombola at the Christmas Bazaar on the 23rd of November." —St. Ignatius Key Club
