Happy new year Florida Key Club! I am just as ecstatic to start serving in 2019 as you are. This past year we have made impacts all over the state, country and world.

I encourage you to reflect on all the positivity you have spread in your communities. As you recollect all of the projects you have accomplished, all of the service you have selflessly given, picture that on a scale of over 22,000 members. That is a lot of service right? Never forget the vast impact we have in the world, we may be students, but more so we are world changers!

Looking forward, our annual District Education and Leadership Conference will be coming up shortly. That means it is time to start considering running for higher office, whether it be Lieutenant Governor, District Executive Officer or even an elected official on the International Council. If you are considering running for District Editor, please email me at editor@floridakeyclub.org. I would love to speak to you about the position and its responsibilities. All District Board positions, as incredible and rewarding as they are, require a commitment and it is vital you are prepared to set aside time to complete your assignments. I highly encourage you to step out of your comfort zone if you are interested in running but afraid it will not result in your favor. No matter how far you make it in any election, the process is very rewarding and you will learn a lot from it!

Leaders of the mighty, mighty Florida District, I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season! I also hope that you have passed all of your exams and ended the first semester on a positive note. As we are entering a brand new year (I can’t believe it!), we have a lot to look forward to.

Spring Zone Rallies: Spring Zone Rallies (SZRs) are one of the most important events of the year.

In addition to educational workshops, you will have the chance to listen to candidates running for office. You will also elect your new Lieutenant Governor. If you are considering running for a higher office next year, be positive to contact the current holder of your position about the demands and duties of their position. It is important you become knowledgeable about the position. Remember, paperwork is due one week before your first campaigning SZR, and you must ask for permission from the Zone Administrators ahead of time. Please reach out to me if you have any questions because I would love to help.

Lastly, ensure that your club holds their officer elections if possible prior to your Spring Zone Rally, and absolutely at least before DCON. Major Emphasis and Preferred Charities: Key Club’s Preferred Charities are Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, UNICEF, and March of Dimes. Greetings Mighty Mighty Florida District!

It is officially the holiday season and a great time for service.! Through Pride Reports, Instagram posts, and emails, I have seen the marvelous projects you all have accomplished.

This month, the Executive Committee will be hosting a few webinars to inform members across the state of Florida and Cayman Islands. Make sure to tune in to the Membership Update Center webinar hosted by District Treasurer Yohanna Torres and I. We will be releasing the date and time for the informational session soon, so be on the lookout!

As a reminder, please be sure to update and/or submit your Officer Information Forms (OIF) as soon as possible. Remember, Pride Reports are due the 10th of every month. Please do not hesitate to email me if you ever have a question or concern. Good luck with all your endeavors!

As the year progresses please keep in mind that you can always accept members and add them into the MUC to ensure Key Clubbers are completing more service hours. Only a couple more months until DCON. Please keep in mind that now is the time to start fundraising. If you are having issues with fundraising please reach out to me!

Dues Update: Although the dues deadline has passed your club can still pay dues. Ensure that dues are paid before February 1st to avoid suspension. Checks must be sent to: Key Club International 3636 Woodview Trace Indianapolis, IN 46268 If you are having issues with the MUC call Member Services at 1 800 KIWANIS ext. 411. Please let them know you are with Key Club.

FLOF APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN!! Please include an article in your MEB about the FLOF grant or encourage your homeclub to apply!!

-FLOF is a grant that can give clubs up to 2/3 the money necessary for ser

vice projects

-Schools must provide 1/3 of the amount they wish to receive.

-The amount of money you can get ranges from $100 to $1,000.

My name is Jennifer Harned and I am happy to announce that I will be serving as your International Trustee this year. I am originally from the Southwest District, but this year I have the pleasure of serving the Florida, Georgia, and Kansas Districts! I was elected to this position at this year’s International Convention in Chicago and recently spent some time meeting with your District Governors in Indianapolis at Lead-Con. At its core, Key Club is a service organization and I hope to keep serving others at the center of my goals throughout my term. As trustee, I will be communicating a lot with your District Governor and Administrators to aid them in achieving their goals. However, I also represent you and your opinoins and ideas on the International Board and I’m here to help you accomplish your goals as well. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have anything that you want expressed on the internatioal level! My other goals include (but are in no way limited to) creating a guide to summer service, aiding all board members with getting distinguished awards, and informing members about leadership opportuinites within the Key Club International structure.

Thank you for giving me the opportuinity to pursue my goals and expand my leadership while serving with you. I look forward to visiting your district and meeting the passionate servant leaders withing them. Cheers to the amazing things to come!

The District Board Offers

Goals for the New Year - service -

Service is one of the compenents that makes Key Club the organization it is. This year, we want to reach our goal of 300,000 total documented service hours with 50,000 service hours documented towards the Governor’s Project Keys to Educate. Make sure to have projects at every meeting and to create a service recommendation box for your club!

- membership -

Our goal is to increase the Florida District’s membership by 5%. This means that all clubs should try to raise their membership by a minimum of 5% for the 2018-2019 service year.

Contact your Lieutenant Governor to ensure you’re meeting your club goal. Additionally, we are aiming to have 15 new or reactivated clubs! Work with other schools in your division, reach out to friends and try to establish more clubs.

- leadership -

As a district, we will aim to promote leadership by encouraging members to take the lead whether it’s running for a position or organizing a project! Establish committees within your clubs and assign committee chairs. Allow members to take responsibility of some club affairs. Key Club is a service leadership organization so it is important we focus on leadership opportunities as well.

New Year In Service

With the temperatures still cooler, continue to take advantage of opportunities that allow you to give warmth. Organize a drive to collect socks and blankets and donate them to your local nursing home, assisted living facility or a homeless shelter.

2)

In the spirit of Valentine’s day, organize a senior prom where you can invite residents of a local assisted living facility to attend the event. Ask local businesses to cater the event and play some oldies music to create a night that will never be forgotten.

3)

With spring coming, your club could start a butterfly garden at your school or somewhere else in the community. Plant flowers that attract various butterflies and watch as your turn a section of land into a sanctuary of life!

District Spotlight Timber Creek Key Club At our past club meeting on Thursday, we had our members donate books and create bookmarks, to be given out to our school preschool and local lending libraries!

This preschool is for the teachers’ kids, and offers them an enriching environment to learn and grow. The lending libraries are all around the Central Florida area, so we decided to stock some local ones near elementary schools with the donated books and bookmarks!

We received over 30 book donations and created many more bookmarks! This project is perfect for Governor Sohayla’s “Keys to Educate” project because the fun and colorful bookmarks encourage the children to become more engaged in reading.

We even left some patterned ones blank to motivate the kids’ creativity. Since some children do not have access to public libraries for a plurality of reasons, these local lending libraries are located near schools and are available to every member of the community, thus fostering a child’s access, and eventual love for reading. We noticed that some of these lending libraries can be understocked, so we decided to take on the challenge of filling them up. I am happy to report that we were successful!

Our preschoolers also thoroughly enjoyed the books because many of them were Christmas themed and perfect for the holidays! We are hoping in the future to be able to read to them, to promote education and literacy among them. Overall, this project was thoroughly enjoyed by our club members, and citizens of the community are eternally grateful! By fostering a love for reading at such a young age, as the children continue to grow and develop, we are hoping that they will take that passion with them!

The District Governor is responsible for the overall operations of the district board. He or she trains other district officers, appoints committees and assigns directives, builds and maintains relationships with other Kiwanis-family leaders and communicates district needs and desires to the international board liaison also known as International Trustee.

The District Editor is responsible for coordinating, editing and distributing The Sunshine Source, and ensuring adherence to Key Club graphic standards and notifying contributors of deadlines and requirements. He or she is a resource to clubs on how to effectively keep club members informed.

Secretary - Elected

Webmaster - Appointed

The District Secretary keeps and reports all district minutes and maintains all records for the district, including Pride Reports and Officer Information Forms. He or she also provides support to the club secretaries.

The District Webmaster is responsible for all online district communications. This includes but is not limited to managing and updating the District website and supervising use of the Officer Information and Pride Report system. The Webmaster is a website resource to clubs in the district.

Executive Assistant - Appointed

The District Treasurer is responsible for creating a district budget, monitoring finances, approving all expenditures, creating and filing all appropriate reports, and coordinating dues collection. He or she also provides support to the club treasurers.

The District Executive Assistant serves as the official aide to the executive committee in creating forms, resources and files for the Florida District and the District Board. He or she may be assigned special projects by the Governor or Executive Committee.

Call to DCON This year’s District Education and Leadership Conference (DCON) will be here before you know it! On behalf of the Florida District of Key Club International, the DCON Committee would like to formally invite each and every Key Clubber across Florida and the Cayman Islands to highlight a year of incredible service and leadership at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, Florida from April 4-7, 2019.

At DCON 2019, clubs will be able to compete for awards, meet other Key Clubbers from across the District, and attend fun, but educational workshops on the matters Key Clubbers really care about.

Registration opens December 1st and closes February 20, 2019, but the DCON team advises you to secure your spot as soon as possible because rooms often sell out before the deadline. A quad room costs $285, a triple room costs $340, a double room costs $380, and a single room (unavailable for students) costs $585 dollars. Registration can be found online at www.FloridaKeyClub.org The DCON team also advises you to begin fundraising as soon as possible! For inspiration on fundraisers, check out the 2019 DCON Fundraising Guide which can be found on the Florida District of Key Club’s webpage for DCON. Remember, that fundraising now will ensure you have the funds necessary to send your club’s members to this fun-and-service-filled weekend.

This year the DCON team has decided on its theme….. Service at the Circus! This will set a tone of inclusion and excitement about all that our district has accomplished this year. Together, we will look at how we can continue growing the Mighty, Mighty Florida District.

Club Club Officer Officer Elections Elections As Spring Zone Rally season approaches, it is important for you to begin considering ways to serve in your home club. Whether it be as a member, committee chiar, or club officer, you will be able to learn information on the position you are considering at your Spring Zone Rally. If you are still undecided, you can use Spring Zone Rally as an opportunity to explore your options by attending workshops that interest you and consulting your zone leaders. Reach out to your Lieutenant Governor for more information on club offices! During all club officer elections, you should follow the Key Club International bylaws unless your club has enacted certain ammendments to suit it’s needs.
