Florida District, I cannot believe summer is almost over. Despite the break from school, I continue to see service projects from Key Clubbers around our district! Whether it pertains to my Governor’s Project or other important work, I commend you on all of the impacts you are making on our communities.

Regarding my Governor’s Project, Keys To Educate, it shines a light on creating opportunities for education empowerment for all people no matter their socio-economic standing. I was inspired by the very high illiteracy rate (20%) we have in Florida. This platform will focus on putting books in the hands of children, working with our special needs students, and reaching out to our community by hosting workshops to inspire.

Additionally, Keys To Educate allows you to get out of your comfort zone by reaching out to juveniles with inspiring letters and supplies to let them know they still have a future. You can also reach out to foster kids to ensure they are well-supplied. Most importantly, use the #KEYSTOEDUCATE to get your work featured!

Using the last bit of summer left, I encourage you to involve yourselves and your clubs with this project by planning service projects and events for the new school year. Our service goal for the 2018-2019 service year is 300,000 total service hours with 50,000 of those pertaining to Keys To Educate. I have full confidence in our district meeting and exceeding these goals! Speaking of goals, we also have a goal of growing our membership by 5%. Reach out to your Lieutenant Governors in regard to how many members your school will need to meet that 5%! I wish you all a memorable summer, and I encourage you to take all the opportunities to enjoy it!

Greetings Florida Key Club Members! These past three months serving as your District Editor have been a truly remarkable experience. Since my installment, I have seen your dedication to Key Club, passion for service, and love for your community through social media and club newsletters. I am astounded by the amount of time we collectively spend serving our district and lending a hand to those in need, I commend you all! In this issue of The Sunshine Source, you will be provided information regarding our 81st annual DCON, promoting club growth, fundraising and more. All information necessary to grow, expand, and maintain club strength for this service year and those to come. Remember to continue sending me photos of your service projects, you just might be featured in the next issue of The Sunshine Source! Officer Information Forms If your club hasn’t already, submit your Officer Information Form as soon as possible. Completing this task allows us to update you on changes within the district and Key Club International. As always, make sure to double check your forms for grammatical errors (i.e. Gmail is not gamil).

Pride Report Reminders Pride Reports for the months of June, July, and August are due September 10th. Please note these months are not compiled into one report and should be filled out separately. If you have any questions feel free to contact me!

Treasurer’s Tidbits

Leaders, I hope summer has treated you well. As we all know, the new school year is on its way, and it’s coming fast. I am looking forward to 95% of club dues paid on time and at least a minimum of 20 clubs applying for the Florida Opportuinty Fund (FLOF) this year. I have full faith that with your help we can attain these goals. I look forward to seeing the impact you will make on your home, school, and community.

Budgets The new school year is just starting, which means that it is time for you to plan out your club budget! Budgets should include: • Income- the money you will be receiving (including dues and fundraisers); and • Expense- the money you spend (including money spent on banquets or car wash supplies).

Plan out your entire year by looking at old service projects that are done every year by your club. Your best guide for this includes old purchase order forms (POs) that should be in a treasurer binder.

Trustee’s Talk

Jared DutkoPresents...

It is sad for me to think that in just over a month, I will be retiring as International Trustee, and in just less than two all districts will have a new trustee!

While I near the end of my term, I am looking back on fond memories of visits to your district and international board meetings, but it nearly impossible to not have any regrets. When I was elected I had ambitious goals-- some of which I lost sight of along this journey. I know I am not the only one to ever near the end of his term and wish they could rewind the clock and do a few things differently, in fact, I know many people who have felt the same way. I encourage you to take the time now to make sure your goals are attainable, and that they’re something you’re passionate about; everything you do throughout your year should be done with passion. That being said, take time to enjoy the little things, because you will carry these memories with you forever!

1. service Service is one of the two key components of our organization. Key Club offers countless opportunities to serve our homes, schools, and community.

These service hours can build your resume for job or college applications, but most importantly offer an opportunity to build character and personality!

2. leadership Leadership is the second key component of our organization. Key Club is the oldest, largest SERVICE LEADERSHIP organization in the world!

From committee chair positions and officer boards on club levels to district and international positions that oversee entire states, Key Club offers a plethora of opportunities to grow as a leader and build leadership traits!

Key Club offers the perfect opportunity to become an active member of your community! Meet people from all backgrounds and serve with other dedicated servant leaders. Many Key Clubbers find their closest friends serving right by their sides! I encourage you to join Key Club, become a servant leader, and make the friends of a lifetime!

Summer Service!

As we continue to celebrate the summer months, it is vital we further serve our homes, schools, and communities. We are only three months into the 2018-2019 service year and still have 9 months left to serve! Continue using resources such as Remind, emails, and messages to stay in contact with club members and update them about upcoming projects. Here are a few service project ideas provided by our District Secretary, Emily Burris:

1) Park Cleanup- gather supplies and make your community a cleaner place! This offers the perfect opportunity for a club picnic social too!

2)Special Abilities Soccer- host a soccer game for children with disabilities with the support of local nonprofit organizations.

3)Every Child a Swimmer- coordinate with one of Key Club’s service partners and host swimming lessons for the kids of your community!

Service Partners Children’s Miracle Network North American non-profit organization raising funds for children’s hospitals, medical research, and community awareness of health issues for youth all across the world.

March of Dimes Helps mothers carry their child to full term and assists in preventing pregnancy problems. Provides the needs for more than 500,000 premature babies born in the United States annually.

The Thirst Project The largest youth water activism charity in the world! This organization was established in 2007 by college students who studied the international water crisis. More than 200,000 people in 11 countries are assisted by this project.

UNICEF Stands for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. More information on page 16.

Have a booth at your high school open house. Make sure to bring promotional material including stickers, brochures, and flyers. Wear your Key Club apparel and talk to both students and parents about what Key Club is and how we make significant impacts around the world.

Have a service project where your clubs create Key Club posters and flyers specific to your school and community. You can also go to the Key Club store and order flyers free of charge! The more people see Key Club advertised, the more likely they are to join. So start designing!

Club growth is based upon two concepts: membership growth and retention. After gaining new members, it is vital you retain them for the entire year and years to come by providing constant opportunities for service.

Key Clubbers join the organization to serve and having consistent service projects ensures they will stay!

Our first club feature this issue of The Sunshine Source is Colonia Key Club. On June 4th, Colonial Key Club packed 15 baskets for teachers working with children in diversion programs.

Our second feature is Manatee Key Club. On June 12th, Key Club members from Manatee Key Club volunteered with Miracle League of Manasota, helping disabled children play baseball. Keep up the great work!

Club Dues Leaders, please review what our District Treasurer, Yohanna Torres, has stated regarding dues. The 2018-2019 dues season will open October 1st, so it is paramount you become familiar with the new changes and how to submit your payments: “It was decided at DCON that our district dues would be going up by $0.50. The extra 50 cents will go towards zone and divisional events. As a result, dues for the Florida District are now $6.00. International dues are still $7.00, meaning that your total, per member, dues cost will now be $13.00. This is something to keep in mind, especially when deciding the membership dues for your club.

Remember that Early Bird Dues are due September 1st and Regular Dues are due December 1st. Send your checks two weeks in advance in order to ensure Kiwanis gets it by the due date.”

Trick or Treat for UNICEF Where is UNICEF?

UNICEF has offices in 140 countries around the globe but is carried out in 192 countries in total. Representatives work in pre-primary schools to improve literacy and education to help alleviate poverty rates. UNICEF also provides immunization, clean water sources, and hygiene products from those who cannot afford or have access to them.

The Eliminate Project

Trick or Treat for UNICEF is an annual event UNICEF runs during the months around Halloween. All profits received from TOT-4-UNICEF go towards the Eliminate Project, which focuses on eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus in mothers and their babies. Our goal is to raise $50,000 for the Eliminate Project this service year.

Start planning and organizing TOT-4-UNICEF fundraising projects, it is never too early! Funds must be sent to the Kiwanis International Office in Indianapolis, IN. Service Update Key Clubbers, we currently have a total of 54,812.39 service hours for the 2018-2019 service year, incredible!
