Message from the Editor Hey there, Florida District! I am so excited to serve the mighty, mighty Florida District as this year’s District Editor. I look forward to interacting with your clubs on social media, communicating with club editors through email updates, producing The Sunshine Source, and providing you with cool new tools you can use to advertise your club to potential new members. You are all more than welcome to send me articles and pictures from your club’s projects, especially projects that involve Feeding Our Future. I promise to make myself available for all of your Key Club needs and encourage you to reach out to me with any questions or suggestions you may have. Don’t forget to tag us when posting project pictures! I look forward to a great year with you all. Yours in Service,

Jada Mohammed District Editor editor@floridakeyclub.org

Governor’s Message Florida District, I truly cannot believe I am here writing you this message as your new District Governor! I loved meeting so many of you at District Conference, and I hope this message reaches all of you whom I did not get the opportunity to meet. In the past month since our Conference, I’ve already seen great excitement for service. I hope that this year brings a plethora of new service opportunities and the chance for us to grow as leaders. Also, I would like to encourage you to reach out to your local Circle K or Kiwanis Club and form K-Kids and Builders Clubs. Working closely with them will only enable us to have a larger impact. One of my favorite things about Key Club is that we truly are an upside down pyramid in that the members are the most important aspect of our organization. We would not be where we are without all of you! I would like to thank you for your excitement about my Governor’s Project, Feeding Our Future. Again, I am so grateful for this opportunity to serve you, and I cannot wait to continue to serve our homes, schools, and communities! Yours in Service Always, Martha Grace Hagan District Governor Florida District of Key Club International

Feeding our Future Through the Growth of... Food– By creating gardens and increasing collection drives, we will grow and obtain ample amounts of produce to donate to the hungry. Literacy– Key Clubbers will work together with K-Kids and teach younger students how to read. We will also inform the younger generation about food supply origins so they will not take it for granted. Service– Together, we will strengthen all levels of the Kiwanis Family by chartering Builder’s Clubs, K-Kids Clubs, and Key Clubs to increase productivity.

Reaching out to the hungry and homeless is the main goal. We can make a large difference by working together. I love how so many of you have already reached out to me with questions or for help in planning projects. If you ever have any questions or would like to send me photos (I’d love to see them!), please email me at governormartha@floridakeyclub.org.

Summer Service Ideas Summer is the perfect time for beach outings, barbeques, lemonade– and service! Here are some fun ways to continue serving your community while school is out.

Beach Cleanup: Beach cleanups are great for incorporating bonding time into a project. Members can clean up the area and then enjoy the beach together.

Food Gardens: Helping a youth center start a food garden is a great way to teach children the importance of appreciating where their food comes from.

Summer Camps/ Youth Centers: Summer Camps and Youth Centers are always packed during summer months and looking for helping hands.

Book Drive: Collecting gently used books and donating them to children in need is a great way to encourage learning while school is out. Food Banks: Helping those in need get access to food is a wonderful summer activity. This project is a Governor’s Project.

Puppy Presents: This project perfectly combines making dogs happy and recycling. You can easily create adorable dog toys by cutting an old t-shirt into strips, braiding the strips together, and tying a knot on each end and the middle.

DCON Rewind The weekend of April 28th to May 1st, 2016 was the perfect combination of service, friendship, and, the fan favorite, DCON bacon. For the 78th year, the Florida District of Key Club International hosted their annual District Convention at The Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel in Orlando. Attendees connected with members from other clubs, met with candidates for District and International office, participated in contests, enjoyed informative workshops, and bonded with their Kiwanis Family. Key Note Speaker, Kevin Wazner, had the crowd (and himself) roaring with laughter with his fun approach to getting an important message across. On the final night of DCON, attendees were invited to the Governor’s Ball where they said goodbye to the old District Board and welcomed in the new one. DCON 2016 was eventful and left attendees excited for next year.
