Building Construction CURTAIN WALL & STRUCTURE GLAZING

Curtainwall curtain walling is a vertical building enclosure which supports no load other than its own weight and the environmental forces which act upon it

Structural Glazing It refers to a method of retaining the glass in a window, storefront or curtainwall. Instead of the edges of the glazing being capture in a pocket of the framing and secured in place with gaskets, the structurally-glazed glass is retained on one or more sides by an adhesive, normally silicone. structural glazing is one of the fastest-growing and most innovative forms of curtainwall construction the commercial facade mark: has seen in many years. In 1983, Park Avenue Tower was New York City’s first experiment with structural silicone glazing. With over 220,000 square feet of reflective glass curtainwall adhered with an adhesive/sealant http://www.frontdesk.co.in/forum/

Classification of Curtainwall Systems a) The conventional or the 'stick' system b) The unitized structurally glazed

curtainwall system c) The semi-unitized curtainwall system

Functional Requirements of Curtainwalls a) b) c)

Withstanding the action of elements Selectively impeding or controlling the flow of light, heat, air, and sound, Acting as a barrier not only to intruders but also to deteriorating influences affecting its own integrity including fire safety.

Elements of Curtainwall Vision Panel These may be fixed or openable; where openable, the sash is usually top hung.

Spandrel panels is a wall panel filling the space between the top of the window in one story and the sill of the window in the story above. Typical elevation http://www.frontdesk.co.in/forum/

Anchorage to the Building In curtain wall critical part is its anchorage to the building Fixed anchor Movable anchor The mullion to mullion joint on each floor is achieved by special aluminum sliding sleeve. There is an expansion gap between two mullions to allow thermal movements.

Rain Screen Principle Pressure-Equalized (P-E) Wall Design The 'rain screen' is the outer skin or surface of a curtainwall, the part exposed to the weather. 'Rain screen principle' understanding for leakage to take place there must be present three essential ingredients: (a) water (b) Opening (c) some kind of force to move water through the opening http://www.frontdesk.co.in/forum/

These systems can be divided into two statical groups: supported

self load of panels is transferred by mechanical support

not-supported self load is transferred only by constructional glue, thus the silicons used must be durable and resistant enough to withstand the weight of the facade, atmospheric loads and subgrade vibrations

Advantages of glass facades:

 high water resistance,  durability,  easiness in maintenance,  resistance to atmospheric condiditons,  strength,  thermal and sound insulation, fire

resistance,  unlimited possibility of shaping.

with steel elements. Inner plates are fixed mechanically. Pins are introduced into the glass. External plate is glued to the structure with constructional silicon.

ď Ž Such a facade is externally

uniform. Seal of the connection of glass and bolts is realised with silicon sealants which additionally increases stiffness of structure.

Structural glass In this technology a silicon glue is the only binder bonding a glass panel to the structure of the building. Double-sided system. Two sides of the glass set are glued to the aluminium frame while the remaining two are fixed mechanically. 1.
